      We tend to forget the basics over time with all this new technology these days. But it’s crazy how much can be accomplished if we slow down and learn our cars. These old systems weren’t really that bad and have several work arounds that still work today.

    EEC3. The dealer had a diagnostic machine called the SBDS. It was the size of an arcade game, like the one you put quarters in. The veteran taught me exactly the same things, back in the late 90's, a DVOM, and dial back timing light.
    .51 to .99 was acceptable tps voltage. Occasionally a dead spot in egr valve position sensor would cause an errant high idle too, we would nick a little off the sensor pintle on the grinder and let it relearn.

    Excellent distribution of knowledge. The earlier Fox's were a nightmare to get the idle to act right. I've got about 1,300$ in tune now and my car (heavily modified) will sometimes fall on it's face when I'm on the highway and take an exit. I downshift and use the brakes. It dies here quite often. I'll try your wisdom and I hope it acts right!

    Do you have a video on part throttle cruise jumping or bucking? No check light now after sending computer off and fixing few other items related to codes.

The way Andrew's idles when you first adjusted it on the throttle body at 2:26 is exactly what mine does right now, especially during coldstarts (and that's AFTER it spends about two minutes bucking like it wants to shut off). All of this information is really helpful!

  • @dennislacy5105

    It’s a very important point that with an aftermarket cam the idle speed must be raised above factory. How much is necessary will depend on how aggressive the cam is. Years ago my best friend and I straightened out the idle on countless modified Mustangs that we met around town. The common denominator was that the owner/builder was trying to idle the engine too low and they had the usual surging idle. Up and down, up and down. What few people realize is that when you try to idle a more aggressive camshaft too low is that it creates “intake reversion” which is a reverse pulse through the intake tract all the way out to the air filter. This is because more aggressive cams have more valve overlap, the amount of time both valves are open at the same time as the exhaust stroke is ending and the intake stroke is simultaneously beginning. Imagine a situation where your MAF is reading incoming air one moment then suddenly not the next moment like someone turning a light switch on and off rapidly and continuously. So one moment the computer is seeing air flow from the MAF then it’s not. The computers reaction is to raise and lower the ignition timing to match and that is where you get the surging idle. Sometimes the surging is consistent and other times it’s a runaway situation where the difference between high and low grows wider and wider to the point where the low is so low the engine stalls. If you put a timing light on while the surging is happening you can watch it shoot up and down, up and down, up and down. All these people would put those goofy adjustable spacers under the IAC when the surging idle has nothing to do with the IAC. It’s all because the ignition timing is going advance then retard because of intake reversion. You have to increase the idle speed enough to get passed the reversion to where you’re getting a consistent, continuous intake reading from the MAF and then like magic the engine will idle steadily. We typically found 850-950rpm to be the happy range depending on the cam used. All these people thought we were magicians when in reality we just understood how a more aggressive cam changes the dynamics of an engine. Intake reversion can also play hell with idle stability on carbureted engines.

I am curious though, if I connect the IAC while the engine is running, will shutting it down and restarting it do the same thing, or does it need to be disconnected when it is shut down? Also, my car seems to be running really rich. I am running a basically stock rebuilt 1986 HO with an A9P (automatic) in my 1967 Galaxie 500. The only mods I have from the Mustang are long tube headers and the smog pump and cats removed. It seems to run great, but really rich. Any help would be appreciated.

    When doing a base idle reset you really need to unplug the tps, iac and spout connector. Set the idle screw to where the engine is barely idling around 400-500 rpm. Then plug everything back in. The reason you need to unplug everything is because all of those things will try to correct the idle as you turn the idle screw off they are plugged in.

    Hey, thank you for the video. I replace the engine and basically everything. Recently put a new throttle body on followed this video. Idle is pretty good but took it out for a rip got home and the idle bogged down and the car died, I started it gave it a rev and it the idle caught itself. Does this sound like the computer is just re learning everything?

    Love the way Andrews Tires look. I have similar Eagle 4 bolt rims and want that exact look. What size are Andrews tires front and back and has he removed or flipped his quad shocks?

    What would cause it to surge at idle?

    • @BREW2LFOXBODY
      @BREW2LFOXBODY  3 года назад +1

      Typically timing or throttle adjustment is what I’ve seen cause surging over the years. But other factors could also be causing issues as well. Bad sensors or IAC motor

    I’ve done the base idle but hot start is💩 with surging that sometimes kills the engine. It was suggested that I start the car with the alternator disconnected and see. Unplugged the alternator and it starts right up and idles like BUTTER! Plugged it back in… surging! Alternator or wiring? Opinions please and thank you!
