As a side note the chaos gods simply represent and feed on the emotions they represent. Pleasure and pain existed before Slaanesh it’s just that the elder muderfucked so hard that there was an excess of pain and pleasure that it eventually reached a critical mass and birthed Slaanesh. In theory if their was so little pleasure in the galaxy Slaanesh would lose power and eventually dissipate back into the warp. Same applies with the other Chaos gods.

Yup - there are those (Malcador) who see them not as embodiments or deities, but by-products and parasites that have gained far too much power.
Although, who knows? The 40 K universe is full of lies, misunderstandings, zealotry, and half truths. There’s a bunch of prophets of chaos who would very very much agree with what you said originally. Maybe they are lying to get more converts. Maybe the imperium is lying, using a scorched earth tactic to win against chaos at any cost. Maybe they all are as integral to reality and emotion, as some claim, and the truth of that is just too sick and sad to bear, so it gets denied.
Blessed be the mind too small for doubt, after all.

Emotions don't need chaos to exist, chaos just needs emotions to exist. Blanks have emotions without having a warp presence.
^This. The Chaos gods are not the progenitors of their respective emotions. They're merely what happens when so much emotion is shunted into the Warp by the subconscious of living creatures. They accumulate and congeal until those emotions coalesce into A Guy (or A Non-Binary, in Slaanesh's case). They are fed and sustained by emotions - they are "Of" those passions - rather than their source.
If Khorne perished in the Warp today, the galaxy would continue to feel anger. Over a long enough period, a new Khorne might coalesce into existence. Or something broadly similar.
Yes this for sure. The eldar were definitely having fun and joy before slaanesh was born. Emotion breeds chaos, chaos causes change, changes trigger emotion response. It’s a cycle but it isn’t a close cycle.
@@Bluecho4 chaos gods are not the body but rather the cancer in the realm of souls. They technically the things they claim to represent but twisted to their extremes. If slanesh dies tomorrow you would still have your emotions and excess but not to the point you'd be willing to rip your eyes out to experience the pain of it.

What if they aren't the origins of emotions nor merely feeding on them, but what if they are those emotions? I thought they were pools of sentient ideas, thus they could actually be emotions on a fundamental level.

Honestly the thing that i didnt expected from the Tyrion and Teclis trilogy was N'kari taking the form of a naked female elf when Malekith captured him, is such a 4d chess move, he makes Malekith look like a pervert in front of his generals, makes everyone feel uncomfortable in war councils, makes fun of Malekith for not having a "sword" that fully works and knows that he can get away with it because he is too valuable for Malekith's plans, any punishment can be parried with a "harder daddy" and he knows it, such a chad
The interesting part is as time went on N'kari started to act less like a daemon. No idea what that implies but it's neat that it happened!

The premier Warhammer Fantasy Champion of Slaanesh is noteworthy: Sigvald The Magnificent, the pretty boy who does wear assless chaps into battle and has a shield polished to a mirror sheen on the inside to admire himself while fighting, so much so he regularly stops in combat, infatuated by his own appearance
Favourite Sigvald moment is still his war with Bretonnia. Because fantasy French wine is shit, and deserves an entire Chaos invasion as punishment.
My favorite fact is that he float a few cm off the ground so he never has to stain his boots and walk on the same ground has everyone else’s.
Not to forget his Mirror Guard, who wear polished armor and mirrored shields so that Sigvald can see himself as he fights alongside his personal warriors.

That’s barely half of it, Slaanesh is the deity of excess, as in the excess of anything and everything. Obsession is the primary emotion, the obsession to make the perfect piece, the obsession to sample the perfect pleasure (or pain, the difference is minimal to them) and the obsession to hone a skill to perfection.
To continue, even the machinations of the other gods can feed Slannesh, that berzerkers desire for the perfect kill, the pride the Sorcerer feels in the perfect plan along with the plague marine’s obsession with spreading decay all contribute to the Lord of Excess.
The fact you need a sorcerous ritual and psychic 'wizardry' to summon Khorne demons even tho Khorne hates psykers and psychic-powered things - might fuel Tzeentch :p@@The.Orange.Wizard

Tzeentch is a Channel i would Subscribe to, but Nurgle sounds also interesting.
Honestly i feel like being a Chaos undivided the longer i think. All sounds good.
Tzeentch would more likely have an unhinged prank channel, just ruining people's days for kicks.
Nurgle's would be a wholesome cooking channel where you see just how many things can live in a kitchen.
Slaanesh's channel is always 3 clicks away from taking you to your nearest local dealer with a 35% discount
Really short version; space elves basically ruled the galaxy, and they got bored and starting having knife ass orgies, the psychic backlash of the knife assing orgies created Slaanesh who promptly devoured 90% of all space elf souls
The coolest thing in my opinion about Slaanesh is also the reason why Tzeentch decided to force the conflict between Khorne and She Who Thirsts.
Slaanesh is arguably the strongest and will become the strongest chaos god. As one of the emotions that influences it is Obsession. And Tzeentch saw how when someone worshipped and OBSESSED over him or one of the other gods... it fed Slaanesh.
So its a diversification of the investment portfolio. Got it.

Then again, others theorize the chaos gods are the embodiments of those emotions and their actual destruction would also destroy those emotions.... and since you really cannot do so without removing all emotion-fuel in the galaxy (all sentient life), then in a way or another, the chaos gods would still survive any sort of destruction wrought on them, or they'd be absorbed into some greater chaos entity if weakened to such an extreme, etc.

Slaanesh is also much more than just the 'sex' part. It's also indulgence in all it's facets. What your 5 senses can experience is what Slaanesh embodies. A chef seeking to make even better food - slaanesh related but not necessarily chaos worshipper or corrupted. Same with a painter creating art, a dancer on stage, etc. It's about actions to cause an emotional response. Sex being an obvious one to use as an example - with it taken to an extreme is where the erotic pleasure of torture, where pain is just another pleasure to explore as well, etc. etc. But it can be applied to just about anything 'meant to express something that causes emotion'.
As for, well, the whole what is easiest of fall to? That's sort of hard. Slaanesh usually influences where there is calm and 'peace', since it's easier to corrupt when everyone else are not busy trying to murder eachother, dying of plague or scheming themselves into mutation-hellfire.
Khorne is war, battle, fighting, survival of the fittest. it's such a core and base emotional need. Suffer under tyranny? Khorne is what allows the subjects under that tyranny to rise up and fight back against it, to fight for their own betterment and survival.
But then again, that is also Tzeentch related in the whole changer of ways, with giving the path to have circumstances chance for the better, to plan and prepare for said war and fight against the tyrants ruling over you.
And then also again, that includes Slaanesh also since without the active DESIRE to have those circumstances change, to WANT to live, not merely survive, to ENJOY a better existence, to be happy about the fact that your children might have a better life.
And then again once more you also have Nurgle involved with that scenario, in that Nurgle is about LIFE as well, to live, to seek to keep existing, but also to be at peace with the fact you will eventually die and thusly giving reason to WHY you may wish things to change, because life is finite. Nurgle is also the liberation of suffering and to be part of a greater whole.
Essentially each chaos god embodies the core emotional desires themselves and thusly a basic scenario of 'evil bad tyrant ruling with iron fist' can involve the emotional effects of more than simply a single chaos god.
As someone who literally just got into Warhammer last week, this is my favorite series. Please don’t stop.

Its not really if you killed one of the chaos gods, those emotions would cease to be. Its more, the only way they would ever die is if those emotions were destroyed entirely. The emotions would have to cease before they do.
Cause theyre formed from those emotions in the warp, not that they create those emotions.
That’s not entirely the case, lesser Chaos gods have been “killed” but something new with their portfolio eventually coalesces. Though with the big four they might recorporeate if “killed” that said maybe killing them might reset them to their more neutral personality (rather than their evil aspect).
@@Anaxemenies Yeah, you could possibly 'kill' a chaos god in some other way, but the emotions still manifest in the warp so eventually either they would probably reconstitute or another god would rise up in their place.

To put it a different way if someone doesn´t understand:
The existence of the chaos gods ARE dependant on the existence of their concepts.
The existence of the concepts ARE NOT dependant on the existence of chaos gods.
Concepts like happyness/pleasure and such existed before Slaanesh.
It´s just that it was spawned from the overwhelming presence those emotions had in the Warp.
There has been time before chaos gods when there were already emotions and warp, so that means that existence of emotions and warp thingies is not necessarily tied to chaos gods existence, so maybe you could kill it and it would die and rest would stay, but it will be probably hard to do.
They are demons born from feating on the emotions of mortals, their death would not affect the emotions they feast on the same way killing a wolf would not affect a sheep, but as long as the sheep is areound another wolf would crawld out of the forest to feast on their meat
People have a tendency to get blinded by the sexy part of Slaanesh and ignore the Excess part which ruins everything.

I think you really missed by not including how Slaanesh came into being.

I think it works the other way around where if there were no violence there would be no Khorn, if there was no kink there would be no Slaneesh. When the first sentient with a warp presence started getting a little kinky a proto Slaneesh started forming in the warp, but it took the full on Eldar End of Days party to bring She Who Thirsts into full existence.
A good explanation of the choas gods is this quote i like: "and just like how they need us we need them, just as how the gods are our thought feeling and emotions, our thoughts feelings and emotions are the gods. We can not exist without them."

I read something once where it's like, whoever is speaking to slaanesh, they see slaanesh as whatever they find to be most sexually attractive. This took me too long to make sure the spellings are all correct, but I am still very proud of this comment
some interesting bits of lore.
One of the most prominent followers of Slanesh is an ex space marine know as Lucius the Eternal. That dude's deal is that he is immortal, but with a catch. He can die and has done so very often, but if the man that killed him feels the most minimal sense of pride or happiness at killing him, that person will eventually mutate and turn into Lucius, and his soul will be trapped on Lucius armor for all eternity, forever reminding Lucius that he was bested in battle and never to have a rematch again. Considering Lucius has an ego bigger than Slanesh's dong, I say he is more cursed than blessed.

@@SilverionX I think that's beside the point. My comparison is to the qualities of the houses regardless. Gryffindor is bravery, so Khorne, regardless of evil. Ravenclaw is knowledge and wisdom, so Tzeench, regardless of evil.

The IMMEDIATE cutaway... I have no words to fathom how deeply that sundered my soul. Nor do I have an answer to the unfinished question. I suspect I never will.
From the perspective of Fantasy; they were all around since the beginning of time.
From the perspective of 40k; old lore had a specific timeline which I want to say went Khorne, Nurgle, Tzeentch all in the span of a couple centuries (Mongol conquests, Black Death, Renaissance) then Slaanesh (Fall Of The Eldar). Modern lore has been kind of jumping around on the first three (I THINK its currently a slow wake up thing where the gradual awakening of Daemons eventually woke those three up) while keeping Slaanesh after the Fall.
From the perspective of the Warp; because time shenanigans, once a god exists they have always existed. IE, once Slaanesh was born it was retroactively inserted through the 'history' of the Warp.
Slaneesh is basically Clive Barker's Hellraiser.

Only 3 ways to beat the chaos gods.
1: Kill/Suspend all Life in the Galaxy for a long time. Starve them out, straight forward
2: Focus Positive Emotions on a Galactic Scale into the warp until they are overwhelmed. The Chaos gods have been twisted but can be changed to more pure beings
3: Create Gods of Order to balance out the Warp

I’ve REALLY come around on slaanesh, not only cause she just resonates with me as an artist, I just love her aesthetic.
Every chaos god represents a sort of demonic aesthetic. Khorn is fire and brimstone, tzeench is lovecraftian cosmic horror, nurgle is undead underworld death rot demons, slaanesh really has this almost lucifer trickster demon aesthetic with the sorta gender ambiguity like in devil man crybaby which I really dig.

2 things to add:
1) You got C'Tan and Chaos Gods mixed up. If you kill a C'Tan, that concept would be removed from reality. Kill a Chaos God and all his demons would disappear. They just nourish themselves on the emotions, they aren't anchoring them in reality.
2) The age of Chaos Gods doesn't matter. If one is born, due to the nature of the warp, it's as if he always existed. We know Slaanesh is the youngest, because we know what caused its birth. But due to being born, it always existed and always will.

6:40 I think it is the other way around, the Chaos Gods exist as a product of those emotions emerging within sentient life, and they need sentient life to keep experiencing those emotions in order for them to keep going.
In WH40k, debauchery and excess existed for millions of years but only when the Eldar did the big oopsie it became a god. If Slaanesh were to be destroyed, debauchery and excess would still exist
You're 100% correct. Moreover Slaanesh, or perhaps a proto slaanesh, totally existed before her birth, but was not empowered- not a large force in the warp before the Eldar willed him into existence. This is why the "which god came first" debate is tricky (even though its almost certainly Tzeentch or Nurgle)
@@Dan-bq1dz I think the first ones to come first were Nurgle and Khorne because the despair of death and disease and the desire to kill are more primitive and most likely the first ones to become part of the collective conscious of inteligent beings, and as they develop that's when the hope and ingenuity show up, which would then feed Tzeentch.
But these three are definitely the primal ones.

Best story with Slaanesh is the marine who pushed his way through all the realms of Slaanesh. Managed to rebuke all forms of enticement and impulse, but upon entering Slaanesh's chambers just fails right there at their sheer force of power she exudes. Also, no talking about the Noise Marines? Like, sure Khorne Beserkers are cool as they just run at you all angry and kill themselves sometimes as a sacrifice of themselves to Khorne, but Noise Marines straight up turn their targets into piles of pulp and bone with just pure sound waves.
Slaneesh is mostly associated with sexual stuff but its actually the excess of ANYTHING - Obsessing about making the perfect meal, creating the best painting, the most amazing drinks, being the fastest at a race, creating the perfect symphony, eating the most food etc. If you obsessively think about and take things like these to an excess, that's also a path to Slaanesh. If you've seen that Perfume movie where the guy kills people to create the perfect scent is the best representation.

You should have mentioned that Slaanesh is the vore one since Karilynne mentioned that in the Khorne video.
Reasons:
1. Literally ate the souls of 90% of the Eldar population and continues to eat the souls of any who perish without a soul stone (or the assistance of the Ynarri or Harlequin factions)
2. Vore is a fetish and also includes the aspect of excess (gorging yourself but with people)

Khorne would play the whole thing properly and flip the table when he realizes everyone is cheating
Nurgle would be playing with the pieces and treating them like dolls having a tea party
Tzeentch would've stacked them all into a pillar and then put them on the targeting board instead of the playing board
Slaanesh would probably have started shoving the pieces into various unmentionable locations, because Slaanesh does that with anything that isn't bolted down
Malice, because we've always gotta mention him, would've put all of the pieces right next to each other and would've sat in the one place with a mirror behind him
Vashtorr wouldn't have been invited because of last game where he made the boats actually fire missiles

Tbh I see the warp as an approximate reflection of the material universe and all the emotions and acts in it. All the stronger ones end up “snuffing” out the others.

Weird thing with the themes of Slaanesh... They're all about Joy, Pleasure, Rock and Roll, Sex, Beauty, Perfection and Excess, and Debauchery, then as an Extension of Pleasure and Excess Torture Comes out eventually... But, The weird thing is, Literally 100% of Slaanesh's Daemons are Themed around Torture... Torture and Pain are the Most MINOR aspects of this Chaos God compared to every other aspect of them, Yet every emendation of them we see are ALL about that ONE Trait... It's Contradictory... Especially When you consider that Slaanesh is supposed to HATE Khorne, Since ANY War and Bloodshed Makes Khorne Stronger, shouldn't Slaanesh be against the Concept of Wanton War and Massacre just by principle of their opposition to Khorne? If Torture and Slaughter are the MAIN things that Slaaneshi Daemons Do outside the Warp, then Doesn't that mean that Nearly every action done in the Name of Slaanesh ends up Making Khorne Stronger while NONE of the actions done in the name of Khorne help Slaanesh in any way? (Aside from Sadists that Enjoy the Slaughter I Guess? Because Joy... But they're the Exception, not the Norm)... If that's the Case, shouldn't Slaanesh be considered a subordinate of Khorne? And Yet they're Supposed to be Nearly Equal and opposed. That doesn't Feel right if one of them is constantly making the other Stronger while that other one Successfully Deletes the tings that Makes the First one Stronger (Corpses don't Feel Joy or Excess)...
As an example of how WEIRD this is, Let me use Greek Mythology as an Example: Everybody knows that Ares is the God of Brutal War and Bloodshed, he's the War God that doesn't think about Strategy and just Charges in and Physically Dominates Fights, that's his whole thing... But, he also has a Minor Association with Rams, as in Sheep... Now Imagine if you were told "This is THE Brutal Wargod of Bloodshed!" an then every Story and myth you hear about him is all just about him peacefully sitting in a Meadow petting Sheep and being wholesome, and he NEVER actually goes to War or Fights anything, EVER... Like, What Credentials Does he have to be Classified as a God of War then? He Never DOES War, he doesn't Fight, he's not even Violent or Aggressive, Yet you are TOLD he's a War God.... Does that Sound Credible to any of you? Because it sure as hell doesn't to me!
It's the Same Principle with Slaanesh, we're TOLD they're the Chaos God of Joy, Pleasure, Sex, Beauty, Perfection, and THEN Excess, But All we ever See is the Excess pushed to most absolute Negative Extreme which causes mass Bloodshed, Where's the other Traits?! Like Yeah, I Get that Warhammer is a WAR Game, and everything pretty Much only exists to Kill each other... But would it be so Hard to come up with Alternate Win conditions for Slaanesh Armies that Basically Deal with Making the other side UNABLE to Kill and Slaughter anymore, Pacify them into a Self Destructive Orgy where they forget that they need to eat, or to the other Extreme they Eat to the point of Poisoning themselves with the Excess Food... Or they Just become Pacifists unable to fight or even feel Anger and just become Living Sex toys for the Daemonettes... It's not like Mental Chaos Magic/Psychic powers aren't a thing that could make that happen...And Yeah, the End Result is Still Death, so same end result, but Not a VIOLENT Death (In the Sense of Explodifying Bodies in a Mess of Gore), which would be a Victory for Slaanesh that DOESN'T Make Khrone Stronger from the Carnage... Feels more thematic to me.

speaking of killing chaos gods in one of the horus heresy books, the emperor and malcador are talking and are implying that the astronomicon is a warp EMP meant to rest the warp and chaos back into the realm of souls from before the events of the war in heaven
Slaanesh is what you get if you don't stop. Like when you earn money and you never stop trying to earn more, eventually you change the method, bend laws, break them, rob, steal and murder all to earn a bit more. At first it's all about you having more, then it becomes all about what you have being more and more valuable. Then making sure other has less, and what they have needs to be less valuable. In the end you realize that if the others don't exist then what you have is worth the most out of everything. Oh and Slaanesh just gave you a high five for getting this far and also have some ideas as to how you can get further still.
favorite representation of the followers of slaanesh is from a Dawn of War mod, wherein your noise marines switch the pronouns of Slaanesh every other sentence. Love it.
You said that if Slaanesh went away, then lust/joy/etc would also go away because the chaos gods are the source of these emotions. You have it backwards, the chaos gods are manifestation of the emotions and would cease to exist if the emotions ceased to be common/dominant parts of the psyches of intelligent beings. Just think about Slaanesh's origin for corroboration.

Nurgle being the first chaos god makes the most sense to me. Entropy was a thing immediately. I'd guess Khorne second, because violence is pretty intrinsic in nature. Then Tzeentch, because you have to evolve higher functions to start plotting.
Well maybe sentient beings didn't understand death as a problem.
I just see 40k as an extension of our own history so Khorne gained sentience around all of the wars we've had, then Nurgle gained sentience around the black death in europe, and later the extinction of the south-americas from disease the europeans brought with them, and then tseentch in the 21st sentury
always thought that the commonly accepted lore was Nurgle (entropy started as soon as the universe was born), then Tzeentch within the Medieval period on Terra (maturation of human society/civilization/politics), then Khorne right after that in Terra's Medieval period as well, then Slaneesh's birth is a recent (relatively) event, which was the entire catalyst for the Aeldari to take to their ships

There is no reason to assume that emotions would cease when a Chaos God "dies." After all, the feelings already existed before these beings took shape. The Chaos Gods are not the source of emotions, but the end product.
