Nürnberg are probably the most cursed club in Germany. Other than the relegation after the title, they were also relegated in 2008, after finishing 6th and winning the DFB-Pokal in 2007 and were also the 'victims' of the Bundesliga's most famous relegation thriller in 1999 when they were going into the last match at 12th place, 3 points and 5 goals ahead of the relegation zone (16th place) and still went down.
As if the madness wasn't enough, the Max-Morlock Stadium witnessed one of the most important events in football history, when the 2006 World Cup game between Portugal and the Netherlands resulted in one of the most violent World Cup game in history known as the Battle of Nuremberg, in which 16 yellows and 4 reds were shown by the referees in a disgrace fashion.
And they very, very nearly suffered another calamity in 2020. SK Brann winning the league in 1962 and 1963. They were favorites to win the league in 64, but got relegated in the final game of the season, after losing 1-0 at home to the team at the bottom of the table - Raufoss. Brann did not win the league again until 2007, and has despite being the only top-level team from the 2nd largest city in Norway - and having the most dedicated supporters in Norway, only won the league three times in the clubs 116 year history. They did play in the promotion or relegation playoff depending on how you look at last year so he could be confused. definitely false information as they have been in the bundesliga for at least a decade straight though.
Big mistakes in this video: 1.Napoli went for champions to got relegated in video thumbnail, while they finished 10th this season. 2.Stuttgart had almost got relegated the last season. They won the playoffs to stay. Honorable mentions: 1.Greece crashing out in Euro 2008 without point and only scored once, 4 years after their historic triumph in Portugal. 2.Hellas Verona finishing 10th in 1985-86 Serie A, after their historic win. They were even so close on getting relegated due to the Serie A only having 16 teams at that time. 3.Algeria suffered a humiliating exit in 2021 AFCON without a win and scoring once, having just won 2019 AFCON and 2021 Arab Cup and even maintained a long unbeaten streak in international football, at the same time as Italy and Argentina. 4.Last, but not least, PSIS Semarang. This one is from my country, Indonesia. If you don't know, unlike the other leagues around the world, the professional football leagues in my country had actually started in 1994-95, with the creation of Indonesian Football League (commonly known as Liga Indonesia). In addition, the competitions format often changed every seasons, either using the regular round-robin with the play-offs being held after the regular season had been ended or simply the full regular season with only round-robin (the current season of Liga Indonesia or Liga 1 had its new play-offs known as Championship Series, with teams finishing Top 4 qualified to this stage). However, there's only one case where a team has been relegated after winning the league in my country, and that was this club from Central Java. They won the league back in 1998-99, which was delayed because of the country's political and economical situation relating to May 1998 riots, but when the new season had began in 1999-2000, the club suffered its bad form and eventually got relegated at the end of regular season. According to the Wikipedia page of the 1999-2000 Indonesian Football League (in Bahasa Indonesia), PSIS were sitting on 13rd of the East Zone out of 14 teams from this group, with only 24 points. Additionally, most of the former league winners in my country were struggling to recover after being relegated from the top-tier of Indonesian Football League, such as Persipura (Jayapura) and Sriwijaya FC (Palembang), who had enjoyed a big success in the past and are now in lower tier of Indonesian Football (Liga 2). Edit: Actually, there are other 2 Indonesian clubs who suffered an immediate relegation after winning the championship: Petrokimia Putra in 2003 and Persebaya Surabaya in 2005. The latter was relegated as a special punishment for not taking a part in the playoffs. I would also note that Bhayangkara Presisi FC got relegated from this season's Liga 1, having previously won the championship back in 2017, though it doesn't count for this trait.
That happens a lot in Indonesia. We've had Petrokimia Putra (Gresik) (champions 2002, relegated 2003) and Persebaya (champions 2004, relegated 2005 but that was for refusing to take part in the championship playoff)
@@motoboyaquiemlondrinapr Persebaya 2005 wasn't relegated because of poor results. They were punished with relegation by Indonesian FA (PSSI) for "violating the spirit of the game" relating to the championship playoff's withdrawal. This is much like Marseille and Juventus, who were relegated because of match-fixing scandal.
I think perspective plays a part. Leicester were never expected to win a title. 12th would have been considered a good season for them in any other year. So, nobody expected them to defend the title. It feels worse when you don't expect it. Like Napoli finishing about 10th last season.
I instantly knew that my club, THE Club (Nürnberg), would be featured in this list. Sometimes it feels a bit of a burden to be a fan of such an infamous club... but I console myself that it resembles life really close: it's a constant struggle and most of the time you lose but you still keep on going.
Thanks Alfie. That France disaster at 2002 World Cup won me a few quid spread betting along with USA doing well, Cameroon doing badly and Turkey's 11 second goal in the third place play off game.
An interesting video would be the lowest scoring champions of all time. I often think about this because I know Swedish champions in 1998, AIK scored 25 goals in 26 games which I think is insane.
River Plate won the 2008 Clausura, only to be last place the next season, we could have been relegated if argentina had a normal competition instead of the promedios
During this video I thought about Fenerbahce getting 99 points and not winning the league. How about a video for the very best seasons by sides not to win their domestic league? Villa in 1930/31 scoring 128 goals, which I think is still an English top flight record, but not winning the league is one that sprung to mind.
Great idea, it would be fun to watch. Do you think that Napoli being second with 91 points, its greatest point tally in history, could make it to seventh place? Only greater disappointments that come to my mind are Liverpool and Fenerbahce
Without checking I recall Real Madrid under Pellegrini getting a ridiculous points tally in early 2010s and not winning the league. Would be interested if there are any other instances with more nuanced reasons other than just the highest points tally for a great side to come up short, that Alfie may know about. For instance the side I support, Stoke City, had a great side in the mid 70s and in 74-75 had a season with 5 broken legs to key players and it curtailed our season but we still only finished 4 points behind the top. Not the closest we’ve come to winning the league but it’s the one that was curtailed partially due to bad luck. Compared with 1946-47 when we had three of our greatest ever players in the same side. Neil Franklin, the best centre back in the world who Alfie wrote a book about, Stanley Matthews who was possibly the best player in the world or at least the country at that point and Freddie Steele who was a prolific striker. Matthews, who was our greatest ever player was sold with 3 games to go and we went on to win 1, draw 1 and lose 1 without him. A win on the last day would have won us league but we bottled it. There may be more nuanced reasons why a side has failed to win a league despite being a superb side and would be interested to see Alfie do a video like that.
EP Setif in Algeria in 1988. Relegated after they won the championship the previous season. And somehow they managed to win on that season the African Champions Cup. It would be great if you would make a video about this

Funnily enough France bucked the curse of horrific title defence in World Cup in 2022... kind of. If they won the cup they would have banished the curse once and for all. They did not, though. So at least the 'failed defence' argument still holds.
SK Brann 1964 season unfairly overlooked. Back to back champions in 1962 and 1963 before being relegated in 1964. Which makes it worse than the ones here who only won one title before failing.
Not to mention generally recruiting poorly, not investing the money we got from player sales, fairly mediocre management post Dalglish and there not being a great depth in the squad we had in 1995. That's before you get into the passing of JW, the Walker family being fairly indifferent and the all the shit that has come since!!
Alfie, you mentioned the great goalkeeper Frank Swift when talking about Man City being relegated the season after winning the league in 36/37. Frank Swift became a football journalist after he retired. In February 1958 he was sent to Belgrade to cover Manchester United's European Cup campaign and their away tie against Red Star Belgrade. Tragically, he never made it back to Manchester - in those days, the press pack normally flew with the travelling team, and Frank Swift's return journey ended on that fateful runway in Munich.
I know its not the samd but in 2012 in Argentina Banfield went down having won the 2009 "Apertura", considering that in Argentina we have into acount your last 3 years to see who goes down, Banfield technically got relegated with a first division champion campaign
Following in the footsteps of other nonsense Nigerian campaigns like Stationery Stores (champions 1992, relegated 1993 for failing to complete their fixtures) and Shooting Stars (champions 1998, relegated 1999)
Wales - Barry Town won numerous Welsh League titles, until 2003. The 2003-04 saw the team finish bottom and didn't win their first game until January! Nonetheless, they were relegated.
You could've mentioned Fluminense in the 2013 season. In the previous year, they *won* the Brazilian championship; in 2013, they very narrowly avoided relegation.
If you do the maths, Manchester City in the 1937/38 season wouldn't have been relegated if a win was awarded 3 points back then. With 3 points for a win, Birmingham would have gone from 18th to 22nd with 48 points, West Bromwich Albion would have got relegated due to having an inferior goal average, Arsenal would have won the league with just 73 points in 42 games.
What I randomly found out while managing a club in Finland on Football Manager was that TPV (a club from Tampere) won the top division in 1994, previously being an unfancied side that only played in the top flight in 1971 and then returned in 1993. Anyway, as it sometimes happens, TPV finished 12th and thus dead last in 1995 after winning the title the previous year, and apart from a return in 1999 have been poodling around the second and third divisions.
Some honorable mentions: Juventus finished 12 in 1962 (so worse than Milan in 1997). Bayern finished 10th in a season when they won the European cup. This should give Dortmund hope, if the 10th in Germany can be number one in Europe, so can the 5th team. Stuttgart were always bad when they have to defend the title. They finished 10th in 1985. Betis were 7th after winning the title in 1935, which doesn't sound so bad, but there were only 12 teams in the league and Betis had more losses than wins. Milan were relegated because of match-fixing, too, before Juventus.
Uh, Alfie. Poch didn't get sacked by Chelsea as he left via mutual consent since the club did want him to remain for next season but he decided to leave after securing their first Conference League appearance this month.
Lyn Oslo won the 1968 Norwegian league title, but finished bottom and were relegated in 1969. Ahead of that bad title defence they reached the quarter-finals of the 1968-69 Cupwinners Cup, losing by only one goal to Barcelona. Both matches were played in Spain b/c of the weather conditions in Norway, and after a 2-3 defeat in the 1st match Lyn lead 2-0 in the return leg with 15 mins left, only to see Barca scoring twice late on and winning through to the semifinals. But after that a dismal league season followed ...
Fluminense won the Brazilian League in 2012 and were relegated in 2013, but they managed to escape relegation because Portuguesa fielded an ineligible player
Look how insanely tight that City relegation season is. I think converting to 3 points per win to compare by modern standards would be the correct thing to do, even if City wouldn't have actually been relegated with it, but just for the illustration of how close it was. The winners, Arsenal, would have scored 73 points, and Birmingham would have finished bottom with 48. This is in 42 games. If every team had a PPG matching this over a 38 game season (essentially converting the league table to modern standards), Birmingham would have finished last with 43 points and Arsenal would have won with 66 points. Imagine that today. Insane
It was because of the poor performance of France in the 2002 WC i think that led to FIFA no longer granting automatic entry of the holders to the following tournament as was the case prior to that
He doesn't care too much about the women's football. However, what happened to Spain women's football seems to be a reincarnation of the men's side back in 2008-2012. And more ironically, Barcelona became a central part of the success, with 2 Ballon d'Or winners Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmati.
Thanks for that great list. Can you also do a list about the opposite, so like from close to Relegation to close champions or winning it like Leicester City? Or also the best title defences?
19:28 Alfie hats off for highlighting these stats, because that might be the craziest stat I have ever seen in football. Man City scored more goals than *any other team* but they still got relegated? What the hell. I wouldn't even think that's possible.
This is baseball (MLB) but still worth a mention. 1998 Florida Marlins. A year after a miracle World Series win, the entire team is sold off and it showed. They finished 54-108, one of the worst single season records of all time! They finished 9 games behind the second worst team.
Thank you for including Herfølge. Just a side note I would invite you to check out the Danish superliga. This year have been a crazy close raze for top spot
couple extra ones from Italy, Torino naturally collapsed a bit after the Superga air disaster, but didn't do nearly as bad as this year's Napoli. as far as I know, serie a's worst title defence is Hellas Verona in 85-86, where they picked up just 30 points and had a goal difference of -9
Germany 2009 has to be there. They had 6 future World Cup Winners: Manuel Neuer, Benedikt Höwedes, Jerome Boateng, Mats Hummels, Sami Khedira and Mesut Özil. Also featuring future Dortmund captain Marcel Schmelzer and Bayern Striker Sandro Wagner
One thing that hurt Leeds was the goalies not picking up backpass rule. I recall so many Leeds game in that title season which would begin with the ball going right back to the keeper and building from that. Also Mel Sterland should have been replaced in the summer as he was no longer fit enough. Leeds didn't do that till late in the season when David Kerslake was signed. Then they found Gary Kelly made a great right back in the summer and thus Kerslake was moved on after only eight games.

One important thing about France: the 2002 World Cup was the last one where the World Champion was automatically qualified. That may be one factor. Fortunately, after 2002 all World Champions have to play in the qualifiers.
IIRC they brought in that rule literally because France had been so bad and Frances "excuse" was the lack of competitive fixtures they had due to not going through qualification
Another honorable mention: in Bolivia's two championship by season structure, Jorge Wilstermann managed to be crowned champions of the first 2010 championship ("apertura") and relegated after the second ("clausura"). Relegation was made by points average of the last two seasons ("promedio"), but Jorge Wistermann being ahead of only one team in 2010 Clausura (and by goal difference) certainly didn't help.
River plate in 2008, they won the clausura with only 2 losses, and only 6 months later, in the apertura, they finished rock bottom at 20th with only 14 points and just 2 wins in 19 games
France had an even worse title defence after winning the European Championship in 1984, bombing in the qualifiers for Euro 88 (winning one match out of eight and finishing third in their group behind the Soviet Union and East Germany).
5:28 I checked and it that video is not banned in Turkey currently. I also remember watching it back then. Another reason for Başakşehir's title win in 2020 was that all big 3 Turkish clubs were bad that season. It is sort of a "leaving the stage for children" moment, I don't know if the expression is lost in translation. What I mean is that at least one of the big 3 Istanbul clubs were good each season as far as I remember watching the game since 2007, they weren't in 2020. This is the same with Trabzonspor's title win in 2022 after their last official league title in 1984. In 2022, all the big 3 were awful. If you go and check the final standings you would think that Trabzonspor winning league by around 8 points were no big deal but Trabzonspor were considered champions by January or so, they were so far ahead for the whole season and only starting losing points in the end, that year Galatasaray and Beşiktaş finished around 40 points or more below the champions for example One other thing, There was also a joke made about Başakşehir having little to no fans, see that year 2020 spring was the time of the covid outbreak and the matches were made without fans for a period, and since they didnt have fans before, covid didn't affect them and they won the league
In Finland 1994 TPV won title, in 1995 they came 12th in 14 team league and they were relegated and 1995 FC Haka won the title and 1996 they came 12th and were relegated.
2013 Fluminense, they won the brazillian league in 2012 to get relegated by points in 2013, but after a bunch of trials they get another team to get relegated instead of them because of another team getting points deducted out of nowhere
Fluminense went from being brazilian champions in 2012, with a squad that contained players such as Deco and Brazil's 2014 WC striker Fred, to only surviving relegation in 2013 because another club, Portuguesa, lost points after fielding a player in irregular conditions in the last round of the tournament
I know this is about irl football, but in fifa 23, Wolves somehow won the prem in one season, just to get 20th in the next season! Again, I know this is about irl football, just wanted to show that weird stuff happens in fifa standings-wise
Everton finished 14th in 1970/71 the season after they won the league title by 9 points (2 points for a win back then), Ipswich Town finished 17th in 1962/63, four points above relegation (2 points for a win) after winning the league title at their first attempt the season before
Bit different because it's a division 2 side (since the US doesn't have pro/rel), but Orange County SC won the USLC playoffs in 2021 and then finished last in the USLC Western Conference standings in the 2022 season.
You should consider Fluminense in the 2013 season too. They were the 2012 Brasileirão champions and nearly got relegated* *if you take a look, they went to court against another Serie A club claiming some irregularities in calling up a suspended player for a match. Because of that, they weren't relegated.
I'd like to throw FK Vardar into the mix. Relegated from North Macedonia's top flight in the 2020/21 season as defending champions. They even got 15 points less than the previous season form 10 more games.

Also put countries who suffered from world cup curse
Strong candidates when even Leicester City 2016-17 doesn't make the final shortlist.
Sometimes it feels a bit of a burden to be a fan of such an infamous club... but I console myself that it resembles life really close: it's a constant struggle and most of the time you lose but you still keep on going.
yeah hahaha, was still suprised they managed to be in the first spot here
ooooooh der fcn steigt wieder aaaaauf
0:28 Stuttgart was also in the Bundesliga last season
Losing Spalleti and Kim killed Napoli
i couldn't believe it when they hired Rudi Garcia to replace Spaletti, wtf were they thinking
Thanks Alfie. That France disaster at 2002 World Cup won me a few quid spread betting along with USA doing well, Cameroon doing badly and Turkey's 11 second goal in the third place play off game.
Stuttgart were relegation playoffs last season, but they survived. So they weren’t newly promoted
An interesting video would be the lowest scoring champions of all time.
I often think about this because I know Swedish champions in 1998, AIK scored 25 goals in 26 games which I think is insane.
I know milan won the league with 35 scored once
@@NineHandsWell actually, I think it was busted by alfie himself
Trabzonspor did one better in 1980, winning th league with 25 goals in 30 games.
It would be great if you would make a video about this
Hellas Verona won Serie A in 1985 but finished 10th out of 16 in 1986, probably even worse than Napoli this year
A (dis)honourable mention should be Jiangsu FC who won the Chinese Super League in 2020, but then got dissolved just THREE MONTHS after winning the title 💀💀

16:41 I like that the english wiki calls them FC København and not FC Copenhagen as they are referred to outside Denmark (and Scandinavia probably) but at the same time calls AB København for AB Copenhagen
Uruguay at the 1934 World Cup.
Didn’t even try to defend their title
Fluminese in the 2012-2013 season to sue Portugueaa that they used in the last match of the season a player suspended for not to relegate to Serie B.
Man City won the league in 1937 and were relegated the following season you can't get a worse title defense than that
With a positive goal difference too
Nürnberg did the same
Thanks for confirming what had already been featured in the video
Funnily enough France bucked the curse of horrific title defence in World Cup in 2022... kind of. If they won the cup they would have banished the curse once and for all.
They did not, though. So at least the 'failed defence' argument still holds.
the curse is that the winner does not get out of the group so yes they broke that curse into bits by reaching the final.
SK Brann 1964 season unfairly overlooked. Back to back champions in 1962 and 1963 before being relegated in 1964. Which makes it worse than the ones here who only won one title before failing.
The problem with Blackburn Rovers is that they sold Alan Shearer and were never the same again
Not to mention generally recruiting poorly, not investing the money we got from player sales, fairly mediocre management post Dalglish and there not being a great depth in the squad we had in 1995. That's before you get into the passing of JW, the Walker family being fairly indifferent and the all the shit that has come since!!
Shearer was there for 95/96 and was the Prem top scorer again. He left in the pre-season after.
Soccer reddit had a post that Napoli had the worst performance by a Serie A champion since 49/50 Torino and that was after the Superga air disaster
13:20 That Raymond Domenech guy was just apparently the biggest PoS of all time.
I know its not the samd but in 2012 in Argentina Banfield went down having won the 2009 "Apertura", considering that in Argentina we have into acount your last 3 years to see who goes down, Banfield technically got relegated with a first division champion campaign
Bayelsa United won the Nigerian Premier League in 08/09, and got relegated the next season during their title defence in 2009/10 finishing 18th.
Ayyy, Alfie gang.
Here pulling the classic allnighter while eating Lasagna, thanks for uploading just in time for me to enjoy it even more 🖤
If you do the maths, Manchester City in the 1937/38 season wouldn't have been relegated if a win was awarded 3 points back then. With 3 points for a win, Birmingham would have gone from 18th to 22nd with 48 points, West Bromwich Albion would have got relegated due to having an inferior goal average, Arsenal would have won the league with just 73 points in 42 games.
Man City won the league in the previous season with the same points system as the season that they were relegated.
@@Evemeister12exactly
Oh well. Now 3 teams go down and they would have been 20th, but only 2 went down back then
What I randomly found out while managing a club in Finland on Football Manager was that TPV (a club from Tampere) won the top division in 1994, previously being an unfancied side that only played in the top flight in 1971 and then returned in 1993. Anyway, as it sometimes happens, TPV finished 12th and thus dead last in 1995 after winning the title the previous year, and apart from a return in 1999 have been poodling around the second and third divisions.
Some honorable mentions:
Juventus finished 12 in 1962 (so worse than Milan in 1997).
Before finishing: Herfølge has to be here!!!
Fluminense FC won the brazilian title in 2012 and was relegated in 2013, until a very fitting points drop from Portuguesa saved them in the 11th hour
Good luck to Napoli in Serie B next season
Look how insanely tight that City relegation season is. I think converting to 3 points per win to compare by modern standards would be the correct thing to do, even if City wouldn't have actually been relegated with it, but just for the illustration of how close it was.
The winners, Arsenal, would have scored 73 points, and Birmingham would have finished bottom with 48. This is in 42 games. If every team had a PPG matching this over a 38 game season (essentially converting the league table to modern standards), Birmingham would have finished last with 43 points and Arsenal would have won with 66 points. Imagine that today. Insane
It was because of the poor performance of France in the 2002 WC i think that led to FIFA no longer granting automatic entry of the holders to the following tournament as was the case prior to that
Interestingly, France also ended the group stage curse as a holders in 2022, yet they still lost the World Cup Final.
Hi Alfie, i think you should make a video about women's football resurgence. From England Lionesses Euro 2022 win to Spain's recent golden generation.
Women's football is an entirely different sport. Has nothing to do with this channel.
You actually sounded out Kvara's name properly, nice haha
Thanks for that great list. Can you also do a list about the opposite, so like from close to Relegation to close champions or winning it like Leicester City? Or also the best title defences?
City winning the title and then being relegated is legendary amongst City fans. It’s peak Typical City

19:28 Alfie hats off for highlighting these stats, because that might be the craziest stat I have ever seen in football. Man City scored more goals than *any other team* but they still got relegated? What the hell. I wouldn't even think that's possible.
Great Alfie, Stockport County vid would be just as good!

There are a lot of different champions this year! Like Polands 4th different champion in 4 years. Love to see it
couple extra ones from Italy, Torino naturally collapsed a bit after the Superga air disaster, but didn't do nearly as bad as this year's Napoli. as far as I know, serie a's worst title defence is Hellas Verona in 85-86, where they picked up just 30 points and had a goal difference of -9

In that case I'm gonna suggest 2014 season of J league side Gamba Osaka, who have won a domestic treble in their first season back in J1.
Excellent video, very interesting. How about doing a video about the 7+ clubs named River Plate?
The King of Conflicts of Interest 🤣
"We have to talk about Alfie"
River plate in 2008, they won the clausura with only 2 losses, and only 6 months later, in the apertura, they finished rock bottom at 20th with only 14 points and just 2 wins in 19 games
France had an even worse title defence after winning the European Championship in 1984, bombing in the qualifiers for Euro 88 (winning one match out of eight and finishing third in their group behind the Soviet Union and East Germany).
Spain (Euro 1964 champion) in 1968 and Italy (Euro 1968 champion) in 1972 also bombed in the qualifiers for those Euros.
@@tomasjurogutierrez2294 True, although they both won their initial qualifying groups before losing in the quarter-finals.
21:30 isn't it mad how much older people used to look? These lads were 23 and 25 at the time this photo was taken.
If you go and check the final standings you would think that Trabzonspor winning league by around 8 points were no big deal but Trabzonspor were considered champions by January or so, they were so far ahead for the whole season and only starting losing points in the end, that year Galatasaray and Beşiktaş finished around 40 points or more below the champions for example
One other thing, There was also a joke made about Başakşehir having little to no fans, see that year 2020 spring was the time of the covid outbreak and the matches were made without fans for a period, and since they didnt have fans before, covid didn't affect them and they won the league
In Finland 1994 TPV won title, in 1995 they came 12th in 14 team league and they were relegated and 1995 FC Haka won the title and 1996 they came 12th and were relegated.
Video idea: 7 one season wonder managers
Small correction, Stuttgart isnt promoted, they won the relegation as the 1st league team.
2013 Fluminense, they won the brazillian league in 2012 to get relegated by points in 2013, but after a bunch of trials they get another team to get relegated instead of them because of another team getting points deducted out of nowhere
21:49 I'd love to know how Pep's ticky tacka would get on with THAT ball...😅

You should consider Fluminense in the 2013 season too. They were the 2012 Brasileirão champions and nearly got relegated*
*if you take a look, they went to court against another Serie A club claiming some irregularities in calling up a suspended player for a match. Because of that, they weren't relegated.
I'd like to throw FK Vardar into the mix. Relegated from North Macedonia's top flight in the 2020/21 season as defending champions. They even got 15 points less than the previous season form 10 more games.
