steve i would have taken off the rocker cover, it sounds to me like some of the valves are stuck open. i dunno where your from but if its local to swansea and you need a hand with mechanical jobs send me a message.
Try a wet compression test if the compression rises then it's rings but you can also use a leak down tester with a air compressor and the adapter tool, but also check the timing chain/belt incase it's snapped if it has most likely bent valves if it's an interference engine, if it's a none interference engine no harm would have been done to the valves or pistons, loving you're videos so far keep up the amazing work and I do hope the swift can be saved someone would love it as a first car :)
Engines are cheap on ebay, I used to own one 1.3 2006 130k miles on the clock they are normally robust, common issues with these are subframe corrosion
0 compression belts snapped or something like that! You should leave alone cars that are in copart as non starters without any damage as it usually means the engine is knackered or close to going bang.

Won bid Friday, flew down Monday and drove damaged car back home arrived Tuesday. Wouldn’t advise anyone do this but I had a good gut feeling and she’s served me well ever since.
I was wrong saying the car was listed as a non runner. It WAS NOT listed as a non runner. .nothing in the notes or description said non runner. I concluded it wouldn't start from a picture of the dashboard with rpm at zero and ignition lights were on.
If there is no compression in ALL cylinders that indicates to me cambelt snapped surely? All the rings/valve seals don’t go at once. Or it’s been flooded as you said previous.
Spark Plug Steve agreed, also if it had jumped it should’ve locked up if it’s a collision engine and still would’ve ran if it wasn’t (just very rough) either way it’s gutting mate :(
Was going to say same , my fiesta timing belt snapped while going down m1 , didn’t realise at the time and tried cranking and cranking and sounded exactly the same .. had to drop another engine in as I was told it would be too risky just fitting another belt as every part would be out of sync
That engine must be badly out of time so on the compression stroke its leaving the valves open. Timing belt or chain has either gone or slipped off the TDC marks. Either way the engine sounds 🤮
You would think consumer law would require the auction to carry out tests on engines etc. and carry out a proper inspection. Such as requires replacement engine or rebuild. What does the auction house do for it’s money? Apart from taking a few photos and moving cars about on a forklift.
If I recall, the timing belt failure leads to engine destruction (pistons hitting open valves). As well, the engine may have overheated, by neglecting to check guages and fluid levels. If you can procure a good second hand engine, (perhaps from a car in poorer body condition), you'd be set. It seems Copart are just 'jockeying around' with assorted cars, with assorted conditions.. A wet test will raise compression but when compression is near zero there's no hope for it . Valves are open on the compression stroke which I think is because of a jumped timing chain.
I would not expect all four cylinders to have no compression at all, that's weird, has someone had it a part because of cylinder two and not refitted a new head gasket because the engines knacked, is there an head gasket in there? is the head lose?....Even if the cambelt snapped I wouldn't expect the valves to hole all four pistons???? you would have to be really unlucky?????? Whats the mileage on the engine?
I think timing chain has jumped teeth so valves are open on the compression stroke. I think it's A non interference engine so no valve contact on the pistons.
Sounded like timing chain/belt had gone on it hence no compression on all 4. If chain it could of been the tensioner and its slipped cogs and threw the chain off all together

I can’t believe you bought a non runner and it won’t fire up, I personally would have ran a few checks like timing for one because it clearly sounds like timing belt failure as it is highly unlikely that you wouldn’t get compression from a couple of cylinders, but you would have found that had you took the timing cover off
Sorry to hear about the bad luck with the car Steve. However, it was calculated in respect of cost and maybe the next one will bring a nice profit. :-)
I know it probably comes down to time, but It would’ve been nice to see it stripped down and diagnosed. As soon as I saw that air filter I thought the same as you, it’s sucked in water and bent valves, a cheap borescope/endoscope is well worth keeping in your toolbox, I would have expected to see signs of water ingress in the bores given how long cars sit at copart for.

Fast and easy!!!!!!!
Never heard of them Suzuki (M13A & M15A) engines having timing chain issues those engines are usually bulletproof. Only thing that goes wrong with those cars is the gearbox.
You're the second person that i've watched today that have been done over by Copart. the other chap had a Fiat500, is there anywhere else you could get cars from? - Looking forward to the Skoda Videos! - Dont forget to put the battery back in the Skoda
Ive been lucky with everything I’ve bought from there except for a 13 plate diesel B Max that I bought in November that was running in the photos but seized solid when it arrived , last time I buy one of their so called enhanced vehicles , still got it , I’m just looking round for an engine for it now but they aren’t cheap
Nobody is done over or a victim here , you bid sight unseen and take your chances. That's why it's an auction. You have to bid asuming the worst. Non runner = budget for replacing engine.
Alan Paris ...I never said I was done over , I always leave room for the worse case scenario , even if I have to break it, I’m just steering clear of any non running flood damaged and anything listed as enhanced , I’ve done really well from Copart over the years , you’ve got to take the rough with the smooth with auctions , and I usually go and view but I took my chances and failed 😂
Too difficult for a RUclips fix? Would have been very interesting to see !
I would definitely watch that! =)
Yep timing chain. Sounds the same as when K12 micra chains snap
A pity as I like the Suzuki not so Swift. Weather sounds as great as it is down South. Enjoyable content Steve.
As an ex employee of said auction house, I’d never buy a thing from there! Not a thing...
Maybe you can help me with this question. There was no additional notes on the car and nothing to state its a non starter. I just concluded it wouldn't start from the pic of the dashboard and engine wasn't on. Could I complain as it wasn't listed as a non runner?
having got £400 in it already i wouldnt never have scrapped i would simply have looked for another swift with damage on it that i had the bits on my £400 one to complete the repair ie good door roof pannels wings etc etc i always did this when this happens its the best recovery method for your £400 investment . o tip be carfull taking the battery off the skoda as the ecu can lose its programming and will not start when battery is put back on only fix recover it to dealer to have ecu reprogrammed done that one myself learnt the hard way . why didnt you check the timing belt or chain ?
I considered checking the chain but the problem was obvious by the end so did twmat to waste any more time on the car. Just move on to the skoda
I reckon overheated at some point (coolant leak head gasket)
Or even hydrolocked been lots of floods lately! Shame tho mate..
Can totally sympathise with you on this Steve. I got stung with an Auction VW Polo a couple of years ago. One elderly lady owner, really low mileage so I thought I was sorted. Oh no! Engine totally buggered. Lost over £2k in the end🙁
Wasn't a 1.2 TSI by any chance?
@@VSTV1993 No a 1.4 Auto
@@okeycokey7391 oh, i know the 1.2 TSI's (2010-2012) have known issues with tensioner failures. Mines on 94k (2012) still on original chain. I think its all down too regular servicing which can impact engine life significantly
Valves stuck?
Instantly sounded like lack of compression Steve cam belt I thought instantly..may not be tho? Just a thought..Copart again !!
I would think a second hand engine put in would be worth it allways worth something as a runner
Thanks for being honest and keeping us informed, sorry you lost money on this one.
That was hydro locked, bent the valves and snapped the chain - scrap
No compression.. You may as well stick a firework up the exhaust..
Broken timing chain sounds like it pull rocker cover
