    That's gonna be SO much fun. Very well thought out. Good call on the DCT box too, it's a proper bit of kit for a non-skid car.

  • @woznaldo

    Firstly, great video! Love E30s and love all things suspension, which lends nicely to my next point. Yes the position of the front lower tie bar does limit the steering range, but moving it further inboard puts a larger bending moment on the control arm. You wouldn’t want it on a tarmac rally car!

    • @driftworks
      @driftworks  4 года назад +1

      Thanks. The arm has been reinforced to offset the change in leverage stress under braking. I am keeping an eye on it though. I'd like to have some completely new custom lower arms CNC'd but it's quite a big price tag.

    • @woznaldo
      @woznaldo 4 года назад +1

      Just finished the all the E30 M3 build series to date and boy does it sound good! Sounds like you’re all over it. Yes CNC custom solution would hurt the pocket! Like you say, if you’re keeping an eye on it and you’ve already knocked over a few track days, it must be doing ok.

    Now you are talking! Mint build, keen to see more updates. Have you considered the increased load on the tension rod after moving the pickup point further inwards.
    Have you seen the people offering Group A rear beam kits? They give you the full camber / toe / roll centre adjustment that the 2nd gen DTM cars had.

    • @driftworks
      @driftworks  6 лет назад +1

      Yeah, they are really nice bit's of kit, but I think they are around £5k and are for centrelocks IIRC. I'll see how we get on with this setup, and if it's not good enough we'll fabricate something ourselves.

    Great video Driftworks. Really excited about this E30. I love the S65 engine for its sound (especially with M performance exhaust & carbon airbox combo) and its 'lack' of torque (for traction) and I always wanted to put it into a lightweight RWD car like a BRZ or the latest MX5 someday. Some questions:
    1. How many miles has the engine covered?
    2. Has the fuel tank been enlarged?
    3. Do you need to look into rod bearings & throttle actuators with this engine?

    • @driftworks
      @driftworks  6 лет назад +1

      The engine has 18,000 miles I think. The fuel tank is 80 litres + a swirl pot, so will be good for a few laps of the Ring. I've replaced the bearings with the correctly sized BEBearings and fitted ARP rod bolts. Throttle actuators have been checked.

  • @OTR-Raceworks
    @OTR-Raceworks 6 лет назад

    The height adjustment on the rear subframe is a great idea. To be honest the whole car sound like it's been well thought out and engineered. Looking forward to seeing further updates.
    Any chance of knowing where the knife blades for the arbs where from? It's something I've always thought about doing.

    • @driftworks
      @driftworks  6 лет назад

      Thanks. When we came up with the design it saved the beam axle, as they just don't work at the ride height I want to run without something this serious. The ARB's were from a company called BMRR we found on FB. It's a kit you have to make yourself which was quite complicated to get right with a front rear bias in stiffness. Again all the calculations will hopefully add up, but it'll be a case of finding out during testing.

  • @SHIREDRIFT
    @SHIREDRIFT 6 лет назад +1

    Subframe locking collars instead of bushes is a nice touch. Wish i thought of that one!
    What brakes is it going to be running? Hope it gets lots of kevlar things too

    Great video guys, as always. Love your content and the way you describe everything, just how I like it (especially Phils explanations). Ive been asking myself how to get the rear e30/e36compact axle geometry where i want it. I dig the subframe adjustable "bushings", very nice and clever work(engineering). Cheers lads and keep up the great work. If you have any tips for the geometry that you are willing to share, please do :) Thank you for you effort and work, its very inspiring for me.

      I want her to be a driftcar, atleast thats what im hoping for. She is a 318Ti and she going through changes atm. But id like to keep her streetlegal, just so i can drive her to the track, drift her there and then hopefully go home with her in one piece hah.

    • @driftworks
      @driftworks  6 лет назад +1

      It all depends how low you want to go. With a 318 you don't want too much rear grip so it's not too much of a problem to have slightly compromised alignment. Just see how you get on first :).

    I had a few questions about the e30 for my own build. So I'll start off by saying I'm more of a grass roots guy diy kinda bit off a little more then I can chew but the build is coming along. My questions have to do with staying 4 lug at this point is it dangerous to drift with power levels at 500ish hp and do you know of any diy rear brake up grades. The front is already running rx7 4 pots
