Cutting up my E30 BMW M3 for more lows!

- My E30 BMW M3 Track Car gets a load of suspension and bodywork to make it even lower than it was before. I designed the chassis around this ride height, so it's not just a case of slamming it.

No need to apologise about the waffling or to try to rush through all the explanations - that's what we all tune in for ✌️
Thanks man.
100%!!
Agreed 100%! I love watching content like this!
100% we are all silly little geeks at heart!
Couldn’t agree more. I love to hear Phil talk through his thought process and ideas in depth. It gets me thinking too in regard to my own cars.
Phil really does have a dream car garage, every single one 👌🏻and that M3 😍
This car is an absolute work of engineering art! Kudos to everyone involved in the build - it's brilliant!
So excited to hear this out on track with our carbon plenum letting that S65 sing! Great work as always.
It makes my day when we get a driftworks upload no matter what the content is. Keep it up guys.
I wish I had the attention span, patience and knowledge to do a project as in depth as this. But seeing as I don’t I’m so glad I get to watch you guys nerd out and see a build like this progress
Love a driftworks video especially on the e30 👌🏽
Ps.. v10 m3 where are all pining to hear the 10 into 1 👍🏽
That front wing all that work and still looking oem+ 🙌👏
0:49 jeez the car sounds intense. Great driving Phil 🙌🏽🖖🏼
Would be cool to see you take Misha Charoudin around the ring when you visit in June, if schedules permit. I feel your channels cross over nicely in the 'relatively no nonsense' bracket 👍
I was contemplating letting him drive it if I'm happy with how it's working.
" We might need to change them. For SOME reason". " I'm sure we will". Truer words have rarely been spoken.
" Craig- Can you just....." Fill in the blank. Can't stop 😆😆😆
Some nice flat underside panels might be a nice upgrade in the future
Coming at some point along with a big diffuser.
@@driftworks Keep it coming brother! I am building another E30 for the track and I would not mind to see you doing this to yours so I can copy from it 😉
The technical know how and detail for this car is ridiculous, the ultimate track tool! (Apart from the GT3 lol) please please do some E46 content, these cars are cult now, cannot wait to hear yours with those headers on. Thanks for the continued great content fellas.❤
Phil has crazy mathematical equations in his head like Will from Good Will Hunting, the level of detail is amazing compared to the average car guy.
😂
Love the way the vision of the car and its performance is top priority, but you maintain its looks too. Absolute weapon. 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks 👍
That fitment is 👌🏼 absolutely spot on and still functional. Perfect.
Awesome car and love your detailed run through on all the work. 👍👍
Absolutely superb as usual
This build is by far my favourite “ M3 “ car / creation of all platforms. What you have created along with all those involved is exceptional. Surprised your not going to use air shift like you say with the sequential gearbox but I can understand your reasons why. Hopefully one day I can ask for a passenger lap & be sent down Craners at 8000 rpm.
Loved this! Looking forward to the next vid out of the body shop and thrashing round a track!
Attention to detail of this car is unbelievable
Great work as usual man! 🎉
Excellent work chaps, another very watchable video 👍
Impressive bodywork, nice!
Love the content as per usual. I’ve always wanted a car with that 90’s super touring BTCC look with the massively tucked wheels and this isn’t far off at all ❤️
Love the stance, proper DTM vibes! 🤘
Missed you guys
I love that M3, the colour is just amazing. Now its going to sound even better. 👍👍
Love this build it’s like everything you would want to do to a car to make it your own and we are living it through you amazing 👌🏻 Hopefully see it in the flesh one day keep up the good work phil
Looking forward to the next one!
For solely being a online parts shop, Jay and Phils work is absolutely spot on. Hard to think that in a random industrial estate, these two sons and pappa Craig are absolutely bossin the work
you guys are great together🏁
Love a bit of Driftwaffle 😃
What a bunch of wizards 👍
The attention to detail is inspiring. Thanks for the waffles 😂
love this car all the waffle and tech work
This car honestly is unreal love the time that’s gone into it, that air box is a beauty in the Matt black aswell 🔥 hoping to turbo my e30 soon 😍
This thing is just becoming a whole nother' level of madness.
Good job your back
Any lower and the bloody thing will be a submarine lol, great work as always gents
That has to be my favorite car that you have. Yes, the Murcie is Amazing too, but I think the E30 M3 is my favorite car of all time. The suspension redesigns (many) is just Insane ! There is a very easy way to raise the hood on old BMWs with the backwards opening hood. Just use washers under the bolts that the rear rollers that tuck it down. I had to do that on my E34 to clear the wiper arms that always tend to hit the hood because clearance is so tight. Yes, it's too low but since Racecar ,OK.
The m3 is stunning don't get me wrong, but that retractable tow hook on the Porsche, WOW
Looking amazing guys, have you ever thought about doing a hill climb event in this? I think it would be an absolute weapon for it
One of my fave cars is the Merc 190 evolution with the arches not just the 190e but the evolution specifically
Nice work
Instantly ditched the video I was watching when I noticed an E30 update vid had been uploaded. Let's go!
Still the best car on RUclips in my eyes
This is going to be an absolute weapon. The engineering is amazing. I wonder how much of these mods were present on the dtm e30’s . If any .
I cant believe Craif didnt have an M24 fine LH tap in his building!!!!!
Fantastic build though, looking firward to some more trackday content on it.
First lol.......Great video, love all the engineering that has gone into this, big respect. So cannot wait to hear the new airbox as well.
Exiting nerdy suspension stuff😃
Can't wait to see what you do with it next year..... 🤣
You’ve been busy boys!!!
Amazing work to get those clearances bang on and you've done an amazing job being sympathetic to the lines of the car, just looks more beastly than ever! If they work out in practice would you consider taking moulds of them to have them remade in carbon or fibreglass? Partly because I wonder how all the various layers are going to stand up to cracking in the long term...
Thanks. As I said in the video, these are just a plug for a mould for carbon fibre versions..
Phil u sir are a nutter, love it :-)
Dunno why but the lower air intake in the middle of the front bumper makes me twitch lol, if you look at 31:40 it bows in. However, the build is beyond what some professional level teams are doing, amazing work guys!
It's so nice to see stuff like this being done properly and making sure that handling, clearance and therefore usability isn't compromised. Top work.
One question: what coating did you use for the rear arms in the end?
Cheers. It's bedliner 👍
That is one class car
Thanks
I love the engineering and thought that has gone into this and but it think it looks terrible now, reminds me of a saxo with the torsion beam set too low
When do you plan to next have it out on track? I'm planning on doing one track day each month this year, so I may see you out on track!
Well, that WAS a brand-new tap... 😀
Hey man when will you release the sound vid of 10 to 1 headers
Mint
perfect
Love your attention to detail. Are you going to players or goodwood fos this year?
Cheers. Possibly Players. I'd have to be invited to FOS.
Do you test the wheel clearance at full bump with any steering angle applied?
You're clearly super knowledgeable on suspension setup and would love to watch an episode on you explaining how and why you set things up the way you do.
I factor it in, but the reality is that you have to be going very fast to compress the spring to the dampers bumpstop, so you will only ever have very minimal steering angle.
@@driftworksthat was my first thought too. I guess so long as you don't take it to Spa or the Ring you'll be OK?
I need a fair bit of lock (compared to a UK circuit) under compression through Eau Rouge and the Foxhole. Forget the Karussel 😁
@@pinderwagen It should be okay once the shape is finalised. Also the final piece will be thin carbon fibre, so will have a bit of flex if there is a bit of contact in extreme circumstances. I'm off to the Ring in it in June, so the work I'm doing is with Foxhole in mind .
@@driftworks awesome! Typical. I'm there in April, May, July August and September.
One day we'll end up on track together 😉
Love the build amazing work as always, could I ask where you purchased turnbuckle heim as I've been look for exactly that
Thanks! I mentioned it in the video. It's part of a DTM adjuster from MRT.
@@driftworks have contacted them thank you phil
What’s happening with 10 into 1 exhaust can’t wait to hear it ???!!!!!👌👌💨💨💨💨
We need the e46 v10 soon🙏
Idea: Drift works podcast - Phil, Jay & Craig!
Not that you’ll have anytime to actually do it. But it’d be mega listening to you all have a laugh!
Thumb nail is bit click bait 🧐 but I forgive you 🤣 that thing is looking well tasty 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I'm disappointed that there are no more videos about BMW m3 v10 project , because of that project I subscribed to this channel
There will be, but as I've mentioned multiple times it's a very long term project and will not get in the way of my other projects.
Id pay to go out with phil in that m3 that man can drive
Are there any plans to use or run ccm brakes front and rear?
Could you share some details on how you spaced the damper away from the upright? I guess this to fit wider wheels?
It was yes. It's a complicated wedge shape we machined from aluminium. Long term I will remake the lower HSD coilover bracket to save some weight and complexity.
What engine is in this ? What a car .
Well guys what colour blue is the bmw , looks very well
Glad the heater came on in the workshop @3:54 I couldn’t hear you anyway over Jay’s teeth chattering..
The thumbnail reminds me of Forza... Lol.
Wow❤
Can u please start e46 m3 v10 🙏
do you guys sell these rodends with turnbuckle at the Driftworks? I'm designing some tubular A-arms for a double wishbone setup and these would be perfect!
I did a quick search there but couldn't find them, but maybe I've just used the wrong keywords
hah, nevermind, a few seconds later Phil mentions those rodends are from a DTM STYLE ADJUSTMENT KIT, which just by looking at the part in this video I can tell that it will be too expensive for what I need 🤣
i love this channel but also hate phill. cause of his e46 v10 he made me start my own project with s85 swap. hahaha
Haha, sorry 😂. In fairness I do tell everyone how difficult it is, and basically not to attempt it unless you have 3 years and many tens of thousands of pounds 😄
Phil, did I imagine it or did you say after the crash 1 of the wheels might have been damaged? did you manage to straighten it? or was it ok in the end or simply replaced? nice work btw!
Yeah it was repaired and came out fine.
Omg how much of a great car does one have to change to make more greater than it already is .. drift works 😂seems likes that’s all the fun it will be .. drifts for days lol😂
All makes sense now…. DRIFT WORKS.. simple 😂🎉
👌
Soo the subframe got bent just by welding the exhaust but the control arms don`t? By doing that you did to them?
Everything moves when it's welded. That's why the arms were welded in a jig. The beam wasn't able to be jigged.
Next year: "we've cut out the rear floorpan and we're welding in the rear suspension from an E92 GTS!"
If you’d left the bulge on the wing for tyre clearance it’d have looked escort cossie wrc as same was done on them..
Car still looks amazing 👌🏻
Sweet!
Nice enginering. Where's the Porche?
Thanks. Which one? I'm dailying the 992 GT3 and the other two 911s are waiting for the road salt to bugger off.
@@driftworks Your beautiful silver rocket. and I understand about the road salt. I followed you from when you went to pick her up to when she arrived at the garage. My favorite was when Larry did a shoot on her. WOW! My dream Porsche ... Such a viseral beauty.
Now it needs a full belly -pan.
Hi, what’s your opinion on string wheel alignment?
It's perfectly good if you know what you're doing.
Awesomeness! I love that the rear sway bar is in “full send” mode.
& still not stiff enough by a long way unfortunately. It's another thing I've got to modify further.
Does this run an under tray normally? That would be a smart next addition if not
It has a titanium skid plate. It needs remaking since lowering the engine though. I want to go full flat floor when I get time.
When are the Driftworks vids going to feature drifting again 😉. #MakePhilDriftAgain
I'm sure you've seen these, but the adjusters with serrated plates work well if you ever decide to change the camber part.
It sounds like you're referring to the eccentric bolts I used before and still use for camber adjustment?
@@driftworks yes, some companies make weld-in serrated plates that work really well at stopping them from moving and losing their adjustment
@@1337Hans Gotcha. I use Nordlock washers on a lot of stuff now.
How do 991 and 992 Porsches get so low and there wheels fill the arches perfect when other cars fail?
No such thing as too low🤙
Do you know your car is now a RC car. Just saw it and was like wow.
I do. We worked with HPI on it 👍
@@driftworks I loved when you had a car in juice 2. That was a great game. With your current fleet of cars it be insane to see them in a computer game.
