teeman9266 this is so me lol. I love fox. I have shirts of him. But can't get his 3 frame short hop consistently (hands aren't fast enough?) so I play Falco
+Adricgames Kirby is for you if: - You're a masochist - You enjoy being "that guy" - You have no real desire to compete at a serious level - You thought you picked Jigglypuff
Jokes aside, I think Doc is probably the closest to a fireball character besides Falco Other Mario bros can’t rly define their neutral by their projectile Mario’s is mainly only good for covering your high recovery back to the stage And Luigi’s is basically only good for that weird wavedash thingy he does
+Jamie Hyland Falco is good in Smash 4 though. He's just not broken like he was in Melee. Same for Fox, or Peach. Sadly, Marth does need a big buff asap, as does Jigglypuff from what I've read though I never use or see her.
wordoredlink hum... yes I know thank you. Those were just examples. I just named the most prominent characters in the Melee pro scene, sorry if I offended you or something lol...
I like this. You should do these for all of the viables, since this is a great video for newer players who are still contemplating who to main. Had I seen this when I began to play Melee competitively, I probably would've picked up Falco a bit earlier. Not to say this video is persuasive (informational, rather), but before I knew much about the game I never chose him since my friends told me Falco was more defensive. I spent a long time playing Fox and Falcon, since my perception was that they were the most "offensive" characters. That might be true, but until I really sat down with Falco, I had no idea how much combo potential he possesses (I like to play pretty hype whenever possible). Keep up the great work!
Eh, they could probably skip Kirby, Pichu, Bowser, Ness, G&W, Roy, Mewtwo, Zelda and DK. No reason to waste energy making videos for characters that rarely get used in (serious) tournament matches.
Nathan Kirksey Mewtwo's better than you think. He has range, grab game and many safe options along with his stellar wavedash. Still, no skips! Save them for last, sure, but don't ignore them!
If you like Mewtwo, great. However, hardly anyone plays him. Makes no sense to spend hours making a video that only a small handful of players will find useful.
+Xatu Nightcore Im sorry but mewtwo does not have many safe options. I emplore you to list them if you know them. Even his dash animation is so long at 18 frames that fox-trotting is virtually impossible, and his dash dance puts his tail in front of him so if you want to move you have to suffer the jumpsquat animation and wavedash. In a forward dash( the only one you can use) you'll only have the grab option, since jc usmash is also useless, that is, unless you can pivot tilt. So you've got to wavedash to move. his ftilt has endlag, his air moves have either little range or not enough knockback to make up for the lag, and that means you'll be stuck on the ground throwing shadow balls and dtilting. No, I'm sorry. He's not good. Sheild grab and dash grab can only get you so far. His only real strength is combing fast fallers and edge guarding in my opinion.
I like Falco, but I'm not very good at the technical side of things. I haven't played a lot of technical fighting games, so timing these frame perfect moves is so hard for me. I can do them, but usually not consistently or in the right situations.
And they arent frame perfectamente inputs not all of them, the basic stuff becomes second nature after awhile, i started playing in july and un already good at my local scene
+theacp127 the mental block you will get into when playing a spacey like fox or falco is the tendency to push too many buttons, meaning throwing out moves just because you can throw them out fast. they are still very calculated characters, and you can't just go in and try to overwhelm your opponent with fast button pressing. practice the fundamentals of the character and the speed will follow when you understand the options you have with a spacey.
I think Falco is kind of the equivalent of Talonflame from Pokemon. At a glance, it just seems like he has one or two standout traits that completely overshadow everything else and make him a one-trick pony. However, he actually has enough versatility to adapt to a wide variety of situations and playstyles.
These overview videos are a really good idea, especially for new players. Picking a main can be rather difficult, especially in the age where we have the tier list and you might feel pressured into selecting exclusively from top tier characters. You should play someone whose playstyle makes sense to you. If you're not familiar with a character's playstyle, how can you make an educated decision? For an upcoming video, I'd enjoy seeing a guide to Puff's Neutral Game, because I'm probably playing my cards wrong :P
These guides are pretty great, but one aspect I think you could improve in is covering the differences between characters. For example, here you explain Falco's playstyles pretty well, but I think more comparisons to Fox (and explanations of how he's different) would have been useful, especially for new players who are trying to figure out a main. I know you mention that their playstyles are opposite, with more vertical combos and DI mindgames, but I feel like this can be elaborated on. Additionally, even if you know that, as a new player it can still be tough to understand what would draw a player to Falco over Fox and vice versa, because they both seem similar in the sense that they're fast high APM characters that are typically played offensively but can also be played in a more defensive style. Again though, these guides are great and they do just about everything else flawlessly.
I'd say falco's recovery is way worse than 3/5. He falls like a rock and his up be has horrible diagonal recovery making him far more predictable than fox.
I personally prefer playing Falco to Fox specifically because he has more frames to shorthop, and by extension wavedash. Also the laser is a bit more useful.
Would like to see weegee soon :~) but going in pseudo-tier order makes good sense for the series too. Love these! If I could suggest, add a snippet of bread&butter combos after the "____ is your main if" portion, for further influence to pick up your controller and try it out.
Great video! I'm starting out on competitive battling in melee and to be honest I don't really know who to main. I played Falco in ssbb-ssb4 so I thought it would be cool to main him in melee, and this tutorial helped me decide. Keep up the great work, you earned a sub :)
My cousin and my brother had both been teaching me competitive melee since I was 4 (I am not exagerating or joking) however my first main was Link then. I then switched to falco several years later because I didn't want to main someone who wasn't that much competitive. To this day(10 years later), I've been maining falco and I've been really enjoying him because of mostly his combos and his down air.
I was playing Melee with a friend the other day to get back into the Melee scene. When we started to goof around I started playing Falco. That was honestly the most fun I had with Melee in years and I'm gonna continue to work on maining Falco!
Thanks for making these and the rest of the tutorial specific levels. The Smash community is often opposed to noobs and handholding so I appreciate any insight into the specifics and advanced strategy.
I really like the Calle W mention! I had no idea he was that famous. I knew he won XSmash back in 2007 but other than that he hasnt done much. Pretty cool!
I'm liking these videos a lot, keep it up! Btw out of curiosity are you just working your way down the tier list when choosing who to do these on, doing whats requested, or something else?

Falco is for you if... You just started playing Falco lol but seriously, every new player I see on SL is a Falco main and they all play the exact same way lmao. Love these videos btw.
I've been more tempted to switch from Falco to someone who has a lower skill floor, like Marth or Sheik. I feel like I've been practicing forever, and still haven't improved, which isn't actually true, I'm much better than when I first started but I feel like I have so damn far to go. Hopefully I start to see more improvement so I feel less discouraged, but we'll see. Back to practice, I suppose. Oh, and thanks for the videos, Kira.
ChillTerumi Yeah. That's what I've been doing. It's really just boils down to play as much as you can and you'll keep getting better, but it's frustrating that I can't just be great right now, haha.

I tried to play falco but he's all over the place, and i can't get him under control. I'm a luigi main, so i'm used to slower movement. I'm bad both with him and against him, but i grew sick of losing to him, and i trained against a cpu, and found out how to deal with his lasers: shield every time he tries it. I've improved a lot. I still lose a lot, but recently i've beaten a falco main.

6:17 Pretty much if you prefer to use heavy and powerful combos and want nice priories which is why I would prefer Falco over Fox in my opinion.
Two years later and I’m still triggered that Bombsoldiers name is misspelled.
Yay! Just as I started playing melee and chose to main falco!
We've had two space traveling animals, and a dethroned prince. WHO'S THE NEXT CHALLENGER APPROACHING?
Your a Falco Player if You “Personally I Prefer D Air!”
is that transition noise from Borderlands? it sounds like one of the sound effects from it
lol i love that game, but no it's just a generic soundfx
I always assumed it was from Borderlands as well
I miss this Falco 😢
Sick. Sheik next?
All these years and I just now found out the meaning behind Forward's name...
Hell yes!!! Thank you so much!
