Interesting touch to do the interview in the parking lot of a cemetery. Really informative. Great, down to earth, knowledgeable driver-owner. Beautiful 930. Subscribed.

Always great hearing it direct from an owners viewpoint. Any 911 demands respect and your full attention when driving. I guess that could be said about any top notch sports car though. 👍
Great video about a enthusiastic owner and his beautiful car. Like you I've never seen another red/red 930. My 86 is a non sunroof (slick top) guards red with full burgundy interior. It has a few other interesting options as well to make me believe that someone must have chosen these things specifically when it was new.I've never seen this combination again anywhere.

Ill never forget this detail about it: and ive never seen another car with it: on the dasboard there was a handbrake light which was larger than the one in this video and it had a german word across the centre of it? it really stood out to me as i thought it was just uber german cool! 👍👍👍👍

At around 8:40 minute, Chuck talks about keeping pace. Let me tell you, YES HE CAN. I have chased Chuck with my 997.1 in the Smokies and he knows how to drive his gorgeous 930.
The 930 is such a striking car. I think it just has to do with the small 911 chassis complete with the narrow and lean cockpit middle section making those fenders even more beautiful. I think the controllability of the cars now has a lot to do with modern tires. My performance cars in the 80's came with tires that had harder compounds than all season tires have now.

... I read somewhere that over 60% of them where wrecked going off the road ... backwards !!! Lift your foot off the gas in the middle of a turn ... a zip ... and you going backwards !!!
Not true, but every 2 years since inception some journalist comes along and writes a widowmaker article and make up a bunch of nonsense about these cars. I’ve owned dozens of these.
Looks great in red, what a nice car with that color matched interior. I had an 82 black on black and loved that car. I wish I had kept it but let it go after 8 years when the prices when through the roof. The only gripe on mine is it really needed a 5 or 6 speed to be a bit more drivable. Solid as a bank vault. Simply closing those doors, it is so tight, you know it's an amazing build quality! Thanks for sharing your story!!
Chuck!!!! Great video. I had no idea you were going to be in one and I don't remember seeing anything on the PDCC website about you being in one. Such a great surprise to see you on here.
Thank you Chris Finch. No, I didn't say anything because I knew Ethan would have a 1-liner that would "put me in my place" and at the same time have me rolling on the ground.
I drove a red/red 930 some years ago but it was completly red inside. But it was repainted, as far as i know. Was one of the last with the 5-Speed. From this experience i still dream of owning one one day
Will I'm kind of surprised you haven't added one of these to your collection yet. I think these are fantastic cars... They are very rare here in Hawaii. There is now only one shop on all of Oahu that can work on them and its where I take my 89 Anniversary 3.2. It was a blue one out in a wild just a couple of days ago and tried to reach him on the highway but he was gone... I couldn't catch him😂. Granted I was in my Bronco at the time. Speaking of Broncos welcome to the club! I just purchased a 2023 Sasquatch 2-door Wildtrak a month ago. Great truck.
One of my dream cars... But prices are now silly... So i bought last year a 997.1 c2s black exterior and black interior, from my best mate, who had spent a lot of money on it, so totally knew its history! Fabulous car... Just an experience every time i drive it 👌. Always great to hear of passionate guys talking of their pride and joy cars 👍.
This car is dangerous if you don’t know how to drive it. Not a good track car unless you know how to drive it. The problem is you need to spool up well before the apex. Don’t lift in a corner. Below boost its not very good.
Outstanding Love that Red on Red. Just picked up a few merch items. Small request can you kindly add a "Rennthusiast" Logo as a Sticker Thanks Will. Cheers!🥂👊🏿🎩
I'd add if you're interested in buying, maybe drive one first. When they returned to the U.S market for 86' they were slugs till 4k revs -- then boost hits and you're gone! I love 'em, but totally opposite experience when compared to today's low-end torque monster turbo Porsches.
That's an interesting point he makes - when these came out a sub-6 second 0-100 was considered super fast. By today's standards, we're quite comfortable with it. For perspective, a 2022 Golf R is quicker in every gear. Still, the simple physics of that pendulum effect when you go off-throttle in the mid-corner remains a defining characteristic that will catch you out if you're not aware of it, and maybe even if you are. You drive a 911 of this era differently to other cars - or you crash. It earned it's reputation. Slow in, fast out.
Hi Will, again a great video that shows me as a German 911 owner and enthusiast how much you US-guys love the brand and keep it up. In Germany sportscars in general get more and more unpopular pushed by "green-thinking" people. Would it be possible to get rid of these nasty rubber bumpers which at that time were only added for the US-market?
Luckily Porsche has come up with their own clean, green bio-fuel that you can use in any 911 new or old. So it's a good sign that they won't be going all-electric
I have an earlier 79' 930 from before the "widowmaker" lawsuit . Yes, it's a dangerous car for people who don't learn easily. That red over red is pretty cool, mine is black over cashmere tan so she's less flashy /noticeable. Still a very fast car that does driving very well for an old car. I used to also have a 911SC with a Paxton supercharger on it... that car was even more dangerous as it had instant turbo level horsepower in the SC body and less traction. That had even more lift off issues 😮
510 you mention Martin Steiger. That HAS to be the guy from my area who owned and operated German Auto Haus in the 80s. My father sold cars for him and was friends with him. I hung out with his son derrick who is my age.
My uncle had a 79 turbo and if your in the boost and turning ever so slightly, the car will switch direction on you really quick, but the 930's are awesome.
The one and only most iconic Porsche the 930. It appears friendly and super sporty in your rear mirror and maybe an invite flashed high beam to move over …
Really enjoyed & needed this video badly as I’m considering purchasing a highly but very professionally built 911 turbo on steroids. Solely to be used as a track & time attack car. Had initially settled on a Cayman GT4 Club Sport, probably the safer & wiser option being a mid engine layout? But with the 911 turbo being 600lbs lighter than the GT4 & over 100 more hp at low boost, it makes more sense from a power to weight issue, especially considering its purpose as a track car. The thought of driving an old school 911 turbo, especially on the track, scared the crap out of me with the lift off oversteer issue. But then I thought, the smart way to tackle my fears would be to spend time in professional performance driving training courses run by Porsche specifically for track/circuit racing in the 911 turbo before taking it on the track on my own. Then once I’ve got the hang of it & the confidence to take it further in the next step in competing. Now, I’m more looking forward in learning & mastering a new skill in the art of driving a 911 Turbo fast on the track.
I’ve just begun looking for my first Porsche and I’m also considering a more vintage, air cooled car. Coincidentally, I’m also in NC over in Banner Elk.
@@octaviusharriss1732 I picked up an 82’ 911 SC in July and I’m loving it. In fact the weather was perfect today, so I drove it to the office and all over Boone and Banner Elk this evening.
This car has haunted my thoughts since my birth in 1985, my mother tells me the doctor that delivered me owned one It's strange because I'm a muscle car guy and not interested in European cars at all yet the 930 always found it's way among the trans ams and camaros in my hot wheels collection
Hey, Will, another good video about a really special car. I sold my 1987, 930 Turbo about a year ago and now I regret doing so. This is a very special interesting Porsche. isn’t it read read everywhere I’ve never seen one like this before either Anyway, just wanted to comment about this particular video the 930 and also that I’m trying to find another one so if you know of one that comes up, please let me know Steve
not much. it's physics. the first major upgrade Porsche introduced was to spec wider wheels & tires on the rear, where the weight over the axle that delivers thrust is greatest. decreasing turbo lag also helped drivers. finally, as turbocharged models hp continued to increase, they went to 4 WD on most of them to distribute traction to all corners, improving grip under lift-throttle yaw. early Porsche turbos were / are not forgiving of inexperienced drivers over their limits. the modification for that condition is to go to school.
Will, love the education. Would you consider more videos behind the wheel on some twisties with the exhaust mic'd? Or a video comparing your cars; I'm curious to understand how much difference the drive is between each. I'm studying the air cooled cars. Thinking next car is a late eighties Carrera with a G50 (as are many other enthusiasts). I have a 2012 guards red GTS and absolutely love driving SE Ohio, WV, and KY roads with it.
Awesome car. Just keep in mind that a lot of Widowmaking happened back in the day because of crappy 1980s tires. With modern tires a lot of those issues get fixed automatically which is why it won't snap oversteer as much anymore.
@@Rennthusiast Porsche began to introduce wider rear wheels & tires to address lift/trailing throttle oversteer in 911s beginning in '72 (pre-turbo, but increasing in hp) after other remedies proved inadequate (added weight to the frt bumper, increased wheelbase). Pirelli CN36s & P7s, Michelin XWX were good perf tires in their day. Porsche makes a big deal over what tires are acceptable on their cars.
I have my dad‘s old 19 7711 to see and then I have my 2006 caiman, speed yellow. I try to go easy on the shifting cause I know Louis gear linkage is hesitancy to go out but I’m gonna take your advice I’m gonna red line them all at proper 4000 ….💃🏻
You can't drive a 930 Turbo on modern tire compounds and say you have an accurate sense of its sketchiness. Your average all season today has 10x more grip.
I’ve owned a bunch of these - have a 79 930 no sunroof Minerva blue over cork 400hp, now just took on a 75 right hand drive turbo Carrera in Frazie over Blue going to fully restore it 😊 and I have to say I’ve died about 20 times watching and reading widowmaker videos 😂
I found the 964 Turbo quite benign and kinda sluggish actually.. Sold it to get my first Porsche back, a 964 C4 which I find much more entertaining to drive.
I think the thing that made these scary is how bad tires of the Era were. Putting modern tires on these things dramatically improves things. Also the 4 speed and gearing. What sucks about the 930 is the price has probably passed the expectations. Back when these where 40 to 50k was the best time. Now at 100k or higher it's hard to no recommend a 996/7 turbo or a nice 991.2 because of how much higher porsche interiors and livability has become.
Sad how much the price went up. No one cared about 930s for a long time. Now theyre 200k. Im 30 and have dreamed of a 930 turbo since i was a kid and ill never afford one now
Nice car. Red on red. Wow. Did I notice a new car in your garage? Looks like a bronco but maybe you have had it already. (You give your wife a space ;) Btw, nice start on the bat auction. My bet was $120k..
Thank you. I haven’t been watching the auction. Not even kidding, haven’t looked once. Just letting it unfold the way it does. I have heard snippets here and there from buddies and it’s going well, I understand. Letting Patrick (The Patina Group) do his thing with it.
All I know is the 928 is faster, safer, more comfortable, etc etc etc I could go on. The 930 def deserves the widowmaker moniker, it’s a crap driving car. If you say otherwise you’ve never driven one
I am the original owner, bought new, ‘89 930. I restored it 2 Yrs ago. I LOVE THIS CAR, BUT, if you think this thing is fast and dangerous, you should be driving a Prius
I like this dude because he clearly enjoys driving his 911 more than he enjoys owning his 911.
Same

I would think stickier tires would mitigate the problem in the curve.
Great video! I always wondered if modern tires and suspension upgrades would tame the lift-corner issues?
not much. it's physics. the first major upgrade Porsche introduced was to spec wider wheels & tires on the rear, where the weight over the axle that delivers thrust is greatest. decreasing turbo lag also helped drivers. finally, as turbocharged models hp continued to increase, they went to 4 WD on most of them to distribute traction to all corners, improving grip under lift-throttle yaw. early Porsche turbos were / are not forgiving of inexperienced drivers over their limits. the modification for that condition is to go to school.
All rear engined porsches will bit if you drive it like a mustang or anyother yank tank. Its suppose to do that .
It is not a Lotus/Caterham 7 and they aren't a Porsche
Will, love the education. Would you consider more videos behind the wheel on some twisties with the exhaust mic'd? Or a video comparing your cars; I'm curious to understand how much difference the drive is between each. I'm studying the air cooled cars. Thinking next car is a late eighties Carrera with a G50 (as are many other enthusiasts). I have a 2012 guards red GTS and absolutely love driving SE Ohio, WV, and KY roads with it.
Would love to do that. I have so many ideas for videos it’s hard to keep up with them but this is a good one. Thanks for watching. 🙏🏽
Awesome car. Just keep in mind that a lot of Widowmaking happened back in the day because of crappy 1980s tires. With modern tires a lot of those issues get fixed automatically which is why it won't snap oversteer as much anymore.
Fantastic point and I have actually heard that before…but forgot it.
Porsche makes a big deal over what tires are acceptable on their cars.
love this dudes accent. 👍🏼
Ha! That's great to hear because it was my biggest worry doing this video, LOL.
The window tint probably also helps prevent the world from turning blue when you get out of that red interior on a sunny day!
When did you buy the Cayman?? No video??
How dare you! Mine has only tried to kill me 3 times in 20+ years...
80+ mph, 50mph, and even 15 mph 😉😁
Mine looks just like that, except the black interior and the steering wheel on the right side (i.e., the correct side 😉)
WHAT YEAR IS IT? THAST WOULD BE A GOOD WAY TO START THE INTERVIEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1987
How can this video have 624 views but only 70 couple likes. Come on people get yo likes sorted
Amen 😂
fantastic car
This car is not widowmaker. The only thing that's undisputable is that it's a classic, it's fast, and that's Johnny Silverhand's car
930 Turbo and 992 GTS
My 2 dream cars
What year is chuck’s 930?
'87
You can't drive a 930 Turbo on modern tire compounds and say you have an accurate sense of its sketchiness. Your average all season today has 10x more grip.
I’ve owned a bunch of these - have a 79 930 no sunroof Minerva blue over cork 400hp, now just took on a 75 right hand drive turbo Carrera in Frazie over Blue going to fully restore it 😊 and I have to say I’ve died about 20 times watching and reading widowmaker videos 😂
These guys are to complicated. Only fear about Porsche is to not trust it. Secret is ALWAYS LOOK WHERE YOU WANT TO GO not where you're at.
I found the 964 Turbo quite benign and kinda sluggish actually.. Sold it to get my first Porsche back, a 964 C4 which I find much more entertaining to drive.
Few easy mods and 400hp wakes the car up and warp speed engaged.
911 is unique especially when the rear-end brakes loose only in a 911 rear engined
Brakes loose or breaks loose?
what is the name of the road you ere speeding on.?
That’s the Porsche I would like to own and drive.
US bumper laws honestly ruin the look of sports cars a lot
I think the thing that made these scary is how bad tires of the Era were. Putting modern tires on these things dramatically improves things. Also the 4 speed and gearing. What sucks about the 930 is the price has probably passed the expectations. Back when these where 40 to 50k was the best time. Now at 100k or higher it's hard to no recommend a 996/7 turbo or a nice 991.2 because of how much higher porsche interiors and livability has become.
I’m interested un seeing a video on the new cayman
Awesome 😎😎😎😎🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾💯
Beautiful
Sad how much the price went up. No one cared about 930s for a long time. Now theyre 200k. Im 30 and have dreamed of a 930 turbo since i was a kid and ill never afford one now
Never say never man.
some cars modifie nito oxide vosters
Nice car. Red on red.
You would really like to hear how i obtained my 78 930
Love to hear it
All I know is the 928 is faster, safer, more comfortable, etc etc etc I could go on.
Sweet mother of God that is a beautiful car... 🥵🤤
Thank you
Super! Thanks!
✌️🤠💥🌟🌀🙏
