- The Alfa Romeo Giulia is one of our favourite new executive sedans, competing with the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4. But can the Italians build a serious C-Class rival you can live with every day? Tom spends a week in Sydney with the Giulia 200PS / 147kW petrol to start finding out.
Would you consider the Giulia? Do you like the way this Alfa sedan looks? Let me know all your thoughts in the comments.

it's worth mentioning that alfa is still sticking to those signature v grill in front of all of its cars and still makes them look damn cool and proportionate to the overall design
Good point. No hulking massive grilles here.
That shot from outside the rear door into the cabin while you talk from driver seat was SLICK! Never seen that framing and it shows so much of the car it’s really inviting. Creative!
Thanks!
I recently traded my 420 for a Giulia… your review is spot on, the Alfa is not as refined as the BMW but is so much more fun to drive and is a car you look forward to driving.
Italian designers are the best
666666666666 and I have been working on the same day as the last one in in in a month which will give me me the final amount for sale at a later stage but the price seems pretty high to us now though I guess it is a good one to look for at least two months to pay the deposit by end November as they have not yet completed yet but we are away for a couple more than a couple months to complete this project to complete my degree studies including a full week course to be considered to work out out the best way that we may as possible make it difficult possible if the application has not made an impact as it may not have occurred since September due by September 1st November which was the only one that had left our class so
I've had my 2018 Giulia Ti (Veloce) Sport since April and there hasn't been so much as a peep. Runs absolutely brilliantly. It really is a sublime machine.
Great to hear, Paul. Glad you're enjoying the Giulia.
@@chasingcars But Chasing Cars is worried for you and the "Reliability" !!!!
FORZA ALFA BABY !!!! THE GERMAN FANBOYS ARE CRYING !!!!
Does it have enough ground clearance?
No, actually we never buy Alfas - I personally only buy Mercedes and I am smiling as are others, and BMW owners who actually are so proud of their cars.@@dinopappous6639
I have the 2017 Ti Q4. I love it! I did, however, immediately replace the run flat tires with the all season performance Pilot Sport AS3+. I have absolutely no complaints about ride quality now. And those tires are much stickier than stock, so the handling is better too. Highly recommend anyone buying this car, swap out the run flats. Just get yourself a flat repair kit to be safe. Enjoy!
That’s a great tip Jason, thank you! With PS3s I’m sure it steers like it’s on rails, too.
Did u test drive the all wheel vs real wheel ?
Excellent fact based opinion. Didn't miss a thing. I agree, the safety kit is serious omission, then again, it astounds me how BMW and Audi charge for this as well. Merc seems to have latched on to the must have active safety with their new A class. True an Alfa shouldn't have a diesel. Truly enjoy your in depth reviews Tom. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for your kind remarks. Yes, it's interesting tracking the developments in adaptive safety -- in many ways, the mainstream brands have led the way by flicking the switch and making everything standard (Mazda, increasingly Hyundai, etc). As NCAP five-star ratings get tougher, we'll see less of a patchwork here.
I don't get what "safety kit" is omitted on this car....I have autonomous braking , lane departure warning (which I shut off), Rear Cross Warning (if a car or object passes behind me while I'm backing up), BLIS warning ? And I have them on both my Giulia Quad and Stelvio Ti Sport....More than enough "interference" from the car thank you...I am still capable of driving myself !!
I don't want any of those extra features. I pay attention when driving and have no need for the extra nannies.
Not anywhere near from Australia, but I really like your reviews. You deserve way more subs.
Thanks a lot, Steve!
I just thought the same, I live on the exactly opposite side of earth, yet I’m here enjoying your video ;) Btw, you have a great voice, if you just practiced your voice emmision a bit, I could listen to it for hours :p Keep up good videos!
Well it definitely looks much better than the 3 Series, the C Class or the A4.
I agree, even though I still do like the C-Class and it is probably a better choice if you want better build quality. XE and Giulia are the better looking and more exciting cars though.
Alfa has blown the Germans away straight out of the box !!!!
Nice to look at but not so nice to drive or maintain :)
I didnt drive this new model but one from 2005 and a 2011 Alfa. I never really like the steering and shifting. Feels a bit to wobbly in my opinion :/
@Farina Marcina I am not hating on it + im not even driving a german car. I dont think they are that good anymore either.
@@L0v0lup If you don't own an Alfa, how do you know? I have a 156 over 10 years now, total cost in repaires € 3500,--
@@L0v0lup Try this one, big difference! I own a 2017 Giulia Veloce Q4 and love it. The steering is super direct, which I love, the car has more than enough power for everyday driving and the suspension, brakes and seats are phenomenal. If you want a drivers car that allows you to dissect curves FAST while also acting as a family sedan, then this is the one to get! I also test drove the Quadrifolio, but unfortunately it's price tag was just a bit too steep for me, otherwise I'd be the owner of a Saturn V today, instead of a Proton... Alfa is back!
Alfas are beautiful in every way, personality, soul a true drivers car.
Stellar review, well done.
Thanks Adrian!
Welcome back Alfa Romeo ! A lot much better than german competitors bmw serie3 and audi A4. Italian cars got their revenge on the german one, big up AR💪🏻
Definite the nicest car I have EVER seen!
High praise!
GIULIA is a ANGEL
That pair of pedal shifters are pretty cool.
Yep, the paddles are so much more tactile and satisfying than the little plastic units you get in most cars from this class!
GOOD VID MATE!!
Thanks!
Lad with a style :)
perfect combination,white with red interior
I just hope FCA kind of seperates their luxary cars (alfa,Maserati ect) from their others. My local dealer sells alfas with chargers and rams, which (in my opinion) bring down the perception it being a luxary competitor.
That’s interesting. Here, my local Alfa dealer shares space with Maserati, which works better I think.
They just don't have the dealer network. They are combining dealers with fiat and Maserati. I agree that is doesn't suite the brand but they aren't able to get dealers to take the plunge. I'd love to design an Alfa Romeo or Alfa/Maserati dealership. It would combine the history with Italian feeling, not a cold place like a BMW or Mercedes dealership
As an ex-Alfa owner, you've lost me at "a safe alternative to..." You buy an Alfa for what it is. No more. No less.
It’s a shame you weren’t willing to engage with that remark on a higher level than just switching off Khaled. The fact is that the Giulia does have to attract the A4 and 3er crowd. That’s why FCA spent several billion euros developing it.
I have owned three, you are right. After three years they are all crap BMW, no difference .
@@chasingcars you are correct, but a true Alfa owner would never consider a fwd Audi or barge c class
I WILL BUY ONE.
Bought the Nero Edizione last month.... absolutely love it. Drives amazing... tested BMW, Mercedes, & Audi before I made my decision.

16500 miles on my 2017 base Q4 right now.
I think the only thing I don't like, being 6' tall, is the position of the side pillar. 😒

@@IraTopp Thats kinda funny because as Jeremy Clarkson pointed out there has to be something wrong with it, for it to be a real Alfa Romeo....and as it turns out they just happened to put the front doors in kinda the wrong place 😆
But I dont care about that, I still desperately want one!
Your comments around ride on rough road is a common issue with any sporting aspired car with low profile rubber.
The state of our country roads in particular, makes this an important consideration one that should feature more broadly in all Australian car reviews.
It is common, but XE (for example) deals better with lumpy country roads despite similarly low profile rubber. You can feel that the Alfa is broadly tuned for smooth surface European roads.
Great review mate. Cant get past that red interior though 🙈
Thanks George! The red is definitely a statement. The tan option would be my pick.
I love the red interior
I'd never thought I would like this car in white but it grew on me. But I would like to see it in red for the same version.
White does suit the Giulia
so at 6:27 we finally get to drive the car, hilarious. at 56,000 kilometers on my 2017 giulia sport and really enjoying it.
All our reviews run to a formula, as you’d see on the channel. That way you can shop around consistently. Driving an Alfa will always be important but people buying these cars need to know what the cabin is like, too.
@@chasingcars Perhaps less formula = more success as an auto journalist. I did appreciate your review and subscribed to your channel.
I have the Super in black with the red interior. A good car but it's had technical issues. Alfa seem to still suffer from some quality issues.
u turned the wrong way on a one way street at the 9 min mark. Be safe out there bro. Great Review Tho
Nice in white
Agreed, and you almost never see Giulias in this colour
Giulia is possibly the most beautiful girl in the world.
Alfa was always known for decent driving dynamics, but their quality was usually subpar, a bit like Fiat which in the 70's they said you could hear them rust in the garage. Hope this has improved. Alfa diesel isn't that a sacrilege.
Quite right. Quality and durability-wise, we won't know with the Giulia until they've spent a few years on the road. Being an FCA product, I'm not filled with confidence...if I was going to get one, I'd lease it and flip it before the warranty is up.
That said, these things may well turn out to be totally fine in the long run. We will wait and see!
Not sure what the depreciation is like on the Giulia but I'm sure it'd be worth taking a risk on a 2nd one!
I've had my giulia for a year and half and haven't had a single issue. the only time it's been in the shop is to get it's regular maintenance (oil change etc.)
@@chasingcars Is that what you do with your GERMAN CARS ? Because nothing is more problematic than a BMW OUT OF WARRANTY !!!! SCARY FOR SURE !!!
@@dinopappous6639 I've not had many issues with mine.
Sheesh this is a beautiful car. I was set on getting a Tesla for so long, but now this one is calling my name. Any suggestions on which one to purchase?
Italian passion vs glorified golf cart
If you can afford it buy the qv. If not go the veloce
What ultimately drives better? The Giulia or Jaguar XE? I've heard good things about the drive on both.
For me, ultimately the XE - as the Jaguar combines about 90% of the Alfa’s handling involvement but with an utterly delightful, supple ride.
@@chasingcars NOW YOU'VE REALLY LOST YOUR CREDIBILITY !!!!
FORZA ALFA BABY !!!!
Steering on the Alfa is better. If you want more performance go Alfa. If you want better performance than Mercedes but don't care much beyond that then get the Jag. The new XE does look good although I hate the screens and the digital gauges. The analog one on the new XE looks very cheap as well
What is kilowatts of power? I am used to horsepower and would expect you would give us kangaroo power - that would be reasonable for this Alfa Romeo! It's a beautiful car.
I still maintain that a secondhand giulietta qv is the most fun you can have for under $15k
Yeah, that’s a good buy.
Pricing and no manual a problem for me however a Super with blue paint and tan interior reminds me of a early 70’s Berlina 2000 without usual Alfa gripes
Blue and tan - fantastic combination!
such a nice car, don't really understand why it doesn't move on the market, in some region they have to give alfa for free when you buy marsarati
Mostly because Alfas are not regarded as reliable in Australia. It'll take some time to change that perception, if the Giulia does indeed turn out to be reliable.
What's a Marsarati? Did you mean a Maserati?
@@sergiodario58able im glad a fellow european like myself knows this asian should by a ssanyonh
I read online that the only con is the lack of space in the backseat . What the fuck I care , I am not sitting in the back , I am driving IT !! The people in the backseat can resist for a drive with not much space . Trunk is not the biggest and interior is not as nice as other cars of the same category , if you really care about Alfa and if you know the story of this car you would know that this car is based on performance . It’s like you are driving a Ferrari for much much less!
Unfortunately, driving a Giulia base model is not like driving a Ferrari - but it is like driving a very good sports sedan!
$60k? More like $45k for the ti w/ sport package. The car is fastttt and fun
We're not in America
Chasing Cars I know, so I wouldn’t use dollars, the American currency since it is mid-leading for NA buyers.
No mate - you shouldn’t assume that anyone who uses the word ‘dollars’ is referring to the US. The Australian currency is also called dollars, as is Canada, Hong Kong, New Zealand and about 15 others. We’re an Australian publication making content primarily for Australians - as an American you’re welcome to enjoy it, but it won’t be tailor made for you.
Chasing Cars haha, ok. Fair enough.

Mundane car review
Giulia kicks the XE’s ass.
The navigation screen is a bit to close to the driver and the mirrors as well (I have this mirror distance issue in my 159 also), (I'm 1.72cm).
One thing I noticed immediately was the sporty building of the car, on the passenger side is very noticeable that our head is very close to the window or the roof bar, entering the car in the back is almost gymnastic and my feet almost didn't feet under the front seat. Oh yes, there are still plenty of "Alfa things" :) but I would say the biggest drawback is the price.
I drove the veloce diesel with 210bhp. I'm not used to the shift pedals but the few I tried don't even get close to this ones, they are really good and nice to handle. I didn't notice the 210bhp, I'm always demanding more power from my 150bhp SW 159 diesel and still I didn't feel any huge power and accelerating (I did not push it to extremes though).
I love the leather interior and the car feels solid. The trunk is kind of small, is very wide but very low.
About the leather quality or not, my 159 has leather seats and they pretty good, why? The car is 10 years old, and only the driver seat has some wear marks. The passenger and back seats look like new and they are regularly used, compared to let's say.. bmw leather seats or even tesla, I would say my alfa seats are pretty good.
Although the "N" mode driving is... acceptable, I would drive the car mostly in "D" mode, that's the only option the car feels good while driving. Is nice to have real speed dials and not digital ones :)
can't say much more from a 20min limited experience, the car is all sporty, is expensive to buy and expect to be expensive to maintain, but I would by one. Damm it, I love the car! :)
So it's ok for grown ups?
At 9:00, I'm scared. He turned left and went the wrong way! LOL
alfa does have a manual trans no?
In some left hand drive markets the Giulia has a manual available, but it’s not built for any right hand drive market sadly.
@@chasingcars me not from australia but still love watching your videos and car culture in australia .... and yeah i also from a RHD country ..but all manufacturers are killing manuals these days ..
Poor camera placement. Filming the front interior while filming from the back.
Hi Michael. It’s designed to let you see the dashboard.
@@chasingcars I've got a head rest and B-Pillar in the way. Might have worked better centered in the backseat looking forward. Certainly not as interesting as the weird side-rear angle but most likely more effective.
Feedback noted, and if you have a watch of our most recent five or six videos you’ll see we have ditched that angle anyway in favour of a one take strategy, which incorporates a full side view of the front interior commentary.
Infotainment better than Uconnect or was that a case of spontaneous dementia?
Personal opinion. Not a Uconnect fan. Prefer the Teutonic rotary controller driven systems -- and Alfa's graphics and fonts look more attractive.
Lost me at that comment. Uconnect is one of the most user friendly systems out there.

I was in love with my Giulia and Alfa Romeo as a brand, however, I will never again buy/recommend another Alfa Romeo in my life. I had the brake by wire system fail on me and it caused me to crash and total the car. They sent someone from Bosch to diagnose the vehicle and in the charts it clearly showed that something malfunctioned (brakes were slammed 2 seconds before the impact at 40 MPH and it took more than 1.5 seconds for the speed to start going down.) Stellantis told me that they were not going to take responsibility for it and that I needed to have my insurance pay for the vehicle. Absolute garbage. I will never recommend this car brand to anyone again!
How does this guy shifts between two different voices faster than an alfa romeo gearbox !!!

How on earth is having the start/stop-button on wheel cool?
The wheel should have those essentials you need when driving in a everyday setting ie. buttons for navigation and the audio system and that is it. One only needs the start/stop-button twice for every drive and never in an on road situation, so I would say having it on the wheel is not cool.
Because it looks awesome
I own a Giulia and I find it practical in combination with Keyless Entry: open the door, hop in, hit the button and off you go, without fumbling with the key at all.
@@joergmaass I get having the button for sure, but having it on the wheel is another thing and that I do not get. Seems to me it must be better to have it on the dashboard somewhere within reach, then either the wheel can have a little less clutter or a button for something one needs more than twice per trip.
@@bzdtemp Well, when I get into the car, the first thing I put my hands on is the steering wheel, so I just have to press the button to get going. Different tastes, I guess...
bzdtemp Not sure if it’s cool but it’s a nod to Ferrari (sister company) as they have the start button on their steering wheels.
I find his pants distracting.
This dude needs a workout. Also the std seats do not tilt - which he miss out as the biggest drawback of this version of Giulia.
