  • Was the Titanic accidentally turned the wrong way? Lightoller's granddaughter, Louise Patten, and many others have made the claim that Titanic was steered in the wrong direction. I take a look at the claim that a fatal steering error actually caused the sinking of the Titanic!

    I think where people get confused is when they relate a ship to a car. A ship steers like a car in reverse. Hard a starboard will turn a ship's bow to the left, but the stern is still moving forward on the original path. Turning the wheel to center will steer the ship on the new heading. A full turn in the opposite direction will swing the stern around. Hence the intention to "port round" the berg. The commands were absolutely correct, there was just not enough time to complete the maneuver.

    I've been so curious as to why Titanic didn't capsize so that shifted coal from the bunker fire made sense. It really saved her from having the same fate as Lusitania, Andrea Doria, Britannic, and the modern day Titanic, Costa Concordia.

      Lusitania also suffered the awful fate of the torpedo hitting near or at the coal bunker and boilers
      Had it just been the torpedo strike, I'd hope they would've had longer then 18 minutes but the secondary explosion from the boilers and/or coal dust really accelerated her demise

    I’ve been fascinated by Titanic since I was five in 1994. Your channel is super fun for the long-dormant part of me that nerds out over this disaster. Thanks for educating us!

    Just stumbled across this. I can't help but wonder, if it had been an absolute worse case scenario with 0 survivors, how long would it have taken for people to find out? I assume ships would pass by debris fields or maybe they would have had time to get a distress call out. As horrific as it was, it is even more chilling to think it could have gone down without anyone surviving or witnessing it.

    • @generaltophat5877
      @generaltophat5877 Год назад +1

      The first distress calls went out about 30 or so minutes after hitting the berg so most ships with wireless still on knew about her sinking. There have however been liners previously to just disappear though. If you are interested I recommend Part Time Explorer's video on the disappearance of the Collins Liner "S.S. Pacific"

    With the ship listing 2.5 degrees to port due to the placement of the coal, wouldn’t a hard turn to port turn also been less effective?

    Truth went down with the ship. This error is always going to be a matter of speculation. With that said stress does cause people to do things they normally wouldn't do . Tragic event regardless of what happened.

    Yep tillers commands glad you cleared it up alot of people think it's a mistake

  • @boatscum
    @boatscum 2 года назад +1

    Yes Hitchens was responding to what were called at the time tiller commands turning to the opposite of the way the rudder was being turned a hold over from the days of sail. Yes she did turn the wrong way. She was a triple screw ship with 2 right hand turning screws and only 1 left hand one. As a prop turns it throws water off the top as well as pushes it astern. This produces a quicker turn to the right as opposed to the left turn she did. As a former Captain of triple screw vessels I know this cause you have a strong walking side and a poor walking side (walking is makeing the vessel go sideways) this is because you have more torque coming off in a right direction than a left which will turn your vessel to the right faster than the left.

      I would tend to take your comments more seriously than those who have not commanded a ship. I'm sure someday research will validate your claim. Arm chair captains seem to theorize from lack of actual experience.. thanks for your post.

    Not sure if this has been asked but would the Titanic have missed the berg if Murdoch didn't order full astern? And just kept hard over instead.

    It was not, those are called “tiller commands” and it switches starboard and port, so, no, it was not turned the wrong way.

    All depends on which direction the Iceberg is drifting. If it drifts left into the Titanic then Titanic could have exacerbated the damage it sustained by going the same way the Iceberg was drifting.
    So how fast does an Iceberg move in strong currents? It can move as fast as 2MPH. Titanic had 30 seconds. So Hard to Port, Full A Stern and the berg might pass. 2 MPH is around 80 ft in 30 seconds. And say the titanic only turns 20 ft. Could have cleared all of the berg. Who knows. The ocean was very calm that night so the berg could have been moving as slow as .8 MPH.
    Thanks for the hypotheticals.
    Enjoy the videos, Dude.
