Been playing with 5.0’s for 30 years……had no idea about the 5v timing thing. Thanks a bunch for sharing On the plus side looks you’re running Fel-Pro 9333 gaskets. Great gasket for supercharged setups as it seals very well but will let go if the motor rattles. Always better to blow a gasket than the hard parts (pistons, etc)
Hey BREW2L, I know I'm a broken record; The ECT could save your engine as well. It plays a huge factor in the timing with these cars because it tells the ECU what temperature your engine is at which if it fails cold you will be out there giving it the beans and things like this could happen. I don't know if you've ever changed yours out but it's a cheap part to do before tuning. Back in the day when I had my coupe, I went through so many throttle bodies and TPS sensors chasing the demons in my car. One day was like I'm just going to do basic maintenance on this part and damn it fixed all my issues. Had a great setup and all but a stupid $15 sensor caused me so much headache and money
This is good to know. I've had my 89 for a couple of months now and making some tweaks and changing vacuum lines. Fuel tank had rust so I replaced it and the pump. Also found some debris in the injectors.
Great vid, and props to you for openly admitting a mistake. Too many guys fake it for YT and that really hurts guys that are learning. Another killer vid, thanks brother I’ve got a retro fox tribute build going myself. 😎
I had the same issue a month ago, I was doing some pulls with my turbocharged fox running 6 psi only And I started to hear that rattling noise in 3rd gear, and I thought something is not good. So my car shuted off, of all the sudden, and had to tow it home And when I was inspecting it, I realized it was mixing oil with water. Decided to remove Al the spark plugs and 6 of them had water. I thought the engine was not good anymore but now that I saw the information you said, it makes sense of what happened to my engine. Thanks a lot Brewl2l

Thanks for the video, I will check that!!! Now 414rwhp 395rwtq. 434rwhp on a mild tune with methanol injection.

Any idea if Matt is going to be posting some videos of your tuning on his channel? That would be cool to see what he finds from his side on your build!
Once again this is why i coyote swapped. You can go through a9l, quarterhorse, pro m etc but you still have the trash pip sensor, salt pepper shakers, tps, iac… no thanks. Every time i started the car it was always something. Carb or New Harness is my answer
So are you still enjoying the tps based eec-iv? Not to sound cocky but i've had so many problems with the speed density on my 93 f150 5.0 from 1800rpm idle, dies at idle, detonation, and running extremely rich, replaced sensors checked everything but intermitent problems are a bitch. Now im running a map/vacuum based megasquirt 3 for about a year and coudn't be happier, and found the problem was in the sensor ground on the harness i've yet to fix it right but the jumper wire is working fine. Now even though the detonation killed the rings and it has a ton of blowby i've unhooked the tube from the valve cover to the air box because the air filter was dripping oil but it still runs better than it ever did before and gets 1.25 avg better mpg. So i'm getting ready to drop in a rebuilt 351 and 4r70w with all new holley harness for sequental injectors and individual coils with russ proteous ecu. But i wish you the best with the EEC-IV!
I just put headgaskets on my on3 turbo 89 lx and I had it dyno tuned. Crazy is the car idles like crap and even the tuner said no matter what I did with the tune I can't get it to idle so I changed my IAC valve and It got worse so I'm starting to think it's my tps maybe? It makes me not even want to drive the car because you let off the gas it dies or surges and dies .
Surprised it didn’t trip a code. I always like to retard my supercharged timing to boost, which is an overlay to the stock computer like in an MSD BTM I discuss in one of my videos. Always need to know your max boost WOT timing.
Do you have arp head studs? I’m getting ready to do head gaskets on a car I’m just selling and trying to decide if I have to do new studs and if I should go ahead and flip the bill for ARP.
I was always curious to what would happen if the tps went over 5 volts. Now i know. I always assumed 5 volts was out of the range for it to read and it simply wouldnt read your throttle at all.
Initially it will default back to 1.25v reading, and if the vehicle is moving, that will immediately trigger a decel condition where the ignition timing is fixed.
@@BREW2LFOXBODY the car would idle down with the a/c on. The compressor would turn on and off, and the car would run like crap. Just changing the sensor out to a brand new motorcraft unit fixed all of these issues. Compressor stays on and idle doesn’t dip at all when the ac comes on
The vref pin is the reference voltage signal from the computer...it "should" never be more than 5v...I would surmise that either you have a short somewhere in the harness, or somehow the computer output > 5v. Which, I suppose is possible, those computers are freaking ancient by today's standards...electronic components do wear out, contrary to popular belief....you might want to pop open the computer again and make sure one of the capacitors hasn't shit the bed (very common on old EEC-IVs) and possibly creating a short that allowed the vref to go > 5v.
Because the aftermarket sensors are slotted to permit some level of adjustability. It is certainly possible to get the sensor out of its optimal range. Once the car was back together, he just had to loosen the screw and back off the sensor a touch and the voltage dropped right back down as it shows in the video when he did the voltage test.
@@BREW2LFOXBODY ah, gotcha...the OVER thing threw me for a loop :) ....I suppose the programming isn't expecting a true 5v to mean you're still in WOT...that's a poor assumption by the original programmers!
Have you made your TPS adjustable? I have found that even new TPS's out of the box are not all the same at base idle. I fixed this on mine and was able to dial it in by doing this.
Same thing just happened to me 2 nights ago, was on my way to pick up my truck from having th ac evac'd, so i can replace a line on that, and like halfway to the place noticed the car was running a line over normal temp on the stock gauge, at first i thought it was just a bad thermostat, let it cool down, topped of the rad with water, but then on my way home it started missing real bad, never overheated again on the way back home. But sure as shit, started it up first thing the next morning with the rad cap off and boom coolant everywhere! Only thing i can figure is my fuel pressure guage is shit, and in turn i may have adjusted the fuel pressure too high, dont know if thats possible, but the fpr was literally the only thing changed like an hr before the head gasket went. From the stock one back to an aeromotive i had to fix a leak on. But im gonna check the tps voltage too before teardown, for shits n gigs.
@@BREW2LFOXBODY it sure does buddy! Im kinda thinking the same thing too, but i do know it was running lean for at least a day or 2 before i noticed the fpr was leaking. Gonna go with the race gaskets this time, see if theyll hold up better, gonna have the heads pressure tested to just to be safe. But your sure right about anything being possible lol, just glad it only was driven a few miles after it happened.
@@BREW2LFOXBODY ya it was running lean for at least 2-3 days before i realized the reg was leaking, no evap canisters on the car so slight gas smell from engine bay wasnt immediately alarming. But after a fill up, the smell got real bad and said something aint right lol, saw it leaking out the side port ran the stock fpr for like 2 days, til i had time to clean up and fix the aero one.
I ran p heads on my 88gt. Kept blowing head gaskets. Block was checked heads were milled. Changed to different set of p heads same thing. I always ran my tps @.92/93 resistance. I now wonder if the tps was spiking. LOOKING FOR A 82 TTOP COUPE ROLLER OR COMPLETE CAR. ANYONE KNOW OF ONE?
I would never run an EEC-IV of any kind for a supercharged car, nitrous car, or a weed eater. He already has a Term and a Megasquirt, how he didn't learn his lesson is beyond me.
I see a lot of people going back to stock computers lately all due to idle issues and what not with say a terminator x. However stupid crap like this that ford did keeps me away from stock. I’ll tune and tune and tune my idle forever as long as I avoid errors like this because of stock ecu setup. Has holley gotten their setup 100% plug and play, no. However I still think is far superior over stock units.
He was already governor and that proved to be too much!! Haha I have the Terminator X waiting to be put in. Already have a chip and just want more programmability and safety net when the turbo goes on.
any idea why my 91 kinda breaks up till 3500? after 3500 its like its a whole new car lol. deleted all the emissions and calibrated all the sensors and timing, new plugs and wires gapped at .50. kinda thinking the distributor or my plug gap is too high. gonna figure it out in the spring any advice would be appreciated. 91 lincoln mark 7 aod
Could very much depend on the rpm you leave from if it's a roll. Or the driver if it's a dig. Turbo cars have so much TQ down low that they may either have traction issues at launch, or a great head start if it can hook. My buddy has a turbo and I have a Vortech. He has over 100 ft lbs advantage at 3k rpms. We even out up top, but a centrifugal can't claim the same low and midrange numbers.
I use cometic gaskets on the turbo car. It’s all a matter of opinion honestly. Some people like the head gaskets to be the weak link in case something happens like the TPS deal. Others just want maximum sealing capability.
That’s what I’ve been looking at. Some cometic mls.. just figured I’d get your opinion and see what you’ve had good luck with. I appreciate you replying man! Love the channel. Keep rockin with it bro 💯💪🏼🤘🏼

Damn that sucks brother! I doubt the fuel pressure played a big role but I’m finding out anything is possible….
@@nunya2814 oh I didn’t realize it was running lean… yeah that could have definitely been a problem
@@nunya2814 Maybe that was the problem. Be nice to know for sure. How did the plugs look? Other than being wet of course lol
Wow just checked mine.. .98 at rest and 4.60 wot. I recently popped a head gasket on my car so this let's me know it was something else.
Nice! Glad you checked it. At least now you know 👌
Would the TPS setup change any for an AUTOMATIC car?
What was the fix for the 5 amp reading?
Paper gasket on a boosted engine ?
Hey bud did you get rid of the lightning?
Mine run hot and busted the heater core after bumping the timing up to 14
I would never run an EEC-IV of any kind for a supercharged car, nitrous car, or a weed eater. He already has a Term and a Megasquirt, how he didn't learn his lesson is beyond me.
This is key on? I'm getting 4.9 V with the throttle closed on a new tps. I'm not sure how I'm getting that!
Whats Mats channel?
Leech Motorsports
Right here
Not sure how it would go over 5v when your supply shouldn't be over 5v?
5 volts is the trigger for the issue . I just worded it wrong I guess.
Terminator x would have protected you, terminator for PRESIDENT
He was already governor and that proved to be too much!! Haha
I have the Terminator X waiting to be put in. Already have a chip and just want more programmability and safety net when the turbo goes on.
Hey brew2l. I probably missed this in a different video but what trans is in that fox?
Stock t5
@@BREW2LFOXBODY thank you for the reply. I appreciate it! Have a great night!
Thanks bud 😎
How did you not check tps you always do
any idea why my 91 kinda breaks up till 3500? after 3500 its like its a whole new car lol. deleted all the emissions and calibrated all the sensors and timing, new plugs and wires gapped at .50. kinda thinking the distributor or my plug gap is too high. gonna figure it out in the spring any advice would be appreciated. 91 lincoln mark 7 aod
If the balencer on a pushrod 5.0 slips, you got real problems. Sheared keyway or some shit
The outer ring can slip around the rubber cushion
@@BREW2LFOXBODY you have a point 👉
Just to clarify for myself. You set the tps at closed throttle correct??
Yes, then check voltage as well at WOT just to ensure it’s not at 5v
Retro vs Calypso supercharged vs turbo once you get it dialed in.
Can’t wait for that one ☝️
Could very much depend on the rpm you leave from if it's a roll. Or the driver if it's a dig. Turbo cars have so much TQ down low that they may either have traction issues at launch, or a great head start if it can hook.
My buddy has a turbo and I have a Vortech. He has over 100 ft lbs advantage at 3k rpms. We even out up top, but a centrifugal can't claim the same low and midrange numbers.
It’s definitely going to be interesting 🤔
@@BREW2LFOXBODY just let Andrew drive the one that you don't want to win 😁
Only teasing because his black car was a C4.
I was gonna say that actually 🤣🤣🤷♂️
Please get some Torque boxes in that thing. That boosted power will destroy them
Sorry man...
It’s all good! We got it done and learned something in the process
Time for some mickeys on the back . She was side steppin
It actually has drag radials on it.
Dam mine hooks pretty hard
Great channel by the way I really enjoy your videos
Which head gaskets did you use?? 🔧🔧🔧
9333’s
Do you use the same ones on your turbo car? I’m currently putting aluminum heads on my turbo fox and looking for the “best” ones to use
