It’s a shame as I enjoy the Wizarding world and my sister said she wasn’t going to play Hogwarts Legacy because of Rowling’s statements. Me? I’m playing the game (when it comes out on PS4) because I want to see how things were in the 1800’s! Besides I don’t associate the art with the artist’s beliefs. (Though I’ll be amazed if someone asked if she actually took a peak at the Cursed Child before saying it should be canon especially with what she said about time turners and why she destroyed them)

The reason it failed was because it didn't know what it wanted to be. If you want to make a prequel about Dumbledore and Grindelwald, make it about that and nothing else. If you want to make it about Newt and his Fantastic Beasts, make it about him and his beasts and nothing else, similar to what happened to The Hobbit Trilogy, which should not have been a trilogy.

And unpopular opinion: I was never a fan of casting Depp (completely unrelated to the abuse stuff btw). So the movies lost me with the second movie and thus I didn't bother to watch the third. I might have enjoyed the Grindelwald story if it didn't start off with the Phantastic beasts story but rather it being more separated.

      TO: @@MasterMonix ...
      RE: type cast
so, if you "see" where I am coming from you understand that ~
      1) sometimes the part makes the actor & sometimes the actor creates a character. 4EX: Johnny Depp ~ he ~ he can create a character, even though he is not particularly great with dialogue vs. someone like Alan Rickman who was extraordinarily great with dialogue where he demands listening to with every syllable.
In this case, the part was so well written by JK that any not incompetent typecast child who looked the part could play the part of Harry Potter.
Dan, Mr. Radcliffe was typecast as a bright eyed little boy for which he was natural; he was indeed a bright eyed little boy with an emphasis on little. This started to show in the third film in addition to the fact that we could see that he trying to act and you could see it ~ you could see the techniques that he was using. BTW... he, Mr. Radcliffe himself tells us that this is true.
      .
      2) For me and a "few" others that I've discussed the point, Daniel's "shortcomings" came to a head in the scene where Harry goes to the court yard to reveal to Cedric that the first task is about facing a dragon. As he approaches Cedric he is “stomping” (great acting technique~barf) through the colonnade and he bumps into Ron and boom ~ all suspension of belief is lost ~ Harry is not there ~ no longer a little boy ~ little adolescent Daniel Radcliffe is there showing the world that he was no longer little Harry Potter because Harry Potter is not suppose to be so little at this point. Harry Potter is suppose to be somewhere between 5'11” and 6'1”. Rupert Grint's intensity, Ron next to Dan showed just exactly what a “gitt” that Radcliffe is by comparison.
The Harry “stomps over” (great acting~barf) to talk to Cedric and Cedric stands up to his full height and reveals the real Dan, “little” Dan ~ you know, Radcliffe in the naked without a camera angle to help his acting. Instead of a teenager, he looked and acted like a little boy. The fact is that Daniel cannot emote things from his being that are not inside his being. Sadly Radcliffe's insides, like his outsides never grew and he was doomed to spend the rest of the films, acting, acting the part of Harry Potter instead of being Harry Potter.
      .
      3) From that point forward, the movies were ruined for me and ruined for those “few” of whom I have made mention. :(
But … but, but, but … by then, we've read and RE-read the books several times. Hence, we all wanted to see what Hollywood could do; therefore we supported the movies in spite of the fact that Radcliffe stunk the movies up to the highest heaven. Emma Watson also suffers from the delusion that she is an actress when in fact her weaknesses and immaturity began to show in the same film on the stairs after the dance (but that's another story.) Only one of the “big three” maintained a consistent character and growth throughout the films ~ Rupert.
IOW... although there were quite a number of standout performances ~ compared to the material they had to work with, the films were not particularly well done ~ and the main culprit is Daniel Radcliffe, the producers, and the directors.
Nevertheless, the films were great because JK's writing and vision was so very very great that no matter who played the parts or who directed the movies ~ they were going to be a success.
Some things were great ~ the crew ~ the CGI, the props, the costumes and etc. They were half the movies.
Nevertheless, the only one that I can think of that made a huge contribution, a huge difference to the movies that wasn't already in the books by JK was ~ John Williams. Composer Maestro Williams, in my humble opinion is responsible for half of the success of the movies.
      .
Here's my parting words about Radcliffe.
Let's take a look at his most notable parts.
      .
~ “Equus” ~ he is “affectionate” with a horse.
When he asked the director for advice about what to do he was told ~ Go - - - - the horse … so he reached deep into the depths of his soul and did what the director directed.
~ “Kill Your Darlings” … once again, he looked like a little child next to DeHaan ~ who won an award for his performance.
Here, Radcliffe shows his depth of acting prowess by filming his famous “backdoor” scene.
~ “Imperium” ~ a RE-inactment of the scene with Cedric where this time as an FBI agent, he stands toe to toe with neo-Nazi and looks like the juvinille that he still is.
~ “Swiss Army Man” … an updated version of “Week-end at Bernie's”. As a half dead ~ dead person he plays his best part to date.
~ Radcliffe was in a little movie “Now You See Me 2” with Michael Caine. Radcliffe said that when he grows up he wants to be like Michael Caine. That's a joke … That's never going to happen … Here's what Caine said to Radcliffe in the movie.
WM: Dad, I promise you I will fix this.
AT: You can't. Stop calling me dad.
      There were so many women,
I have no idea whose bastard you are.
Once again, Radcliffe looked and acted like what he really is ~ a celebrity. He's not an actor. He is a celebrity ~ not because of any personal talent, but because of the genius of JK ~ and nothing else.
      .
      So …
You said, “I can see where you are coming from.”
      So …
I've explained “a little” of where I am coming from.
I have not explained how great an actor Edward John David Redmayne really is ~ but he does have an Oscar to explain all that for him.
      In other words...
Academy Award winner vs. a little child star celebrity.
Dan Radcliffe started to stop being Harry Potter during the third movie and died a sad death in the fourth.
But a lot of people were blinded by their love for the book Harry Potter and transferred that love to Radcliffe ~ and now, though he can't act, he is very popular and a very big celebrity who hasn't done much else except,
      jockey a horse,
open the back door for a guy off the street,
play a half dead zombie, and
cast as a villain in Now You See Me 2 ~ because of his celebrity ~ in which film, as a villain, he had no where near the gravitas that James Cagney brought to the screne, who is also a little man at 5'5” but a giant in the category of talent. By comparison ~ Radcliffe is no Mickey Rooney nor is he any where near an Edward G. Robinson who was also 5'5”.
      In my opinion...
Edward Redmayne not only did a better job than Radcliffe but Redmayne's Newt was deeper, more sensitive, more real, and better than any character that Johnny Depp ever created. Redmayne should have received another academy award.
      BTW …
      If you can't tell...
      I hate hero worshiping.
      But.... but, but, but
If there were a real hero here it would be JK who is responsible for everything in and about the Wizarding World ~ except the music ~ and like JK … Maestro Williams is still awesome ~ even at 90.
      So...
Did you … could you … can you
Do you see where I am coming from?
& Does it still seem like a stretch ~ or well considered & totally legitimate ???
      .
      peace.

I don't see why that would be necessary, especially when you realize that Secrets of Dumbledore only bombed because Johnny Depp wasn't in it. Newt Scamander's specific personality and skill set, and yes, the fantastic beasts, are still necessary for the story. You would have to completely rewrite Crimes of Grindelwald and Secrets of Dumbledore in order to remove those elements and still tell the same stories.
I don't think the complaints that the fantastic beasts and Newt are no longer the focus of the story and that they should be removed are valid.

I think a trick they missed out on was why Grindelwald changed his face between the 2nd and 3rd film. I think it would have been an interesting plot point that we don't know what he actually looked like, what his true motive were, who he really is, until he's defeated by Dumbledore. You could then change the actor for that role in each film and so it wouldn't seem odd that he changed between the 2nd to the 3rd.
It could tie in with their love story too, how Dumbledore is trying to get back the person that he loved but realises that just isn't possible.

  • @otherworldlyfiction
    @otherworldlyfiction Год назад +16

The main thing for me was the writing. The movies had the same problem that some super hero films have, in that they tried to cram too many storylines into one series. This can work in a book, but for me it felt like the series whole premise changed. This isn't to say I didn't want to see Dumbledore explored, but he almost needed his own movie. There could have been a duology or trilogy focused on Newt and the beasts, and then a movie or two focused on Dumbledore (in which Newt could have made a cameo). That way it would have been clear who the protagonist was (Newt or Dumbledore) and what the focus was supposed to be (the beasts or Grindelwald). Even Marvel makes a point of giving characters their own series, before mashing them together in a multi-protagonist team up.
Of course the controversies didn't help. While I think the writing was the main reason for the film's failure (as controversy alone hasn't stopped the success of Hogwarts Legacy), the controversy COULD have prevented the films from JUST squeaking by. Plenty of mediocre or disappointing films have still been finished, after all. No one calls the Transformers movies masterpieces, and Marvel has its misses, but the movies still do okay, if not great, because of fan support.
All in all, it was just a bad combination. The scripts were disappointing, and then there was anger from the fans on top of that. I still love the first film, because it was clear who and what it was about, and I loved Newt's character. However, even as a diehard Potterhead, I'll admit I haven't seen the third film yet. I was disappointed when I watched the second film (I've seen it twice now, and I definitely don't remember Lolly, and I've already forgotten why Leta Lestrange was important).
There's more I could say, but maybe I should just make my own video at this point. 😅

I am honestly so bummed by this! The movies aren't bad at all. I enjoyed watching them SO MUCH. The only reason I couldn't watch FB3 in the theatres was because of my exams. The duels, the creatures, the plot of this movie (as I later found out for myself) were REALLY good. Even the people of my Twitter feed, who hated the fact that Depp had been fired, actually seemed to love Mads' portrayal of Grindelwald. As for the mirror dimension scene, I know it was really confusing and not explained well, but there are so many things in the original Harry Potter movies that haven't been explained at all, and we needed to read the books to understand that stuff. I honestly feel that hating these movies had sort of become a trend on the internet. I don't understand why it is so hard to separate the art from the artist, especially when there are so many other people involved in it. This is so unfair to the cast and crew who had worked so genuinely hard on these movies. It's sad that we won't get to see the Epic Duel between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, and the fall of Grindelwald's tyranny. The last 2 movies would've been EPIC.😕

I am honestly disappointed that the fantastic beast series was cancelled just about halfway through its intended 5 movie story. I enjoyed all 3 of the movies, along Newt Scamander's character and role in the battle against Grindelwald, as well as many of the other main characters. I am even glad that the secrets of Dumbledore touched upon what happened between Albus, Aberforth, and Arianna, which the Harry Potter deathly hallow movies kind of glossed over. I also wish we got to see how Newt played a role in Grindelwald's final defeat, as well as the famous duel between Gellert Grindelwald and Albus Dumbledore that was considered the greatest duel in the history of the Wizarding World. At the very least, the fantastic beasts movies ended with the good guys beating the bad guys, and having a somewhat happy ending.

I'm in a bit of a mixed scene on this. I appreciate the work you do on these and that you - more than others I've seen - are able to give credit where it's due even when it conflicts with other popular opinions.
I don't think Dumbledore's relationship was what sank the franchise, nor do I think it was well foreshadowed in the existing HP books.
I am, however, in the camp that Fantastic Beasts was Newt's thing and he got sidelined in his own series to showcase Grindlewald and such. I would not have minded them continuing down a separate road... but, what about Newt? I go into Fantastic Beasts I want the Fantastic Beasts. How about showing us a young Newt just discovering his love for Magical creatures? I know that suitcase of his with its own pocket dimension didn't just apparate.
Ahh the Johnny Depp story. I had almost forgotten that. It's far too easy to "believe" that a woman is being taken advantage of by a man, but the reverse can be true and it's harder to prove. My own Uncle was physically abused by his wife for many years - something we didn't know until they were going through a divorce. Thinking "Warner Bros. DId their research" - I love your optimism there. No, I think they do knee-jerk reactions. The reason Amber Herd and Ezra still have their jobs (IMHO) is because they are hiding behind their sex and sexuality as a shield - and WB doesn't want the bad press for firing them. Yes, they've gotten plenty of bad press for keeping them on and it may be long term more detrimental than firing or at LEAST suspending them pending a full investigation, but they have decided in their limited wisdom that the immediate bad press isn't so bad. Depp is not the only victim in #metoo

Wonder how many fans hated Johnny depp for a while. Which is BS. I didn’t beleive that crap. Everyone always assumes the woman is telling the truth. Johnny Depp is almost as awesome as reeves. What happened if a wife of him accused him of that? Know one would believe it, just a totally genuine nice guy. Never thought Depp was guilty.

I've never seen any of those films, I always found it was a strange direction for the franchise to go. However, I greatly appreciate your sense of responsibility. You recognize the influence and charisma that you have, and instead of basking in it and moving others to your will, you are very careful and guarded with what you say and how you say it. That is a mark of true maturity.
So many influencers use their platform to champion their cause and push their views as if it is truth, losing themselves in that euphoric cloud of attention. \

Ya well, I paid my ticket for the first three movies and I want my final two. The movie was the 9th biggest that year. It cost 200 million to make and took in 400 million. Don't tell me 200 million went for advertisement ... and besides from the one game over a billion take in ~ spend some of that on new content and my final 2 movies.

It is a shame how Fantastic Beasts ended early and will never be able to live up to its full potential. I certainly enjoyed the ride. The first film is still one of my favs.
On the plus side, the future of the Wizarding World is looking bright again. Hogwarts Legacy was absolutely fantastic and has been a smashing success. I look forward to all of the new Wizarding World games that will spawn from it!

I really liked the first movie, since watching Newt doing Newt things with the creatures was just the best thing to me. I love stories about creature caretakers and Newt’s weird antics and obvious lack of some social skills with other people made it even better. Then I heard what the second movie was about and yeah I just pretended that the first movie was a singular film from then on. I don’t DESPISE the last two movies, but it did feel a little weird seeing a movie called FANTASTIC BEASTS be about Dumbledore and the first Wizarding War. I came here to vibe with Newt, not see a war with Grindlewald; if you wanted to do that story from the start, maybe change its name from Fantasic Beasts to like…Dumbledore and the Gay Psychopath 😂 😂, you get what I mean though. I haven’t seen CoG or SoD and don’t plan to, I am a little sad that it was canceled since I wanted to see this train wreck continue to the end, but I completely understand the lack of faith in the movies past SoD. Oh well 🤷‍♀️
Edit: Actually wait, I did see Crimes of Grindlewald with my parents, I just completely forgot the movie or my brain removed the memory and put it in cold storage. I think actually seeing CoG is what turned me off, not necessarily the word of mouth about it, although I was glad to see I wasn’t the only one who was like ‘wtf is this’. Lore-wise the movies are…interesting but otherwise I probably won’t watch any of them again except maybe the first movie and pretending it’s a one-off film

The one commonality I can see in the creation (and downfall) of The Cursed Child and the Fantastic Beasts franchise is that they were introduced as movies/ plays before the scripts were released to the public. What J.k Rowling should have done first was release actual books first rather than scripts and see how audiences received them and then okay the creation of movies much like Suzanne Collins did with her prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Personally; I enjoyed the first Fantastic Beasts film and I still think it was great as a stand alone but once it was turned into a series with the main focus on Dumbledore and Grindelwald it started losing its appeal for me, maybe because reintroducing characters I thought I knew was different than entirely new characters who were afterthoughts in the original and you could play with their stories more.

I think J.K. Rowling finishing the Fantastic Beasts series by writing 2 books to replace the final 2 movies would be a great idea. As you said, its clear that Rowling's strengths lie with writing, not movie production. Finishing the series with books would let Rowling's strengths shine through and would bring closure to all of us who were hyped up for seeing the entire series.

I was really sad when they cancelled it. I think it had a lot of potential. I totaly agree with you. This sould have been books. I think it would have solved a lot of problems ( even if we can't solve all of them, like with the people who boycott jk). I personnaly didn't liked crimes of grindelwad but I really thought Secrets of Dumbledore would save the franchise. In my opinion, this movie was really interasting. We got to learn a lot about Dumbledore and Grindelwald's relationship, Credence, Ariana, etc... and I really thought the fans would like it as much as the first fantastic beasts movie. But apparently, no. Even with the issues with actors, I think this movie deserved more consideration and appreciation. I love your videos. Thank you for all the information you give us. Although I love the movies, I can sort of see why it started to fail. The first one was great because it was about Newt, a character that although we’ve heard of, we knew very little about. It was new and exciting and it was his story. Then the series just started to become about Dumbledore and Grindelwald, with other magical creatures thrown into the story so that it could still be considered Fantastic Beast.
Not that there shouldn’t be connections between Newt and Dumbledore/Grindelwald, of course there could be. But don’t try to force and lump the two stories together.

I see the internet influencing myself as well with your videos. I always thought Goblet of Fire was a meh movie and thanks to your analysis, I realise why. I always liked Half-Blood Prince, and because of you, I realised it was because I love Romance movies and books, but the movie wasn't faithful to the novel. All these reasons caused me to view them similarly to you from a canon perspective. It is scary how the internet influences you without realising (as I only realised your influence on my thoughts now in this video when you were speaking of it).

They should have had one series where newt is off on some sort of adventure hunting down and finding the beasts... and a completely different series that involves Dumbledore. Having both plots in one story made the story dumb... the fact that they fired johnny depp but kept on fuck up Miller says something too.... they backed the wrong person and the wrong story

I enjoyed the movies. But I agree that Rowling should've written books that were later adapted. Warner Bros did jump the gun in the firing of Johnny Depp, then doubled down by not firing Amber Heard. Btw, Heard wasn't found guilty, but instead she was found liable, as it was a civil case, not a criminal case.

I don't get why she didn't just write out a novel set for these instead, obviously people were interested in Grindelwald. I didn't care about him or Dumbledore's past but personally would have liked a story on Voldemort during his time at and after Hogwarts. Who knows she might still write them since she is still invested in adding to it.

I felt that J.K. Rowling saying that there were only 2 genders was the most sane thing she could have said! The fact that the 3 main characters from Harry Potter turned on her was unforgivable. Those 3 owe their careers to Rowling!! Their lack of gratitude is the main reason I can't watch these movies anymore. Honestly where has free speech gone!?! I really liked your channel. I am a new subscriber, but now I get the same crap here? Before anyone decides to judge my comment, know that I have a gay son, grandson and a non-binary granddaughter. What she said was not only sane, but she's openly defended lesbians who were getting crap for being...lesbians (not being attracted to biological males.) She said without sex, there is no recognition of same sex attraction. I hope more people realize the serious problems coming from the gender stuff right now.

MAN do I have opinions on this.
I love Harry Potter and the Wizarding World. I’ve enjoyed all the movies and material (cursed child not withstanding). And you made many great points about the flaws these movies had.
What I think also drew people away from these movies was the lack of “kids go to the Wizarding school”. That’s what made the series so big back in the day. We were kids reading about kids going to hogwarts. It was awesome. And while a select group like me and you grew up and love seeing places like they show off in the fantastic beasts movies, the more general, wider audience just doesn’t care. It’s not relatable.
I’d love to see a whole new take on hogwarts. Movies about the Marauders. Or brand new characters we’ve never seen. Maybe there’s just one kid who’s really obsessed with Quiditch and that’s the premise. Idk. Might help. Either way I hope they do SOMETHING with the IP.
