Volvo 240 TURBO track car project walk-around

- As part of our continued series of Wednesday Waffles, Bryn Musselwhite, an old friend of ours comes round for cars and not coffee. His Volvo 240 with a turbo conversion from a later model is being stored in our workshop and it seemed rude not to look round it!
The car makes around 300bhp at the moment, but this will increase after it's been fixed at Dynotorque.

They attract a certain type of hillbilly that usually doesn't do much with them aside from making them smellier and louder. Much like their owners. It has tainted the entire Volvo image for me.

volvo made the first 3 point seat belt and gave the rights to use it to other brands for safety. :) :)
Second things they are Great to is when lowered, welded diff, and little bit tuning it is incredible to go sideways With ut has insane steering angle

Volvo did invent the seatbelt. Starkey was right! And scuttle panel guys!! C'mon! But good work on the Piccard facepalm. And love the Volvo. Looks cool as fook and some serious modifications

Volvo invented the 3 point seatbelt not the concept of having a seatbelt and the guy who invented the 3 point seatbelt decided not to patent it and just let everyone use it because he wanted to save lives.
Actually vattenfall (swedistan company) got tired of their truck drivers dying on dirt roads so they had someone invent seatbelts. Volvo were the first to make it a standard feature though.

Been following this volvo for yearrrrrrrs now - still love it and the various changes it's gone through, has been an inspiration over the years... I've come close to owning a 240, maybe i need to scratch that itch 🤔
I used to hate these growing up they were so boring but now people are modding them I kinda think there quite cool .... the work gone in to this one is impressive for what the base car is.

A 164 was my first car. A drunk lady hit the car while I was driving... in the rear driver's side door. I didn't feel any impact but heard a sound. If you take off the door panel, there's a giant steel pipe inside the door, like a roll cage. They don't make 'em like that anymore.

Volvo 240 is not an race car, Volvo 240 is the swedish tank!
Volvo 240 literally competed against the Sierra Cosworth, and Mercedes 190E in Group A racing, it's why the 242 Turbo exists. :P
A local shop near me has and old 760 with a mustang 302 in it. Sounds really mean. But I want to get the suspension set up for drift. Is there a store or forum or something that has coilovers and angle kits? Love the build.

ive got a 1978 240 estate, 280k and still going strong. It came out in 1974, but the Volvo 145 came out in 1967 which had a very similar body

10:50 Volvo Australia never sold a Turbo variant. At least one prototype was made, which was a domestically assembled GT with GLT engine swap and some new custom turbo plumbing to clear the power steering and whatnot. They pretty much came to the same conclusion here as you mentioned. I have no idea what happened to that prototype though.

Currently 300, but the clutch, gearbox and diff didn't like that so once they're replaced we can get back on the dyno and wind it up a bit more.
Volvos people are like honda boys in sweden :)

I have a Volvo 240 GL 1985, flipping love it, its my daily driver....They did make a Turbo ?? The 240 GLT That was the same but Turbo, right>?

I have never heard of an older car converted to use fly by wire throttle. Is it because they wanted a specific modern butterfly/intake and that's the easiest way to actuate it?
Just better throttle response and easier to tune with the standalone management. The pedal inside the car is the Audi one too.

How did a snapped cam belt kill the engine? Isn't the B230/B21 non-interference?
when you put a chunky cam in it it becomes interference

Bryn Musselwhite as a kid who had an uncle who worked at Volvo and a dad obsessed with them, I love the things. I was particularly impressed that you knew that the rear window got two inches deeper for 1989 🤓🤔😉

You don't, but it doesn't get that wet in there, you'd be surprised how little comes in.

We didn't get that far, it's around 300 right now but the drivetrain was failing on the dyno it got capped there. Will probably be around 330bhp on high boost when done. Then a bigger turbo and 400+ when I'm ready.

ah sound, I'm going to rebuild an FT this winter for my 240, plans are 3" downpipe, megasquirt, m90, 850 clutch and maybe a longer diff. 200 hp is seeming a little lacking

Do you mean what size?
They are 17" TE37-V which is more dished than normal TE37. The tyre is 235 wide so maybe the wheel is like 9 or 10" wide

Albert Eriksson är inte insatt i Volvo så mycket men tyckte detta såg ut att vara en kombi med 5 dörrar men kan ha haft fel🤭
