    Random thoughts:
-Best thing to do to learn to feed the wire is getting a length of filler rod and sit watching the tv and practice. For most people it’s the last thing that comes.
-As a rough rule, 1 sec per 10 amps for post flow.
-You may have a better time if you set your upslope to like 2-3s when welding (not tacking, you want no up or downslope while tacking) so you have a little time to get the pool established comfortably.
-Fitup and cleanliness is 90% of the job, welding is the final 10%.
-If you dunk your tungsten, stop immediately and sharpen it, it’s not worth carrying on with a crap tungsten.
-Keep the filler wire and weld in the post flow gas for the duration of the post flow. If you take the wire out too soon, clip the oxidised end off with pliers before you start again.
-If you’re welding thin stainless without a backing or unable to back-purge like with tube, make up a purge cup (you can use an old gas lens with the hole for the tungsten covered, duct taped to some argon hose (you’ll need a dual flow regulator or Y splitter), or alternatively some stainless tube with scotchbrite stuffed in it to act as a diffuser) and have Jay or whoever hold it behind the weld as you go. That way, at least you won’t have to worry about burning through and getting cauliflowers.
    Most importantly, practice practice practice.

Hi Phil. Keep the filler wire in the gas shield when you stop too. It stops the oxide , the black / grey layer forming on it. If you don't the oxide contaminates the weld, when you restart.
I was taught just the basics by an Ex F1 fabricator, it takes loads of practice to get 1/2 decent, loads more to get really good.

When you're talking about the post flow of gas, a good rule of thumb is to have it on as long as the tungsten is glowing.

I bought a tig welder and started this year. I started on 1.2mm ss 304 tubing and made my first full exhaust. I’d never welded anything, it’s not instagram pretty but it works and I made it.
I find V bands hard to get to seal after welding, so have been using paste on the flanges.

    • @zeroyon4562
      @zeroyon4562 10 месяцев назад

Try more tacks and short stitches, allowing the vband to cool off a bit after each. Also, chill blocks or clamping the band to another band helps with the distortion.
1.6mm tube (like for dairy/process piping) is more forgiving to work with too.

@@zeroyon4562 I had the clamps done up together, and I chose 1.2 thinking I’d save a bit of weight!

feeding the wire takes ages to learn on long welds, I rarely wear a glove on my feed hand unless welding really heavy gauge and then I use really thin leather glove.
just practice a bit each day and keep changing up materials as they all weld differently and also joint type as the puddle forms differently for each, all of a sudden the penny drops and you can do it, you then spend years and years getting really self critical and your never really happy lol

I tried tig welding for the first time last weekend but on stainless and credit where it’s due, it really is as hard as it looks!
Now I want to buy my own setup and keep practicing, the feeding wire part is very tricky

Nice one , although not a regular here , trust me you will never look back . Yeps …..to all those non fabricators out there it is a lot harder than it looks with many variables to contend with.
I suspect you will be delving into cad and laser cutting next plus a folder .
Gone are the days of rummaging around for a bit of old box section for a bracket.
Good luck , make sure you order plenty of tungsten and invest in a bench grinder 😂.
An additional bonus is you can make wifey a rose from steel for Valentine’s Day , should put you in the good books ❤😇😳

Practice and more practice but you will get it figured out. One thing that may help is a lighter glove on your feed hand, truthfully I rarely use a glove on that hand. Just find what works best for you and do it over and over eventually it will feel natural.

Keeping the torch over the weld pool at the end helps keep both the workpiece and tungsten from contaminating with the post flow gas.

You can buy all the gear, read a dozen books, watch a hundred RUclips videos, and spend 50 hours in your shed practising welding, and you still won't be as good as if you'd just had a few hours of some professional instruction at the start. Phil's got the right idea lads, let a pro get you set on the right path from the start so you don't spend multiple weekends just figuring out what the WRONG path is.
