  • I chatted with the great-grandson of Titanic's Quartermaster Hichens, Simon Medhurst! Often referred to as the "man who sank Titanic", Robert Hichens was the man at the helm when Titanic hit the iceberg. His behavior in lifeboat 6 has been heavily scrutinized over the years and sadly he was often labeled a "coward" by the media. His infamous depiction in James Cameron's Titanic shows Robert Hichens telling Margaret Brown aka "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" to "shut that hole in your face". Due to this negative portrayal and heavy criticism, I wanted to sit down with Simon and hear more about the life of Quartermaster Hichens directly from his very own relative. Here's what I learned! This is the untold story of Quartermaster Robert Hichens!
    1. Intro - 00:00
    2. Simon Medhurst Background - 01:17
    3. The early life of Robert Hichens - 04:33
    4. What is a Quartermaster? - 05:32
    5. The night of the sinking - 06:29
    6. Loading lifeboat 6 - 08:07
    7. Accusations in the lifeboat - 11:20
    8. Carpathia Arrives - 14:44
    9. Why so much focus on boat 6? - 15:29
    10. Life after Titanic - 16:22
    11. Misconceptions about Quartermaster Hichens - 22:01
    12. More info about Simon - 23:45
    13. Wrap up and final thoughts - 25:10

    Oh this is so sad... I didn't know any of this.
    I'll give it my 2 cents: could he have come back to find survivors? Yes, of course, but so could every other lifeboat. We have to remember only ONE came back, so it's extremely unfair to put all the blame on Hichens.

    It's actually quite common for couples who have been together for a long time and who are exceptionally close and loving to die that close together. It is known and has been referenced by many (even medical professionals) as dying of a broken heart.
    Honestly seems like they were just the kind of couple that would do so. It takes a lot of love to stay together through that amount of time apart on the regular, that kind of trauma and untreated PTSD, and the jail time.
    Something something "she stayed with him so he went with her" something sentimental something.

    Facebook, Instagram, now RUclips. Since I found your facebook page and your great videos I cannot get enough of it. Thank you. I’ve always love everything Titanic. Sadly I hate to read, it takes all my energy to even read about stuff I am truly interested in. This is great I get the info by watching your videos. Love it! I’ve seen a traveling exhibit in my hometown in Quebec, then the Titanic museum in Branson twice, but these are just wow.

    It's interesting how movies tend to reflect the social and political climate of the era they were created in. While I like Cameron's film, it clearly has an agenda. The wealthy and the crew are frequently made to look bad, while Third Class passengers are presented as pure and sincere. Robert Hichens seems to be a victim of this. It's a dramatic contrast to the way these groups were depicted in 1958's A Night to Remember.

    • @galoon
      @galoon 2 года назад +2

      @Mekehl Yep, it's an agenda. Does it correspond to reality? Sometimes it does. Just because a study is scientific doesn't mean it's valid; there's a lot of poor science out there. In my experience wealthy and poor people treat each other about the same. I take people one at a time because you simply can't judge by the group. I've known millionaires who were so nice you'd never know they had two dimes to rub together, and poor people who were complete jerks. I've also seen it the other way around.

    • @MsClepsydra
      @MsClepsydra Год назад

      @Mekehl there's literally nothing "scientific" claiming wealthy people treat others badly, the very term "treat" is way too vague to be in a scientific hypothesis. In fact, the so-called "old money" type of rich, in my experience are usually very courteous and down to earth. They've been taught manners from a young age and have nothing to prove. The worst ones are insecure people who acquired wealth too fast either by luck, inheritance or marriage and have status anxiety, so they mistreat others as a way to dominate and feel good about themselves. And some poor people who blame others for their situation. Statistically most violent offenders are from a modest background.
      What you're talking about isn't science, it's populism.

    I am reading "The Man Who Sank Titanic - The Troubled Life of Quartermaster Robert Hitchens" by his descendant Sally Nilson, and I'm loving the man. Robert was very different he was compared to what we've been told of. It's terrible how bad he's remembered.

    Robert Hitchens was not to blame for anything. He was simply the man who turned the wheel. It was not his decision which way to turn it. That's the decision of the captain, or the officer in charge. It's exactly the same on a train. My father was an engineer for 42 years. The engineer is the man who runs the throttle and brakes but it's the conductors train. The engineer simply does what the conductor tells him to do. It's the same way with quartermaster Hitchens.

    the problem with the Titanic is that a lot of the crew applied the rules when the rules in actual effect didn't apply anymore this isn't the fault of the crew but more of the situation at hand and the training of particular crew.
    the situation was foreign and highly unusual (struck down by disaster in mirror flat waters)
    also, the much later known horizon displacement mirage wasn't known yet which happens when a low layer of cold air is under a layer of warm air in the dark the real horizon becomes invisible and gets lifted above crow's nest visibility so the iceberg just appeared out of nothing!
    yup! Even in moonless skies, icebergs have visible wakes and foam disturbance when waters are mirror flat also they turn and roll at times causing miles of visible and viewable disturbance even on moonless nights.
    the titanic reported non of that nor the normally quite visible disturbance of other ice nearby even though earlier radio reports before the horizon mirage clearly reported on it by other ships.

    it was not robert hitchins who sank the titanic it was captain edward john smith .
    Reason why ? titanic was steaming at nearly full speed 22 knotts in a known ice field with multiple ice warnings in hand .the captain is directly responsible for the passengers , crew and the safety of the vessel .regardless of potential coercion from j bruce ismay to speed up , the captain has the final word period .

    I think Murdough who was also portrayed as a villian in the movie (he shot the one guy Tommy that was friends with Jack and Fabrizio and then shot himself) but from what I understand in real life he wasn't actually like that in the least bit and actually did well handing the situation as best as he could just like this man did. Really sad they were mis-portrayed I think that was a huge missed opportunity by James Cameron although I'm sure he had reasons behind it.

    In all fairness a lot of people with Nazi relatives in WW2 said the same thing "Not my family". 2nd, I've read that Molly Brown at point took the helm from him. That's pretty bad. 3rd, As is often the case, the heroes in these type of situations are the ones who don't follow the rules and don't listen to every order. 4th. Ofcourse life is not always as black and white as a movie and I haven't read the book about him but the rest of his life is pretty illustrative. 🤷🏼‍♂️
