Sweet Lord almighty some of those cars are beyond bonkers : Carraciola & 300 gullwing are the top most expensive North 6 million or beyond but this is the Holly grail of junkyards even those 3 Miuras and one-off ISO Griffo i know the right person : John from Curated would be like..
I worked in the metal fabrication building at the junkyard, I was 15 years old and knew Rudy very well, about 30 percent of the porch alloys on V.W in L.A came out of that yard , the yard originally ran from Alameda to Juniper.
Magnus you are so right about the time before the internet, when going to a junkyard was an experience, if you found the parts you were looking for or not, just taking in all the sights was worth the cost of admission . Your choice of filming from dark to light was fantastic !.......Thanks
When I was young and just getting started working on cars, I learned so much about different vehicles and designs, simply from walking around the junkyard and looking at different cars. I enjoyed doing it so much that sometimes getting the parts I needed became secondary.
@@wysoft Me too. A mate and me would regularly cycle or drive miles just to rummage about in local ones in Surrey, one in Chobham woods being a favourite.
It’s not very often I watch a video and am completely stunned by what I’ve seen. I’ve driven by the yard a few times, I knew they had Porsche and Mercedes all over but 3 rare lambos and the ultra rare cars, wow.
These cars are considered by so many (at least by car people) as a pinnacle of human design and automotive achievement. This, coupled with the emotional connections that cars have the ability to instill, makes this such a fascinating watch. It's a stark reminder that all cars are just objects, subject to the elements and decay as much as anything else. An wreck can end the life of any car, no matter the monetary or sentimental value, as well as the lives of its occupants in just an instant.
I worked with a Guy who visited there often in the 70's and once asked Rudi why he didn't sell the 500K because he could get a Million for it .Rudi responded with "I have a million in the bank, and I have this car ". At that time it say outside.
Like the California town of Bodie this place needs to stay intact in a state of arrested decay. Many including my self are amazed at this collection. On the other hand the value of much, other than complete cars, is limited to another parties needs. And if that need was significantly strong these pieces would be gone already. Like Rudi many will bid at the auction hoping to catch a ride on his dream. But whether that dream ascends or spirals downward will depend upon their drive and wallet thickness as they attempt to make something of this assemblage of what individually were someone else's - broken dream. Excellent presentation BTW!
Grew up around the junkyard. Uncle had one for 40 years. People would drive cars and trucks to the yard. Sell them to him. Usually rusted terribly. Engine and trans still good. Interiors often in really nice shape. Mostly with 80-100k miles. Now I live out west. Interiors are almost gone from the sun. Trim also. No rust. And drivetrains have 200-300k miles. If only they could be combined. 😮.
Ian Tyrell may well be getting a few more Lambo’s to recover / restore. As the world leader shop, I hope these go there. The Gullwing.. OMG! What a beauty it can become.
Like opening king Tuts tomb for the first time.. But way cooler in every sense , especially the videography .✊🏼( AND only one guy can rock a wildflower hat with class )
Incredible. ! Someone needs to buy the entire yard, build a dome over it, and turn into a mueseum , charge visitors to come and see all of it, in as is condition. 👏👏👍👍
Interesting, my shop is just north of this location on Alameda. I drove by the yard a good 30 years ago and they had the doors open. Looking in was very surprising, to say the least. Thought I was seeing things all those years ago, until I came across this video! Thanks for supplying my fading memory with solid evidence!
What an honor to have the privilege to show "the Junkyard" tell the stories and discretely drop the Easter eggs coming up for auction. Respect for the family and your connection to them. If I was forced to give you a nickname it would be "the Peacock" I hope that doesn't offend you. I thought that when you did videos for Hagerty. Cheers 🇨🇦
I was so taken by this man's narration skills and cinematography. The thumbnail Drew me in but his knowledge and the surprize's kept me on the edge of my seat . At times I nearly fell off !!!! I'm so astounded . I'm hopefully going to be dreaming about this place tonight when I finally stop my mind from thinking about it !!!! .
Whenever I watch Magnus Walker all I can focus on is how he pronounces his T’s as D’s. “a 3 litre modor’. “Audo Show’ “Rudy got a ledder from Porsche” Once you hear it you can’t stop noticing it. Great vid though. How RM go about trying to catalogue all that is beyond me.
Hey Magnus, really enjoyed your tour. I had only seen this place in the background of parts and car auctions in the past and always wondered exactly where and what it was. I'm in Canada where all the foreign stuff left is mini Coopers and MGs, most of the Porsches have gone to the States or back to Germany so this is kind of refreshing. Cheers!
Read an article in a mid 80s Road and Track magazine about an auto scrap yard in NY. Apparently they scrapped around 750,000 cars per year! On top of that, they would find on average around $1.25 per car when stripping down the vehicles before crushing. Essentially a hidden paycheck of over a half a million dollars in loose change! 😮🎉
Wow, walking down every corner of this yard must be fantastic...as you said like a kid in a candystore. Thank you a lot for sharing and this awesome Video! Regards from Germany 🤙😎
Hands down Best Video by Magnus to date. Wow Rudy was a cool dude and new his stuff and must have had a lot of money even back then the cost to buy and move these cars around still cost real money. Yes cheap prob paid $2000 for those SL gullwings. That alloy body car in around 1980 had to still been 10,000 25,000 the Lambos also had to have been 10,000 to 20,000 each but then again a Ferrari GTO would have been the Holy Grail in my book. Believe it or not GTOs in the early 70s traded for $8000 to $10,000. Now they are 50 Million to 100,million. Any amazing Video Magnus and that hat is Nutzzz
Love the video, love the aesthetic of this junkyard. I’d love to build a barndominium in the center and just enjoy looking at all those treasures everyday
You know this might be one of the few times the values actually help here, as alot of these old beasts might get fixed and put back on the road, so while they may sell for unobtanium, the parts wont, and alot of good cars are gonna end up back on the road from this sale
You know Magnus I probably learned more about you in this video than anything else. I was lucky enough to have a dad that hauled me to junkyard in the 60's and on. We were searching for race engine cores. I grew to love, what it seems you love - the energy. It is just a time capsule of stories. One of the best junkyard s was in my home town. A dinky little New England town. It was tiered. 20's on the lowest then 30's and 40's. Then a tier of big fat 50's cars. Huge hulks. Then came the era of my youth; 60's and 70's cars. I loved sitting in the rusted out remains of big 30's sedans and dream of where they had traveled, and how grand they were when new. They truly have brief life spans in most cases, but they all have great stories to tell if you listen closely.
Well presented you make a junk yard sound artistic and with those cars it sure was Love your knowledge of the cars and especially Porsches, amazing So true they are now obsolete the old junk yard. I am just amazed how much Rudy obtained over the years wow It will be interesting to see if you purchase anything from the auction. Thanks Dave
Rudy saved a bunch from extinction, and if there are any sons, grandsons, family left... they will be quite well off after the action. Amazing collection he amassed
Well made and very interesting video, thanks. Look at how they restore old WW2 warplanes back to flying condition, and some of them were in much worse shape than the cars in this yard (pulled out of bogs after 70 years, etc.). How great Rudi had the foresight to preserve these vehicles; too bad he didn't live to realize how valuable they've become.
I LOVE, LOVE; LOVE the Iso Grifo convertible. The Grifo might be one of my all time favourite cars: An incredible classy GT car of the Sixties. Best of two worlds.
