RC Slipper Clutch Systems - How To Adjust, How They Work & More!

- Опубликовано: 14 июл 2024
- Today on RC Overload, I discuss how to go about adjusting your slipper clutch, how it works, and Issues you may come across.
Slipper Clutches are found on every single electric RC car and truck, and their designed to help protect the drivetrain on you RC. They work by allowing the initial power from the motor to slip for a brief moment before engaging the rest of the drivetrain. Without the slipper clutch system in place, you would end up replacing a lot more parts a lot sooner. Brushed and brushless motors produce a lot of torque verses typical gas and nitro engines. So Manufactures needed to come up with a way to help soften the initial torque that's produced by the electric motor itself.
Here are a couple of tips that might help you when it comes to adjusting your slipper clutch.
1 - Always refer to your owners manual for specific adjustment setting on the clutch.
2 - On high traction surfaces like pavement, its best if you loosen the slipper clutch slightly.
3 - On surfaces like dirt and gravel its ok to tighten up the slipper clutch some as the tires will give out on the gravel causing the drive train system to less likely break from the initial load of the motor.
4 - Always check your locking nut in the slipper clutch. more often then not i have come across lock nuts that wear out and become loose causing all sorts of issues for the slipper clutch.
5 - Don't hesitate to mess around with the adjustments to learn what setting works best for your driving style and the surface your driving on.

Props bro been out of the game 15 years and I'm now getting back into it with my son and a lot has changed. Thanks for the help 👍👍
Same here just bought a redcat piranha it's a good little cheap RC startup truck. Haven't had an RC since 2004
I was never in the game but starting out with a secondhand tmaxx… should you be able to make the slipper slip by hand?
@Leon Parkhill the tmax that's a bad ass truck and by hand that's gonna be too loose. I would set it on gravel and tighten 1/8-1/4 turn until it takes off without slipping that way it slips when it needs to IE. On blacktop or when landing on jumps
Same here!
Why would anyone dislike the video.. it's free info.. my word.. this world .. is so weird.. thanks for this video buddy.. appreciate the free info..
They're just trolls...
Hater's gonna hate, it's that simple.
@NECRO 69 maybe somebody.. you'll find a friend.. and maybe they'll be able to understand the utter rubbish you just wrote..
@NECRO 69 maybe the friend you make will care about your opinion too..
it’s jealousy, he is young, he is cool, he is smart, he explains greatly, he gave enough information. Jealousy is one of the 7....and because of the rubberfrom the locking nut...lots of people buy new clutches or rc cars and itonly was the nut :-)
Spent days trying to figure out the problem and 50 sites..you answered my problem in the first 35 secs l. of your video ...thank you
Thank you so much for taking the time to video what the slipper clutch actually does, and the noise that it makes.
I'm only 2 months in the sport with my bandit. Your video was awesome. Great learning curve. Thanks.
Had my truck smoking tonight and burned myself on the slipper clutch nut....this video helped me.foghure out what my issue was...thanks man! New subscriber!!!!
Holy shlt, it got that hot?
@punkfingerboards6283 yea..turns out I smoked the idler gear as well
Thank you for this video, great explanation, its exactly how and why I thought it would be, hearing it from some with more experience, it’s exactly what I needed!
I’m new to this, thank you
New to the Revo world...loving it.. and your way of braking out the fixes and upgrades.....awesome
I went through a couple videos on this subject, I found yours most helpful! Thank you for sharing this!
your videos are helpful and funny I've been in the hobby for almost a year and yea it's mostly the slipper clutch so thank you nice job
Thanks. This is the exactly what I needed. I’m new to RC and just bought an 1/16 E. Revo and on my 5th time driving it, I got the wizzing sound and no movement. I know now what it is and how to fix it. Thanks again brother.
I’ve been into the Traxxas rc trucks for a few years and this helped me a lot thank you
this is exactly what i needed, i noticed my rustler wasnt grabbing the clutch enough like it used to on launch and i was thinking the clutch has gotten loose, thanks man
thank you so much for showing me I adjusted my slipper clutch and it works Great again
Great video, now I know how to adjust my slipper clutch and know what to look out for.
Easy and to the point. Thank you
Great video of the slipper clutch functionality 👍
+Noeys fastrc thank you!
This is a great video that's easy to follow. Thank you.
Oh jesus thank you for this video. I was panicking thinking that my revo 3.3 clutch burned out. Never checked the slipper until now. Im a moron. Thank you
dude even if your clutch had burned out it isn't too hard to replace, theres videos out there, and you have a junk set your replacing to practice on
Thank you so much.i have been going crazy going through this car I just got. So well explained bro .
Great video - just one thing, introduce yourself (kind of like a news anchor does at the beginning of any news cast) - it'll help your audience relate to you better. You're very well spoken, you don't stumble around, you get to the point, explain it well, and are very prepared. You look like a long time pro doing this. Keep it up. Found you via a RUclips search when my 4x4 Stampede wouldn't move very well after installing a new velineon & 17T pinion. I took the spur out thinking I needed to change that, but the replacement I bought was the same size (I was only attempting to do a 54/17 combo to get top speed on the truck). Truck came stock with a 54T spur, so I only needed to change the pinion to the 17T. Unfortunately I messed with the slipper clutch lock nut.
What I learned from your video: What the hell the slipper clutch is for - how to adjust the nut just right, and why I might want it loose or tighter in some situations. I know nothing about RC... just started. But your videos have helped put me well on my way. I'm subscribing!
Thanks! (Whatever your actual name is.)
Awesome vid! Thanks Topher!
This is so help full I don’t know anything about rcs and it sounds and looks like I’ve got a loose slipper clutch
Thank you so much this explained everything to me
Very informative...and perfectly explanatory
Thank you so much! You’re the only one that could help me with this! My problem: loose nut. Liked and subscribed!💜
Nevermind lul, fixed for a few min but it’s not working again. Thanks anyways tho still helped me!
Its possible the nut keeps coming loose. sometimes its actually a good idea to just replace the nut and try again. if its still coming loose you could always try to add a second nut on their ive done it before and 9 out of ten times it works.

Good information, thank you!
Great info and delivery! Should help a lot of noobs save time, money and frustration.
Awesome video. Thank you!!
Well told and explained
Great tutorial, took notes like I was in School again ~! lol. But did learn something.
+Robert S Tiest hahaha thats awesome! Thanks for watching, and im glad you got something out of it.
Great video man thanks.
I learn something today with your video thanks
Great video, thank you.
thank you for these videos
This video actually made me realize that it WASN'T my slipper clutch. My rustler 4x4 wasn't doing wheelies after some upgrades I had done and I just couldn't figure out what was going on. My slipper was tightened nearly all the way and still no wheelies. Well.. at some point I had put the esc into 50% mode and didn't realize it remembers what mode it was in last. Needless to say, I adjusted the esc setting just in case and it turned out I was running half power the whole time! New to this hobby, so definitely a learning experience in troubleshooting. Either way though, I learned alot about my slipper clutch! So, thank you for that!
Thank you. That help a lot
Very nice video 👊🏿👊🏿
great info! thanks for sharing
+Flash Hobbies No problem! Hopefully it will help some new guys in the hobby.
I slightly tightened my gen8 just barely and it fixed all the issues it was having.. spinning and not crawling as it was... after a inspection and adjustment it’s back on the trail! I’m very new to RC, couldn’t believe how much a slight adjustment like that made lol
Very helpfull to me thank you
Thank you!
My son had a db10 reflex. His friend rammed into the back of his and it was a hard hit. Now it makes a funny sound. I did check under the gear cover and everything seemed fine. I am new to this and don't have a hobby shop to take it to in the town I live in. I have a video of the sound and can take pictures. I have compared it to other sounds I have heard on here but can't find an exact match. Thank you for the help before hand.
Thank you so much i finally fixed my traxxas slash
very good information -...
Really good video thank you but a 3s battery in my truggy and it was making weird noises under heavy load I checked the lock nut and it was 3 turns from full changed it to 2 1/4 and it’s perfect thank you 🙏
Thank you so much
thank you so much, subscribed and turned on notifications!
Great intel
I thought this was a troll video until I read some comments....I’ve shredded everything in my drivetrain including the actual gearbox and never even came close to an issue with my slipper clutch, lol...and that’s the truth. When I actually ripped teeth off the sprockets inside my gearbox, that was the most trial and error I ever had to figure out what was wrong. Took my truck apart and put it back together 4-5 times before I decided to open up the whole gear box. Then I saw several gears just shredded and ordered new parts. It honestly is part of the fun of RC cars...ripping around and racing but also working on the car and tuning them is a ton of fun!!
my understanding the slipper clutch came into play when race tracks were loose dirt and to protect a ball diff as used back in the day when tracks were low traction.
Thx for the info I tighten mine to much gotta replace the whole slipper clutch
Thank you This was very informative and helpful!
Nice👌
Thanks
great vid dude😎 going to try it tomorrow. my nitro rustler is indeed less wheely happy atm🙈
+typhoon4545 thanks! And good luck, hopefully you get it sorted out!
We will see:-) love my rc car:-p
I had these same symptoms and it was the small gear in my transmission the one on the shaft with a little pin. I replaced it with a metal gear and haven’t had the problem since.
thank you
i have mine full tight and no issue for now with the castle sct 3800kv
I thank you for this just gone electric and I’m impressed. Got the Traxxas rustler… it it normal when you set of to hear the motor hum when first setting off ?
Thanks for using the car that i just bought. Mine came with the nut tightened all the way. Backed it off 3/4 turn. VXL 2WD. Should be safe?
Thank u
thanx man I kept burning off my teeth on my spur gear u just helped
+traxxas slash 2wd brushless no problem man. Also make sure you have a good gear mesh setting too and the motor mount screws done come loose. Lol ask me how i know. Lol
RC Overload I can't front I burned my spur gear
The "rubber" in the nut. Nylock = nylon. They were originally designed for military aircraft. Different colors of nylon also have different strength specifications. I only use them once depending on course/fine threads and application. Never use lubricants with nylocks, it defeats the purpose. If you can turn them by hand they are junk. Great info on the clutch though. I've picked up some helpful tips from your channel. Just thought I'd try to pay it back some.
Sort of, I suppose. China direct colors are definitely questionable at best. Spec charts of quality nylock hardware are available though and correct if manufacturing standards are followed.
nice.
Awesome video and very informative on the slipper clutch system. Since using your video I have adjusted mine tighter about 2.5 to 3 turns and my E-Firestorm 10HT reacts better then before.
Do you have any videos on adjusting the front and rear turnbuckles?
That awesome man! glad it helped ya out!
Just make a note of stock setting and have a go at adjusting and testing. Its trial and error, a lot of it if you don't know how each setting affects the car.
Have a read on camber, castor, toe and anti dive most of the stuff you'll find are 1:1 but it still applies
Nice video, thanks a lot.
What is that stand under the Rustler?
So i have a traxxas e revo and i was driving it at about 50% throttle and then accidently applied reverse trying to brake. Well the truck locked up and cartwheeled and mow all it does is grind and whine... its my first owned truck so ive never worked on them. Can you g
Tell me what im looking at to fix and the costs... and also what i might do to avoid this happening again.. it seems like it shouldnt just slam in reverse but maybe im wrong. Thank you for this awesome video too very helpful on slipper clutch.
The number one problem (at least on the traxxas forum) is using the slipper clutch to control wheelies instead of using throttle control.
What causes the friction pads on the slipper clutch to come apart and come out? This has happened twice on a new TMaxx 3.3 during the break in period. The second time it barely made it through a tank of fuel and it was not set too loose when it was installed.
What would cause the slipper clutch shaft to bend? My spur gear is wobbling, which in turn is causing my pinion gear to eat through my spur gears. I recently upgraded the motor in my fiesta st rally. About an hour after running it this happened.
Thanks for the video. I burned up my flywheel by a bad adjustment. 6s isn't a slipper clutch's best friend lol
I recently converted my 2wd slash into a monster slash using the proline trencher wheels. Does this effect the slipper clutch settings?
Can you use a traxxas slipper clutch system on an ecx torment for the purpose of using traxxas spur gears?
Bruh first i thought my grub screws and drive cups were rubbish because they kept on coming loose. When the car was new it used to wheelie on grass. Now it wheel spins a lot. I think the extra spinning has led to the drive cups and grub screw coming coming loose for no real reason when running the vehicle. Thanks for the video. Actually helped a lot because this problem has occurred over the last year now. When I first replaced the spur gear I measured the length of the nut to the gear, but since the buggy had been run quite a lot I think it was looser than it should have been. After that replacement the buggy never drove that well. Again, much appreciated 👍👍
Also I’ve been in the hobby since I was 9, now I’m 16. And tbh this is one area of the hobby I’ve never really studied and understood the importance of. Glad I found your video. You got a like and sub from me 😁
One other thing. My lock nut was measured about 5.5cm away from the spur gear. Maybe that was abit too loose now thinking about it 😳😬
Now no one goes into his shop because this video was so good
hey there, i think this also has to do with my slipper clutch, but im not sure... My car made a weird noise so i opened it and around te screws, a part of the motor and the lockbolt on the slipper clutch were covered in metal dust. i cleaned it off and made it ready to run again. did i tighten it up to much maybe? or is there something else i should watch out for?
That hoodie is dope af where do you get it? Nice vid btw it was helpful
I have a Traxxas Rustler VXL 2wd and I put much larger tires and rims on it and it sounds just like its to loose and it burned out my slippery clutch so I need to replace it and I will adjust like you said on the tighter side but do you think I could mess up anything by running the set of larger tires? I put larger tires all the way around on the front and back so it looks like it's 4wd but it's not.
Nice video man do you happen to know what year the Traxxas rustler is you have in this video. I have the same exact one and it like new condition. I'm thinking early 2000s or 2005
I have one wheel spinning and the otherw doesnt spin, i can hear a subtle grinding in the gear box, the diff appears fine but clicks when i spin it by hand, im guessing the diff is bad? Thanks
Much appreciated video thank you
RC Overloard I own a Losi High Roller and the clutch does not have the little magnets inside, is this a different clutch? It only has two discs on each side of the spur gear, also the motor is brushed and the shaft of the motor moves from side to side if I do it by hand maybe 3 millimeters, is this normal? If so, how do I set the motor with the spur gear with all that movement?
Hi I have an Evader brushless and the gear box / transmission is blown. From what found is they don’t make specific parts for this model. Can I find after market parts to use to rebuild or is it time for a new rc car?
On the traxxas Page the say a half turn is the recommended setting?
Is 1 turn away enough on a rustler with the castle sw4 5700kv?
i took apart my transmission and the rod that holds the plastic gear wiggles and ive had it set fully tight not knowing that could hurt it what do i do
Mine just moves freely? 3rd tank breaking in revo 3.3 nitro now it doesn't even move the truck when trying to put throttling on nothing happens but the black gear I can spin it both ways any ideal?
What about holding both rear tires and giving throttle with the expectation of the front wheels coming off the ground about 3 inches? If not, why?
Can you tell me how to tight the rustler 4x4 slipper clutch? thanks
How do i get my rustler to stop doing back flips at high speed. Is wind getting under the body that flips it? thanks
Thank you for the video. Thank you for edumacating my noob butt!! Cheers
Sometimes my Traxxas E Revo fails to move from a complete stop. It makes a sound as if it is struggling to move or does it mean the battery is about to die?
What would it be if one wheel is spinning faster than the other wheels on a traxxas rustler please help thank you
Does this apply to my 2002 Nissan Xterra?
yes.....lol
