The brand is Arctic King but I am not sure of what the actual fridge model is. If you google the brand it’s one of the first fridges to pop up I think!
Since I’m planning to go the UBC in the fall, one of the major concerns I had was the communal bathrooms. Was it inconvenient for you at times like imagine going outside at 3 in the morning just to pee or emergency situations 😓. Also, because the buildings are far from each other and they only give you ten minutes to walk to your next class, how do you manage this?
Hi Chloe!! I personally was not all to bothered by the communal washrooms. The girls on my floor were super friendly, clean, and organized so it never felt weird or gross in the bathrooms. At times yeah it was a bit convenient... there definitely was an adjustment period. There was a solid week where I was up at like 1 am every night to run to the but 1) you get used to it and 2) once you've adjusted to dorm living that kind of stops. A huge part of planning your classes is planning them based on how far apart they are. Currently, UBC is exploring potentially increasing that time but for now it's still 10 minutes. You can make it pretty far pretty quickly if you walk fast and are strategic in your planning. Google maps was my best friend when planning my courses! Hope that helps :)
Hi Lara! There is a brand of tape called command strips - they essentially are double-sided velcro tape that can hold heavier objects to the walls like photos!
Thanks for the informative video. I have two questions. Firstly, should people who live in residence get a renter insurance? Secondly, where should we find which books are needed for our classes and where we can find the pdf of books?
Hi! Of course! I never had it. I think that is a personal choice. UBC won't cover any lost, damaged, or stolen items. If you want that to be protected then getting renters insurance is a good idea. I actually just got it this morning and its quite reasonable in price! Textbooks can be found at the UBC Bookstore or sometimes you can find pdf versions online. Students are pretty on top of that so I am sure you will know about where to get free/cheaper versions of the same book. Keep your ears open for that come the fall!
Hi! I brought my own - twin XL I believe! UBC does have a program though, that provides you with bedsheets for first-year residence. Can't remember if you need to pay or not but there is a way to opt-in for that!
Hey Maddy, I have 2 questions: a) at UBC can you drink water from the sink? I don't really know how that works in Canada haha b)Is there a kitchen in the residence hall? or everything you eat at UBC is actually made by somebody else or industrialized snacks? thank youuu
Hi! Yes you can drink form the sink at UBC. Almost anywhere you go in Canada, the water is safe to drink. There are lots of water fountains on campus though so you don't have to drink from the sink. There are small "kitchens" on each of the floor lounges. They only have a sink, fridge, and microwave. They don't trust students with stoves... you can't really cook stuff, but you can certainly get creative. I made a lot of my own food (breakfast, lunch, and snacks).Come the fall, I am not too sure what that will look like with COVID. I don't think all floor lounges will be open and I think the dining halls will have limited hours and all meals will be pre-packaged... I could be wrong but that is what I have been told.
Hi! I was assigned to Ritsumeikan and I’m thinking if I should switch to totem park c̓əsnaʔəm single coz I’m worried about communal washroom (especially I feel a bit awkward going to the washroom with my puffy face and messed up hair in the morning) and also I heard there’s lots of bugs in Rits so it might be better with newer building? What would you choose? I’m having a hard time choosing between this🤦♀️
Hi! I believe some units in Rits have their own washrooms, but I could be mistaken. Unfortunately, once you have been assigned a room, there isn't much you can do to switch. You can search through the UBC housing forum and see if anyone is willing to make that switch but it is not a guarantee.
I had communal washrooms in my first year and honestly, I didn't mind it! I thought it would bother me more but you get comfortable with your floor mates pretty quickly! This is different for everyone, and you see it all lol - many people with bed head half awake wander from their room to the bathroom, others are put together and ready to start their day! Honestly, no one really pays attention! Hope that helps :)
Each residence building has multiple floor lounges, in which there is a fridge and sink. You are able to each your dishes there! You usually need to have your own soap, towel, and scrub brush or whatever you use.
Hi! I won’t go into too much detail but my parents and I found a way to split the cost that works for us! Extra expenses (like most of my dorm stuff/dinners out/social things/and certain school things) were understandably my own expenses.
Really great video - now that graduation appears to be cancelled I guess the next step for me is to think about dorms and going off to university in the next 6 months 🤭 I do have a question, I was just wondering what your whole application experience was with UBC bc I applied for science back in November and still haven’t heard back yet - I was just wondering if you could tell me how the whole process worked for you?? Thank you so so much🤗🤗
I’m so sorry about your graduation :( it’s a very weird time to be “going” to school. We all want this pandemic to be done!! For me I had a slightly different application process because I also did the B+MM. So I wrote my personal profile and submitted that in December as well as the video essay for Sauder. I didn’t hear back until about mid-late March. I think in part that was because I had to be evaluated in two different faculties and then admitted to two different programs. I didn’t actually get an email saying I had been admitted until end of March - I actually found out by logging into my SSC and saw that I had a notification... it was a bit weird! It wasn’t particularly streamline and it was definitely a bit stressful. Hopefully that’s helps a bit?
Maddy A oh ok thank you!! Hopefully I’ll hear back soon then :) do you know the latest that ppl usually get offers? Also can you get offers over the weekend? Thank you sm sorry for all the questions
@@kpoptimes5826Of course! I am not sure if they send out emails over the weekend. I also don't totally know when they send out the final rounds of acceptances. I'm for the best for you!
Your videos are super concise and helpful! I love them! 😍😍
does the tape you use to hang up your photos on the wall peel the wallpaper off or damage the walls in any way ? is just regular scotch tape fine ?
what exact model/brand of mini fridge did you get? :)

Maddy A ahhh okay. Were the communal a usually busy in the mornings/evenings? It’s just these things that I’m super worried about 😂.
Hi, Maddy! I love your videos and I was wondering: how do you stick the photos on the wall? Do you have a special tape that won't ruin the wall?

Ahhh! Love the dorm!
Omg yess I love this
Does UBC provide pillows?
No! Only bed linens if you ask for them/buy them.
Do the dorm rooms have air conditioning?
No they don't. Honestly though, if you keep your window open just a bit it has the same effect - there is usually some kind of cool breeze on campus!

Each residence building has multiple floor lounges, in which there is a fridge and sink. You are able to each your dishes there! You usually need to have your own soap, towel, and scrub brush or whatever you use.

Do your parents take on the entire expense for your education or do you also contribute?

Hi! Did you need an ethernet cord/your own wifi router?
Hi! Not anymore! UBC Secure (UBC's wifi network) is now in all residences.
