This one was a lot of fun! I didn't know much about Aeldari before going into this, as most of my knowledge is from some games, and I'm not a huge fan of their overall aesthetic. But as the video was being made and I was drawing the pictures I grew to appreciate how unique they are.

It's a common misconception that the Drukhari are "left alone" by Slaanesh because of their depravity. Instead, the Drukhari are having their souls _slowly_ drained away by She Who Thirsts, but they can 'top up' and replenish their souls (and reinvigorate their bodies) by inflicting pain and terror on others and "feeding" upon those emotions... but that 'top up' is only temporary, and the older they get, the more and more they need to feed. The most ancient Drukhari, many thousands of years old, carry out grand atrocities simply to replenish their diminished spirit.

But a thousand psykers a day is trivial compared to the Drukhari and their culture of torment, and it's actually only a fraction of the psykers brought to Terra each year: many are just executed as too unstable to live, a good portion are soul-bound to the Emperor to become Astropaths to communicate between worlds, some get sent to join the Choir of the Astronomican, and a small portion become the sanctioned psykers used by the Imperial Guard, Inquisition, etc.

A fun fact about the Eldar: we are shown on multiple occasions that people can jump between being dark eldar, corsairs (pirates that walk both sides), harlequins, and craftworlders. With this knowledge, you can come to an often overlooked conclusion: dark eldar (not born into absolute servitude) actively *choose* to be the absolute worst.

    • @kaltaron1284
      @kaltaron1284 10 месяцев назад +15

I don't think all those transitions work. Craftworlders can become Corsairs or Harlequins and in the case of Corsairs go back to being Craftworlders. Dark Eldar can become Harlequins but I don't think they would ever become Craftworlders or Dark Eldar again. Dark Eldar joining the Corsairs would be exceptionally rare as those still need a Spirit Stone to protect themselves. "Dark Eldar Corsairs" are most likely just a case of the Imperium mixing things up and not understanding the difference.

    • @TheDemiurgeJ
      @TheDemiurgeJ 10 месяцев назад +7

@@kaltaron1284 We know there are Dark Eldar that are also corsairs, Duke Traevelliath Sliscus being the prime example who is continuously called a drukhari and anhrathe. He's the leader of the Corsair coterie Sky Serpents, had an ex-craftworlder in his retinue alongside haemonculi and the typical alien mercenaries the dark eldar keep. Also, he's noted as being an inspiration for dark eldar and those exiled from Commorragh.
Then of course we have Yvraine, who was a Craftworlder who walked the path of the seer, warrior and dancer before becoming a corsair leader and then a dark eldar gladiatrix. We have examples at least two examples of this happening, multiple references to Outcasts walking every path, and corsairs dabbling in both extremes of the eldar condition.

This is why Dark Eldar have been my favourite faction since they were introduced. If any Aeldari can stave off being consumed by Slaanesh through horrific acts of sadism and murder, then, as you say, that means the Drukhari have chosen this path consciously. I think this makes them the purest expression of evil in 40k, and probably the only race having more fun than the Dark Eldar are the Orks. I love villains that are genuinely, unapologetically villainous, and I think that's the Dark Eldar.

As they now the bugs you want as far away from you as possible can have a stratagem that lets them run with all units during their shooting phase. And combine it with another stratagem where the troop that gets shot, gets a free run move against the people shooting at them.

Then there's Ynnead the god of death who the Eldar really want to bring into existence to beat up Slaneesh a bit. An effort that Girlyman's big titty elf gf Yvraine is spearheading. This is the closest the Eldar have gotten to salvation in a long time.

no eldar had spiritstones when the birth of slaanesh happened
the only thing that saved the craftworlders for a time was distance
the rangers, the eldar that failed finding a path, whose soul is unable to find peace, go into the eye of terror and collect the remains of the permatortured eldar
the refined fossils is what the spiritstones are made out of
the soul of an eldar abused and sacrificed to protect the soul of an eldar
think "path of the ranger" was the novel that talks about where the stones come from
your semi right about it being a limited resource, its basically in the warp, so nothing stopping you from taking the same stone out twice, if you pick it up today, just pick it up from yesterday next time
eldar also no longer get reborn, unless its dark eldar
the pre fall eldar prettymuch grabbed the soul out of the warp and stuffed it into a new vatgrown body
dark eldar still do it, just with a lot of extra torture, repaying the warp in souls before they get theirs out of it
the craftworlders can not be reborn, only moved into the ship or a wraithguard as storage and powersource
they dont grow new bodies, they cant get the soul out of the stone
its eternal prison, but thats ok because the prison is the also keeping the danger out

Probably the funniest bit of Eldar lore I like is one of the reasons the Necrons went into hibernation was because with the Old Ones gone they expected the Eldar to basically self-destruct and decided to just wait it out.
Then come modern 40k and the Necrons were proven basically 100% right. The only thing they couldn't foresee was the Eldar blowing themselves up so bad they basically started dragging all of reality with them via the Eye of Terror turned Great Rift.

My favorite excerpt from Bricky was when he was talking about how BS Eldar are on tabletop. Apparently…they used to have an uncapped debuff when using flying vehicles that made the people shooting at them have to roll higher to hit. Since that debuff was uncapped, it meant that some guard regiments were ENTIRELY UNABLE to kill flying eldar vehicles because their dice only rolled up to a 6, and they needed to roll a 7. Oops. Thankfully in subsequent editions it was capped.

Not sure if anyone mentioned it, but the Move-Shoot-Move of Eldar was their 9th edition rules. In 10th the broken thing was that they:
    1. Had the ability to move a unit *after* your opponent has finished moving all of their units (oh, you lined up a shot on one of my important units? my unit leaves)
    2. Their Fate Dice mechanic just meant if you had a bunch of 6s, you won, due to how Devastating Wounds were ruled at first. They got the entire mechanic nerfed because, with a little bit of luck, one gun could take out like 5 Space Marine Terminators no problem from half the map away.
    3. Their unit that had that really good gun was REALLY cheap for what it gave you, being two of those guns, a BUNCH of HP, and it was heavy-tank toughness for like... 3 of them (the max you can bring) wasn't even half your army.

One thing you didn't mention that relates to the spirit stones slotting into their technology is the wraithbone they use to construct basically everything they use, from tanks to buildings to the craftworlds themselves. Wraithbone is a psychoactive crystalline substance that they can literally grow by drawing power from the warp. The occupied spirit stones slot straight into it and can be used to control things because of the nature of its psychoactive structure/circuitry.
And also there's an infinity circuit in every craftworld where souls can be uploaded, so to speak, from spirit stones. These souls can be downloaded to spirit stones again (with some negotiation) in order to use them to pilot (to a degree) wraith constructs like the titans, dreadnoughts (aka wraithlords) and tanks.

Fun fact about Soul Stones and why they're only found on Crone Worlds: the "Path of the Outcast" book reveals they're actually the crystallized ghosts (or perhaps the memory echoes) of those Aeldari who died and were consumed by Slaanesh's birth, who are forced to re-live their final moments again, and again, and again for what seems to be the Dark Prince's pleasure. They're not so much psy-tech as the hollowed out corpus of a dead Eldar's spirit, which can in turn be made to contain and protect the spirit of another Eldar they are psychically bound to.
In other words, Soul Stones are basically Matryoshka doll ghost-corpse amulets.
It seems every time midnight (aka. the "witching hour") occurs on a Crone World, these tortured ghosts temporarily transition into a mote of rapidly sublimating soulstuff in the process of "resetting'', which can crystallize into permanent physical form if touched by a living Eldar - thereby becoming a blank Spirit Stone.
The exact reason for why this process occurs is not explained, likely deliberately so the readers and in-universe characters can draw their own conclusions about it. Both hopeful (if the Eldar/reader subscribe to the belief Isha still exists and influences things) and horrific (Slaanesh could be intentionally letting this occur as a way of preventing its favourite source of food and entertainment from dying out).

Just a point, The Eye of Terror isn't a warpstorm, it's straight up a tear in reality that connects Realspace and the warp.

    there are actually warpspiders
    that maintain the webway
i dont think its ever elaborated on what exactly they are
but one of the warrior castes is named after them
ironically thats the caste of warriors that keeps poking holes in reality for the spiders to fix

The Warp Spiders are like Ork Stormboyz. Using a really terrible way of transportation but it works wonders. But instead of melee weapons they basically carry machine guns or flamethrowers and chew through infantry with a toughness lower than 4 then just teleport away to be annoying.
Fun fact also there Phoenix Lord is unknown, but some say it's just a giant spider that literally lives in the warp

The way I understood it is that the others formed over time slowly where as Slanesh had that sudden kickstart by the eldari.

You forgot to mention Isha, she survived cause Nurgle liked her because her domain was life and decided to kidnap her. Of course Nurgle then proceeded to experiment with his diseases on her. You also forgot to mention that Khaine was shattered but to be fair that’s not super important anyways.
