He wrote a book called "My Singing Teachers". The first chapter was about Ella. The only male vocalist who even stood a chance at keeping up with The Chair Professor of Scat Singing (to give her one of her other many titles). We love you and we miss you. There have been none to replace you.
OMG ! What an awesome singer , I saw Mr. Torme many times and he always was the epitome of cool and effortless swing. Some of my favorite parts of his concerts were the ballads because he always sang the verse which a lot of singers skip.
Took me too long to appreciate huge talent like this... now as a professional musician I’m so glad. I’ve learned so much from this brilliant brilliant man!
I remember seeing Mel in Beverly Hills in all places a liquor store buying scotch, whiskey, and some rum. I wanted to say,"Mr. Torme!!!" I was a young kid , but I knew who he was.He just politely said,"Hey there kid!!" and I just went on my way. Wow!! what an experience.
To be the greatest singing and scat artist who ever lived you had to have perfect diction , phrasing , timing and quick thinking improvisational qualities , that was Melvin Howard Torme.
As far as men are concerned, the greatest jazz singer in history was a beautiful little Russian boy from Chicago. Ella will always be the Queen of Jazz, but when Mel holds court, Mel holds the world.
Torme is one of the best few scatters ever.....also a virtuoso drummer, skilled arranger, competent pianist & guitarist...there's no need to say anyone is the best...in other words, you can either cut or you can't...Mel's soloing had more musicality than anyone's in my opinion.....eos
Enjoy every moment of this .... seen him live several times and think I have listened to every one of his recordings over the years .... nothing like him now and forever ..... thanks for sharing this!
Torme is the real deal. He loved the music, an walking jazz catalog. My music teacher used to tell our class, if you can't sing it, you can't play it...To really get your mind around something, being able to sing it is owning it. Mel owned it.
What a marvelous tribute to the Great first lady of song !!He really dig wonderfully to do this amazing performace,Ella must to be very Happy right now.Thank You for post this.
Amazing. Voice as an instrument or what. Not one bum note. He was just so on it. You'd have to be do on top of your game to back this guy. The drummer has the right expression - reeeeally concentrating. Thanks posting this vid. It's in my favourites. More please.
the epitome of cool. he was a difficult singer to work with....but perfectionists always are. thank you for posting this. torme is a little neglected on youtube. dare we beg for more?
Mel Tormé, perhaps Ella's most direct and skilled musical progeny. Ethel Waters remarked of Tormé that he was perhaps the only white man she had ever heard that truly sang with "soul". He was certainly the most visible of a very small few white male vocalists who could truly be considered "Jazz" singers.
It's a tribute and he also manages to assert his own greatness. Kudos. What a joy to watch
God damnit! That's the greatest male vocalist in the universe! ❤
You
Got
That Right❤❤❤❤❤
Brace yourself ... never have I heard a vocalist like this in my life ... Mel Torme stands alone -- a total MASTER at work
Same. Loved him since the 70s. I had backstage passes to see Ella, but President- elect Jimmy Carter showed up, and we could not get in. 😢
