- From former Wolfsburg sensation and Bundesliga top scorer Grafite to retired Premier League stalwart and USMNT legend Clint Dempsey, HITC Sevens takes a look at a number of players who had just one season of world class form within altogether much more mundane careers.

That Grafite goal against Bayern is one of the most impressive solo goals in my opinion.
My favorite TOP 5 goals ever. The best one being Ibrahimovic against Italy, also due to minute and importance :)
I watched that game live and I couldn't believe my eyes
Okocha Against Bayern ;) check it bruv
@@therealgiannis3117 That goal against Oilver Kahn was dope as hell as well.
Sadly it was
Honourable mention: Papiss Demba Cisse's half season for Newcastle in 2012 where he scored 13 in 14 games, including an absolutely world-class brace away at Stamford Bridge.
Not really because he had great seasons in Germany and Turkey also
@@foxxyyairo True, he did have one standout season in the Bundesliga with Freiburg with 22 goals in 32 appearances.
Sounders legend Clint Dempsey. Seattle will be eternally proud of you
Always!!
Are you talking about Alfie or Dempsey?
Is Raul Ruidiaz better though?
Deuce had the better overall career, but I think Raul's time with Seattle has been astonishing, even despite not being part of the teams that won the shield or the first MLS Cup. The dude shows up in the playoffs like no one else ever has, and he's been the heart of the attack alongside Lodeiro ever since he was signed.
A little city named Nacogdoches is forever proud of our boy Deuce
But Dempsey always had a consistent goal record. Did well internationally and looked good in major tournaments
Exactly, ridiculous video
“World class”
Salty plebs
@@Vecindad467 I think Rory is making the point that Dempsey was not an average player ergo shouldn’t be on this list to begin with.
Should have put Demba Ba instead of Dempsey
@@Vincentdeoliveira "I am not saying that these players were average" did you not watch the video?
Paulinho? Came from China to Barça for a season and did really well even bossing Classico’s.. then went right back to China for I believe a profit..
Paulinho played well in China and had more than 50 caps for Brazil so he definitely had more than 1 good season
@@ishaanmattoo9732 fair enough.. I didn’t really follow his career before or after his stint at Barça.. all I knew is he didn’t do well with Spurs and was surprisingly good for us..
he filled the list with forwards
@@ryansmith-jr4gn He was present at the team that beat Chelsea at the CWC and hr was on the field for most of Brasil's 2013 Confederations Cup victory. He was World Class way before he went to Totteham and continue with a good spell of form at China and Barça.
He was the starting midfielder for Brazil in the 2013 confederations cup man... bossed spain and italy's midfield that tournament. He was amazing in 2012-2013, had problems from 2014-2016 but was again amazing since then. Definitely not the player to be put in this video
Feel like Antony Modeste is in with a shout here. Scored 25 league goals for Köln in 2016/17, got them to 5th in a season where the entire team scored just 51. Then he jumped to China and returned in (dis) grace?
Antony Modeste was something else that season!!!
@@priyanshupradyot absolutely
@@iskywhisky1154 Anthony Modeste is doing quite well right now... 6 goals in 9 appearances in the Bundesliga for Cologne this season so far.
Not great at Blackburn prior to that, adding weight to the fact that he was probably worth a mention
Modeste was, is and always will be an awesome player
I wouldn't call dempsey average overall. he had a few pretty above average seasons in his career.
also grafite is a true legend. he was even better than prime dzeko when the world was taken by storm by the latter. incredible
I was just about to write pretty much, this. Dammit Frank! 😅
True, but I don't think he ever had a world class season. Yeah, he scored many goals that year, but he played in a very similar level for a few years, inclunding that season, a very decent player, but never world class.
this. becoming your country's joint all-time top scorer like Dempsey gives him well above-average career accomplishment in my book
@@nicolasaldape3286 this maybe come across as dismissive and I’m sorry if it does….. but it kind of depends what country
@@jamesshanton1456 57 goals and 21 assists is pretty impressive for most countries imo
Can you do a documentary on the afc Wimbledon on the nine promotions in eleven years, how they’re a fan own club and how they have a stadium in plough lane now.
One of the best stories in football
Their all time great: ruclips.net/video/xLuaqNoxjro/видео.html

@@seeds4life999 thanks Scott, I think a HITC sevens Alfie documentary on this would be good
His team hull city played AFC Wimbledon last season
It's a great story ut it feels like more of a Tifo video to me. The hitc video would be 7 footballers who got Wimbledon promoted.
I still remember that "Kevin Phillips" season when I was a kid. Dude was sooo lethal that I thought England have found their next Shearer. Unfortunately, it didn't work for him afterwards. Massive achievement regardless, and one of the first names I remember when I think of that era ⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽
Good old days😀
Congrats on your first 1K. Massive fan♥️
I remember waking up early to watch match of the day just to see his goal against Chelsea again back in them days highlights weren't ready available on TV as they are now yh the good old days
@@jeremybilliards712 Thank you sir :))
@@qasimdin7438 ohhh those were the days :))
Nuri Sahin 2010-2011. World class in midfield that season for Dortmund, basically won them the league, absolutely bossed the league and dominated Bayern in their matches... Then left for Real Madrid at the end of that season and never returned to anything even remotely close to that form.
I think Dempsey was a 15 goal a year striker in the Prem in his prime. Which is basically what he averaged when he was healthy, starting most games, and actually being played as a striker...
Dempsey was an attacking midfielder or no10. He never played as a number 9.
Afonso Alves in the 2006-2007 season at Hereenveen where he scored 34 goals in 31 games.
Moved to Middlesbrough and done fuck all 🤣
the 9 goals in 1 match really improved his record that season. but yeah, the eredivisie isn't in the top 5 leagues which is why no one was surprised he flopped in england.
My Nan could have scored 30 goals in the Dutch league that season!
@@luisitoviii1090 casual
@@bimapriambada1098 20 years a "casual" :p
I'm a bad person for finding it hilarious that Marco Negri's transcendent season was halted not by an on-the-pitch injury, but a badminton accident.
I'm a fan of Victor Moses but he was world class in 2016/17, then turned average just like before
Moses is a good player in the 3-5-2 formation
True he looked like Cafu in his prime that year other years he looked like Cafu now
The streets will never forget Michu
With that celebration too
@@lxfj2128 1
Da streets what does that even mean 😅
He just a half season wonder. He decreased after February 2013.
Haven’t watched the video but I can smell Kevin Phillips’s appearance in this list
7:06 Fun fact: The German OneFootball channel described this as one of the darkest phases of the history of FC Bayern as the guys trying to stop him were Christian Lell, Andreas Ottl and a young guy named Breno (Who later got into prison for burning down his house. Should be noted that he was in a horrible mental place and I hope he does better now). The video was about the top 10 worst Bayern transfers and feature Lell while the other 2 were honorable mentions.
Those were the good years before it totally became the Bayern Liga. Now is so fucking boring.
@@ciudadano1995 you are a casual if you think the only watchable team in the Bundesliga is Bayern
@@fegismcclaren1632 the rest of the teams may have good things but they all are horrible defending. Not my kind of football kiddo.
@@ciudadano1995 calling other people "kiddo" shows big immaturity so you my guy are the only kiddo here
@@ciudadano1995 So you dont care about underdog clubs clinching a spot in Europe or the relegation play offs? If so you’ve never watched the Bundesliga albeit like any kind of league
I remember Paul Warhurst, a run of the mill defender/midfielder, being asked by Trevor Francis his manager at the time, to fill in as a temporary striker, he scored in twelve consecutive games and if not for suffering an injury, after being called into the England squad as a striker, would probably of made his international debut. From there, his career went back to being run of the mill.
Yh remember it well the 92-93 season.
Blackburn rovers?
Andy Carroll Scored Like 20 goals in half a season then joined Liverpool & the rest is history… :-
Charlie Adam was also a big move to Liverpool after a blinder of a season that didn't pan out.
and he was signed to replace torres XD
luckily for them, they signed suarez as back up.
Andy Carroll simply chose the wrong team to suit his strengths and hide his weaknesses. He is great in the air, that is all.
He didnt score 20 he scored like 10 goals
@lenntejas Yeah I remember, they probably needed a few more players in that style
I just looked up that Grafite goal and wow, you weren't kidding about the quality of the goal OR the Alan Partridge-esque commentary. Beautiful stuff.
Calls Dempsey average
USMNT fans: So you have chosen... death.
Every American player ever has been average at best
@@12345Yeah Now they began to produce some quite good ones.
@@12345Yeah Tim Howard?
@@lukepitts8529 average to decent. Nothing more
@@nandomdabit1807 saved 16 shots in a wc match and a better everton goalie than the current one so average 😂
Back when I'd regularly watch the USMNT, I loved Clint. I personally think he's the best male player to put on the shirt, back when our team had a little more bite and grit. Obviously, this crop of players are more technically gifted and possibly more talented, I think the last batch (Donovan, Clint, Howard, Beasley, etc) had more passion and fight in them. Not afraid to get scrappy with the Central American powerhouses, I think Klinnsman was better than Berhalther as well
Agree with everything you just said. I miss Dempsey and Donovan up top, Howard’s heroics, and Bradley dictating the tempo. It felt like with that generation they were just as passionate as the fans to play for the U.S
@@Football_Unlimited honestly, I think this group could be passionate with a proper manager and the USSF and MLS not getting in the way. It's a shame that Pulisic is made of glass, would have loved to see, fairly, how he could have been. Right now, I don't see any of the current boys getting back into the face of a Jamaican player, or the personality to grab a pair of sunglasses that at them from opposing fans.
@@christopherhicks8107 I don’t think any current player has the steel balls of Bradley lol dude was savage as fuck even in the most hostile environments like azteca
Very much co-sign on all of this. I loved Deuce's gunslinger ethos on the pitch and his competitive fire, beyond just his skills and knack for putting the ball in the net. Of course I like and have hopes for the current young crop of USMNT footballers; that said, watching some of the recent WC qualifying performances it's unavoidable to not miss the kind of grit and cojones we had from guys like Dempsey, Bradley, hell even Kyle Beckerman. Didn't matter if they were on the road at the Azteca or that bear pit in San Salvador, those guys didn't scare worth a damn.
You're comparing 25-30 year old professionals to a team full of 18-21 year olds. Have some patience, and stop telling everyone how you walked uphill both ways in your day.
The pronunciation of Guiza changed so many times in that one segment 😂
Just hoping that one of them was right, might as well hedge your bets.

I was reallyyy hoping you included Güiza. Not disappointed at all. Nice video mate 🔥
The disrespect to Dempsey. He carried that team and they've been a yoyo since 2 seasons after he left..
He wanted to rally up some Yankes. He needs views
@@captainyank138 probably Fulham fans too. It's sad watching what's going on with that club...
you mean Dempsey was a world class player the whole time he was a fulham?!
just because he was the best player there doesn't mean he was world class.
the video is about players who had from good to above average careers but had that one special season where they could be world beaters.
@@luisitoviii1090 who here called him world class
@@captainyank138 good point, but there was no disrespect to dempsey in this video, it's a fair assessment of his time in england.
Dempsey was a consistent Fantasy Football Double-Gameweek legend
Hadn’t seen that Grafite goal before this. Had to pause this, go and check it and come back. Was not disappointed.
Dempsey was always consistent in the PL wtf nahh disrespectful to the Fulham legend
8:40 "Fucking Schillaci..." My dad remembers the 1990 World Cup alright. 😂
Fucking Pat Bonner more like.
Dempsey when he finds himself on this list: "you don't know where I'm from, dawg" (if you know you know)
Clive Allen would be one of those. I went to a lot of Spurs games 1986-87 and he seemed to score in most of them. He ended up with 49 goals that season (just over 25% of his total career goals) incredible stuff.
When you got to the top 2 I was scared that you wouldn't mention Dani Guiza. That man is the "streets will never forget" archetype. I barely watched him play (I was like 9 during that season) but I will never forget him.
Stephen Ireland in 2008/09 would be another good shout.. Looked world class for about 6 months, then it was a steady decline from there.
Loved the introduction
"Useless Swede, Henrik Larsson." Lol
Grafite’s initially puskas winning goal is one of the greatest ever, and the story of him and Dzeko terrorising the Bundesliga is epic as well
7 highest/best PL free kick takers all time
One example that any fpl player might remember, John lundstram was so great for Sheffield United in 19/20 but then ever since has been average at best
Giakoumatic for VVV Venlo scoring 30 goals in a season for a team that went down the same season
Man, Salvatore Schillaci explosion in Italia90 is pound for pound legendary levels of inexplicable oddity.
I think Marek Mintal is another great example from Bundesliga who won the golden boot in his first bundesliga season in 04/05 with 1.FC Nürnberg, a club that just got promotet. His career was unfortunataly full of injuries after that so he might have had more outstanding seasons but He never managed to score more than 5 goals in a first division after that.
Dempsy and Grafite had the same number 23 when they had their best seasons, interesting, i might wear 23 for my school's football team
Feel like Clint Dempsey is a tad harsh. Solid output and consistent in front of goal.
I was expecting to see Marc Janko in this list. But Grafite was a pleasant surprise, AND YES GO WATCH THAT GOAL!
Ranking every premier league club’s most appearance makers
One should also mention Misomovic on that offensive triangle with the 2009 Wolfsburg squad... In all honesty: That entire squad had an insane over performance. Barzagli, Dzeko und Gentner are like the only ones that win something after or before that season.
Dempsey was consistently good especially towards the end of his career, he slowed down a bit and moved to the MLS but he dominated the league and was the best player on team USA up until the moment of his retirement.
Is it mean to say Dele Alli could feature in this list?
kinda. i think he has 3 memorable seasons at Tottenham, especially during Poch era
@@MullerFan28 Yeah fair, just comparing it to his 18 goal premier league season, not to say the other two aren't good tho
Day 10: Top 7 protest clubs (FC United of Manchester, AFC Liverpool).
Maybe take a peak at colo colo, the last 3 seasons have been crazy and I think it would be an interesting video. For a sample the positions at the end of the last two seasons and the current one are as follows: 2nd, 16th, 1st
I wonder if Diego Milito could be included here... he had a few good seasons, but his 2009-2010 season was absolutely unreal...
He maybe not a world class player every season, but he was above beyond average during his career
His stunt in Zaragoza and Genoa was impressive as well
Milito is far too good for this list
@@bimanatawilaga7509 He is also considered a legend in Racing Club because he was part of the team that won the first division after a long time
He was injury prone that's why , otherwise he was great , even scored 3 goals against Real .
Day 9: Best non-FIFA affiliated national teams eg Catalonia and Martinique
There's one player by the name of pena (with a tilt on the n)Renivaldo Pereira de Jesus that deserves a place on the list,he played for FC Porto from 2000 2002,one season(his first at the club)22 goals and oblivion the rest of the career.
I think Mista deserved his place here.
He was outstanding for Valencia in 2003/04 I think, when they won La Liga and the UEFA cup under Rafa Benitez. Slowly disappeared after that season, never came close to the impact he had that year.
Also I'd say Thomas Vermaelen could have his place here. He was brilliant in his first season at Arsenal, was in the team of the year at the end of the season. Got an injury after that and he was never the same player again. Still played for Arsenal many years, managed to get the transfer to Barca, but never played close to that level.
That white Wolfsburg jersey with the green sleeves was beautiful btw
Bobby Zamora 2009-2010
Marcus Stewart was my absolute hero as an eight year old and there's nothing you or anyone else can tell me to make me think he wasn't elite
Ah, the old 'shuttlecock' rumour... I believe it was something larger & attached to the end of Porrini's arm the hit Marco Negri in the eye.
Holy hell I had forgotten all about Dani Güiza. That's crazy.
Oh, and Grafite is now a mediocre commenter for one of the biggest television companies here in Brazil. I guess his greatness truly stayed in that lone season alongside Dzeko. But oh boy, was that great.
Negri! Not heard his name in years. Great video
Have to disagree with you regarding Phillips, he was by far and away one of the most underrated/under appreciated players of the Premier League. He’s proved himself since, too. A fantastic player, I certainly wouldn’t label him as ‘average’.
The fact that Kevin Phillips never played a minute at Euro 2000 tells you everything you need to know about the England national team.

@@jonnstewart2023 Jermaine Defoe not even getting a call up despite getting 15 goals in a relegation threatened Sunderland was even worse than that at Euro 2016

And Man City.
Dude great monologue
Can you make a video on if you think a 48 team WC every 2 years would actually help the growth of the game in Africa and Asia , as FIFA claims it would ?( regardless of whether you like the idea or not)
Good shout
That’s bs the game is already huge in Africa it doesn’t need growth what it needs in those region it’s investment from their local FA
Probably Afonso Alves was also among the 'too obvious' examples? One outstanding season at SC Heerenveen, leading him to getting selected for the Brazilian squad, and Middlesborough snapping him up, but the rest of the man's career was anonymous.
Didn’t think we would notice the voice break at 0:55 did you?
Grafite goal vs Bayern was just legendary
Javi Merino with Inzaghi, Pirlo and Rui Costa. Impressive.
Güiza is a gipsy from a very very humble family. He didn't study and you can see that when he speaks. He was involved in a strange marriage with the then third page celebrity (in Spain) Nuria Bermudez, who was also his football manager (she acquired a UEFA license for that).
Don’t ever disrespect Dempsey he’s the best footballer to ever step foot on this earth

@@lxfj2128 That was a trio.
On the flipside, could you make a video on decent/good players who had an awful period or season in their career ie Hazard or Lingard?
Had no idea about the eye injury Marco Negri had. I vaguely remember the papers at the time portraying him as sulking, not wanting to play as he thought he was too good for the league, wanting more money or a transfer.
sounds about right with the way UK players like to stereotypically depict south europeans at the time
Would be interesting to do a video on the history of Livorno and it's divisiveness politically.. it's pretty cool
A video idea: top most surprising international call ups
What a harsh intro... I loved it
With Negri at Rangers, the shuttlecock in the eye was a supposed cover story. Apparently he was having a fling with Richard Gough’s wife. Gough found out and absolutely battered him.
Never realised Phillips won Euro Golden Boot! Very impressive!
Grafite had the best season for any striker outside of Messi, CR7 & R9… simply couldn’t be stopped that year and the goal against Munich is easily top 3 ever!!

What about his great seasons in Germany and Turkey? I’m sure it’s basing on a whole career & not a premier league career lol
Clint Dempsey was better than just average.
I vaguely remember an Agentinian player called De Sabato being jailed in Brazil after hitting Graffitte (ir spitting on him) during a Copa Libertadores match while he played at San Pablo.
That's all that I knew about the guy until one day he suddenly had that awesome season and seemed pised to be Brazil next great N°9....but as many Brazilians his star faded quickly :(
