  • Mookie talks about the humbling experience playing with Shohei Ohtani, the White Sox losing 121 games, the Dodgers being favored to win the World Series, immersing himself in baseball, playing pickleball with strangers at the park, not being a fan of the team hotel in Milwaukee because it’s said to be haunted, and Dodgers having specific celebration moves.

Mookie often talks about Ohtani on his podcast & how humbling it is to play with him & how that makes him a better player. Instead of viewing Ohtani’s talent as a threat, he openly praises him to help maintain his confidence - cause when Ohtani plays his best, his team wins & helps them get to the WS.
Also, the questions/topics discussed are all predetermined & approved by both parties, & the guest usually suggests the topics. So, this is all coming straight from Mookie himself.

With all due respect, inviting Mookie while pitting him against a teammate whom he very much respect is just not it. Both can be great at the same time, not sure why you don't ask him more of himself instead since he has a lot of materials to be asked about. Also, Ohtani has never been absent to give Mookie his flowers on lots of Japanese interviews. This is a very classless interview. I feel sorry for both Mookie and Ohtani cause this kind of BS gotta be so mentally exhausting for both of them.

As an Angels/Shohei fan, this is what Mike Trout kinda had to deal with as well. It bums me out because it's not Shohei's fault he's a once in a generation talent, but asking his MVP teammates endless questions about another athlete's feats is just awkward. I definitely understand how both of them would feel weird answering the same questions over and over.

Perfectly said what I was thinking, feel like Kimmel is trying to cause drama or tension right before the playoffs...They're teammates who obviously respect each other a lot and Ohtani has used every chance he gets to praise Mookie even before they were teammates (ie: when asked who impressed him the most last year Ohtani answered Mookie). Just lame to embarass your guest by using his teammate.

But if your team has a bigger superstar than you this will happen. Moreover the interviewer is a comedian, so he likes to turn rudeness into laughter.
And here we go back to the beginning. Shohei and Mookie's job is to lead the team to W. Mookie appeared on this show of his own free will.

I actually think the amount of time mentioning Ohtani isn't that much comparing to clubhouse interview in which players encounter.
Jimmy has to mention it somehow anyway. He and Mookie just kinda make fun of it and go on to next topic. It could be so much more Ohtani-centric, but 73 seconds is alright. It just a matter of formality.
Did you find that Mookie didn't need to use many superlatives today? Just a bit laid back and being passively agreeable is enough. It's not like Mookie wants to be considered as true goat to be offended.
No matter who is interviewed, he would casually give same compliments to others as well before get into personal topics.

Ohtani isn't even in he top 15% MLB players in terms of pure speed. The fact that he had 59 stolen bases (and actually, even MORE 'real' stolen bases than Elly de la Cruz if you subtract the number times caught stealing) is incredible and speaks to his skill. Base stealing isn't just about speed. It's skill (timing, knowing exactly when to go, how to slide to avoid the tag, etc.)

Sounds like a lot of people in the comments have a complex with Ohtani. Sheesh. Just because you were offended doesn’t mean Mookie was too. He often talks about Ohtani on his podcast & how he’s on another level, which has made him a better player. He says some might find his greatness a threat, but he celebrates it & openly praises Ohtani to help him stay confident - cause when Ohtani plays his best, his team wins & helps them get to the WS.

@@ayydubs987 Mookie said that, not Jimmy. Mookie said “you work so hard your whole life, cause you want to be the best. But no matter how hard you work, you’re not gonna be better than him.” Mookie often speaks about this on his podcast & says Ohtani is on an another level, which motivates him to improve his own game. Instead of viewing Ohtani's talent as a threat, Mookie openly praises him to help maintain his confidence. After all, when Ohtani plays his best, his team wins & helps them get to the WS.
Plus, when it comes to interviews, the guest usually suggests the questions & both parties agree on the topics before they go live. So this is all coming from Mookie himself!

Some really fragile egos in this comment thread.
Anywho, I thought the question about being the favorites to win the World Series was worse - you have to get there first. Last year’s favorites, with a player who had a player with an even better season than Ohtani’s, didn’t make it out of the NLDS. Neither did the Dodgers, for that matter.
