  • Is the left knee the key to your golf swing? Challenge Tour player Liam Robinson thinks so. He says that fixing the movement of the left knee in your golf swing will improve strike and dispersion, while simplifying and improving your golf swing.

    Great stuff Rob. In your vlog with Liam last year, (part 6) I remember suggesting you compare your lower body action with his!! Whaddacoach!! I had the same problem and achieved the lower body resistance by flaring my left foot out. This took me from 4 hcp to +1
    People always overlook lower body action not realising that it governs the rest of the swing.
    Achieving lower body resistance will absolutely transform your ball striking. It is a fundamental of every great golf swing.

    Liam lesson.
    I struggle with too much lateral sway/left knee movement. One of the things I did/do to firm it all up is make the takeaway slower so I basically don't have so many forces at work and gives me that 1/2 second extra to make a better transition and then apply the gas where it's needed through the hitting area..It's a work in progress but has improved my distance, accuracy and consistency. Those 3 then have a knock on effect with that fragile thing called Confidence.
    Would be great to meet Liam (and yourself) Great to have you back Rob.... All the best John (Essex)

    Hi Rob, great to see this. I had a lesson with Liam around the same time as this was recorded. Guess what we focused on the same issue, left knee. Some 8 months later my handicap has come down from 5 to 4 and is on its way to 3. My consistency is vastly improved. Liam is a top guy and love being part of TGN it’s such a fantastic group. Looking forward to hosting TGNers at Remedy Oak Dorset next week.

    Early this year I listened to Arnold palmer's audiobook, he quipped that what made him a good ball striker from early on was that his legs and head were very still, I tried keeping my lower half more quiet this season and have noted improvement, dropping 3 shots, Liam's left knee advice is similar and makes so much sense, I love how he describes how he figured things out in the swing. Great video!

    I’m seventy years old and I’ve watched hundreds of golf videos and may I say that your video is exceptionally enlightening..
    I’ve turned my head right on the backswing because of a spinal operation. In other words I lose sight of the ball before swinging. When the ball comes into view I panic and come across the ball. I’ll try your method and hopefully things may change. “Great Video”.

    Been trying this and it seems to work... I found by having the lead foot pointing towards 10 on the clock face and just having this has a swing thought has helped and it also helps stop me moving too much to the right on the back swing. I am still hitting some crap shots but now less so and the best thing is I am not getting stuck.

  • @bradericksen3175
    @bradericksen3175 5 лет назад +1

    Love it. I have actually doubled down on this swing thought and I try to keep my right knee from moving/straightening in the backswing. Less moving parts with a better coil = greater ball striking and improved distance and accuracy. Liam is spot on in my book.

    Liam lesson. Totally with you on this Rob, hearing Liam was like hearing my coach again. And my before video was just like yours, a baby giraffe swaying in the wind, lol. My first swing thought now is to bend my left knee slightly.... makes it impossible to sway. Like you, my ball striking improved straight away. Does Liam do lessons other than your competition, which I shall add "Liam Lesson" to enter? If so, where is he located and how do I contact him?
    In your previous golf journey videos I recommend George Gankas as someone to look at and Liam focusing on the legs like this is very similar to some of the videos that I've seen him do. I especially love the ignoring the hands and arms as it makes total sense for these to be led by the bigger lower body muscles. The arms move at six times the speed of the body but a perfect golf swing would have them moving at the same speed - it's not possible to speed the body up to meet the arms so the only way is to slow the arms down yet if you ask most golfers to swing it faster they will almost certainly try to speed their arms up as that is how our simple human brains work!

    Hi Rob, nice to see your back with new found enthusiasm. Much better lower body action and I can hear the quality of strike ! Well done. I would hazard a guess, that with staying more central, you have had to change the ball position with your Driver and moved it nearer your left instep. Take care and stay strong. Kim.

    • @RobMcGarr
      @RobMcGarr  5 лет назад

      Cheers Kim, it's good to be back! I always looked to have it around level with my left instep anyway - I normally hit up on my driver by a few degrees. Hope you're well 👍

    Liam lesson. Can't wait to try this out later today in the range. I haven't been able to rid myself of a pully transition and rotten chicken wing in follow through. Let's see if some of these moves can help address that. Been playing for just over a year now. Moved back from Mexico to Ireland and I have no clubs or course membership. It's tips like these that get me motivated to go out and play and keep up the golf!

  • @barking_mad6649

    So I went to the range and tried to execute this. The knee flex was a big issue for me and getting a reverse c at impact leading to a high towering ball flight. Generally I strike the ball well but I'm haunted by some randomly bad, and I mean BAD shots. Results? This was a definite improvement. I felt more turn/staying over (covering) the ball and less slide and flip at release. I hit about half a dozen 7 irons in a row at one point that were so pure and flew lower but a good 15 yards longer, genuinely felt "Wow!" . I couldn't replicate the feeling all session, but it felt like genuine progress. Oh and Liam is such a nice guy!

    I love that step back step forward drill... basically like throwing a ball you step forward and throw... If you keep your left knee forward it will shorten your swing and get you on a better path ... everything fine for me... you shouldn’t lift your left heel intentionally but let it happen and the further you turn the more it will raise without thinking ...
    17:40... he mentioned what some found out... I sometimes really wonder what they look at... the feeling may be when the hands are hip high that they are already in a forward motion but the pressure is 1000% not on the left leg... as he mentions Jamie sadlowski... watch any of his videos... especially if he wants to get after one... at the top of his swing his left heel is high up in the air and the knee behind the ball... keeping the left knee forward may be good for precision and will work for people but resistance of the lower body against the upper body is NOT helping speed... it just hurts your lower back...
    Right now the fastest swing speed ever measured was just by joe miller in London ( just search for the long drive competition) wholistic had a club head speed of 157 or 158 (can’t remember 100%) just look how far behind the ball his left knee goes... no restriction of the lower body...
    i am not talking about consistency but about the claim that the wind up between lower and upper body creates speed...
    Otherwise keep looking forward to your videos... keep them coming...

    I feel we have pretty much the same flaws. I see my swing so much in yours.
    Had a lesson and was told the same thing. A good drill was to put a football or something in between. Great video mate

      Or some players use a resistance band around their knees 👍🏼

      I would prefer the band around the knees, as it forces you to use the muscles to keep the knee out (eg left glute). The ball just prevents knee from coming in, you can ingrain the new feeling at top of backswing (for me feel really different with left knee out), but you have to learn to engage those muscles.

    Liam Lesson...great video again Rob. If Elvis had a golf swing that would be me! I had a lesson recently and probably i had the same problem. To help fix this the pro had me lift my right heel (putting weight on the left side)...was also working on better rotation and width...but can honestly say like you mentioned had much better compression of the ball + distance + better shots = dont we enjoy the game that little bit more when we hit consistent and better shots? I will be sure to watch your 1 hour video when its uploaded...
    Sorry last thing...if it was so easy we would all be on the tour...keep working hard like we all have to and maybe we will get a swing that somehow resembles a tour pro
