I like to think that the man is really married to a mermaid, and the lines at the end are actually saying 'Wake up, wake up' because the fisherman is having a nightmare about his wife leaving him when in reality she's right there and loves him despite their differences. I'm also a big fan of happy endings lmao.
yeah, I understood it that way too! It's a song about dreams after all, it's quite logical to put a "it was all a dream" twist at the end :) I mean sure, there's the option of him only dreaming of a better reality at the end, but... I like happy endings
Hate to be the guy that brings the negativity but I think this could be something like Inception: at the end, he thought he wakes up but the reality is he is dying and what we see is simply a figment of his imagination, conjured up by his brain as he is suffering from hypoxia, since he is thrown into the ocean and let to drown by his cheating wife. I think this might be the case as I think the mismatched detail at the end really hints at his brain losing grip on reality. In the Little Mermaid story, I think the mermaid had to switch from tail to leg to live on land. However, here, we see that his wife has a tail still, which does not make sense. Thus, this mismatch might be indicative of illogical thinking, which is prevalent in oxygen-deprived brains. That's my 1.5 cents, make of it what you will lol
It's in the ions, ions, ions, ions. Depending the amount will result in a negative or positive charge, attracting or repelling...brilliant analogy in this song, as well as sounding beautiful.
To me the song tells a story of a sailor who loves the sea and his wife. The sea returns his love but his wife doesn't and in fact cheats on him with another man. When the sailor returns to his house, he sees the two together and in his anger attacks the man, but his wife knocks him out and then together, the sailor's wife and her lover dump him in the sea. The sailor has always loved the sea, and the sea has loved him, so she gives him another chance at life, another chance at love. He is reborn now with someone he loves, and someone who loves him back, ie the mermaid. It's a really beautiful song...
It really is beautiful, and I read an article about the video's animator, Sidsel Sorensen. While she didn't explain what happens after the husband gets home unexpectedly, she did say that St Motel were really pleasant to work with and that the song's lyrics were open for interpretation. She wanted a sea theme, and she built one around Fano Island and the fishermen and their wives. The husbands were often at sea for long periods, earning a living, and some of the wives had 'company' then. They often had the pair of dog statues in the window, and based on how these were positioned, a lover would know if the husband was away at sea or not.
I wonder how much music there is and was out there that we haven't heard But you know, not just music, but movies, books, and just anything in life that we haven't been exposed to and or experienced It makes me wonder how much I'm missing out on How many points of view, how many perspectives, how many opinions, how we are influenced by all our surroundings It's a trip when you think about it That's all I've got, goodbye and have a good one
Statistically, more than you can fit in a lifetime even if you listened to new music 24/7. While it sucks that you'll likely miss out on some really great music here and there, it also means you'll never run out of new experiences.
Lyrics: It's in the ions, ions, ions, ions It's in the ions, ions, ions, ions It's in the ions, ions, ions, ions I could die a happy man if I could be with you Behind this eyes, I believe fantasies can come true It's in the ions, ions, ions, ions It's in the ions, ions, ions, ions Find the time to be the man that you like to talk to In dreams it seems, I can be anyone you want me to It's in the ions, ions, ions, ions It's in the ions, ions, ions, ions Love me, hold me Find me, on the off-beat Hold my hand, say I'm your man Take me down to the promised land Oohh Ohhhh Oohh Ohhhh Sunlight, moonbeams Your hands inside my dreams Hold me close, don't let go The promised land, away we go Oohh Ohhhh Oohh Ohhhh Oohh Ohhhh Oohh Ohhhh Home is where the heart is Down by the neighbor kids Back where we use our given names Sweet, sweet curiosity Led me to this here street Please don't make this go away Don't wake up, wake up, wake up Here, we can do as we please Ohhh living free Oh take it day by day Sweet, sweet curiosity Led me to this here street Please don't make this go away Don't wake up, wake up, wake up Don't wake up, wake up, wake up Don't wake up, wake up, wake up
I’m a meaningless RUclips commentator, but I’d just like to get out there that I think that this song (not necessarily just the music video) demonstrates simple narrative tropes that fit incredibly well into and are essentially revived by its three-part structure as a pan-emotional journey through ones own perception. People say that you could split this song into three, but I think it works so damn well because it IS three songs and that it seamlessly, thematically blends together into one emotional narrative.
Am I wrong to think that in the ending she remains a mermaid because he is still "asleep"? The "don't wake up" part makes me think he hasn't woken up because he's dead.
And it symbolizes his love with the sea, and I believe his neglect of her romantically (why she cheated on him), because he loves the ocean too much, but also loves her. He got the best of both worlds when she turned into a mermaid.
I had a dream of our brake up, twice.. i didnt believe it until it happen. she left me for someone else. then i started having nightmares of it and would wake up late at night with my heart pounding in my chest. she was my first and we lasted for 8yrs. but its more than a year now and i have moved on but somewhere inside me still wants her. guess i just have to live with it.
Leslie D. I'm actually not sure it ever goes away, if someone was such an important part of your life, it will always have a place in your heart. But for me at least, keeping on living took me to other people and I'm happy as fuck in this point in time, so don't try to erase it, just keep going and you will find happines
Man, what a beautiful song. The song arrangement reminds of The Beatles with the interesting breaks and the added, unexpected piece at the end that did not even need to be added but when added makes it a classic. This song will be listened to by folks 100 years from now, it's that good. Saint Motel makes some crap songs too, but they hit a grand slam with this one which many artists will never achieve in a lifetime of trying,
the more i listen to saint motel, the more i feel like they have been with me throughout my life up until today. their sound has this nostalgic quality that i really like and i'm disappointed that i found them on 2020 but just started listening to their other stuff just recently. better late than never i guess?
Beautiful animation, and really different idea to add the Staffordshire dog statues. When her lover passed the house, he'd see the direction they were facing, and know her husband was away at sea.
Wow. Stunning song and stunning video. After I saw the song on a TikTok ad for real estate, I looked up the video. Both the song and the video are mind blowing and very emotional.
I don't think any of them are what's actually happening. They're all dreams as suggested by the title. The first is the nightmare, the next the wet dream, and the last the daydream. Maybe the reality is a mix of all of them.
This song is a true gem through and through, but honestly, the first minute and a half of this song is so catchy, I literally just repeat it a few times before actually listening to the entire song.
I know there's a lot of this from the fisherman's point of view, but first watch on this I immediately took it to be a metaphorical selkie-story. Legends usually go that if a fisherman can steal a selkie's skin, not only can he take away their ability to transform, the selkie is also forced to marry them. The whole concept of the song has to do with dreams. I could only think that the fisherman looks at his marriage through rose-tinted glasses, and the woman is trapped in the marriage. She makes the most of it and ends up falling in love with someone else. Tiny things, like how happy and "free" she looks as soon as the sailor leaves, or the twin swallow tattoos (signifying a sailor coming "home") make me think that is the case. Not to mention the fisherman nearly kills the guy, which may be understandable but is still like, murder. The mermaid bit at the end makes me think either is his dream come true - that he has the perfect selkie-mermaid-wife - and her nightmare, or maybe a happier version where her being a selkie symbolizes her being who she wants to be and him finally understanding he has to let her be a little free. But that's just my two cents.
Im sure theres also something about the fact that mermaid were originally widows of sailors dead at sea but I dont know how to place that piece of the puzzle
you know what? I think the wife actually had an affair and when the husband found out he was killed. Then he wakes up next to his wife, making it seem like it was all a dream, but then we see the mermaid tail and there's the lyrics of "don't wake up" which suggests he never woke up/is dead.
The old legend of sirens is that they sing an enchanting song that lures them into their death. As a sailor, his definition of heaven is the sea. Obviously she was done with him and so in his next life... he finds her again. But it’s full circle
I love when she is get ready and like this whole new rhythm is on ... Like every time the beat slows down the new subject is on First daydream the wet dream then nightmare

@@pennypay1 that is quite interesting...

I love this theory :)
This could be three separate songs and all of them would be amazing
the final one is my favorite

Damn.
Really bro, what meaningful thought provoking messages don't get to us thanks to the mind numbing amount of soulless content that we consume?
Amazing cos I've thought of this exactly a long time ago.
Statistically, more than you can fit in a lifetime even if you listened to new music 24/7. While it sucks that you'll likely miss out on some really great music here and there, it also means you'll never run out of new experiences.
I thought I was stupid to think this way from a very young age.... But it's not that stupid I guess 😛
God I love that middle section from 1:40 - 3:11. I need an extended version of just that.
neocrash89 The Wetdream segment

"Sweet Talk" on the new album has a similar sound
Lyrics:
It's in the ions, ions, ions, ions
It's in the ions, ions, ions, ions
It's in the ions, ions, ions, ions
I could die a happy man if I could be with you
Behind this eyes, I believe fantasies can come true
It's in the ions, ions, ions, ions
It's in the ions, ions, ions, ions
Find the time to be the man that you like to talk to
In dreams it seems, I can be anyone you want me to
It's in the ions, ions, ions, ions
It's in the ions, ions, ions, ions
Love me, hold me
Find me, on the off-beat
Hold my hand, say I'm your man
Take me down to the promised land
Oohh Ohhhh
Oohh Ohhhh
Sunlight, moonbeams
Your hands inside my dreams
Hold me close, don't let go
The promised land, away we go
Oohh Ohhhh
Oohh Ohhhh
Oohh Ohhhh
Oohh Ohhhh
Home is where the heart is
Down by the neighbor kids
Back where we use our given names
Sweet, sweet curiosity
Led me to this here street
Please don't make this go away
Don't wake up, wake up, wake up
Here, we can do as we please
Ohhh living free
Oh take it day by day
Sweet, sweet curiosity
Led me to this here street
Please don't make this go away
Don't wake up, wake up, wake up
Don't wake up, wake up, wake up
Don't wake up, wake up, wake up

Will always be my favorite Saint Motel song. Sad they don't play it live as often anymore.
Played it live in their tour 💖

no i agree with you too. i think he "died" and ended up with the mermaid, who symbolizes how his wife was in the past.
And it symbolizes his love with the sea, and I believe his neglect of her romantically (why she cheated on him), because he loves the ocean too much, but also loves her. He got the best of both worlds when she turned into a mermaid.
Same and it makes me really sad. he didn't deserve that, he clearly really loved his wife and the bitch not only cheated on him but she killed him!
I think that she killed him and threw him to the sea, that could explain those dreams at the nigthmare part
He is literally sleeping with the fishes. He's gone.
I am so happy I stumbled upon this band yesterday.... Better late than never!
lol... They are bigger than ever now.
