How to Paint a Brick Fireplace With Brick Anew: DIY Tutorial - Thrift Diving

- Опубликовано: 5 окт 2012
- This step-by-step tutorial shows you how to paint a brick fireplace that may be too dark, outdated, or just needs to be refreshed. This was my ugly brick fireplace in our family room and it made the room feel very dark like a cave. I used a brick fireplace painting kit called Brick Anew, which creates a faux finish painted brick fireplace that looks like brick, only lighter. I used their Twilight Taupe color.

I like your honesty in this video... Random cursing and praying that it works out sounds exactly like how I sound when I start new projects in my own home.
I was gonna hire someone to update our blah red brick fireplace but after watching your diy video, I'm going to give it a shot myself, much thanks!!!
lisa krueger , I'm so glad I was able to help!! :) Thanks for watching!
I've watch a ton of tutorials now - this one by far knock them all out. I'm thinking about trying to make my own mixture by using a few different paint colors. Thanks for giving me the know how and confidence.
You're so welcome, Charla Halverson !!
I am not a fan of painting over brick but watching how amazing yours looks I want to do mine. The bricks don't look painted .
Hey there! Sorry for the delayed response. The color I used was Twilight Taupe!
YAY! We women do have an "eye" for these things! Glad I could help you make a decision!
So this was your very first video! Well you are just adorable. I love watching you do diy jobs. I hope your family knows what a treasure you are!
I love it and I love how real you are about doing the projects. Makes me believe that I too can do this! Thank you!
I Loved Your Video! I will be doing my fireplace soon.
Such a dramatic improvement over that old red brick
The fireplace came out great! ❤️️❤️️❤️️loved this diy video! Thank you! 😊😊😊
Thanks! You'll love it!
I love ALL of your videos and I am so thankful that you make them! Every time I watch you I am like, "I can DO this!!"
It's beautiful! We're in the planning stages of our fireplace update and this is very helpful. Thanks for posting!
I think the fireplace turned out wonderful! You did a great job!
Thanks for your delightful and genuine video.. Gives me confidence to cover my 70's grey/moss green brick fireplace.. Love the contrast and texture of the product. They should give you commission!
Thanks Donna McMullen ! They actually have started giving me commission for anyone that purchases it via affiliate links on my blog! They loved my video so much they want to work with me on more projects, which is great! :) Glad you are feeling like you can paint yours. It's really easy to do. Good luck!
You're awesome! I love your sense of humor and I think it came out beautiful!
Thanks, rebekkahz !! :)
great job. It looks a thousand times better!!
It looks great! I have an old brick fireplace almost the size of yours. I've watched tutorial after tutorial and finally after watching yours I am feeling better about wanting to do this. Thank you so much for blogging this.
That's awesome! Glad I was able to ease your discomfort! :)
Hi, sorry if I never reminded...? Nope, didn't leave the mortar white, only because I guess the base color was light enough. When I used the glaze and stuff, I made sure I didn't get that part on the mortar. I don't think the color that went on next was darker. It was varying shades of light, specially formulated to get the right effect. Glad you like your new painted fireplace!
Beautiful results, I myself I love fireplaces.
That looks so amazing!!
I have a fireplace “wall” that divides my dining/living room. I just finished painting the dining room side (which is my entryway, ugh) white. But I love this effect so much more! I have the same starting point of brick color (so dark!), and I’m definitely trying this on the living room side then revising the dining room!!
Bruce Bennett If you mean washing it, just get TSP to wipe it down first and let it dry. There was no other prep. Hope that helps!
Yes, thanks....
I'm a Real Estate appraiser and might have to get the scrubber ooot too...hehe
Also my front of me house...there is that old but plain red bricks and I've heard that paint every other one and that can look much more modern?
Sorry just noticed your reply, the now
This turned out great! Thanks🙌
This looks amazing. We have a massive red brick 1971 fireplace and I'm researching frugal options. Love how yours turned out.
Your video is so much better and informative than the one on the Brick Anew site! I feel more confident about tackling this DIY project now. Thank you.
Aww, thanks, Karen! That makes me happy to hear! I love adding as much as i can so that people feel like it's valuable. Hope you're able to get yours done now, too! :) Best of luck!
Love it! You did a great job!
I love the way it turned out it lightens the room up
Yeah, it was pretty dramatic how much LESS family room felt like a cave! LOL
What a beautiful job you did with that out of date brick wall. I love it and am going to try it. Thank you so much!
Thanks, Janice! Let me know how it works out for you! :)
You did great!! Very professional looking results!!
Thank you! And it's held up over the years, too! :)
Love the fireplace. lot of work.
omg It looks great and so much work wow you are a super hero.
Love your DIY tutorials. I just brought a house and I am working on improving and decorating. Thanks for the many ideas.
Thanks, Maria!! :)
Wonderful ..really turned out nice...thz for sharing...
Looks great!!!
Hi, Nancy, not sure if I responded or not (sorry!!). I cleaned it with a brick cleaning product that Brick Anew sold. But you could probably use something like TSP, as well.
Fantastic! Thanks tons. What a great help.
My advice would be to do the base coat first, because then you could liberally paint anywhere and everywhere. Then, I would probably do the other coats/steps, and probably do the grout paint as the last step. Seems like it would make it easier! Let me know how it works out! :)
Awesome! :)
Awesome job!
This is what I'm looking for. Thanks for sharing =)) Great job btw
Very nice! Great job :)
A smokin hot DIYer that goes by her own rules I like that. If I do something wrong she’ll make me do it over again.
I’m just playing the FP looks amazing. Really brightens up the room.
owsome job. This the one I have been looking for, Paint.
Thank you so much! :)
BEAUTIFUL
Nice to finally hear your voice. Great tutorial! Always great to see when things don't go as planned. Too many shows edit out the goofs and errors.
Nice! I have a conventional white wash fire place and was going to go with with the red brick concept. But this is cool. Thanks for the insight. Long live the DIY.
Yes!! Here's to DIY! :)
Thank you, Angela! There's something about our 70's houses with all this red brick! Ugly! lol. Hope the video helped you! :)
thanks for sharing, i just bought my house and am looking to re-stain my mantle and spray the covers, 2 things i learned is the panels can be removed and so can the glass before spraying, also is you put the can in warm water before you spray you'll get a more even distribution when you spray. not sure if i'm going to have to prime or just use scratch pad on it first.
Amazing job!!
Beautiful came out perfectly.....
Thank you!
Thats a good vid.. gave me some ideas thanxs..
hi, about the applying color#1, you fogot to film, do you have any another video or can you explain how works?
Could you tell me the colors you used, its beautiful! You didn't show adding the second color though Do you paint that on the same way or sponge it on? Thanks In

Hi Serena, I was wondering if this system would work on brick work on the exterior of the home...and if I wanted to go darker do I need special paints? I'm new to DIY projects but very interested in trying new things to improve my first home! Thanks for your help!
Oh cool!!!!
Great job on the fire place I will be doing that soon but I was wondering if you knew of a online site that allows you to take a photo of your room to see what color would be good to buy? TY
Just checking on you! Were you able to fix your fireplace? Do you need any help? Oh, and just curious, did you guy this kit because of seeing this video?
i just bought a home and my girlfriend said " you have to paint the fireplace"....i said no way....until i saw your video....awesome....i am doing it....thanks a-lot
My lovely red brick wall is almost the same size as yours. How much more material did you need in addition to what came in the paint kit?
OMG Thank you !!! that looks amazing, im heading to HD tomorrow and im going to do mine ! im an artist so ill be buying the paint, not the kit...your tips were great ! thanks so much for sharing
Sue Shattuck That's awesome!! Send me a pic when you're done. Would love to see it! ThriftDiving@gmail!
Serena Appiah im all done ! it came out beautiful ! so ver pleased....how do i get a picture on here ?
Sue Shattuck ok..i sent to your email...its my AOL email...just sayin :)
+Sue Shattuck Question: Did you do the same color that was in this tutorial? If so, can you provide me with the color's/glazes that you used and in what order?
Hey John! How did it go? Did you end up getting the kit? How did it work for you? :)
On the mortar you didnt leave it white? I just painted my siving room and i love it ,we have an old huge red brick fireplace ,i want it in a gray,so after the primer do you put on the darker color and then med and then the light color? did you roll on the darker one so it covers all the brick? Thanks
Hi!! Aweome choice!! I was wondering what color is it? Misty harbour, sunshine or twilight taupe? I love it! looks so modern too!!
Thank you so much for sharing your DIY. I just received my Brick Anew and I was looking for some instruction videos and I found you! Our brick fireplace looks just like yours just not as much brick! After your video I felt confident to start right away. I do have one question. When you ran out of the base coat and you went to buy a color match, was it Primer that you bought? Mat? or Gloss? Thank you for sharing and I look forward to your next DIY.
Wow! I've seen many brick paint jobs but none more beautiful than yours....You should come over and help me with my fireplace.
LOL, Bob, I wish I could, but I'm just one woman. I only have but so much time! Hopefully this video will help you get yours done. :)
How'd it go, John? Did you end up getting the kit? Did it turn out? Send me pics if you did! ThriftDiving at gmail dot com!
@LollyJK1 I'm so happy this video helped you! :) good luck with your fireplace!
@Scott K Thanks so much, Scott! Yep, that's me! I do love to leave errors and goofs. Much more fun. More videos to follow!
Great👍
Serena are you going to remount your television? Nice renewed fireplace!
Thanks for sharing Serena... Can you share the colors used in your paint scheme? I'm looking for just the colors and not $199 to spend to paint a 5' x 5' fireplace like mine. Thanks!
Hi Serena! I just bought this (in Twilight) after seeing someone else's post, and then found your video. I also ordered some grout / mortar paint in a dark gray because I think I want a little more contrast in colors. At what stage would you recommend that I apply the mortar paint color? Do you think it would go over the base, but before the glazing of bricks? Or would I need to avoid the mortar while painting the base color and really be careful of the lines? What do you suggest?
Loved the fireplace have same problem.
Wow!! Inspiring!!! For your fireplace was the spray paint matte? For High heat? I definitely want to do this!
I’m confused. What happened to the bottom half of your fireplace when you ran out of paint? What did you do im the step you forgot to film?
LOVE your earrings :)
Thank you C Morrow ! They were only $5.00! ;)
If you are using your fireplace...there is a spray paint that withstands high temps...regular spray paint is not recommended.
Thank you for uploading this video! I may be moving into a 70s house with the same damn fireplace lol. The red brick gotta go!
Fireplace looks "almost" as nice as you! Sorry but really cute. Seriously, the project turned out well.
Thanks, Rick! :)
Looks Great! How many total worked hours would you say it took to complete the job?
It looks great, I wonder if it works the same if the brick is already painted.
Hey there, Kandice, yes, it will! As long as the painted brick is in good condition and isn't peeling and stuff.
I'm so happy you did this video! I've been thinking of painting my RED brick fireplace (exactly like yours) with brick a-new for years. You provided me with helpful hints of how to apply the glaze. As for the twilight taupe running out with you were painting...what did you really do? Did you use HD paint for the bottom or order more paint from Brick pay-a-new. I have no problem paying for paint but the cost seems excessive to me for the -amount- of paint they give to the customer. I know that I will need more than one set now that I saw your use the base coat.
Hey there Liz Bot ! I went to HD and bought Brick and Mason paint to match the painting kit I used. I didn't want to shell out more money, and it was nearly an exact match (and has held up just as well!) You really don't get a lot of paint for what you pay. What you're paying for is that they picked out the colors so you don't have to--but if you can color match it, then use the Brick and Mason paint from Home Depot!
What colors did you use?
Thanks!! Yeah, who in the heck thought that was attractive?? UGH....... Good luck! Would love to see it when you're done!
hey Serena..we are going to do it when the kids start school in sept....I will let you know when we are finished..i will take before and after pics so you can see....talk to you later
Did you have to buy another set of the paint? My fireplace is about the size of yours and about the same color as your before, I have wanted to do this for a long time. Yours looks great.
I didn't buy another set of the paint. But for a fireplace this size, you'd probably want to buy an extra bottle of the base coat!
Thrift Diving..did you color match? Or??
Oh no! If you want to email me I can try to take a look and see what you may have done differently. Hit me up at thriftdiving at gmail dot com! Let's get that fireplace looking good!!
Aha old video but it's funny seeing you sigh when you realized how much brick. Though I do like both the original brick and how you painted it looks like it wasn't painted at all. I would gone the easier route and covered the brick mantle with a wood one to make it not so overwhelming and just painted the top and left the bottom original red brick. I still think you need do a nice dark wood cover mantle. I love the idea that you can paint brick like that shame I have no fireplace
👍👍👍
I did a 19 foot fireplace in a coral color - it turned out great. Don't be afraid to use colors. Am now thinking of doing a faux brick fireplace with shelves on each side. Deciding on colors though. It is the focal point when coming in the house. Other colors are 10 years old............I did it in chocolates, dark, light and white. I need some colors here. Any suggestions? Am thinking of gold.
Wow, coral??I bet that was beautiful! Coral is one of my favorite colors. I tend to keep fireplace colors neutral (aka: boring) so that it blends in more so than becomes a huge focal point. I'm not sure about the gold. Why not do a test area and see how it looks? Email me a picture. Would love to see it! ThriftDiving@gmail.com.
Thrift Diving This was the first time I had ever experimented with colors when renovating houses. This house, a former medical center was 2900 sf. had 9 offices and the fireplace was in the reception area, along with a great reception desk. We turned it into a 3 bedroom (master bedroom was 600 sf, had a dressing room w/closet, huge bath with a toilet closet), a bedroom with walk in closet and a separate lounging area. In fact the reception area's desk could have been used as a bar). (Wish I still lived in it. It has a very unusual story to it also. It is mentioned in the book UNHEEDED WARNING, but we did not know about this at the time.
I used white walls throughout, but there were plenty of places to use 3 different shades of coral. This was a stucco building built in '74 and was very much southwestern. The floors were even a coral color. So I ended up using coral throughout the home as an accent color. I'm getting ready for winter, so I don't have time (and I will lose your address) to find the photo. It really did turn out pretty.
My mom and dad had the same brick in their house built in '75. It was never painted. They passed away in 90 & 91.
I have a friend who has a friend who has 100's of cans of paint for $10/gal........good paint. I want this to stand out, but don't know if I want to do the 2 bookcases on the side. I was also thinking of adding glitter. I don't know. What are your thoughts?
How many cans of color did you use? My fireplace isn't nearly as big
MsMajige I used Twilight Taupe. You read about it here: www.thriftdiving.com/tutorial-how-to-paint-an-old-brick-fireplace/
Thanks dear. Great video btw!
I did this also its “white wash”. And I never want to paint again.
Great! If you don't mind, could you send me an email at ThriftDiving at gmail dot com? I have a couple questions to ask you! :) Thanks!
Girl you fine.
@icy00swirl thanks!! And I'm glad this is what you're looking for! If you have any questions, please feel free to email me, thriftdiving@gmail.com
All a bit long-winded with lots of repetition but otherwise a great video which has inspired me to try the same thing to my fireplace. Thanks!
