Dalglish's success at replacing Keegan was not that great a surprise. At the time Scottish football was a lot stronger than it is now. Celtic had reached the semi-final of the European Cup only 3 years earlier and Dalglish himself had played against Atletico Madrid. Dalglish had played all 3 games for Scotland in the 1974 World Cup, when England had failed to qualify, and Scotland went home unbeaten in their 3 group games. The person who seemed irreplaceable at Anfield and who wasn't was Bill Shankly. Few expected Paisley to emulate Shankly and yet it was Paisley who won European Cups, a feat that had escaped Shankly.
It's hard to say Shankly was irreplaceable when the person that replaced him was in his own coaching staff so there really wasn't a big turnover there. The fact that Joe Fagan, who was also a part of that staff, also won a European Cup kinda shows that it's still more of Shankley's blueprint that gave them the European Cups rather than Paisley surpassing Shankley.
Oh yeah,I had Dalglish posters on my wall when he was at Celtic and even as a twelve year old Aussie I knew he was a top player, I remember hearing the news we had signed him ,I was excited.
@@franzreyes846 You miss the point about the personalities of the two men. Shankly was larger than life. Paisley so understated that he was never considered for the England job despite his achievements. This was the era of big personality managers such as Brian Clough and Malcolm Allison. As for the Shankly blueprint ... Shankly's best chance to win the European Cup was in his last season. Liverpool however were beaten home and away by Red Star Belgrade, a team who were then beaten in the next round. Under Shankly Liverpool's style of play was very English - hard tackling and hard running with a never-say-die attitude. It was Paisley who took the lessons of the Red Star defeats on board and developed a more possession-based style of play without losing any of the mental or physical toughness. The result was that Liverpool became the top team in Europe for a decade. In England, due to their more economical use of energy, Liverpool won back-to-back titles, something that they had not done under Shankly.
Speaking of Buffon being in the 1998 France World Cup reminded me of something... Right now we have an active player who was a team mate of Roberto Baggio O.o

Even 2+ years after you made that comment, I have to strongly disagree. Completely different player and profile. He was basically the lungs and legs of Messi and D. Alves. Once Alves left and S. Roberto was the new right back, he became a liabilty together with Sergi. Messi had to become even more creative and develop into a ridiculous playmaker that dropped super deep while Roberto and Rakitic couldn’t set the tempo nor could they playmake, nor could they defend properly. It was painful to watch how Rakitic couldn’t turn around whenever he was under pressure (same goes for Roberto) and rarely switched play. I don't know why it is still a thing that Lahm was not a great RB and decent LB. No midfielder. Actually, once Loew put him back from DM to RB, Germany played much better and went ahead to win that tournament. And Kimmich is a great DM, not a RB
Lahm was a great DM. Germanys problem was the center defense. When Schweinsteiger filled the DM role again, after his injury, Lahm moved to RB and Boateng to CB. The Boateng/Hummels pairing worked great, Mertesacker/Hummels were painfully slow.
I'm amazed that Cafu -> Dani Alves is not on this list (Cafu retired for Brazil 2006, the year Alves made his debut). Replacing imo the greatest RB of all time seemed impossible, so to do it immediately with one of the very best of all time was pretty incredible.

Hey Alfie, I just thought of a cracking idea for a video you could do on the turbulent recent history of Goztepe in the Super Lig. They’re one of the Super Lig’s most well supported clubs (a bit like a Newcastle United, Sunderland or Strasbourg if you may). In the 2001/02 season, they finished seventh in the top flight, however from 2002 to 2008, they were relegated five times in six seasons, due to their inability to reduce their outstanding debt which resulted in the football club being banned from signing new players during that time. In August of 2007, a business based in Istanbul, vowed to take them back to the top flight making them one of the top five clubs in the country, but they were met with lots of suspicions from the fan base, and then they handed over the ownership to another bloke called Mehmet Sepil in 2014. Anyway, they’re back in the Super Lig as a solid mid table/weaker top half team. Why am I bringing all this up? Because apparently Abramovich is looking to possibly buy the club himself, after being sanctioned from the UK. It’s a crazy crazy story and may you could look into this, not to mention, they are not only a rare example of a club that is considered a neighbourhood club, as well as the fact that they’ve played in 3 different stadiums since 2011, but also in 1969, they became the first Turkish football team to play a semi-final of a European competition.
Alfie, you can't lie to us, the first two minutes of Buffon's segment were just you realizing that a two minute introduction was too short for your own standards and feeling compelled to double its length.
To be fair, Buffon was like 40 at P$G. Donnarumma was just poor lol. And also starting over Navas which is a bit silly. Not hating on Donnarumma too much. It’s just that Buffon at his age perhaps wasn’t as sloppy.

im happy to hear your opinion about Romario. I am 38 and Brazilian and ive never seen a better striker than Romario. I mean look at how fast they replaced Navas with Courtois.
Bruh c'mon, it's just paying respect to my idol having been a goalkeeper myself. And a small correction if you will, that old gaffer Perez didn't have faith in Navas despite the man having brought a La Liga Title and 3 successive Champions Leagues to the Bernabeu. And yes Courtois is younger, and now better, but anyone who was and is a Madrid fan knows my guy Navas didn't deserve to be done dirty and isn't getting the respect he deserves; even now in PSG
@@franzreyes846 I don't think what you say is entirely true, since if Navas had replaced Casillas, say after the 2012 season we would be talking something. Even if I think Casillas was amazing and underrated good his last season at Madrid, he wasn't the I win games by myself goalkeeper he used to be. A good example for Mark Anthony to this is how Madrid have as of today seamlessly replaced Ramos and Varane in their backline, even if those two played together as starters at least for 5 years and had been together for 9. big clubs can often do this, but it is that mantra and aura of greatness that replaces greatness that I think makes the difference here

@@ronandevine5760 True. Its actually scary seeing the lack of quality coming through the ranks. In the 00s, you could take it as agiven that half the team would be from a club in the top half of the PL.
Class video Alfie loved it. Would love a part 2, so enjoyable!
Countinho at Liverpool was a player who people said was irreplaceable, but him leaving created an opportunity for a more balanced team. That would make a good list
The money from that transfer did that
Awesome to watch you always.
Yo I just realized that the end of an era Buffon FIFA card is gonna be a goddamned beast of a get
Love this idea, would be interesting to see the same but with managers.
Keegan was my hero when I was ten or eleven, and I was lucky,as an Aussie,to go to the UK with my family for Christmas 75 and saw Liverpool play Ipswich at Anfield in early 76, with Keegan Toshack and the rest amazing experience ,saw a couple of games from the kop in 79/80 as well which was fantastic as well . Those experiences were so magical for me, got to meet a few players got autographs, Emlyn Hughes was there getting some treatment,I think he had gone to wolves by then, I will never forget those trips.
Great video As always Alfie🙌
Can you do a 7 of highest match-winning goalscorers for each position, seemed interesting at first thought
Great Video
Great video as all ways
But neurer has to be on this list ,I'd never think kahn could be replaced that man was such a great gk
Video Idea: 7 players who everybody thinks is bad yet are actually good. Such as fred
I don't know why it is still a thing that Lahm was not a great RB and decent LB. No midfielder. Actually, once Loew put him back from DM to RB, Germany played much better and went ahead to win that tournament. And Kimmich is a great DM, not a RB
Yep just like Phil Neville, is just as effective in either role.
Exactly !
Kimmich is a world class cm/dm but an average RB.
Lahm was the exact opposite.
I mean, it wasn't that immediate. Maicon was ahead of Dani Alves as the first choice RB for Brazil after Cafú retired, and he had the position for like 4 or 5 years.
@@henriquesser Hmm have to admit that I just saw how many games he'd played 07-11 and that he scored in the Copa america final in 07 and thought he was the starter. How do you get 50+ caps in 5 years as a back-up XD
@@mentalmike i think he played a lot on the left too
“And I don’t just say that because we are close friends” lmao Alfie is the best

Donnaruma is literally the regen of Buffon
LFC have nuts skill in replacing forwards, my mind goes through Keegan, King Kenny, Owen, Torres, Suarez, Coutinho, Salah
Alfie, you can't lie to us, the first two minutes of Buffon's segment were just you realizing that a two minute introduction was too short for your own standards and feeling compelled to double its length.
3 weeks after this video was posted, I would disagree in that Donrumma is capable of replacing Buffon.
well Donnarumma has replaced Buffon at PSG at least (mistakes in Champions League that cost PSG)
I'm not hating on the two, but I find it interesting
Both Buffon and Donnarumma have made mistakes that partly caused PSG's capitulation in the UCL
To be fair, Buffon was like 40 at P$G. Donnarumma was just poor lol. And also starting over Navas which is a bit silly. Not hating on Donnarumma too much. It’s just that Buffon at his age perhaps wasn’t as sloppy.
@@jepe4537 yea I have nothing against anyone

Interesting
Or maybe PSG capitulating is funny

Day 390: Ways to fix VAR with your suggestions
After North Macedonia vs Italy, Donnarumma should be out of this list.
Gerd Muller replaced by Karlheinz Rummenigge at Bayern and West Germany. I'm not claiming that Rummenigge was Muller's equal as a striker, but he showed that Der Bomber wasn't irreplacable.
Pulisic trying to be a replacemant for Hazard can be one
what was that ast graphic supposed to mean? suggesting that karius seemed unreplacable before alisson arrived?

Undoubtedly, 1 is Sir Alex
Romario is one of the most respected players in psv history so yes mostly South America but psv fans love him so much he is in the chant with a most club legends
well most germans will disagree with you on that one. while kimmich is undoubtedly a great player, he was heavily critisized for underperforming at both the 2018 world cup and the euro2021. also he got a lot of crap for being an anti vaxxer so there's that...
most germans that are not bayern fans don't really like him especially compared to lahm
True
I never understood why low and played Kim much as a RWB and played gundogan alongside kroos.

im happy to hear your opinion about Romario. I am 38 and Brazilian and ive never seen a better striker than Romario. His composure was nothing ive never seen and he carried that 94 team to a World Cup. Ronaldo was a genius (especially before the injury), but INSIDE the box romario might have been the best player ever.

How was Del Piero considered? Baggio was sold on specifically because Del Piero was better! Not a surprise at all how well Capitano did afterwards.
Dude don't even compare Donnarumma to Buffon yet 🤣
Fabregas was good but Arsenal have never replaced Patrick Vieira and still a long way from doing so.
The gulf in quality between this channel and the god awful HITC Sport never ceases to astound me - love your work, Alfie!
It's completely different styles in all fairness
Donnarumma is currently doing his best to not reach Gigis Level tho.
6:34 that shirt design is cleannn
after this prem season, it’s easily a great one to say haaland for agüero, even pep said agüero was irreplaceable, and then haaland had one of the greatest premier league seasons for a single player ever, and it was his debut.
Donnarumma and many young talents killed their career joining the non football team
I am only here because of the thumbnail. Donnaruma seemed like a good replacement for Buffon, but recent events proved otherwise
This video is superbly written
My name is Mohammed, i play at RW.
Now…idk what the chances of my playing at liverpool as my starting team but replacing Mo.Salah would be crazy!

4:43 was that a dig at football pundits? I mean we all know that Buffon and Alfie hang out at the Park sometimes, but it still sounded like that
Re: no3, il fenomeno was also in that world cup winning 94 squad. He just never got a game, what with him being 16 and Romario and Bebeto being just that damn good.
Good morning ☀️
yea donna definitely did replace buffon 😭💀
Cant even qualify for the word cup without Buffon
Didn't qualify with him either in 2018 in fairness.
donna rums can not even afford buffon shoes ,ship them and put them on
Forlan was a superstar for Atletico he scored 32 league goals one year
I don't think that a player that can't be replaced actually exists, no matter where you look.
Haven’t watched yet, what number is Joe Hart?
Buffon is the greatest goalkeeper of all time, pretty hard to think of any better
Karius
Yashin and ikar
Thanks for proving my point guys
Not better but Casillas is up there with him

How did Dani Alves taking over Cafu's position at right back not in the 7 man?? And how is Navas so disrespected that he doesn't even get a shout for the honorable mentions after he took the mantle Casillas left after that old gaffer Perez ousted the saint of a man?? C'mon now
Casillas was not irreplaceable. He's one of the greatest and most successful keepers ever, yes, but you're just delusional if you think that the biggest club in the world (even as a Messi fan, I can admit that) is not going to develop or buy another great keeper, c'mon man.
A good example for Mark Anthony to this is how Madrid have as of today seamlessly replaced Ramos and Varane in their backline, even if those two played together as starters at least for 5 years and had been together for 9. big clubs can often do this, but it is that mantra and aura of greatness that replaces greatness that I think makes the difference here
Hi Alfie, could you make a video on Johor Darul Ta’zim FC in Malaysia. How the team is basically bankrolled by Malaysia’s Crown Prince. It would be nice to hear the story of another club being bankrolled by an aristocrat or royal.
