Hopefully, Fourdees will produce a version. I feel Shapeways have fallen way behind in terms of quality. Westcliff could do a good job but production is unreliable at the moment. Thanks for a very informative video 😊
I thought about doing Tom Rolt last year, but the availability of the chassis is the issue. I am working (slowly, due to lack of time), on my own design of chassis, to use in many models. I am currently re-working my RNAD deisel, to be much more prototypical, and it already comes with the Taly name/numberplates.
Glad it worked out in the end and that Shapeways customer support was easy to work with, considering you mentioned the model plastic was soft the first few times and the 3rd only felt stiff after being left to cure in the sun, I can't help but wonder if perhaps shapeways isn't giving the models enough time to properly cure and set before they're shipped off? This might explain the brittle nature of the first two models and their subsequent demise after being painted
100% agree. I’ve since used the paint mix on other models and it worked first time and cured overnight. I won’t be using shapeways again, that’s for sure
Yay, the one I've driven! The loco looks great. I also find it interesting that after lockdown the TR board seemed to say we want all the engines green. The message seemed to get lost after no.2, for a bit of 90's nostalgia no/4 should be in the GWR scheme it had 😉
Livery is always a controversial topic, and I’m undecided where I sit on it. I quite like the Corris engines in red, so not sure how I’ll feel when no4 comes back in grey..
Great video. I feel your pain with the body issues you had. I've had a white metal locomotive I brought once and when it was having the time with the paint remover I found to my horror the body was glued and the remover was dissolving the glue. And the tip for applying lining will be very helpful.
Well you see how I apply my lining, and depending on what kit you have, you can sometimes get lining packs that actually fit a particular model. Of course, others just try and paint it on themselves
Cheers. I don’t know if you remember, but I came over for a chat with you at key model worlds! Loved the windmill. But yes, shapeways quality seemed to continue on a downward spiral for a while, while prices only went up..
I don't know how you get your marking to be so flawless. Every time I try masking off a part, I get paint seepage. I'm using Tamiya tape and everything but the only thing that has works is masking it off them spraying over the tape with the background colour, but that leaves a little paint verge once the tape is removed.
All's well that ends well - nice work on your part 😊✌️👍💜 My 0-16.5 work is very similar, some projects have stalled (not through lack of effort I might add - and that's not even me doing perfectionism) and, now with resin printed kits things have moved on, thank goodness (but they don't help my 75% complete models🤔🙄💔).
@@GWilliamsonModels Exactly that too. My standard gauge line isn't big in the scenic section, because of space and budgetary considerations, so the NG element is to be based on a sand and gravel line - running preservation and passenger services on a weekend (now where have we seen that before 🤔🤔🤔🤭🤭😉). Thus my NG section is almost fleeting to have buried track etc. I really am inspired by the likes of Maggie and Gordon Gravett - Eg Ditchling Green.
I’m thinking about modelling the Talyllyn in OO9 and have been looking around at different options for building the locos. Since Shapeways are no longer in business what do you recommend using for Tom Rolt?
Thanks. Good question, depends what you want from it. The Martin fuller books can’t be beaten for loco info..if you can afford it. ‘Talyllyn pioneers’ has some nice photos for references, as does Boyd’s book, though that’s getting on these days
@@GWilliamsonModels ahhhhh okay that’s exactly what I do hahah il have to wander to the hardware store one of these days and try some of the expensive stuff
Lovely model of Tom rolt! Except you neglected his mechanical lubricator' on the opposing side to the air pump. Not a big loss, but hoping to see it fitted in future.
Me personally, I've always loved Douglas and Tom Rolt for their interesting design, both having similarities. Although Tom Rolt is my more personal favorite, I'm sad to see Douglas go, even if it's temporary. I was really looking forward to seeing the lad in Wales.🙃
Shapeways do seem to have lost the plot. I fancied build Lilla on the Mintrains F&C chassis a while ago and the cost of the print including postage was well over £100. When others are producing similar items for £20 I very much doubt I'll buy from them. Also well done for tracking down Percy - they seem to be pretty rare now.
@@GWilliamsonModels Thanks George, I had a look for some a few weeks ago and they were out of stock everywhere. They're now back in stock so I guess a container has arrived from across the pond. I'll get a wriggle on and buy a couple and hope the bodies come back into stock.
@@GWilliamsonModels yes it is and I don't want to modify the chassis at all but I'm happy to modify the tom rolt body but be very careful with what I remove and I'm not bothered about the rear pony wheel as i didn't even know it had a rear pony wheel until I saw the real tom rolt in 2021 and it was the best narrow gauge train I'd ever been on. I know it's more realistic to add that rear pony wheel but I'm not that bothered about the rear pony wheel and it's too much of a modification for me
Shapeways = absolutely crap! I won't touch them anymore. Ive had a couple of bodies from them in the past and they were shocking. Terrible prints, awful to paint and on top of that the cost and postage is ludicrous
I was SO impressed with how you made the corners on the lining
Thankyou!

If only MS Models made locos and rolling stock . There's quality.

I think I was lucky with my percy chassis as the cylinder block wasnt glued in, congratulations on 4K subs btw!

The only thing I can think is that your paint is either too thin so it’s running a bit, or your coats are too thick. Maybe try adjusting these
@@GWilliamsonModels thanks for the feedback!

@@GWilliamsonModels Yes VERY tempting, the L&B locos were too specific and too rich for my blood🤔🤔
@@musoseven8218 yes the issue with those are how limiting the length of trains are for a realistic look. Even just two coaches makes for a long one

Since shapeways, you’ll struggle to find Tom rolt. I believe Minitrains may be working on one, so sit tight for now
@@GWilliamsonModels thanks for letting me know, I’ll keep my eyes open! Fingers crossed it will be designed for the Percy chassis as well!!
Nice build, thanks for making/sharing the vid. I know it takes a lot of time. Cheers mate!
Thanks I appreciate that
You can use this to make Ivo Hugh from the RWS
You could indeed
She looks very smart!! What livery are you planning on painting Talyllyn?
Blue, it’s all present day liveries
So impressed how you build your engines. Nice to see. If there is one book about the Talyllyn Railway to get, which would you recommend?

What superglue do you use? The stuff I can find leaves a frost effect that won’t go away and you never seem to have that issue
I use proper makes for super glue. I find cheaper makes cause whitening so don’t buy ‘pound shop’ or equivalent

Yes that wasn’t a part I could easily just make, so I do plan to 3D print it at some point as the front is missing it
If you need Wizard models LTD. Has white metal ones, I've used them before and there quite good once the lines are added.
@@Jude-72 interesting, I’ve not heard of them. I’ll check it out!
Where are the coupling hooks for the engine?
I didn’t show putting them on, but I use Greenwich couplings. If you watch other builds you’ll see them
Yes! Best loco at the TR

Alf you say..keep an eye on the video a week this Friday!
@@GWilliamsonModels ohh...? okay! 😁
Where did the pony truck come from?
The wheeler is from dundas models and the truck itself came with the print
quite possibly they didn't cure UV resin for long enough (perhaps due to the models complexity) or they just had a bad batch of resin.
Yes quite possibly, curing this one on the window for a while seemed to be the solution
That is superb. Not tempted to do everybody’s favourite Belgian valve gear? RT models would probably work out….
I wonder how difficult it would be to get it to fit? The model would really benefit from more prototypical valve gear
