    I don't think we heard enough of the game to know where the pieces really were. I think we only heard a few of the moves, with many moves inbetween that we didn't get to hear. So we end up with a game that doesn't make sense to us, but for them, it was a great game.

      Agreed. After the move "king side castle" by black, Jane comes and says bishop takes e7. However that's not possible cuz there's a knight in between that square.
      Now someone posted the original match of professional chess and it shows all the moves

    This game is the same as Fischer - Spassky, which was played in Reykjavik in 1972 (Game 6). So, in that case, before the bishop takes e7, we have e3 by white, h6 to kick the bishop, then we have bishop h4, b6 by black, the pawn that is on c4 captures on d5 and after that, the knight captures on d5. Only then, bishop captures on e7.

    That final position looks like the famous match of the century between Fischer and Spassky. In that case, some of the apparently illegal moves make sense by assuming they skipped many moves in the series.

    I don't mean to offend anyone, but those who complain about the game and their moves not making sense don't know what they're talking about, plain and simple. The game cannot be judged by the scenes shown in this video or even in the episode for that matter, because most of the in-between moves weren't shown. You can't recreate the board and follow their moves, because you simply don't know all their moves. Most of the critisism shows that people who commented haven't watched the episode or don't remember it.

    • @EatCarbs

      come on, Occam's razor. Don't try to find complicated solutions to simple things. Look how Patrick touches rook first when castling king side. Rules of chess allow to castle only touching king first, because castling is considered as king move in chess. It's obvious that neither Patrick, nor that guy Thompson actually knows anything about chess.

    Why all these objections to the bishop moving to e7? You guys are assuming that they show every move that the players played. Perhaps before Jane engages in bishop on bishop up violence, Bunting had moved his knight to e4 and opened up the lane to e7. They also don't show every time Jane ate, slept, or went to the bathroom but nobody's wondering how he's not starving, quite lovely for being sleep deprived, or acting cavalier for someone whose bowels are about to explode.

    like several people pointed out already, this is the game they were playing, several moves are skipped because they presumably had made moves off camera.
    the only thing that doesn't make sense is at 3:13 since at no point in the entire game black's pawn goes to f4, but the bishop to c4 right afterwards is accurate.
    black resigned in the end at the original game and i'm not really that good at chess but if they kept going i think white would have forced mate in 3, which is also accurate to what patrick says.

    • @davidloveday8473
      @davidloveday8473 5 лет назад

      I think the point is that the errors show that the makers of the show ultimately treat their audience like idiots and don't care about them. No one making a high profile show like this would dream of making obvious mistakes that show the lead character with a brilliant mind being a total idiot, if they think the audience will notice them, because it spoils the audience's immersion and trust in the character and shoe. Imagine showing a character who is meant to be good at golf playing a round and repeatedly striking the ball with the wrong side of the club. Or someone who is a supposedly great cook preparing for a dinner party by not only making a microwave meal (!) but failing to take off the outer packaging (!). It breaks the spell and destroys the audience experience.
      The fact that the makers of this show have made such obvious errors with chess here can only be explained by two possibilities: either they assume that no one in their audience is capable of understanding the basics of chess (they treat their audience like idiots); or they realize that some might, but they simply don't care about them.

    • @albertbatfinder5240
      @albertbatfinder5240 4 года назад

      FerretJohn Why not just get it right? I mean, they are gonna have continuity people checking the levels of water in glasses, the length of rolled sleeves, the combing of hairstyle, makeup, position of coffee cup handles, lighting changes, actors positions, etc,etc,etc. The director decided to make a chess game the overarching theme of this episode. Just get it right. If it’s too geeky, have a police chase instead.

    • @FerretJohn
      @FerretJohn 4 года назад

      @@albertbatfinder5240 actually they usually don't have people checking the length of rolled sleeves or the level of water in water glasses, nor did they feel the need to find a professional chess player to check the game. Why? Because the producers don't cater to the micro-minority of nitpicking haters who obsess over every tiny detail in order to show how much smarter they are. The vast majority of watchers didn't care if the ga,e was accurate, it was fun to watch regardless and their main focus was seeing the heroes catch the bad guy.

    • @to_HANDLE

    As far as the final turns are concerned:
    Nothing in chess is definitely predicted or set. But since it's a game about logic and progressive action, there is a matter of outcome (win/lose) probability versus consecutive position. It is a classical game, in the deepest meaning of the word. If the round is bound for a close, the opponent does not resist but excepts defeat. Players do not chase each other's Kings, like it happens on mmo or arcade.
    Certain moves are destined simply because the alternatives do not reverse the outcome. Hence even though "force check in 3 moves" may be an overstatement but it is the right call.

    • @KeenX72

    The chessboard is incorrect. The white queen is on the wrong square. The rule is the queen always starts on her own colour.

    This game doesnt work. Either you have missed out moves, or they have made up the game.
    As previous people have already said, when they should be exchanging knight for bishop, there should be a knight and queen on the black's kingside.
    Most dissappointing, thought this was going to be a real game.

      Hello, English isn't my first language but I'll try to comment this: I can't either.
      I am not a professional chess player, but I know this is the sixth game of the Match of the Century: Fischer vs Spaasky (1972).
      This game looks like it has no sense, but there aren't all the moves from the original game.

  • @baligeko

    "Forced mate in 3 moves" ???
    It is now black's turn...
    I do not believe this 100%
    PS Thanks for putting this video together ;-)

      Agreed. Black is ahead in pieces. Jane has no way to move the pawn forward to put the king in check.
      He also has his Rook in a line with a queen in a good support position. Any offensive is going to be tricky.
      Not to mention the Bishop move doesn't gain Jane anything. Taking the pawn doesn't cost him anything, and it lets him add a bit of pressure.
