Once upon a time, a poor blind kid from London, England, grows up to become a virtuoso pianist. At the age of twenty eight he emigrates to the US, and writes a tune which becomes one of the corner stones of Jazz. Sixty years later, he is knighted “Sir George Shearing” by her majesty Queen Elizabeth II. If that’s not a fairy tale! Yet here’s that guy playing some of the most beautiful piano on the net, along side Mr Torme, whose mastery of singing is stupefying and, to my reckoning, unrivaled anywhere. Yet Mel’s modesty leads him to pay homage to similarly incomparable Caterina Valente (directly) and Tony Bennett (by singing Bennett’s beautiful song “How do we say Auf Wiedersehen”). If that’s not amazing enough, there’s Neil Swainson and Donny Osborne, the former showcasing stunning virtuosity, the latter, subtlety and taste. Add to that incredible cohesion and professionalism, supported by as much humor as sheer humanity, so how do we say “Auf Wiedersehen” to this? We don’t!
Look at that mouth - how he forms the words, where he places each syllable. Listen to those lyric interpretations; deservinging of an Academy Award. Listen to George - those voicings, the changes (chords). Stupefying!
I saw his outstanding performance at Ralph Gleason´s Jazz casual 25 years earlier (thanx to you tube of course, in 64 I was only 9 years old and had no idea of jazz at all!) and watching this glamorous presentation, I am still wondering as neurologist how aging decline keeps its hands off his incredible voice!, Sincerely, have no idea on how this guy could sing such harmonically complicated pieces of fine art with such an endless voice , rich of fast and ever changing tones with such great crystalline pureness !!! Thanks George and Mel for being eternally young for future generations!. Also U tube for saving these enchantments!!
Mel was at his very best and greatest with George. What a great duet they made. Loved them and still do, perhaps even more now. George, oh how I miss him. He introduced me, in my early teens, to jazz with that great original sound of his in the early ''50's. This is classic combination of piano and voice. Unbeatable. Mel had such incredible vocal control! Wow, listen to him sing Pick yourself up. Of course, don't overlook George. WOW!!!!! Again, what a combo of two true masters at their craft. He scatter,
Circa 1989, I adjusted his microphone at a show in Cambridge Ma. - it had loosened and was bouncing off his nose repeatedly. He commented, "Oh, do you travel"???!!!
I was fortunate enough to hear Mel and George along with the great bassist Brian Torff. What an amazing collection of talent in one place. A concert I will never forget.
Have several albums of George with Lionel Hampton, wore those records out! And, Mel Torme he is just fabulous the velvet voice., unmistakeable. They are gone but not forgotten they are truly missed and very much appreciated.
beautifully saidthat first song in this concert in berlinhis voice at his age was flawlesshis voice is an orchestra a pure delight and i,m grateful that i ha ve the good taste to love this man and many others like him i am so lucky
As someone has already said,(and it is worth repeating), Mel Torme and George Shearing were a classic combination. Unlike most singers Mel got better with age, and it is always a puzzle to me that he did not get the acclaim he fully deserved. In my book he was superior to Sinatra!
You know I would not have thought it until I started talking about what a master he was. Believe it or not people, OLDER people, like my age, didn’t even who he was! I heard an interview he was on and he said that he knew his voice was an instrument so he treated it as such. He told the interviewer that he neither drank liquor nor smoked.
Much like Tony Bennett and Bill Evans. George and Mel were a magic combo. I had the fortune of seeing them live a couple of times. That was in the 80s. That's a long time ago now. For a newer take on jazz singers and magic combos take a listen to Sarah Gazarek w Josh Nelson-you will find various live performances by her here on RUclips. Very good. And of course Kurt Elling.
These two, along with the sidemen, were just at the apex of the jazz idiom, as far as I"m concerned. Their music was arranged so incredibly tastefully and was just the height of sophistication and class. God! How I love it. Shearing constant quoting classical music in his intros was utterly wonderful.
Neil and George, what a terrific blending, cannot say enough, George has a great gift and style no one has ever copied-in my book. Loved Lullybye of Bird Land, cannot get enough of that sound, goes deep in my soul. Magnificent to the max.
Quit the phony romantic lying...Mel is great, but neither he - nor anyone else for that matter - is on Ella's level. If Mel were still alive, he'd be the first to tell you so. So you are a liar...one of them IS better than the other! Not really sure if you are conscientiously lying or just plain ignorant of the facts.
George and Mel...musically, perfect together. Superb accompagnement from NS and DO. I remember the joys of seeing GS at the Cafe Caryle and, later, MT in Stamford, CT at The Palace Theater.
I heard that Mel Torme worked with the voice teacher Arthur Joseph who has some videos here. Thanks for posting. What an interesting opening song; breaks all the rules.
Che dire, grandi musicisti ognuno padrone del proprio strumento il cantante eccezionale con la sua estenzione di voce e la padronanza nell'eseguire svisature con la voce come uno strumento. Bravissimi tutti.
It's a great pleasure to watch this concert. Living in Holland i was able to see this concert on German television. I like all the cd's they made together. In 89 and 90 i saw 2 Mel Torme concerts in Amsterdam and 2 in New York (Michaels pub). But my favorite Mel Torme concert is when Mel Torme is the only 'star' on stage ( with the exemption off the great 'lost concert' with Shearing and Gerry Mulligan at CarnegieHall). My favorite Mel Torme pianist is Mike Renzi. It was a great pleasure to see Mike Renzi play piano at the more recent dvd with Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga.
Hey Wunderbar! Great job in collating some incredibly gifted voices. Danke. If we could sing our feelings to each other, inspired by these folks, we would be a humane race. Thanks again.
thank you for this. saw him in chicago jazz club in 1970. had distinctive sound with mature timber that could trill like a flute. always picked great songs. you can watch him on a seinfeld episode too. a nice guy too.
Great singer and jazz player, piano and very good drummer. As a kid saw him on stage in Manchester during a UK tour. Loose connection between Mel and George.. George of course English born and Mel married an English girl.
Mel enunciates.........with a rich voice. The bass is loud on the Bud Powell number, but isn't it great? "Donna Lee"! Neil is superb and clear as ......whatever. ""Since I Fell For You"....Lenny Welch.
Oh, absolutely! Cleo was an amazing singer. I had the pleasure of seeing her and Johnny Dankworth in person in, of all places, Medford, Oregon. They were both in their later years but the talent remained.
I saw Mel and George fifteen or so years ago. I loved them then and even more now. along with Jack Sheldon they are my favorite musicians and married to a wonderful piani, singer and personality that's saying a lot! b
Shearing should be Mel's background supporting accompianist. Instead he's way too loud wth off base keyboard chords. Ruins Mel's superb vocal range & unique lyrical interpretive phrasing skills. Torme's best match would have been Nelson Riddle and Count Basie with Quincy Jones arranging. Shearing no good for singers.

Замечательно! Спасибо! It's impossible to say auf wiedersehen.
He was 65 years old here. Noone in the history of music could do what he could do. A genius.
Look at that mouth - how he forms the words, where he places each syllable. Listen to those lyric interpretations; deservinging of an Academy Award. Listen to George - those voicings, the changes (chords). Stupefying!
'Ole style top professional talent. No more nowadays !
An Academy Award?
The "Velvet Fog" doing his thing. Sounding just
As smooth as ever.
I love Mel Torme. He had a voice like butter. Sweet and smooth. One of the greatest male jazz vocalist of my lifetime..
They didn't call him the Velvet Fog for nothing.
I'm up to 56.34 and what can I say? I'm just dying! ❤️❤️💋
The Way You Look Tonight...85 years young and going hep to this day yet...
Once there was an entertainer named Mel Torme, ....just once.
Mel Torme.....Sarah Vaughan.....Two incomparable singer musicians......and dear ole George Shearing, did well for a saf London boy
He is like a male Sarah.
Unbelievable these two guys
.And the Bass player. ..Wow!..Absolutely Incredible. I could listen all night.

Shearing was the best of the few great pianists.

Bygone era that inspired & apprectiated quality music
Shearing/Torme. The best pairing this earth 🌏 has ever known! So blessed to be alive to hear these 2 genius performers!!!
I was fortunate enough to hear Mel and George along with the great bassist Brian Torff. What an amazing collection of talent in one place. A concert I will never forget.
Wow what a night this would have been… Perfect pair.. BLISS 👌🏼✨
One of the greatest vocalists of all time. The clarity, the control and the ear!
Mel Torme is a styleist without equal. His scat singing is simply awesome . Dick Tynan Dublin Ireland 2o2o
A concert to be treasured - Mel Torme's vocal sophistication and George Shearings magical playing makes for a perfect combination.

Looks Baby ! Handsomeness for openers. Mel just doesn't have the looks. Stupid Americans !
Mel Torme was a master at what he did! But with George Shearing it was a team that was unbeatable!
I loved the arrangement of Stardust. Wow, I sure hope he’s singing in heaven!
yes that song is heavenly
For sure, just as he is resonating here still - in our minds and hearts.
Is there a better word than BEST!

Fantastic concert! Couldn't turn it off.
One of the best jazz concerts I've ever seen....
Incomparable. Thanks for posting just incredible
Te bassist is incredible, listen to the notes !!
Neil and George, what a terrific blending, cannot say enough, George has a great gift and style no one has ever copied-in my book. Loved Lullybye of Bird Land, cannot get enough of that sound, goes deep in my soul. Magnificent to the max.
Mel & George. Greatest ever!
While Ella pioneered scat, Mel came along right behind her. The rest is history! One is not better than the other!

He is one of my favorite vocalists. I wish that he was remembered more for singing than "Night Court".
He is, by those of us who LOVE music.
Oh but he made Night Court so much better whenever he was a guest star. 😊

Oh my goodness, these two! Just delightful every time. Thanks so much for sharing this!
im so lucky to have been able to see these two preform , and about at the time this was recorded too
George and Mel...musically, perfect together. Superb accompagnement from NS and DO. I remember the joys of seeing GS at the Cafe Caryle and, later, MT in Stamford, CT at The Palace Theater.
We used to listen Mel many times.me and my husband
Good old days.
I love this man!
Has to be one of the best things I've seen in a long time.
Two legends in high spirits and fine form. A glorious occasion indeed! Thanks for the upload.
I heard that Mel Torme worked with the voice teacher Arthur Joseph who has some videos here. Thanks for posting. What an interesting opening song; breaks all the rules.
My God , listen to those two on an obscure song and make a masterpiece.

Oh, these two together--heaven!
Woow, amazing..!! Super musicians
Mel Tormé has a youthful speaking voice
Unforgettable performance! I attended this concert in Berlin back in 1989. Mel Tormé at his zenith!
The best concert of all time, now upgraded after a while,
thanks again!
Wow! All fantastic, but some of it is SO good, like Mel’s scatting in Pick Yourself up, it’s almost unbearably good!
Mel is such a talent. Simply amazing.
All of this concert is perfection, but...Starlight! If you haven't heard Mel sing Starlight, you haven't heard Starlight!
Mel breathing: perfect!
We saw these two at the RFH back on the 90’s. Amazing.
My favourite youtube concert.
Hey Wunderbar! Great job in collating some incredibly gifted voices. Danke. If we could sing our feelings to each other, inspired by these folks, we would be a humane race. Thanks again.

Torme, Shearing and such a gifted young Bass player.
Really made my day.
Thank you utube.
Dick Tynan Dublin Ireland August 2
Cadence picarde au premier morceau : excellent ! Et la fugue au second... Mel le génie du scat.
That was great!!!
How do they remember all of that? It's called TALENT.
none better so professional!
❤❤❤❤❤
Great singer and jazz player, piano and very good drummer. As a kid saw him on stage in Manchester during a UK tour. Loose connection between Mel and George.. George of course English born and Mel married an English girl.
Great how can save your great recordings
The bassist is insane
How dare you appreciate style, skill, and emotion? Get with the times!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Celia. Neil and George. Great sound from the bass. Wonder where Neil Swainson is playing now?
Toronto!
Wonderful stuff, was this ever released as a CD?
There is not an adjective, metaphor, hyperbole, euphemism, to describe Mel's voice. Just say it is MEL TORME.
Mel enunciates.........with a rich voice.
The bass is loud on the Bud Powell number, but isn't it great?
"Donna Lee"! Neil is superb and clear as ......whatever.
""Since I Fell For You"....Lenny Welch.
Perfeito!!!
O melhor de todos os intérpretes. Magnífico!!!
Pure talents have no age
Natalie Gotman Amen!
Mel 64, George 78! WOW!
mr. kelly's was the place and chicago was the town.
Don't forget The London House. George was a regular there , along with Peterson, ei al. Good times.
I Need to continue with my thoughts. Who scatted ( I hope I spelled that right) any better than Mel. He was amongst the masters of that craft.
And one can even SPELL his "scatting".......
Ella Fitzgerald was right up there.
@@GaylordBuzzard And you can not forget Cleo Laine,at her prime her voice unbelievable.
Oh, absolutely! Cleo was an amazing singer. I had the pleasure of seeing her and Johnny Dankworth in person in, of all places, Medford, Oregon. They were both in their later years but the talent remained.

Why Shearing says, that DONNA LEE was written by Davis? It is strange.....but Davis wrote in his book, he composed this piece.....so strange..
Mel is a piano.
I saw Mel and George fifteen or so years ago. I loved them then and even more now. along with Jack Sheldon they are my favorite musicians and married to a wonderful piani, singer and personality that's saying a lot! b
You bet!!
@@barbarabaldwin7274 you definitely saw them more than 15 or so years ago considering mel has been dead since "96
the younger bass player seems under a lot of stress... great though
Jazz Singer of all times !! Frank Sinatra is my Favorite but Mel is far away better than Frank.
Подлинные мастера!!!
Torture.
Disagree completely!
