As a German I always thought that english is one of the easiest languages to learn. After a while I realized that it really depends on where you are from, where your parents are from, what your interests are..... What a lovely interview :)
German and English are distant relatives, at least in their structure. Learning a lanuage that doesn't follow any of the grammatical or phonetic rules your're familiar with is so much harder.
English is a Germanic language, so it's relatively easy for a native German speaker to learn English, and vice versa. Japanese and English on the other hand are two of the most different languages from each other, so relatively it's extremely difficult for a native speaker of Japanese to learn English, and vice versa. It's easier for a native Japanese speaker to learn Chinese because of the borrowed writing system and many loanwords, or Korean because of the similar grammatical features.
Like.. I laugh because he sounds like my 4 year old son.. but then I remember I can barely speak one language and this guy is like, "yea, I'll just learn these other 2 languages.."
You americans shouldn't feel bad about only speaking 1 language. To us foreigners its easy to learn english because EVERYTHING is in english...it was never hard work, but entertainment. @@AK-Kessler0907 in Indonesia better yet. we're here when we speak with an American accent. but when it comes to dictionaries and theory, we use British English.
@@AK-Kessler0907 That and the USA is so massive that most people will never leave it or have a reason to speak another language. Don't get me wrong we're taught a new language in school (maybe not well.. But still). I just couldn't speak one sentence in French and I took it for 4 years lmao. But I'm sure if I found myself traveling to Quebec (not too far from my state of NY) I'd use it more. Lots of countries in Europe are very close together and very different in terms of culture and languages. Some states in America are as big as countries. It's neat to see all the different accents within the US tho.
I've heard that native Japanese speakers are often very impressed with how well Americans sound speaking the language. It helps when you've mastered more than enough sounds speaking English.
I think that's the part that stood out to me. Learning a new language, I find that it takes a lot more effort than I thought to concise and get my point across on the fly. I spend too long trying to just lay out full sentences. This guy is not only learning a language with WAYYY more of a disparity (I'm just learning French), but he was expected to respond on video interview -- where you can't really just sit and piece things out before talking. It takes a seriously well-ordered mindset to be able to handle
I’m Japanese and what’s very impressive is his continuity in thought, he speaks very confidently regardless of the language barrier, try taking 3 years of Spanish and go to Mexico can you really cohesively communicate? I tried this and I miserably failed, people talk about how his English is bad but the grammar is really unimportant the central idea he is trying to convey is
If you're diligently studying Spanish for three years straight and can't hold a decent conversation while in Mexico, then it kinda sounds like it's the students or teachers fault at that point.
@@grimmsby3011 One of the issues I've witnessed (and least here in Europe) is that the language taught in schools and universities tends to be the most distilled, filtered out and standardized form. You know, the type of language you'd generally hear being used on TV or in dubbed movies: 100% correct, clean and clear. But very few people actually speak like that in real life. I studied Spanish for 4 years in university, I could read without issues, comprehend complex ideas and hold a conversation with other people in my university. And then I went to Barcelona. Confident in my abilities, I started a conversation with a bunch of locals. They were really impressed, and even commented on the fact that I sounded "like a TV host". But then they started talking more, and I realized that *they* could understand everything I was saying, but I could only catch like half of their speech. Because A: they were speaking much faster than I anticipated, B: they weren't trying to pronounce everything clearly (as I've been taught), C: they used obscure local terms and idioms I wasn't familiar with, and D: some of them also had pieces of Catalan in there. And I felt like a complete fool XD Sometimes the only way to actually learn how to speak a language is to practice it with the locals, at least occasionally. Even better if you can live somewhere where they speak the language - but that's not that easy, obviously.

English and German are very similar
english is german mixed with french
Dude it's probably the hardest to learn from scratch.

To us foreigners its easy to learn english because EVERYTHING is in english...it was never hard work, but entertainment.
Movies, TV shows, games, etc, etc....

@@AK-Kessler0907 well, its better to learn french than going mad at people not being able to speak english in paris.
@@AK-Kessler0907 in Indonesia better yet. we're here when we speak with an American accent. but when it comes to dictionaries and theory, we use British English.
@@AK-Kessler0907 That and the USA is so massive that most people will never leave it or have a reason to speak another language. I’m Japanese and what’s very impressive is his continuity in thought, he speaks very confidently regardless of the language barrier, try taking 3 years of Spanish and go to Mexico can you really cohesively communicate? I tried this and I miserably failed, people talk about how his English is bad but the grammar is really unimportant the central idea he is trying to convey is
I'm not trying to brag or anything i'm just answering your question
Yes
One thing that probably helped his English/Spanish development is that he spends so much time around native speakers. Immersion is really important!
@Team rocket rockin Why so rude. I think its interesting to hear from the perspective of someone else who tried to learn English.
And I felt like a complete fool XD
Sometimes the only way to actually learn how to speak a language is to practice it with the locals, at least occasionally. Even better if you can live somewhere where they speak the language - but that's not that easy, obviously.
This guy seems sick! Never heard or seen him in my life, but i'd hang out with him.
