David Yael I don’t remember exactly where I originally heard it since it’s been a while but it’s not like it’s a secret the band speaks about it and it’s in the subtext of the song and video.
It’s not really a disputed fact that’s what the song is about it’s just a lot of upbeat songs get dark subtext ignored.

Man if this is true it makes all these dumb fucking people’s deaths so much funnier to me this will forever be the song I associate with them. I laughed when I saw it in 97 when it was on the news, still fucking alive and laughing.
Ohhhhhhh the "I heard they all wear white" line made me think it was about being cult-recruted by members of the kkk! I didn't hear of Heaven's gate until years after discovering this song and never made the connection. Thanks!

This is my first time actually watching the music video.....man I really thought this was just a lighthearted song about a lonely kid who's befriended by a group of troublemaking but friendly kids...

A good friend of mine sent me her thoughts. The Heavens Gate Cult who thought they were going to beamed up to a spaceship that was riding in the tail of a comet, poisoned themselves. It happened, in 1997. =) She has a better memory than me.

This song is really sad more than creepy in a way. It’s like in the first verse they’re talking about the people they met in the cult and how happy they are to have them as friends, and then the second verse is as if they didn’t go through with the suicide and were just left isolated and traumatized by all of their friends offing themselves.
There were people who escaped the cult before the mass suicide.
Death by lounge act! Lol ;) We were supposed to be Marty and Elaine a famous LA lounge act found in the movie “Swingers”. I got to play the part of Marty. ;) A/J and guys were amazing to work with and a special shout out to Greg for allowing me to play his set, yes I actually played the song. Lol ... this remains one of the best things I’ve ever got to do in LA as an actor. Many thanks 🙏 to DJ Brawner and Saint Motel .

That piano melody in the intro makes me feel melancholy, I think they did it on purpose.

I don’t know why but this has become my new happy song, when ever I feel down I know this song is there and all the memories laughed at the news that day, I honestly had forgotten that for some horrible but for me and my world I discovered this thing vagina and I knew life was worth living and not mass suicide as any option.
