The most important nugget of information for me was learning that you can map between different channels! I've been using Live for a few years now and I didn't know that was possible. Thanks!
Great video! Couple o things: - You can simply route the audio output to Sends only so you won't have to mute the channel. - You can shorten a loop to 3 beats (or 3/8) to make really interesting grooves.
Playing around w using envelope modulation on other effects like a filter or reverb can create really nice effects as well, you can also get into crazier sounds by using this on certain fx parameters like delay time or pitch shifting
This is a very thorough video, and I appreciate the efforts of anyone who goes this deep in an attempt to teach others the skills that they have developed. I have one additional suggestion; perhaps you can go into more detail about the concept of an envelope. Defining what an envelope follower is by using the word "envelope" is a little bit circular. Many people are completely unfamiliar with this term and what it refers to in a concrete sense. A picture or two of ADSR curves and how the levels correspond to what's happening with the pad might be helpful. Really good video in any event. Thanks for doing it.
i liked that loop u called boring on its own!!!, thought it had a nice clean contrast-- i dunno, lol --with just a hint of that grain delay, cool possibilities $$ dope video!
Haha yeah listening back to it I think you’re right. But it’s something I’d never put into in a song as it is because who knows if 237 other artists have used that loop without changing it in any meaningful way. The envelope follower has definitely helped with making it sound more original.
Thank you so so much again!! Just inhaling all your Tipps and tricks and try to make something in my own :)) Could imagine to create a complete track only using standard Live sounds and instruments once using a Push 2 and making a full arrangement starting “boring” with e.g only a kick and step by step bringing all elements in and also step by step using the envelopes and developments of the sounds?
Great video production quality for bein a relatively new / unknown channel. Keep up the great work! Grüße aus Deutschland, wohl einer der am schwersten zu versteckenden Akzenzte :P
Excellent video! Reminded me I'm severely underutilizing my Elektron Analog Heat as a sound design tool. Looking forward to what you have next, bell on.
Cool tips! I wish it was possible to add the envelope follower to the track you're modulating, and then providing a track which it would follow. Kind of similar to how sidechain compression works for example.
there's also a great use of this if you want to sidechain your bass from your kick, applying this with 0-50% parameters on your kick, to duck down your overlapping bass frequencies it's a good use of env follower
Hey Philip, Even though techno is not my music, this was an inspiring tutorial. I will try it out the next time. I would find it exciting to manipulate not only the gain, but also other parameters. I would have liked to see in the video what else you do with it. Have a great day!
Great tutorial (again 😂) ! Just subscribed to your channel and I feel in my guts it's going to grow like crazy - your vids are extremely smart, informative and well-produced (while avoiding the trap of being overproduced) - anyways I'm an instant fan. Thank you for spending time and effort to share your knowledge with us! Greetings from Poland 🙏❤️😘
The problem with digital envelope following is, that there's always going to be a processing delay, you probably won't be able to get good transients with it - be sure to offset the delay of the channel a few ms...
I didn't run into deep issues with that but I can imagine this also depends on the exact signal (and what you want to do with it). Thanks for the great contribution with your comment, very cool!
... and I use Ableton only for recording my guitar riffs, vocals and doing some little programming. Dunno how I can utilise this in my genere, but let's see. As someone already said, well explained!
Great video, I'm excited to experiment with this to make my percussion loops more lively and unique! This is kind a long shot, but would you be willing to share the name of the sample pack you used for the kick! I've been looking for round kicks with a tail just like the one you used :)
THAS SO SO COOL THANK YOU SO MUCH I FIND IT VERY INTRESTING, NOW THAT IM STARTING WITH ABLETON I FIND MY SELF LITTLE BIT LOST WITH SLL THE FX AND COMPONENTS IT HAS, I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW A QUICK REVIEW OR GUIDE FOR IT
Audeze LCD-X Creators Edition. They beat speakers in mid four figures range easily. You can professionally mix and master from wherever you are (I’ve done major label work while traveling with my family through Italy last summer).
Interesting! Is it possible to have the env. follower reverse the signal? I.e. instead of it raising the gain in the utility it reduces the gain in accordance with the envelope?
Great question! I think you’d have to dig into the M4L device and change something but I’ve never thought of that use case yet. Might try something out and let you know then ;)
Thinking about that again… wouldn’t this be possible simply with a compressor that’s sidechained to that signal? It would read the envelope and reduce gain accordingly.
@pickyourselfofficial yes, absolutely. Maybe the other method might give a subtle difference though, or give access to doing something else as part of the chain? Dunno, kinda thinking out loud!
@pickyourselfofficial especially in conjunction with the other controls in the EF. For example you can't, I don't think, delay a standard side-chained compression. Can you?
I view the gain on the envelope follower simply as “how strong do I want the modulation signal to be” and then map this to whatever parameter I find useful. Gain is the easiest and most obvious one but there’s much more you can do with it. The use case you’re describing would indeed be more suitable for a normal compressor with sidechain enabled.
@@pickyourselfofficial Ah nice! They look really great, similar to the panels you can buy from HOFA. I also built my own panels but to my left and right I have some HOFA curtains which work well.
i got a quick question. When i do gain staging, for some rason i still get my piano distorted, tried putting the DB on Vumt Delux, below -9 DB before every plugin.. Am i supposed to use the gain staging tool to lower the gain, or like a utility like in ableton? why is it distorting still? thanks so much
Okay it's pretty hard to diagnose this from the description. My recommendation is to create a blank session, load up the piano, and add one plugin after another (like you did in your original session) with the same settings until you figure out which one causes the distortion. You then have to go into the settings of the plugin and dial back whatever parameter is causing it to distort. The OTHER possibility is that all of your channels mixed together cause some plugins on your master channel to distort (or the output of the master channel goes above 0dBFs. Third possibility: If you're in FL Studio, there's this strange limiter automatically engaged on the master channel. So a lot of producers don't notice that this limiter is working way too hard (=distorting like crazy).
The piano is my main instrument when recording. Most of the time I get piano distortion even with balancing is down to gain bumps in reverbs and overcrunched comp. Brilliant advice above. It may take time and even feel. laborious but sometimes we have to get our hands dirty and be forensic.
Always felt ising it I had a small delay reaction and was not that practical, just by recording the outcome and then manually put tge recording on sync
It’s just a different tool in the arsenal. I’d say this sounds (to me) a bit smoother and let’s me fine tune it in a straightforward way. That being said, I also love using gates as groove generators as well. It’s even on my list for future videos ;)

just use the gate tool and side chain it to any audio source. way cleaner sounding.
Nice one. I'm gonna go figure out how to do this in Bitwig.
Oh yeah, Bitwig is super powerful!
Super helpful and indeed easy to implement. I find it even more groovy than using the vocoder on a drum loop.

Sorry if you’ve already covered this, but is it possible to invert the envelope follower to come in in silent sections instead of when there is input?
Not sure if I understand correctly but have you tried to turn the gain to negative?
It seems a bit limited and samey on most sounds. I's be good if you could duck the volume with it. Is that possible?
Not sure if I understand the question correctly, sorry. Isn’t ducking the volume exactly what is happening here?
Are there any VSTs that do this?
I haven’t yet found a good solution. Might be possible to do something like this with Reaktor, I imagine. But haven’t checked yet.
cool video bro
Thanks mate!
Are those HOFA panels? And LCD-X's? I am going to sub for those alone, lol.
