Thanks again for stopping for a chat, really good to meet you, and I’m glad you were impressed with the layout. That was a common comment over the weekend, so I’ll take that as a win! Thanks again, and hope to meet you again soon
Thank you very much. I have a small American , as I am such, N scale layout finished and just let the train run. That satisfies most visitors and my wife. Out in the garden shed is a larger ho scale project in progress. Casual people won't see that until later as it's too much to comprehend now. Again thank you for sharing such beautiful work.😊
Hi George! I’ve loved watching this series, looking forward to the next one! Selfishly been on holiday so missed Corris model railway show :( hope you had a blast!
No worries! It was a great show, met ALOT of people who enjoy the channel which was super fun! Fingers crossed you’ll see the next project at an exhibition next year
On behalf of Small Loco Works, it was our pleasure dealing with you and you could not have done our kit a higher service, the layout has turned out stunning
A stunning finale to genuinely one of the most inspiring model projects I've ever seen. You really have a knack for taking the intimidation out of some modelling techniques and showing just how simple it is to achieve a great result. You also have a knack for doing great harm to peoples' wallets when they decide they might as well have a go...! One of my favorite bits about the layout is those figures; ModelU really does seem like a godsend to the hobby. I'm planning to order a few things from them quite soon. A guard and some lamps to staff a brake van and maybe a couple loco crews can't hurt... Can't wait for the next series!
Thankyou, it means a lot to know people like my work! But yes I a agree, Modelu are absolutely top notch, I’ll use them for everything I do going forward..though the next project won’t have a huge amount on 😅
A fantastic conclusion to a brilliant series, thank you so much. 👍 Just an observation, but every slate tip I've seen in Gwynedd has featured sheep or goats occupying the most precipitous part of any slope! Really looking forward to the next project!
Thanks, glad you’ve enjoyed it - the next one will a new set of challenges, so stay tuned to see me struggle with that 😅 Good idea, maybe I’ll add a sheep up at the top of the tip! Cheers
A brilliant job once again. Its been a lovely series to watch and I am going to steal many ideas for my own plans... If i ever get round to them... I look forward to seeing what comes next. You've shown us what you can accomplish with a simple loop, so i'm intruiged what will happen when you throw points into the mix!
Thanks! Yes well that’s the idea, and I’ve come up to Tywyn ready for the exhibition over the weekend, and the layout fits in the boot..which was another part of the plan 😅 it’s so easy to pick up and move about, but on camera it looks quite a bit bigger than it really is
Thanks Julian. I did test this, but the slate doesn’t pile up the same as it’s at the wrong angle, the text looks more like looking down at a gravel path rather than slate piled up
Didn't know about Modelu till now, very cool stuff, drooling on the PDF catalog now. When I first started modeling in N scale there was two German brands of figures and that was it. This 3D and resin printing method sure is interesting.
They scan actual people and details, and aside from the level of detail, the main thing I like it how that makes the figures in scale, no caricature large heads etc
Well.... I knew nothing about the Corris. I don't model NG, not even 4mm. But I think I have watched all of this build, in fact it has become a weekly must see. Thanks for the inspirational skills on display and the chatty narration! I hope the show goes well - are you spinning the layout on a turntable?
Thanks! It’s one of my favourite prototypes, it was such a beautiful railway. No, but I’ll be turning it around every half an hour, it’s as quick as picking it up, turning around, and plonking it back on the stand 😂
Great job George! I really enjoyed the build series. I'll be over in the UK at the Ffestiniog and Tal-y-llyn in a couple of weeks and I already feel the need for a layout coming on. Not sure if my wife will thank you for that or not ;) A couple of observations. One: Did you think about tilting the layout back a little as you added the slate? Then it wouldn't have slid off so much. I had a similar issues on my 16mm scale sand pit layout. It helped me. Two: More rusty bits of waste against the slate grey, please. It really pops on there. Rusty cables, perhaps a wagon wheel. I just feel like there isn't enough on there right now. Perhaps that's just me though. One last piece of shameless self promotion. Have you seen my e-zine The Micro Model Railway Dispatch? It caters specifically for modellers building layouts in under four square feet. Best of all it's free!
Thankyou, and I hope you have an amazing visit, Wales is a stunning part of the world, and I’m very grateful to live here (mobile signal permitting!) thanks for the comments, I always welcome criticism, so: One: yes I did, and I did try it off camera, but due to the slate falling down, when you put the layout back up, the slate looked like a slate path on its side, so it doesn’t give the correct look. The way forward for future projects will be to not actually use slate, but mimic it with a thinner material. Two: I was conscious not to overdo the scene, but I get your point, and might add a few more bits - I like the idea of a wagon wheel. I did want to add a broken wagon, but didn’t have a spare kit to hand! I’ll add to this scene in the future I think. Three: no, I haven’t, so what is that, and where can I have a look into it? I like the free part!
In a slate quarry i would expect some sort of raw rock face, which could be done by adding a large flat piece of slate. as the scenery is not very large adding little rocks in the sloped area might be done by tilting the scene back until the respective part is horizontal. If this was part of a larger setup this could be built separately so it could still utilise the tilting method
You could be right, but this is just a snippet, there is alot more to a quarry than slate piles, and I’d never fit it all in. The issue with tipping the layout back is the tipped slate is set at the wrong angle, once it’s brushed off it would be more like a path on its side than a ‘pile’, which is why I had to do it like this. If I was to do it again, I wouldn’t use real slate, as it’s just not the right shape for replicating miniature slate.
Most slate quarries seem to start out with open rock faces, where veins of slate reach the surface. But many "quarries" then develop into mine workings, if the orientation of the slate vein is not suitable for large scale open quarrying. This was the case at Bryn Eglwys, which the Talyllyn Railway served. For this option, a compact model would only need to model an adit or shaft as the origin of the rock mined. Waste rock would then be tipped as close as possible to the adit while further waste arisings would come from the mill buildings, where the best of the rock would be made into slabs or slates.
Hey George - have you seen the new falcon Loco - just arrived at the Corris - yet ? Looks superb even without lining out. I still think it should be called a Hughes- not a Falcon , and not just because of the Welsh connection. I think old Hughesey did great job with the design - and got airbrushed out of history and memory like one of Lenin's best friends ( no offence meant to people who can use an air-brush ) The design wasn't supposed to carry a cab I expect and needed trailing wheels when it got one - but still looks great. Nothing special, some are from local craft shops, some are from a holiday in Poland, and some are cheap Chinese ones off eBay! I usually use 000-00 size when painting the figures though
its far better than I could do, but I think the slate hill looks abit steep. due to the nature of a slate hill, the gradient would be more mild. especially with a train line running right below. but as I say, far better than I have achieved with my limited patience. I sold my train stuff on as I never even got around to making one building from plastic. I didn't know how to start I suppose. I admire the perseverance of others and there works.
Quite possibly, but the space on this build was super limited, so it’s as good as it gets this time I’m sorry 😅 I do think it doesn’t look too bad on photos, so I think I’m happy.
