Got to give Caulker great credit all the same for his efforts in turning his life around - I know how bloody hard it is, and he's doing fantastically well so far. If there's anyone I'd love to see capped a second time in this list, it'd be him. Go on Steven. :)
I went to school with John Ruddy in St Ives, Cambridgeshire and I agree with Alfie that he is too good to be a number 2. He's first choice at Birmingham city in the Championship now.
Yah I remember watching him and had high hopes. To think how cruel it was that he was tackled by his own team mate on International duty makes it that much harder a pill to swallow. I'll forever hate Martin Taylor for what he did to Eduardo as he was never the same after and also killed Arsenals best chance at the title for a long time now, but getting a career ending tackle by Shaun Wright Phillips when in training for the same national team is a disgrace
Glad to see we agree on John Ruddy. Was a quality keeper at Norwich playing with a fairly leaky defence in front of him so he always had lots to do. Would love to see him get a starting spot with championship club now, he's been sat on the bench too long
I'm a Swansea fan. We had Steven Caulker on loan in our debut Premier League season. He was 19. He was unbelievable. Him and Ashley Williams were awesome together. It never even crossed my mind that we could sign him. I assumed he would go back to Spurs and become a legend there or move on to an even bigger team. It's a shame it didn't work out for him.
That was just a couple of years after he had joined Yeovil in League 1 at age 17 (turning 18 during the season). He was such a great player for us at HP and I always thought that of the various Spurs loan signings we had around that time (including Ryan Mason and Andros Townsend) Caulker would have ended up being the best of the bunch. It's such a shame that his problems in his personal life affected his footballing career
When you said Barton had twice as many convictions as caps, I suddenly wondered how he'd got to 50 caps...only 2 convictions isn't bad for Barton as I remember at least 3 horrific incidents. Stunning out a cigar on someone's face, beating up someone in a chip shop and kicking Ousmane D'abo in the face...so at least one of those didn't result in a conviction.

As a Bristol City fan, we had Steven Caulker on loan in 2010/11, when he was 19 and he was outstanding for us, never seen a player at that level who was so young and composed on the ball and had excellent positioning. We had Danny Rose at the same time and you'd never had thought Rose would have had a better career. Caulker had a gambling problem and didn't have the elite mentality to really kick on from then on
In this and other worlds,I am the 166th liker of this video but was surprised to see a few of these respective players mainly David Nugent boss who only has a senior England call up even though,he has had some good memories during his peak of his career, notably his spell with Preston North End,Portsmouth and Leicester City, good friends!!!
A lot of these players were just given caps to stop them playing for other countries, too. Shawcross to stop him playing for Wales, Cork and Redmond to stop them playing for Ireland...
Suggestion: Crewe Alexandra academy produced national team players, whatever nation. Carl Jenkinson had a chance to play national football for Finland, I seem to remember he played for Finland in U-21 and/or U-19 or thereabouts. His whole career would´ve been quite different, and he might well be a national hero now, and in Euro2020-21 tournament. However, NOW he´d not be automatically starting any more.
It's worth remembering that with the advent of substitutions and far more matches against minnows like San Marino, a one-cap wonder isn't quite what it used to be. As an aside I think for the above reasons all-time International records should be measured in minutes on the pitch, not games played. Currently a five minute substitution against Andorra is, in a sense, the equal of playing a full 90 minutes in a British Home Championship against Scotland (when Scotland were good).
