As a Japanese native and ESL, I totally understand why Shohei still needs interpreter. Interviews get way too technical with baseball terminologies and vague nuances. Ippei really does PERFECT job interpreting everything Shohei says... PERFECTLY forreal. Besides, he came here to play baseball, not study English. Seems like he did learn some basic conversational English thou, which is great for i say day to day living and team building with mates. Edit: I’m just gonna say I am super disappointed by everything happening right now between Ippei and Shohei. I believe in Shohei’s statement since Ippei was more than just interpreter. He was a manager and personal assistant as well. But we’ll see whats gonna happen.
If he wants to be marketable and have an easier life in America then he needs to learn English. English is the de facto international language so if you learn it, it's only helping yourself
Even if he puts in the time, it's very hard for non native speakers to handle these types of situations. Just look at a lot of foreign students in the US. Their English skills are fine, but still, having to translate back and forth between two languages while maintaining a conversation pace is hard.
As an Asian I can say we understand English just fine but it might be difficult for majority of us to express our thoughts in English verbally. So I am sure Shohei understands English well, he just wants to make sure he is able to express himself well with no misunderstanding so he prefers having someone to translate his responses.
It doesn't matter how well you can speak its always better to speak if you can. But it doesn't appear that Ohtani has a big enough English vocabulary to speak at all. He came to America late so it will be hard for him to learn.
@@peenhead9938 He's a public figure and people will eat up every word. He can communicate in English, but he prefers an interpreter to make sure the words are carefully communicated.

Foreign players keep interpreters so they won't answer certain questions. Matsui, Ichiro, lots of Hispanic players actually do know English well. You really find out who knows English when you have seats next to the dugout or bullpen.
Guys it’s inconsequential. Learning up English is not a must-do thing. He has been showing himself through his baseball. That’s already an enough way for him to communicate with fans.

However, his team might need him for English communication, sometimes. That’s something the fans could consider. US has no official language but it’s evident that knowing some English is necessary here. Munenori Kawasaki is a fine example of working hard at English without a translator in the game.

If I was in a non-English speaking country where not many people spoke English, I would be making it a huge priority to learn the native language.
For those people who are saying "he has to learn English", are you sure if you happened to became very famous in a foreign country whose language is totally different from your native language, and if you were getting serious media interviews, don't you want to use a decent interpreter who can handle media interviews so well, not missing out your words, won't damage your public image?
