    Watched this and your other Airpod Pro videos. Bought a refurbished iPhone and new Airpod pros. I can hear! Tested them at lunch in a restaurant and heard every word. I work with little kids and now I will be able to hear them. My hearing loss began 65 years ago with measles, worse with age. Thank you a million times.

    Thank you! This video was part of what convinced me to try the AirPods Pro2 first before the cost of hearing aids. The Mimi Hearing Test software made a real difference, and after entering the results manually and following your AirPods settings tutorial, there is a marked difference. Just had my 2nd loud noise event that degraded hearing in the good ear. Granted, these AirPods are not OTC or regular hearing aids, but they work for me quite well and I can hear conversations. I really appreciate your video. Thank you very much.👋

    What's nice is that these products are widely available and comparatively affordable. In my country, entry-level hearing aids can easily cost twice your months rent and most people are underinsured. The fact that these are mass produced and deliver good-not-great assistance can be very impactful.

    Thanks much. I picked up a pair of the Airpod pro 2 to try as beginner hearing aids. I get along pretty well without hearing aids, though at times my wife disagrees. 😃 I was struggling to make sense of the wide open OTC market, and by the time you get to something waterproof enough for sweat producing exercise, hiking in the rain, and bluetooth for streaming, the costs are pretty high. And I had no real idea if I would even notice much of a difference.
    I picked up the Airpods on sale for $200. I find they actually help quite a bit, and if the charge gets low they can go back in the case and pick up a decent charge quickly. They do cause comment as people don't understand you are using them as hearing aids. And I don't find them super comfortable after a while, but maybe my ear will break in and get used to them.
    They actually help enough I am now wondering about just biting the bullet and getting real hearing aids...

    Very useful update Dr Cliff and interesting to confirm the relative merits of the APP2's against conventional hearing aids. The other feature I found very useful is that the APP2's when connected to a TV via bluetooth, with the accomodation on, provide an enhanced listening experience over a hearing aid as the drivers are larger and produce a wider soundstage. Used in this manner the person with hearing loss can listen at one volume whilst a partner can listen to the TV at their desired volume. The noise cancellation on the APP2 cancels any interference with the sound from the TV. Brilliant!

    Hi, Thanks for the informational video!
    Question: Does the Airpod pro 2 require a phone (Iphone) in order to perform its hearing aid functionality?
    In other words, after I program and configure the Airpod Pro optimally for hearing aid purpose, can I leave the Iphone at home, and still able to use the Airpod as a hearing aid away from home? Thanks.

  • @Mall745
    @Mall745 Год назад +10

    I was researching OTC hearing aids when I stumbled across your video reviewing AirPods Pro2 as hearing aids. I have mild hearing loss and mainly wanted something to help me hear speech on the TV better. I am not ready to wear hearing aids full time and was really struggling with the thought of having to pay upwards of $1,000 for a pair of OTC hearing aids just for watching the TV. When I began my research I had tried connecting over the ear headphones to my TV via bluetooth. They did make speech clearer but they caused more problems such as not hearing what was going on around me and not hearing people speaking to me in the same room. They also became uncomfortable after an hour or so.
    After watching your video I decided to try the AirPods Pro2 and found them on sale at Costco for $199. After setting them up per your instructions using a hearing test and tweaking the settings slightly for more clarity I am now sold on them. I can hear speech much better on TV while my wife sets the TV to a volume that is comfortable for her. I can hear what's going on around me and people can have a conversation with me while I am using them. I can't believe I've found a solution to my issue for only $199 rather than paying $1,000 for OTC hearing aids. They also have the benefit of my being able to use them for other things such as phone calls, music, and videos on my phone and computer with noise reduction. I have also connected them to my TV via bluetooth so there is no volume from the TV speakers when my wife is trying to watch something on her computer in the same room. Thanks again for taking the time to share this information on RUclips. I know a lot of people can benefit from this little known use of the AirPods Pro2.

    • @Mall745
      @Mall745 4 месяца назад

      @@karlaatherton The AirPods Pro are set as hearing aids as described in this video so they are not connected to the TV, they are just enhancing the sound of the TV. That way my wife is able to change the volume of the TV to her liking as she listens to the TV separately from the TV speaker.

Thus far, my AirPod 2 experience, since receiving them has been marred, regarding having them remain in my ears. I have tried numerous sizes and types of tips and solutions; however, I have no good remedy as yet. Has this keeping the AirPod?2s in someone’s ears, along with hearing aids been addressed elsewhere. I have been using mine for several weeks, they help me quite a bit and I highly recommend them. I have not had issue with battery life as I find there are several times throughout the day I can place them back in case for 10-15 mins and get most of charge back.
    What I am still trying to figure out is what I guess is ambient noise settings, I find they seem to flip in and out of sound isolation at times I don’t want them to. Not sure if this would happen with any other hearing device since this is my first.
    The key point not mentioned is you do have to bring up to people you are using them as aids and not being rude by not taking your headphones out. So if you are vain about hearing aids this may not be your best option.

    My parents (Age 93 and 89) tried out this Apple feature with the Apple earbud.
    For my Mom, It worked moderately well talking to their doctor during a recent exam. However, it really help my Mom using FaceTime to talk with her grand daughter and great grand daughter who live in Las Vegas.
    For my Dad, who is technically legally deaf by the IRS definition for tax filings, this Apple configuration works ok in quiet room settings with minimal background noise since everything gets amplified. For my Dad, regular hearing aid works seem to work better than Apple (after taking it every 3 months back to The VA for cleaning/recalibration).
    After all is said and done, my Mom’s hearing aids from Costco and my Dad’s hearing aids from the Veterans Administration are better than Apple earbuds. But the Apple Earbuds seem to be more comfortable and easier to stick in the ear for immediate use than the bulkier over the ear hearing aids.
    Your video is great! The setup instructional part really makes it easier to get the Apple products configured.

    I was able to set AirPods Pro 2 to use as hearing aids. They worked well for about three hours. After this they would only work one at a time. Each one would work if they were the only one in, but then stop working when both were put in. I followed all the instructions from Apple Support online although they pointed out three times in a short period that they are not sold for hearing aids. They were uninterested in helping me once I told them I wanted to use them as back up hearing aids. Very disappointing.

It took a few months to convince my gp for a referral to confirm what i had already suspected. It took some time to figure out if there was any medical coverage to assist in payment. When I heard about the Airpods Pro,I promptly preordered them. For me, they were a good temporary fix and the sound quality is good. I do not think Apple makes any claims that the ear pods 2 function as hearing aids and Apple, at least for now has not made an OTC hearing aid, unlike Sony or Jabra, for example. However, they may function as a supplemental hearing assistance in certain situations for some people in appropriate situations. I have been told by an audiologist that I am a candidate for a hearing aid yet I have found in the vast number of situations I do not detect a need for hearing supplementation. The only time I have problem is hearing some conversation in a crowded and noisy environment. I do plan on consulting with an audiologist and see if the air pods pro 2 could help me in those limited situations. They are something I could carry with me and just use as needed. Considering the comparatively low cost and other uses for the air pods they may work for me.

    I use bone conduction earphones. First time I tried them to hear music I cried because I could hear music 99% balanced as I have a 10% hearing loss in left ear with tinnitus and just about 5 years ago mild tinnitus began in my right. I have to read lips in noisy environments. I hate things in my ears but I have had to resort to Loops and Calmers to tone down the world and not throw a fit. Even thunder sends my head spinning vertigo. I'm willing to try this though. Restaurants are a horror scene for me. Crowds, groups talking, even the AC impedes clarity of conversation.

    When its working its not to bad, but more often than not the apple earbuds seem to stop transparency mode when i lock or reboot my phone, I have not been able to understand why this is happening. For my severe ranges it understandably does not work that well. None the less its fine when I do not want to bother with my Oticon's R1, and just want to pop these in, if I could just figure out why it stops acting like a hearing aid from time to time. I decided to try these after my hearing examine showed mild -> moderate hearing loss. The number of times I have to ask my wife "what?" has been significantly reduced, and that's the main reason I bought them. I'm finding some value in restaurants and other noisy environments but they're not perfect. Listening to TV is also easier and at a lower TV volume. Still need captioning or a TV streamer to get 100%. I like very much that, after programming, they work with my Android phone for streaming, as well as with my iPad. I don't like that I need an iDevice to program them but I understand. I also like that they've got active noise cancellation. I wonder if the pair of Oticon Reals I have on order will be able to do that? YMMV.

      Can we pair them with Android for hearing aid?

    • @michaelreed1650
      @michaelreed1650 Год назад

      @@faizannaseer1901 You can pair with Android to stream audio like other Bluetooth earbuds. You need an iDevice to set up the Headphone Accommodations which allow them to behave similar to hearing aids.

    • @michaelreed1650

      I've now got a pair of Oticon Real hearing aids. I like them better than the AirPods primarily because they offer more gain, i.e. they better hit my prescriptive targets. (I might be able to tweak AirPods to better hit the targets but I'm happy with how they are now and don't want to mess them up.) Reals are also more comfortable over a day's wearing, but it's close. For me, I haven't needed to recharge Reals during the day unlike the AirPods which need, usually, at least one additional charge during the day.
      I wish Reals had ANC and would stream with my particular Android, but there are many Androids out there that they should work with for streaming. Oticon Companion app will work with my Android to allow basic control.
      Overall, the Reals are better but, for me!, they're really not over 20x better. I'm fortunate the AirPods work for me and I have a choice. And I've chosen to have both. I'd consider the AirPods worth a try if you have an iDevice available to set them up. If nothing else, you wind up with a full featured set of ear buds. YMMV.

    well the Widex Sheer has much of the features the pods give, like using the phone as microphone. And the Bluetooth connect is also second to none with iOS devices. I still struggle though with one ear hearing loss and can’t find a way to use the sheer on the right and the AirPod on the left together. I might have to decide to buy 2 Widex Sheer and not using the amplification on the left 😔

    Airpods as hearing aids will always just look like Airpods, not hearing aids. I wish they were less visible when wearing them. The “handle” that AirPods have makes them that much more noticeable.

    I use the AirPod Pro 2 as hearing assistive devices and they have been great, BUT for a month the transparency mode frequently and randomly turns itself off which makes them useless as hearing assistive devices. The Apple community pages have threads about this ongoing problem which Apple are ignoring. Is there an Android equivalent to the AirPod Pro 2 please??
    Worse still, Apple is teasing that iOS 18 will add the ability to turn AirPods into hearing aids… Quite honestly the phrase “it just works” is untrue - the ongoing issues are making me reevaluate my decision to buy into Apple products to help me with my hearing loss.

    I think Dr. Cliff incorrectly assumes that the Transparency mode takes into account the audiogram accommodation like with the streaming mode, but in fact it does not. I got this confirmation directly from an Apple Tier 2 level support person. That's why Dr. Cliff concludes that the APP2 performs badly as a hearing aid device in the Transparency mode even for a mild loss, because this mode does not know about the audiogram data. But Dr. Cliff totally fails to evaluate the APP2 performance in streaming mode, which is what the audiogram accommodation is solely intended for, and exclusively on iOS, meaning that the audiogram accommodation will not work when paired with a non iOS device like an Android phone or a BT laptop. I was able to get the amplification in the mids and highs (where my hearing loss is) while streaming just fine, just not in the Transparency mode and not when paired with a non iOS device. Even some old iPad models that don't support the Apple Health app don't support the audiogram accommodation either, because the audiogram data come from the Health app.

      Perhaps only true as a default. I see in Headphone Accommodations that there is an on/off setting at the bottom for APPLY WITH: Transparency Mode. For me, I see that my iPhone toggled it off when I connected to another device, but absolutely it's working with that setting on, with the iPhone connected.
      [edit]: I thought audiogram transparency wasn't working without an iPhone connected, but the iPhone is just needed to initiate it, if it turns off. I've had it turn off on me for unknown reasons from time to time.
      That said, I haven't seen that the audiogram is working for streaming from anything except the iPhone; perhaps others can see if that's true for them.
