Almost by definition "Rock 'n' Roll" is about rocking the boat, rolling some stones - and kicking some ass. This song and video by John Cougar Mellencamp embodies everything I love about my favorite genre of music and of the human spirit.
When I fight authority it doesn’t always win, My family has a history of bucking authority and winning by the grace of God, I been doing that since I was a young kid and come out winning when God, Daddy, Momma, and my sisters and nephews and thier families got my back. however this songs’ got a talented singer and band and still rocks.
Huh? This is a song about his record company at the time. But anyway... In polite society we do what we're told when we're told. Unless were talking about abuse of power from police and won in court (and by that i mean an unlawful beating and winning restitution)?
@@lt200420 Not talking about that either. I’m talking about standing up for what you believe in period and my own family history that goes way back and loving my family. Just my thoughts at the moment from the song. Music and art inspire thoughts and we all should keep thinking and being thankful for the ones that got us here.
I'm mostly a punk rock kind of guy, but this song has always been inspirational to me. I feel like it's one of those songs that captures the anti-authority punk rock ethos, but sneaks it in with a catchy blues-rock sound that more people will hear. And in a way, that makes it even more subversive and effective.
@Mark Berenger it's nice to meet you and to be COMPLETELY honest i am were and will be REALLY REALLY selective with country since it LITERALLY always has been REALLY LOW in TALENT and i did do and/or PROBABLY will EQUALLY really LOVE rock metal and punk
This song came out when I was 13. I don't know if it's me or the feeling of this music, but when I feel old, tired, and cynical, I play this and recall what it was to be young and idealistic. We get distracted by the business of life (as Authority wants us to be, so we don't pay attention to what it's doing). That distraction cost us a lot under Bush, and so I'm listening to this more and more these days, just to stay vigilant. Keep fighting authority, people.
John you are a legend in your own time and I love every song you have ever sung. And I really like to watch you dance. Would have loved to have seen you live!!!
Yes, , this characterised American spirit in 84 when President was Reagan and previous one was Nixon BUT NOT in Trump's America because that authority was different. r/iamverysmart
Also: "I don't trust the government,” Mellencamp said in a 2016 interview with Rolling Stone. “I don't trust the Democrats. I don't trust the Republicans. I'm a little bit more Democratic than I am Republican, but really I'm a socialist." What a way to misappropriate a song just because you thought it agreed with you. Woof.
This was playing as I was going through the grocery store yesterday. (You know you’re old when it’s your own generation’s songs in the grocery store.) This is the kind of song that gets you up off your butt and makes you move. It makes you feel alive. Great song that really rocks and has an awesome beat.
I grew up to this. will always love it. especially since my dad passed.. reminds me of him
Thx
John Mellencamp is the coolest thing that ever walked out of Indiana.
Besides me!!!! Lol
I am from northwest Indiana and love John!!! Lol
And now the little baby who walked off stage...
This liberal hack??
Second to the greatest Indiana idol of all time and one of Mellencamp's idols...James Dean.
Ponía este disco en los 80 continuamente. I'm from Spain.
Oh man the memories ☺️❤
Hello Carolyn
How're you doing today
Comment like this are priceless
Thank God
It's a pleasure meeting you❤ here
I hear this song in my head all the time; never gets old
Almost by definition "Rock 'n' Roll" is about rocking the boat, rolling some stones - and kicking some ass.
I saw him in concert years ago and his music and lyrics are so energizing and powerful that I want to move shout and dance just as I did then!
Fantastic rocker from his 1983 album released as a single in 1984 !!!
The 80's brought me here...
Badass song. REAL MUSIC.
That man can put a tune together..
I'd love to hear it redone punk...alternative,maybe clash
it's nice to meet you and to be COMPLETELY honest i did do and/or PROBABLY will EQUALLY really LOVE rock and metal
See I love the anti government message of punk but hates its style of music. Much prefer the bluesy sound. 😂
You’re so dark and moody and mysterious Todd.
Have loved this guy since start of career.fav song..Minutes to Memories
thanks John for a great song, I hope this new generation keeps fighting for the working man.
You still fighting authority 13 years later?
😂t😮6
Listening to him always puts me in a good mood! I like looking at him too, especially now that's he's older...HANDSOME!
This song never ages!
This is the PUNK ROCK STORY of my life
One of the catchiest songs ever. I can play this over and over and over again.
takes me to high school....1985.....dang...these were the years.....and yes...they always won.
Always loved this song. It's been decades since I've heard it! 😍
music has been part of my life, my daily living I breathe music 🌹🎻🌹🎻, thanks for your love and support, I have you mostly to be thankful for 🌹🎻❤️🌹🎻
John you are a legend in your own time and I love every song you have ever sung. And I really like to watch you dance. Would have loved to have seen you live!!!
Great rocking song. John Mellencamp put out some really good music in the 80's.
This song once characterized the American Spirit. That same Spirit bearing a helluva shiner and a chip on the shoulder. I miss ya America.
This🇺🇸
not
This🇨🇳
I will fight authority until the day that I die 💯
I miss this America 🇺🇸 too!!!!!
Yes, , this characterised American spirit in 84 when President was Reagan and previous one was Nixon BUT NOT in Trump's America because that authority was different. r/iamverysmart
Also:
"I don't trust the government,” Mellencamp said in a 2016 interview with Rolling Stone. “I don't trust the Democrats. I don't trust the Republicans. I'm a little bit more Democratic than I am Republican, but really I'm a socialist."
What a way to misappropriate a song just because you thought it agreed with you. Woof.
Always loved all his songs. Awesome singer and person. I met him several time in Bloomington Indiana or Browncounty. Very friendly.
John hit #14 in Billboard, 5-19-84. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!
Big shout out in heaven to Ryan White . Been since April 1990 that he passed. We will always remember you . AUTHORITY ❤️❤️😢😢
Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh from Peru
This was playing as I was going through the grocery store yesterday. (You know you’re old when it’s your own generation’s songs in the grocery store.) I couldn’t help but bounce and sing my way along. I am still fighting authorities - with less free time but more experience. My most recent tiny battle is the HOA, which is trying to prevent installation of solar panels on my roof. How backward is that! Thank you, John Cougar Mellencamp, for recharging my emotional reserves! You’re playing a vital role.
one of the best rockabilly songs
Charles?
Wow! I hope I'm not the only 15 year old girl who thinks John is just so cute here and his music KICKS ASS! I hope to see him live soon, he is on tour. I've never seen him before.
In college, when the DJ threw this on, the dancefloor was packed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of John's best works. I used to be an "authority fighter," but now I'm older so I can only balk authority now and then. Peace y'all!
Don't give up the fight
makes me wanna dance 😊
Michele Rodriguez would you dance with me Michelle
Are you ? What? Just say unicorn 😂
Lol thats because the intro sounds borrowed from Foot loose!

Saw him 7 times! He always rocked!
This song is about my total existence.
Yeah? Any examples of when you fought authority and they won? Just curious
Tomorrow would have been my moms 87th birthday. She hasn't even been gone 6 months and I'm still devastated.
I'm so sorry. My dad passed away October 30th,one month ago,he was also 87.
I can't imagine my mother passing away, she is 84. I just can't believe my dad is gone.
How long has it been, my friend.... So many years now and when I hear this song it hurts like it did the day you died...
Saw him once late 90s early 2000´s in the small venue in MSG, (Paramount?). The best concert I ever saw. Thanks JCM
Damn i am blessed as a child.
This what my mom and i would listen to music. Till the sun came up
Funny what to day bring.
Memory i can't wait for her to get out.
Happy 2020 fourth of July from phx,AZ
Never give up the good fight. Thank you John Mellencamp.
