  • MY FIRST YEAR RESIDENCE EXPERIENCE AT UBC
    Heyooo!!
    I'm back with a longer video for you guys! We're taking a stroll down good ol' memory lane. I thought it would be nice to reflect on my time living in Place Vanier as my first year residence experience is now over :( and I am sad about it and I want to relive the glory days!
    Living in first year residence was a whirlwind, exciting, exhausting, adventurous and just... holy moly... an experience! If first year residence is something you're not sure about, even if you're not sure about living in Place Vanier specifically, watch this!! Maybe I'll change your mind :) Hopefully for the better!
    Remember, everyone's experience is going to be different. Mine my was a product of who I am, what I like to do, and how I prioritize things. Your's might be similar or the polar opposite. It's up to you to make it what you want it to be!
    Stay tuned for a video where you'll get to listen to me rant all about first year in general. There's a lot to say about that one for sure.
    If you have any questions feel free to leave a comment below or send me an email: itsmemaddya@gmail.com

    🐟🐟 I am absolutely loving your videos!! I’m thinking of applying to UBC but I’ve never liked the idea of residence. Can u make a video comparing off-campus housing and residence? Maybe pros and cons? And if also love if you could include good places to live bc of the commute. I’m not quite sure how Vancouver work bc I’m from Manitoba. Thanks a bunch and stay safe :)

    Hi Maddy, loved this vid! 🐟 I was just wondering how u got used to the bathroom situation/sharing a bathroom with other people on your floor? That’s kinda one of my main concerns as a neat freak lol haha!

    • @MaddyA
      @MaddyA  4 года назад +7

      Hi! Thank you :) Glad you liked it!
      Honestly, I kind of told myself to get over it... and I'm a neat freak too! But I was never super bothered by it oddly enough. I have a VERY messy younger brother so... that was my training ground when it came to sharing spaces with other people haha. In part, the girls on my floor were really clean and never left a mess in the bathroom so it didn't feel like there were other people using it. They do clean the bathrooms everyday and do a deep clean twice a week so it never really gets super gross. Don't worry too much about it :) It's not as bad as it seems!

    Hello! 👋 I recently had the chance of getting to know your channel in light of hope as I was pluming down into an endless round of sorrow after I repeatedly thought to myself that I could never make it to UBC, and it is until very very recently that I got my admission to the university. Coincide? I don’t know, but I do want to say that I appreciate what you do for people. The way you talk about your experiences is fun to watch, but more importantly, it gives someone like me a bit of a better perspective as to what to expect as a UBC student, and that is honestly price. I love your content and keep up with the great work! I hope you stay safe during these uncertain and indeed strange times.

      I have a whole series about how to prepare your personal profile! At least for UBC's application, that's I can really help you with as the rest is logistical stuff. You've still got some time before you need to start thinking about your application for the 2021 year!

    Hi! Thank you so much for this video , it had a lot of helpful information : ) I just had a quick question - I'm going into my first year this fall , but because of COVID-19, they're only accepting a limited amount of students with compelling reasons for residence for first year meaning I'd have to study at home - nothing has been decided for Term 2 yet, and I'm not sure if I want to wait and see if they'll open up residence starting second term, or if I just want to find a place off-campus with a friend, as that was my plan for second year anyway. Would you say that by living off campus, I would miss out a lot on the social aspect? I don't want to be missing out on opportunities of meeting people and spending more time with them , but if it's not THAT different and would still have chances to spend time with friends, I would consider living off campus. Ahh sorry for the long comment , but the experiences and information you shared in the video was super helpful , and was wondering if you could give a little bit of an insight, since you've already finished your first year : ) Thank you!

    • @MaddyA
      @MaddyA  4 года назад +1

      Hello!!
      Of course :) I'm glad you found it so helpful!
      I totally understand where you are coming from - I had to give up my residence room for next year so I'm currently trying to find a place off-campus too! Honestly, it kind of comes down to what you make of the opportunities presented to you. You can live on residence, but if you are not going to go out, only study, and keep to yourself... which is perfectly and what I did most of the time... it makes no difference if you are on campus or off. I know plenty of people who lived off campus who made friends through their classes and spent almost all day, everyday on campus hanging out and studying. Home for them was literally just a place to shower and sleep haha. There is definitely a lot of convenience in living on campus because everything is right there, and if you want to go out, it's really easy which is something I loved about it. There are opportunities for any student, either on or off campus, it's just a matter of convenience and whether or not those are opportunities you want to take!
      I hope that helps a little bit?

    Thank you so much!! It was so helpful! I'm still deciding whether to go or not to UBC, since I live in Brazil! It is a hard decision, because I would leave my family and friends, and I wouldn't be able to "come home", as you said in the video. But at the same time, I think it may worth the experience of living alone in a new country and excellent university, making new friends... Maybe it's better that just living normal life here in Rio de Janeiro and going to university here. What do you think? Thank you :)

    • @julianajanot4280
      @julianajanot4280 4 года назад

      And I have other questions: a) Does UBC's residences have a hall where the floor/residence's mates can hangout? Because that could help not feeling alone most of the time in your bedroom, right? b) Does UBC have rules for co-ed residences? Or it is all permitted? About people sleeping in the same bedroom and stuff? Just curiosity, because those type of things we don't actually read about in the UBC website, only watch in movies haha

    • @MaddyA
      @MaddyA  4 года назад +1

      a) There is a floor lounge on each floor in each building for anyone living in Vanier. Each house also has a house lounge on the first floor. I believe I talk a little bit about in one of my videos... can’t remember which one though! b) all the same rules apply to same gender houses as co-Ed houses. They break down exactly what those rule are in the residence contract, but there isn’t anything that prevents you from having someone in your room or staying over for a night You just can’t have someone stay in your room for extended periods of time... again all this is available in the residence contract. Hope that helps!

    • @MaddyA
      @MaddyA  4 года назад +1

      It is completely up to you! Wherever you choose to go, you will have the opportunity to create something for yourself. At the end of the day, you need to consider what is most important to you and what makes sense for your family, your education, and personal goals. If it’s something you want to explore, do your research and see if UBC, Vancouver, and Canada are the places you want to be!

      I could give a couple recommendations, whether against res policy or not, if you're interested

    • @MaddyA
      @MaddyA  4 года назад +2

      Unfortunately either on or off campus, rent is very expensive. Vancouver is not an affordable place to live so finding housing that is within your budget is usually pretty difficult. If you have relatives, or friends in Vancouver who could help you find a place through people they know, that would probably be the best way to find a more affordable option.

    Do you get to pick what residence you get to live in? If not is there a way to boost your chances to get the residence you want?

    • @MaddyA
      @MaddyA  2 года назад +1

      You can rank your choices, but it is not a guarantee you will get what you want. There isn't anything you can do to boost your chances - room assignment is completely random.

    • @MaddyA
      @MaddyA  4 года назад +1

      Thank you! I met a lot of people in term one as well, but only found a group I really really connected with in term two. I had a very close group from highschool by my side the whole, but I guess when I say I "met a lot of people" I mean I made more friends. I was lucky enough to know a large group of people going to UBC from my school, but doing Jumpstart also really helped - our learning communities were broken up based on our faculty so all the friends I made from that were in quite a few of my classes! I honestly wouldn't say its hard, but I had Jumpstart as a foundation, so I might be a bit biased.

    • @MaddyA

      Hi! It usually is a girls bathroom and guys bathroom, although in some cases, you can vote to have them be gender neutral. On my floor we kept it girls and boys (which i recognize isn't entirely inclusive), but that is what most people felt comfortable with.
