Ella took this ditty and played with it in a way that is pure fun, pure Ella, and what's more pure jazz. The artistry in the music is in the interplay between the one note and the chord that changes under it EVERY bar. In order to do a scat like this you have to be intimately connected with the harmony.

At a certain moment in time Dizzy Gillespie asked her to try and sing his trumpet licks, wich she nailed. Scat was born. I'm a non believer, but if there's a heaven, I'm sure Ella's the lead singer of the angel choir.
Even in her later years Ella was wonderful. Of all the female singers of all time, there is simply no one in her class. She could do it all. After leading Chick Webb's band in he big band era, she seamlessly eased into bebop with her great scat singing. She never went out of style and never will.

My grandfather introduced me to her music when I was about 7,8 or 9. He played "Smooth Sailing" and I wanted to scat every since. Lol
