  • Back in 2015 and 2016, as part of Adidas' 'Backed By Messi' campaign, the six-time Ballon d'Or winner, then of FC Barcelona, picked out ten players who he felt could go on to dominate world football.
From Manchester United forward James Wilson to Chelsea star Timo Werner, HITC Sevens takes a look at those 20 footballers and sees where they are now.

@@lorenzomartinez8543 Additionally: It becomes very obvious that companies can survive without having the necessary cash for their daily operations JUST because others WANT to do business with you.
Barca is such a huge club, people still stand in line to play for them. Lewandowski has the better team and ability to win internationally at Bayern. His yearly paycheck of ~20 million is most likely not met in Barcelona too.
He still striked himself to Barca.
People desperately want the club to survive, including banks and business partners outside of football. Sure, they wanna earn money too but surprisingly that's not the first and foremost goal rn. Everyone banks on the possibility of Barca actually reducing their debtflow (the money that actually goes out every months to repay) and somewhat keeping the sporting side together.

It's not that complicated. It's like selling a part of future income, so they can buy players now. They are still very much in debt and they will earn less in the future because they sold a part of it.

Accursio Bentivegna my god what a blast from the past. I can’t believe that in 2015 that Palermo team had the likes of Belotti and Bentivegna seemed like the future of Sicilian football. If I remember correctly I think Beppe Iachini was the coach most of that season. I watched a lot of Palermo games then, can’t imagine what my reaction would’ve been to hear that since then, the club has gone bankrupt, ceased to exist, been refounded in Serie D and worked their way back up to Serie B (so far), Maurizio Zamparini has passed away, AND the club is now officially part of City Football Group. A lot can happen in this game in 7 years.

On Zardes - LA Galaxy kinda torpedoed his career after his breakout season by shifting him to the wing and even to fullback for a bit. When Columbus got him they moved him back up top and low and behold he delivered.
Despite them being the most famous team in the league, Galaxy is one of the biggest jokes in the league at this stage and an inability to develop players is a big part of it.
Shelton on the other hand....woof. BAD miss. The guy isn't good at...anything. SKC's starting striker (Alan Pulido) had a surgery in the offseason that ruled him out for the entire season and Shelton has looked DISMAL in his stead. Muyl's a passable MLS squad player, but as a Philadelphia Union supporter I will only remember him for putting his penalty in the playoffs against us last season in the Delaware River (when Nashville managed to go 0 for 4 on the shootout)

As a resident of Oregon for over a decade, and has seen and played with guys from Oregon State U, it is actually astonishing that they thought Messi watching some guy from here would be believable💀😂 OSU is one of the most overhyped Division 1 teams out there, a lot of D1 schools are actually. If you ever actually watch the football, it's alright at the best of times, and snooze worthy at the worst. It's a testament to the main issue of football culture in the US. Here talent is somehow still considered surplus to requirements, coaches and scouts in the states don't care if players are good, they care if they look the part sadly🤦‍♂️ They look for guys who are built like CR7 and Varane, and think they'll just teach the guy to not have the reactions of a dead cat and 1st touch of an elephant. Case in point, when was the last successful USA player who came out of a college here...? Nobody. The US wants guys who LOOK like theyd be world beater athletes who in reality, just like Shelton, would get made to look a clown against even the Barca u14 team. Pulisic, Adams, Mckennie, Reyna, all of them weren't brought up on American style football, and thats why they're as good as they are now.

Obviously... this seems like a case in which someone made the list and then slapped Messi's name on it to give it some credibility. As if Messi would know who most of these are...

yea there is no earthly way Lionel Messi was able to watch OSU Beavers games. even though i live in Seattle, i would have no idea how to watch PAC-12 mens soccer on TV. this is despite University of Washington (based in Seattle) making it to the Division 1A mens soccer national championship last season, so that goes to show how unlikely it is that Messi had ever watched Khiri Shelton at OSU. finally, any American who follows soccer closely would know that stars of the league are rarely ever found in the MLS draft. the best you can reasonably hope for is a reliable squad player that is coachable and a good teammate.

I had high hopes for James Wilson lol a left footed forward with an eye for goals. Such a shame he squandered his chance. i still remember what Warren Joyce says about the behaviour of young players like Januzaj and Wilson once they break into the first team.

From a Club that has beaten Borussia Dortmund, Twente, Derby County and many others to a club that was forced from their own stadium, reduced to nothing during the Bosnian War, becoming a mediocre top-level team in the 00s to nearly being forced into folding in 2016 to its amazing comeback to European competitions in 2021 seeing the early exit of Greek giants AEK Athens in a sensational win in Athens!

Shelton plays for my local team and while I’m not a professional footballer, I can confirm he is not very good. Again I’m not a professional so I can’t really speak on his skill level, but yeah we as a fan base are more than annoyed by his lack of goals.

I almost slapped myself when I heard the name Khiry Shelton. Sporting are stuck with him at striker, since their starting striker is out for the season. During his career, he's had 8 goals in 87 appearances. Christ.
