GM now uses GDS2. The MDI is the actual J-Box hardware at is now used instead of a Tech 2. The Tech 2 can still be put in to passthrough mode and used to program all cars as a J-Box would be. I've been programming GM's with a Chinese MDI2 clone for years, as well as running GDS2 and Tech2Win on it. GM doesn't know it's not real, it loads all the latest MDi2 firmware on it and everything. The support thing is correct. I am an IT guy so I can normally figure them out. I recently did a video on how to configure the clone Mopar Micropod II's
I believe the Acdelcots has blacklisted most gm1 and gm2 clones serial number , so it's advisable not to use that as your passthru device and use it offline only now.
Just to add the devices themselves are not dangerous to use the fiemware in all the clones is usually 100% original, its the cracks and patches to the registration software like IDS ,and HDS ,etc that might be key logging or have a Trojan payload the best way to run this safetly is to run this in a closed environment in a virtual machine , that has no network function enabled so the patches or cracks cannot talk back to the hackers mothership servers in china or russia etc . Ive build many sandboxed virtual machines for my clone tools including tech2 , mdi gds2 offline version 2021 , vcm 2 ids, etc on my primary laptop . Zero issues and completely safe ..!😊
it all depends on the quality of the clone tool. really, you get what you pay for, so cutting corners will always have drawbacks but my experience with clone tools is that if they are of a good quality, then they will work just as well as an OEM tool, but there maybe some slight differences. I have used many different types of clone Ford VCM'2 clones and the good quality work without problem. I have never damaged an ecu or any part of the cars electrical system using a good quality clone tool. There is one main difference and that is when downloading a ccf file the clone tool will show 0v not 12v+, due to a slight variation in components and design over the orginal. You will save yourself a lot of money, but If i had the choice to buy OEM or clone then i would choose OEM everytime. It is only the drastic reduction in cost that makes the tools lucrative to the buyer, as everyone wants to save money in the short term. People who say about the clone tool contacting the manufacturer to disable itself is at best verbal faeces. Bottom line - if you are going to buy a clone, then buy a good quality one. If you buy rubbish then it does fail half way through programming an ecu, then you only have yourself to blame for cutting corners
Can You Tell Me If You Have Used The GM Tech Tool on a 2008 or 09 Hummer H2. And Can You Tell Me Where You Bought The One That You Have Now. I Don't Want To Spend The Money Without Knowing If It Will Work For Me. Thanks in Advance
Great presentation with an added comment. Trusting a clone to update or install a controller is no different than alcohol poisoning. What's the cost of a bricked controller? Can that disaster be explained to the customer?
Never have wi fi / internet activated on the lap top you are using. Some of the clones ( like Mercedes ) will phone home on it's own to the car factory and brick the tool. Last I checked the OE Mercedes tool was $ 20,000 with a yearly subscription update costing $ 6,000. If the yearly sub isn't paid, the tool will stop working.
Dealer quoted $4K to replace & reprogram ABS pump on hybrid Escape I had. Took me some effort to stop laughing, got chinese clone for $100 - worked like a charm.
Nope it's not junk it's just the moresun DC to DC regulator cannot be replicated well , so the clone regulator needs a external supply during cracking the ignition . Run the 12v inlet to a cigarette lighter jump pack and it won't reset on ign crank.

The answer is yes. I’ve saved several thousands diagnosing my own issues and fixing the problem myself.
thanks

That tech2 clone is junk. Reboots on engine cranking which is useless
Does this plug into a lighter / power point socket for power? Some sockets power off during cranking to shed load.
