No, sorry I didn’t explain that the best I guess. If the balancer has spun you just won’t be able to get an accurate timing reading. Because of that if you try to set the timing with it being spun there is a good chance you’ll be off your mark causing the car to possibly run bad. The main issue with a balancer that has slipped is the fact of it causing an imbalance in the engine, prematurely wearing main bearings.
The TPS coverage was a different angle from previous videos yet a bit more understanding. Now I comprehend, if you get a new TB and your car does not like it right away, you have to play with the voltage. Keep it coming bro, we listening!
I sure do appreciate it.. thank you!! Got ripped off when I was a kid with my 85 now I do everything myself my 89 is built by me, from vids you and other create 🤘
I did the same exact thing. I had to look at the date when this video first started. I have always loved the Stranger Things intro. My wife would be in the other room when I first subscribed to Brew2L, and I'd turn up the volume on his intro. I said this guy on this Mustang channel has the Stranger Things theme in his intro. She thought that was pretty cool.
Great video. Leech has me convinced the tps voltage thing isn’t as important. He shows in the programming that the computer expects a range of like .5- 1.25, or something. Anything in that range should function fine. Not tested it personally, but the numbers in the programming are compelling.
I had two stock balancers slip within a year. I switched to one that has a lock ring on the front that captures the outside ring and it’s been mint ever since. Romac and Powerbond make models like that imo one of the best upgrades you can make.
Changing from 10 to 14 will definitely wake the throttle response up. Night and day difference. Back to the basics, very nice. Even had the intro back👏
This channel for me has become church LOL thanks so much for all the content, Install the 130 amp alternator last night and new radiator flushing the system out later and will be attempting base idle reset this weekend wish me luck!
i have a stocker with goodies..4 years ago i shoved it up to 14 degree then set the tps..started screaming power..left it there 4 years lata no problems woot!!!!!
Hey, went over to a buddy who is working on his new Windsor, he has a "bolt" he screwed into the spark plug hole. You turn the motor until it stops and mark the damper, then turn it all the way back till hit stops. The point in between is real top dead center, and you can do it to verify your pointer is correct and balancer as well. You ever used on of those?
Great video. I rub chalk on the balancer to see the numbers better. An old truck my father in law taught me. My timing on my 85 is also 14 degrees runs great like that. My original 4180 carb is acting up though.
10 degrees is supposed to be stock. I ran my GT at 13 for years with no issues - where it sits now still. My LX is at 14 and it seems to like it there, I figured why not. Supposedly every 1 degree you add is worth about 5 HP. As for marking the balancer, what worked best for me was white paint line on the edge of the pointer and white paint marking on 10 and my desired timing mark. Perfect view of what I needed to see with the timing light.
You have impeccable timing btw, no pun intended. I swear my car has gremlins or dementia. One day it’s dialed in, then three days later it’s like I never set it up! I had to go through the whole process again. Thanks for the video!
Dude I went through the saaame thing🙏Just don’t let ransoms fiddle with er.My 86 gt is predominately stock.Found someone that help build these cars and shook all those gremlins out🙂
Just replaced the thermostat on my '89 LX. Filled it up with antifreeze/water, and it pours out of "somewhere"all over my driveway. Replace the water pump, and it turns out the radiator is plugged. Replace the radiator... all is well. For now. 😆
My fox anytime it rains won’t idle on its own till it warms up and it runs extremely rich till it’s warm and the exhaust even sounds different, I’ve replaced iac, maf, tps, egr, air temp and water temp sensors, and the car didn’t have any codes when I put the reader on it, any ideas what it could be?
I bought a foxbody a few weeks ago with the heater core bad, I still wana drive it but damn theres no semi warm days in Pittsburgh and its a lil to cold in the car
I have a fair good 1 for you...lots of people say...I cant afford them big bunch of tools to fix a car..I always say you dont need a big tool box..it normally takes about 10 tools to fix your car.almost every nut and bolt is almost the same size over and over again like 1/4 or a 9/16 or a 10 and a 15 and a star or hex...etc etc..not very many tools needed.
@BREW2L My fuel pump on my 89 stopped working when I changed the wiring harness because I did a motor swap out of a 93 and changed the harness to a 93 harness but I get power to the driver seat then no farther back what could that be ??
Early uploads 😃. On the holley it controls timing with the dual sync. I checked timing at idle and at 3500 rpm setting the static timing on the laptop and did my best to check with a cheap China/ jegs timing light.
The PCV sucking in oil blowby vapor is what causes carbon buildup on the back of the valves and in the chambers. How about the PCV not sucking in vapor? Either by using filtered clean air .....or blocking off which probably needs a mixture tune recalibration.??

love your films, Brew- very informative and simple for us to understand. Gotta a question: start my fox, runs great for two blocks, then hesitates, bucks, all for about 30 or 40 seconds, (rough idle) then the computer or microprocessor adjusts it and it runs fine. Does it every time for both cold or hot start. 88 Fox 5.0, stock, auto trans. Thanks- been on boards; but wanted your opinion, thanks again.
First my car runs great. I just want to get your thoughts on my idle. When cold my idle is nice about 800 maybe. Once warmed up it idles 1100. Feels a little high to me but still smooth and consistent.
Thanks for the advice and the great channel. I have owned my 93 coupe since new and your channel (as well as foxcast and a couple of others) has given me a renewed interest in my ride.
Looking to buy an 89 swapped with a 5.0. Won't idle but it'll run. Hopefully it's this easy. The amount the guy wants is crazy low cuz he needs it gone and I'm up first for the buy...don't know if I wanna pull the trigger or not tho
So I think I have an issue with my distributor. I think that it could be going bad. I would say the most prominent symptom is that the motor clears up under hard acceleration but at idle and low cruising spring The car bucks misfires and just runs like pure shit. I have checked and replaced all the usual suspects… Could this be a distributor?
Hey I always watch your videos all the time and I am a subscriber I had a couple of questions my first question is the timing light that you have I have the same one I’m pretty sure you got it from Harbor freight when you sent your timing do you use the dial at all and if you do or don’t where do you set it at question number 2 when I try to set my timing I take out the plug out of the spout and then I would get it to 10° but my timing keeps bouncing around and then when I put the chip back into the spout it shoots up to 20° after top dead center I don’t know what could that be but I checked the TPS it’s at 98 and the idle speed is at under 1000 RPM I forgot to mention this the car is a 1986 GT bone stock
Your GT sounds like it should be running fine. Maybe try 14 degrees instead of 10. If the timing keeps jumping up and down try idling up just a little and recheck. Hope that helps.
So yesterday I threw on a O/R X-pipe. Everything is running great and seems smooth. Loud as hell now. Especially with the dumps I have on. It's very bassy in the car. Anyway, I noticed the car is idling higher than it did. I had it set pretty perfect around 650-750 rpms. Now it idles at about 800-900. I checked TPS and timing. Timing is 12 degrees and tps was .97 any ideas? Should I just adjust the idle set screw?
Is the timing problem on 4 cylinders? I’m getting a 90 lx hatch and I wanted to know if it also a problem on it. I plan on making my engine like the SVO
Hey man! Been starting to watch your vids and they have all been very helpful. I just got my first fox 2 weeks ago from a buddy that gave it to me. It’s having some idling issues. While idling the rpm bounces slightly up and down. Then when I accelerate it bogs a little before being able to go up all the way to higher rpms. I was wondering what are some of the big things I should be checking for this issue? Also it’s killing my battery if I leave it connected when the car is off! Super weird also
@@mysticker11 the lil 2.8 just dont have enough heart!!! Id like to use the 302 with a carb setup! I have just about all the parts to do the swap, but the time and $$$ 😆😆! After workin 10hr days it makes it tough to get out there!!!
Good information. Timing can completely change a dog engine. BTW does base timing affect the injector pulse signal (does it come from the distributor)?
Could the balancer slipping cause the car to feel like it’s down on power ?
No, sorry I didn’t explain that the best I guess. If the balancer has spun you just won’t be able to get an accurate timing reading. Because of that if you try to set the timing with it being spun there is a good chance you’ll be off your mark causing the car to possibly run bad.
