    I learned my lesson the hard way, I bought a ford van from Copart with damage to the near side from and suspension only needed a wing, headlight, mirror and a wishbone. The van only had 63,000 miles on the clock but didn’t start, they said it could be a flat battery but when the van was delivered and we tried to start it wouldn’t start only to find out that the engine was fucked so I had to buy a new engine.

    Great stuff you solved a puzzle- I always wondered with near-identical cars (with just wear and tear bodywork) at Copart ... one will attract loads of bids ...and the other nothing ...obviously, the smart guys know something.

    Mk5 golf if you're looking for one.. check the sills as they rust from the inside.. badly sealed from factory and it allows water to get into the sillls... good car when not rusty!

    The 1.6 FSI engines had problems with their hydraulic timing chain tensioner. When the car is turned off the oil pressure in the tensioner drops, then when you start the engine it can take a few seconds for the oil pressure to build back up. This combined with the use of plastic chain tensioners and guides, maybe could have caused the chain to jump a few teeth.

    I've seen dozens of Copart specials. The best was a 2017 A Class with body damage, stated as non runner but not mechanical. The guys who bought it put it on the ramp took off the undertray and the rods were through the block. The cost of body work and a 3.5k engine later..... off course Copart said sold as seen. The lesson being disregard anything they claim and look for yourself. And if you don't know, stay well clear. CAT U really means unsellable elsewhere

    Great vid, the golf gti was obviously the car to go for here, nice colour, good interior and not riced up like so may others. The other golf 1.6 was just average but it had major engine issues due to either lack of oil, a leak or oil pressure issues. The engine runs sure but its not a run and drive. It sounds like the cams were shot or the timing was out.

    It's probably the timing chain. The 1.6 fsi is known for having a timing chain rather than a belt, and it does go wrong after a while. Dont know how much it would cost to fix, but I reckon there's money in that far imo

    Really relaxed presentation style makes it look easy. so far so good. But I would be looking more at the ages of the cars as 2009 would be a cut off for me with a lower or medium milage in fact best to make it 2012 ten yrs, old paying a bit more can be worth it in the long run. You do not miss much but small issues soon add up and profit is lost. Overall a good intro to buying. If you have a qualified mechanic then you can both make a wage.

    I`ve taken a chance & brought unseen, & so far I`ve been lucky. my Jag XJR was one of them, I went from tiny, grainy pictures on their website (I can't remember who I got it from now), but when it was delivered the damage was exactly what I expected. 11 years on, I still have it. I got a Daimler from another yard, with MOT, for a ridiculous £273, & again, that was exactly what I expected (& I had it mint within an hour of receiving it as I had a donor car in the same colour).
    I`m always a bit worried about how they`ve been treated in the yard though, some salvage & scrap yard employees are animals, & will quite happily rev the nuts off the engine, just to see if it`ll go bang, just for a laugh..

    Interesting videos. I was surprised you identified the knackered engine Golf as a 'scam' car. I was waiting for a forged V5 or a dude in a sheepskin coat... Surely the engine problem is really just a 'buyer beware' issue? Some dafty buys it without starting it, I'd be thinking they are the mug not the vendor? Anyway, very interesting.

    I bought a mondeo,1.8 LX auto,it was really a bad buy in my own eyes and wished id bought a straight car..But i really fancy buying a copart car that has minor damage as i watch different videos on here..I don't have a huge budget but it be interesting to see how much car i could buy on a very limited budget.How much would you say..?
    As my mondeo on a 1994 plate was a real bad buy,it had outstanding finance and was poorly repaired by my chosen garage,sub frame was bent also.i think i paid £1700 cash and then a further £600 in repair work..i did however manage to sell it for £1200,at least i got some money back..when you lose £1100 on a car..that's mega scary..this was back in 2002-2003 time..

    • @CarsForPaul
      @CarsForPaul  5 лет назад

      Hi Tim, with any salvage car, you only save money when you do the work yourself, if you have to farm out all the repairs to a garage, then its a false economy and will cost you more money as you discovered. my biggest issue is paintwork, I am useless at it so I try to work around this by buying panels that are the correct colour. Hope this helps

  • @davyboy888
    @davyboy888 4 года назад

    Love the videos... Just on the Golf Match... I couldn't quite hear how loud it was but that FSI engine is very rattly when you start it for the first time. If it's extremely bad when warm, then it's the infamous cam chain tensioner that's on its way out. They're not that difficult to replace. The other issue with these Mark V Golfs is the diff bearing in the gearbox and that's not really something for the DIY mechanic... needs a gearbox specialist. The 1.6FSI is a horrible engine, if possible try and get the 1.4TSI in the very last of the Mark V Matches. They also suffer from cam chain issues but at least the engine's a little more lively and fuel efficient.

    On copart there are some cat B that look like they could be back on road what’s you experience with them (video maybe)? Subbed

    • @CarsForPaul
      @CarsForPaul  5 лет назад +1

      Cat B's are normally too damaged or are deemed unsafe to be ever put back on the road. they can only be sold for parts and the body has to be disposed of by a licensed EPA dismantle agent.

      Times have changed and the dangerous cut and shuts of the '90s have long gone. the stuff that goes back on the road today is safe with only minimal damage.

    • @jackward368
      @jackward368 5 лет назад +1

      Cars are designed to fall apart now the car takes the impact not you. A lot of the cat n cars wrote off today are a real shame and marked as wrote off for a damaged mirror or bumper false fucking economy

      The insurance company will pay out the retail value of the car when it is written off. If they can sell it to be repaired they get 25% to 50% of their payment back. If they scrapped them all your insurance would double.

    Hello dear friend
    I bought a car on Copart last month ,it was cat s car so I send vc6 forum to get the logbook but they after few weeks they send a letter and said the car it hasn’t got any history on data base and insurance so you have to pay 25 pound also I be done the Hpi check and it’s clean history I wonder the data base hasn’t been update or.... have you got any idea ?

    • @CarsForPaul
      @CarsForPaul  5 лет назад +1

      That tells me that it is not a Cat S and if it comes up with clean history, that means that it is likely to be a Cat U. Copart do make mistakes sometimes

    Sorry this needs to be taken down , you cannot do physical inspections at salvage dealers for obvious reason, good information, however no disrespect but there are to many people promoting salvage companies and other items ie tools,scanners and the like because they are getting something out of it, this has a major impact on the industry, driving prices up by giving the public a false perception.
