I fell in love with this man when I was a very young girl. My dad would play his records non stop. As an adult, I was privileged to see his very last concert. On the bill that night, my man Mel, George Shearing trio and Peggy Lee! Two weeks later, Mel suffered a stroke from which he never recovered. I cried for days at his passing. I still play his records. I miss him😢😢

Having parents that are like that, where waking up on the weekends was to the sounds of chopin to queen to edith to roger miles to aerosmith to beatles, to enya to vangelis, etcetcetc, well you know,...timeless brilliant artists. That door created for us by mom and dad is priceless, a real mind opener

I received my 1st Stereo Phonograph Player in 1968 as a Christmas Present...Every so often my Dad would commandeer the record player...and I learned about the "Great American Songbook", and my life changed for the better...So, 20 or so years later as a Fathers Day Present we took Dad to see "The One, and Only Mel Torme" at Carnegie Hall...and Dad smiled from ear to ear for the next 2 and 1/2 hours....What a performance. Mel sang, danced, played drums, trumpet, etc,etc,...What a performer!... On June 5th of this year it has made 25 years since we lost Mel...Like your self I still can't believe it...A few weeks back I turned on the radio, and Ella Fitzgerald was on...and I contacted my sister to let her know that WKCR in NYC was doing some sort of Tribute to Ella...but in the text I sent my sister what I also told my her was "That any day you can listen to Ella is a very good day!"...and nobody championed Ella like Mel...It was a privilege that I got to see him...and "Yes" I'm also still listening to him!...It never gets old.

@@wandertree Not only was he such a gifted singer . He was talented writer. I remember reading one of his novels ( It was over 40 years ago, but for the life of me I can't remember the name of the book. I'll look it up later.) In his autobiography his recollection of why he wrote "The Christmas Song" is classic...He was somewhere in California, where it was extremely hot, so he decided he needed to write about something that was cool, and cold...It doesn't get any better than that!

I saw him after my freshman year in college, in 1978. Didn’t know who he was. I was stunned when he shifted into high gear, didn’t know anyone could do that. A lifetime later it’s clear that only a precious few can, and I come back to them often.

That Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon performance was pretty harrowing for me. I was playing on Bob Badgley’s bass in this video. It’s strung right handed. He was playing in the house band and graciously let me borrow his bass. We were flying that day after playing a show in St Louis the night before, on our way to L.A. to play a show that night. We connected in Vegas and did a quick layover to play the telethon. No time to collect our bags or my instrument, they flew straight to L.A. with the road manager. I played upside down live on national tv! Made some interesting faces as I rearranged my brain waves!
