My understanding is that the record companies own the bands, and the band gets money by performing and songwriting.
So, if anything, the record company gets most of it, since musicians are paid by record companies.
Grohl gets royalties for the Nirvana songs he penned, but not for the ones Kurt wrote. They belong to Kurt Cobain, or in the event of his death, his estate (Courtney and Bean, in this case). Dave has no right to Kurt's songwriting royalties (unless Kurt allows it in his will).

And the weird thing was, they'd only recently hooked up, and I'd been to every single one of Nirvana's local shows for a couple years, so Kurt knew who I was, and was just being nice like always. He treated his fans so well, and was always kinda quiet and chill. Courtney pitched a fit if Kurt even glanced at another female.
That's a cool and funny story. That's classic courtney love for us. Kurt Cobain would have been better of without her. She was a server drug addict, a stripper and singer of a band that only had 1 decent song, and it was the song beavis and butthead made fun of.

I'm 26 and when I was 12 and 13 motley crue was my favorite band. I had all of their albums and a bunch of merch and I had the whole set of the shout at the devil action figures that each came with a piece of Tommy's drums. I was obsessed with them. My point though is that even back then they were old and nobody my age even knew who they were and people that did thought I was weird for liking them. I grew up in Louisville though. Its just interesting that fifteen years later every kid knows who they are and they are all of the sudden very relevant again. You're probably right though I'd say none of that has anything to do with the movie at all that makes sense.

However, booze and heavy drug use wouldn't have helped and were definitely contributing factors as well.

Someone explain to Courtney that just because you killed the lead singer of Nirvana doesn't mean you get to spend Nirvana money. Phil was always aiming to make ammends with him and he wouldn't have none of it, I believe Vinnie also dragged Rex into the feud because from Rex's perspective the fall of Pantera was both the Darrels and Anselmo sides fault that they couldn't just get their shit together, sit down and leave everything clear.
