- “This car garners attention from everyone,” says Grant Karnes, “and I think it kind of draws everybody in to what Porsche is.”
Owned by a family friend who later sold it to his father, Karnes had known about and lusted after this particular car for years. A Porsche 911 Turbo, otherwise called the “930”, is a car worth lusting after. For a time, it was one of the fastest production cars in the world, and in stock form is still a strong performer. That said, Karnes did see a problem once he got a hold of his dream car.
“It probably hadn’t been driven enough,” he said. “You know, a 930 begs to be driven.”
Driving it in stock form for a while, Karnes eventually decided to lightly, gently modify the car. “Headers, exhaust, wastegate…” and the list goes on. Why?
“I really had two objectives in the project,” Karnes says, “One was to really preserve the originality of the car and its ability to be returned to stock, and the second was that I really wanted to unleash the potential and see what the 930 was.”
For Karnes, the 930 is a car that fits his personal philosophy perfectly. The car isn’t just an iconic shape or startling performance, it’s about how Porsche managed to harmoniously bring those elements together.

The sound of that exhaust when he lets off the throttle is just unreal... How I long for a 930 or a 964... :D awesome video.
If you mean unreal in how ungodly painful it is on the ears, yes.
I don't understand the people who frown upon people like me complaining about the "vacuum" sound the 991 turbos make while they themselves jump for joy like a school girl when hearing the exhaust on this 930.
These classic Porsche cars do something to me.
They just have so much attitude.
TheRealBajan. I have to admit it, I had chills watching this video. The 930 is one of the most iconic designs.
"Old" cars with a Soul 💖
"Work is only 5-10 minutes away" - but strangely it takes at least a half hour to get there. ;-)
+zaco21 I don't think he actually said that, but, like you, I would have a hard time leaving it at that. I might not even show up for work at all some days.
+pmgarrett13 these are good cars to drive from a to a :)
+Cheetah1979 Or he drives so fast that his 30 minute drive only takes him 5-10 minutes.
+pmgarrett13 or takes a wrong turn 'accidentally'
He did say he lived close by, if that was my car i would move at least 2hrs away from work.
I love to see people actually drive these cars instead of having them sit in the garage.
5:01 what a gorgeous shot; screen cap and wallpaper, Heres a still if anyone wants it. imgur.com/jXe7VUi

Lotta good ones in this vid. God bless u PrtScn button.
props to the guys in charge of the video and audio work.
I get really excited whenever the latest Petrolicious video features a Porsche
Wow you really got to appreciate the level of cinematography that Petrolicious puts into their work. I mean if you go back 10 years and look at the way car videos where shot then, and look now it's a world of difference. The style, attention to detail in locales, it just makes me proud to know that although these machines may die away, the future generation can at least view these and get a whiff of what we are all appreciate. Thank you Petrolicious for these videos, and Please if you can, get a Bugatti EB110, that forgotten gem is just too important not to feature on this channel.
I drive these same roads in Northern Kentucky almost every Saturday morning in my 996. I also have a picture of mine from the same vantage point overlooking the Cincinnati Skyline. Needless to say, I loved this film.
Love that Martini bonnet.
Love it...! Awesome as always, if you guys need to feature a 964 turbo then say hello 😜
5:13 - those flames!!
Such a stunning car....I can imagine how awesome it would feel to drive this car daily.......I could only afford a 1:18 scale model of this beauty :) ....And I feel lucky :D....
Gotta love that body style.
Jai Courvoisier the curvatures are PHenomenal
when I was younger, I took for granted that cars popped, gurgled, snapped and banged, then I started to see it go away, then it was completely removed for 'eco' reasons or whatever. Now one of the most popular mods I'm seeing amongst people who care what they drive is to re add the pops and crackles of yesteryear and even one of my friends tuned turbo lag back into his car. I wish manufacturers realised that these old designs and old characteristics would totally still sell instead of this jelly mould same blandness of all modern cars (don't even get me started on the ones without engines)
Is it wrong I liked the video before I saw it ?
Just based on the car I knew theirs no way I wouldn't like it.
+robfrmny21 No, that's the official protocol for Petrolicious videos ;)
+robfrmny21 it's against the law and humanity to dislike any porsche
+Jude Lau Porsche is Holy
These classic ones do something to me to, i did the same thing.
Best looking porsche ever made
I was going to call BS on the part where he talks about the kids playing football who stop to applaud his car... Then I looked down to see my hands clapping too. BEAUTIFUL 930!
Great video! The videographer chose some of my favorite driving roads in Cincinnati! I wish I saw this 930 around more often.
Wow.. beautiful car.
5:00-6:00 The description he gives as to why he enjoys his Porsche. Nailed it! As a Porsche owner this is exactly how I feel about my cars too. All you want to do is drive and take in the sensory overload over and over again. After 15 years of owning Porsches they are as exciting to drive as the first day I got one. Porsche is just good for the soul. Great video!!
Porsche 930 Turbo. The ORIGINAL 911 Turbo. Nicknamed "The Widowmaker"!
a wine red porsche 930 turbo cabrio was my first car in ~1988. i was 4 years old and it' scale was about 1:4 i'd guess? it was all electric drive and made about 3 km/h. i drove my lil sister around the apartment all day. ride quality was a little harsh, but a great car overall, loved it and will never forget!
As a previous owner of one of the biggest ‘widow makers’ on the planet one thing to mention is.....the old 3.0 ltr models had a 4 speed manual box and in 2nd gear you would see an indicated 96mph on the speedo. So from standstill and once 2nd gear was selected the car would just go n go n go seamlessly forward bumping down the tarmac as if you were taking off in a light aircraft. That’s my best memories and of course to drive it in the wet was a constant nightmare! 😎
This is one of best car channels on youtube, the way you guys let the driver narrate and tell their story is nice
Great car and back story. I live in Florence KY and enjoyed watching the car in familiar areas around town. My father owned a 1986 930 Turbo and seeing your car reminds me of why it was the car that first made an emotional connection for me. Very tasteful upgrades which can be a challenge with older Porsches.
My neighbor when I was growing up had a 1978 3.3 liter 930 turbo. In high school I worked at his business during the summers and would get rides from him to and from work in the 930. Great car.
I hope you guys find someone who has a Triumph with a good story to tell. I've got a Triumph TR6 and I would just love to see a video about another Triumph owner, the car has really grown on me.
The lines of that car, the rear fenders just barely hugging the tire as they poke out the side just simple beautiful nessity.
Truely amazing and well executed design in every sence of the word.
Great scenery of Cincinnati! Awesome photography work and another cool car
This isn't my first time watching this video. I'll probably coming back and watching again from time to time.
It's truly a beauty!
5:01 that is hell of a moneyshot!
When I was a ten-year-old kid, this was my favorite car in the world. Seeing this reminds me why I still love it 35 years later. The crackle and pop on the overrun is glorious.
This channel makes soul satisfying videos, the cinematography, the cars are just love
Stunning car. That rear bumper needs to change though.
friggin amazing car, and awesome story behind it
and 3:38
nice to see my hometown in this video...
Car looks beast as well
YES! Totally enjoyed Cincinnati skyline views, Union Terminal (aka 'The Hall of Justice'), street vents that show car driving below on another road, and plenty of roads in N KY and the 'nati. Couldn't recognize any of the back roads, but reminded me of Indian Hill. Beautifully produced = as always!
The guy lives in Mariemont, I've seen him out driving around on occasion. I can't identify the specific roads, but given that he lives on the east side of town, I would agree that somewhere in Indian Hills (or even around Newtown) would make sense.
Another awesome video. I wish you guys would post the names of the music and artists for your videos.
Wonderful car, great video shots. And an owner filled with passion and love for cars. Thanks Petrolicious.
What a beautiful car! I think the best compliment is that I wouldn't change anything about it
I am sure I have already commented on this but I just need to restate, kudos, absolutely stunning. Perfect.
Look at the way those giant rear tire are stuffed perfectly under those fenders.
love this car! bought my 930 in 2005 on the same day i got my license. it was my neighbors car. he knew how much i like it and made me an offer 2 years prior. thanks to this i found ways to earn good money before i even left school. back then i just had the car in my head but in retrospect, i think it's part of the reason i am successfull in life today. not to mention the 10 years of driving pleasure i brought me.
(Leery smirk) Let me get this straight: You bought a 930 at 16 years of age, and you negotiated a deal at 14?
+Jai Courvoisier
can't get a drivers license under 18 here in germany. i must say that i got the car way under market price which was already ~3 times less then today's prices.(~3x for a good one which mine was/is)
What an awesome car, and filmed right here in the Queen City. I will keep my eyes and ears on the lookout for this car...
Thank you for sharing the 930 with us!
there's something poetic about what he says about the Porsche where it marries Art, Science, Engineering. I think that's what makes car so amazing, is that it is the marriage of these disciplines. Cars are the ultimate form of human ingenuity
I love the Martini Porsche livery on that car but imagine a Gulf livery on it?
love that the gorgeous videography and the voiceover /soundtrack doesn't get in the way of the beautiful song of this Porsche 😎 👍👍 !!
Cincinnati Ohio, my city! hard to believe my dream car is so close to me. Hope this guy attends some cars and coffee event around here because I'd love to see this thing in person...
Thanks for this video. I imported one of these in white in 1982 via the EPA waiver and kept it for 5 years. Super fun car.
Time and time again I am amazed by the production quality of Petrolicious. Each hommage is a masterpiece! Truly amazing and it might very well be the best RUclips automotive channel out there, bar none. The rumble that 930 produces when letting go of the throttle is addictive. I could listen to that all day. Also, great license plate!
I love everything about this... from the story... the car... the owner's perspective... and the city. I guess that's why I run around the same roads now in my Brumos Porsche 997 Turbo in GT Silver. Dreams become a reality! Whether air-cooled or water, the essence of the Porsche 911 maintains itself better than any car that ever was.
I've always loved the wide body 930. There's just something about those wide fenders and that massive spoiler. Those wide Fuchs just finish it all the way.
Just shame it has those hideous USA bumper pads though... It should have those nice European bumpers without the pads.
Oh and I know it didn't exist back then, but a 968 CS steering wheel would fit perfectly with the interior of this car :)
Reliable poweful and looks amazing 930 and 964 turbos have so much presence on the road
The fact that this Porsche is from around where I live makes this video even more incredible
How many 1979 cars still look this good in 2017
Cincinnati checking in - going to keep an eye out for your 930!
Great story and great to see a local car featured. Beautiful machine!
Just bought a New K -27 turbocharger and Tial Wastegate. Getting the plumbing ready and cannot wait to install it all. I have a 1988 930. Cannot wait to get it out on the road. Whewhoo. Love this vid.
Great cars. Mine's an '86 and it's been my daily driver for 2 years now without a hint of trouble. One of the best cars I've ever had.
One minor complaint: Grant's voice was mixed a bit low in relation to the rest of the audio. Kind of hard to hear him at some parts.
Besides that, AMAZING video. '79 930 is one of the greatest Porsches ever made, and you guys found one hell of an example to showcase. Great story as well. 10/10.
That's what I call a Dream Car
Love this guys passion and overall personality that comes off in this video. Beautiful car.
I just discover your channel and it is simply fantastic!!!
Thanks for make an edit this videos in this way.
Regards from Spain.
❤😂😢😮😅😊😊😊😊😊 at 9:30 turbo is so sweet your father and you take good care of that Porsche and you said you’re the fourth owner what you’re doing good keep up the good work and I love the sound of the motor when they rub and takeoff a 930 turbo 77 poster in my room on my wall and I got a 935 on the wall a Porsche freak but don’t have a Porsche. I’m gonna get one on my 60th birthday. That’s my treat. Take care. Keep up the good work. Have a good weekend.
Always love Porsche on Petrolicoius...Feature a 993!
HA! Grant comes to Cars and Coffee at Fuel Coffee in the summer, so nice seeing a local guy and car I'm familiar with on here! Keep up the awesome work!
Yes, they are a compelling piece of masterly and soulful engineering. Thank you again - I fully identify with Grant's thoughts and feelings - we must share some DNA :) - and am sitting here lamenting selling my beloved mint low-mileage 964 some years back. It will cost me a lot more these days to own one again! Many thanks and cheers from Sydney - Dave
Beautiful car man, them rear arches are something else.
Hey, Cincinnati! Great shot of the Union Terminal Museum.
That 930 turbo looks stunning! I think it had 261 bhp at the time, but the looks and the sound for this air cooled flat 6 are still gorgeous!! I love the Martini livery, also older Porsches when done in Gulf sky blue and orange racing livery look so good. 930, 964, 993 love the look and style of them all and will only increase in value as an investment.
I had a chance to buy a 930 Turbo 7 years ago.. but sadly it needed a little more work than I was prepared to take on. I bought a TVR 420 SEAC instead.. but I'm still a big fan of the 930
Awesome car! The 930 is one of my favorite Porsche of all times. I still remember when they were around 30k... and this was only 5 years ago
Beautiful video and amazingly good looking car! Does anyone know which exhaust the car has? Sounds great!
Petrolicious! I love it! You guys dig deep to find the most awesome, most passionate cars and people in the motoring world. Keep it up!
one of the most beautiful sounds i've ever heard.
Love the car and love the shots of the local city. Unsurprisingly another fantastic video.
What a perfect car with a great owner.
This is what I remember Porsche to be hence they have lost there way. The iconic red bar across the back and front end bonnet headlights are what a Porsche was. Wish they would rekindle some of these features into there new cars.
Awesome car with an awesome plate. 1979 930.
Thanks for sharing your passion, Great looking 911
good video, beautifully filmed and of course the gorgeous car.
5:18 that's the feeling when u drive old school cars or your dream car. love this video.
I love the backfire 5:16. Nice video.
Gorgeous car. If it were mine - I'd add sharkwerks front headlights with white daytime running lights and rear turn signals - they incorporate a full red lightbar across the top of the plastic piece across the entire back. And you can always put it back to stock.
That backfire...
Such an amazing car but all I can think about is the Factory of Sadness in the background
that's cool, my dad almost bought one in 1980, exactly silver and turbo, man what a car! I was only ten, but I remember.
His job is only 5 - 10mins away from home?! with a car like this, i'd always find the longest way to work as possible. lol
To think that my grandpa had one and he sold it because it was too scary for him in the wet and he used it as a daily, and he got a 928 which I have now
The 930 is called widdowmaker for a reason.
+Enrico Palazzo Because some owners were given a choice of the car or the wife?
pablo p
No, its because the 911 especially the 930´s are not easy to drive, because of the heavy engine behind the rear axle. This combined with a lot of power wants to throw your back out of every corner you drive a little bit too fast. thats why its called widdowmaker. Here in germany there is a saying "you have to be a man to drive a 911"
+Gonzalo Bueno I would feel sorry for you but my car is quite shittier than a Porsche 928.
+Gonzalo Bueno I will never understand the people who sell something because it was too much of what they wanted.
How can anyone put thumbs down on this video? Thanks to Petrolicious, great story & video as they always do.
Brilliant! Lovely car, great story and perfect attitude to tuning a classic.
What a beautiful machine! Great back story and sounds fantastic.
5:15 Dear God! And that noise afterwards!!
There is the sound of a 930, unburdened by AC and street schmaltz, flat out at a track like big Willow where it sounds like it is always coming apart and you know they got it right.
That shot at night in the city... holy cow. That is pure car porn at it's filthiest and I love it. What a great video with top-tier editing and an amazing car.
yep...if I could have any Porsche, even a brand new one of any type or model, I'd still go with this car, hands down. Just so iconic and beautiful.
As usual, very well filmed, and put together, with a little "poesie"
What a great interview! Loved this video, that guy really loves and enjoys his car!
Awesome car. great rebuild. love the back fire and flame
I think all these videos on YT have had a huge effect on price of some cars rocketing these past 5-8 years. People get excited by these videos and nostalgia takes over. I remember when many Porsche turbos were called Widow makers . They were not that good to drive and Porsche introduced AWD to make them more derivable. Yes they are gorgeous and have a lot of character but I also think nostalgia plays a big part in today's crazy prices for everything from muscle cars of the 60:s to Porsches.
+Fast Er Agreed, but collectibles of any sort have always been about nostalgia and rarity. I also "blame" Magnus Walker.
The collector car market follows a general trend. Usually, the most inflated prices are on cars that are approximately 40-50 years old. A major reason is you get a bunch of guys in their 50s and 60s, who now have some money set aside that is burning a hole through their pocket, and they want the cars they lusted after when they were in their teens.
A few years back, 40s and 50s cars were a hot commodity, but they are coming down now. 60s muscle cars are reaching their peak, and you're starting to see a lot of 70s and 80s vehicles climbing. In 10-20 years, you'll probably see 90s imports start to climb in value.
