I did the same thing 2 years ago. Very skeptical about the whole thing since you cannot go back. When I wiped it off I did it with a wet rag. That took off a lot more paint. I figured that if it was too light I could go over again. Turned out awesome! You can see different tones of color bleeding through the whitewash. When I was done I painted on a coat of water based poly. I get many compliments ! Yours really looks great! I’d recommend anyone with a dark fireplace to not hesitate and do it.
kingwood207 thank you...you’ve convinced me!
I kind of want to see a picture or your brick. I want to do it to our chimney but ai think this still looks "to white"

what about paint VOC off-gassing?
YES!! Hard to find someone whitewashing a lighter colored brick. Excellent video Thanks so much!
So you're the guy who does that! We spent weeks getting all the white paint off a stone fireplace!
😁
Thank you. I have a brick column in my kitchen that I'm going to do this with! Now I believe I can!
Finally! A simple easy to follow tutorial for this! Can't wait to get this done in my home in the next few weeks!
Christopher Nesi how did you go?
Did you do it??? I am about to jump on it.. Myself!
@@almohvn33 I went in a completely different direction. No whitewash. Went with a shiplap facelift.
I plan on doing a grey on mine ,hopefully it looks good.
Thank you! I have been looking for a simple way to whitewash my brick fireplace. I am not particularly talented and your technique gave me confidence that I can! (:
Love that you have Jesus and Fatima on your fireplace 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thank you ...I am painting interior black and whitewash exterior. Thank you 🤗
NIce job. You've updated the fireplace, but now need to update those 70's colors.
Looks great, your video was the best I found for whitewashing brick. Can’t wait to do hours.
Great Job !!! .Straightforward....Enjoyed video..
Love this video. You kept it clear and simple 👏
***By far the best fireplace improvement I've seen hands down!***
Thanks John!
I was a bit skeptical about you painting your fireplace but that looks awesome! Thanks for sharing!

Any recommendations for a fire retardant sealer for the base of the fireplace to prevent any shootand ash starting on fire?
I like how this looks. I have a stone wall, with some spray foam in between some of the stones😢....Any advice how to deal with the spray foam before I use your method to whitewash? Also, does the paint you chose do ok outside as well? My wall extends out to the patio. Thank you in advance!
Did white on our old fireplace. The house had a foe brick accent wall in kitchen. Painted white. Nice. We have a screened in porch that I put new windows in, but next I plan on using a white wash technique to brighten up and update that room.
Can you do this for exterior brick as well?
I'm going to give it a try.
hey there. your brick was light. what about it you have darker brick? and do you have to clean it with soap and water before? I just saw you brushing it.
I was considering this. Glad I saw your video first.
If I was to do this to a Working open fireplace. Would It be recommended to seal the Paint above the opening of the fireplace. To protect form Heat or Smoke stain????
Can anyone answer this question?
Hey Tyler!Do you think this method would work on a fake stone fireplace?
Great tutorial. I, too, prefer natural brick but this looks really nice in your space.
This was more simple than I thought. Thanks for sharing!😊
Love your video. May God bless your family
Just painted my fireplace. Thanks for the tutorial.
Can you use any paint? Cause I have 2/3 of paint left from what I used on my trimming
I have a fireplace insert that sticks out about a foot. It gets pretty hot at times and you can touch the brick only for about 5 seconds and have to pull your hand away. Is it safe to use regular paint on the brick in this situation?
Thank you, looks great!
$15 yes , Now mine might need $30 or $45 but still this is GREAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you
Looks good. I already have same unused primer at home. Do you think i could use that but maybe dilute with 25% water?
Perfect! Thank you for making it so simple!
Aw, my man! Ave Maria!
Great job! Now, I know it's that easy! Wow!
Shouldnt you use hight heat paint?
Nice clear instructional video for our Saturday morning project. Thanks!
doing this. I have a Behr white that is eggshell not high gloss--did you use high gloss simply because you had it around or does it require high gloss to get the look right?
Do you need to use heat resistant paint?
Great job
👍🏾 this is what I was looking for!
Glad we could help!
Am I able to use a brick paint and use full strength?
Is this for a functional or non functional fireplace?
Would you add a protective coat, say acrylics, to the hearth especially if traffic is expected?
Is the same thing if I use paint gray instead white?
good question, or a tan/beige-ish color
I prefer natural or red brick but I think the previous owners of my house painted the fireplace a weird orange color so I’ll either whitewash it or gray wash it because I don’t think I could do a natural patchy look.
Beautiful job. But can you stain the brick with a dark walnut followed by polyurethane for a fire place that being use a lot in the winter. Less cleaning.
Belíssimo trabalho e com a imagem da mãe de Cristo fiquei gostando ainda mais. Parabéns.
Your the best! I’m trying it now
Very nice Job you make beautifull thinks
Nice tool box, Harbor Freight? Price is now up to $260 (:. Thanks for the video and not calling us RUclipsrs as so many do when they start off the video. I'll send you before / after videos of my fireplace.
Looks great updated the look for sure
Thanks Craig, we are very happy, thanks for watching!
Look great!
does it require special paint that tolerate the heat?
Not on the brick.
Can I white wash if my bricks are still damp from washing
Awesome video!!
Does it have to be Hi-Gloss paint?
Nope!
Simple and Elegant Nice Job!!!!!!
Another great video Tyler
Wow! Beautiful! Thanks so much! You helped make this so much easier for me!!!
Thank you! I'll be trying this very soon! Yours look great!
wow!! its like new! I need a fire place..... lol
Will this work on slate tile?
This might be a stupid question but my sofa and walls have more of a beige undertone. The wall above my fireplace is painted a beige-ish color. Can I use the same beige paint, dilute 50/50 with water and do the whitewashing, that way it isn't so white?
Yes
what type of paint is used please? I'm looking to do full white paint on brick. thank you
Regular old white latex! Behr I think but it doesn't matter.
Totally changes the whole room, nice fireplace facelift Tyler! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Perfect content!!!
Tyler does the red still shine through?
Looks great!
Great video. You made it look so easy.
Thank you!
Pretty nice sir! Thanks for posting.
Will this work on concrete? I have a fireplace where they just used concrete blocks (as far as I can tell).
Also, can this be done on brick outside using exterior paint?
Looks awesome
It does!
Looks great! I just did mine! It was super easy & totally worth it!
Great video thank you
The Holy Family will be proud of that job.
Did you just use white paint?
Would a black color on brick look good?
Moving to a house with a brick fireplace. I want to do this, can I ask why you mixed paint with water? I know nothing about paint 😂, I would have used it right out of the can.
It's because brick needs to breath or the paint will flake off. The water also helps it seep into the poors and it looks more true to the brick
Is this the same as lime wash?
Great video. Easy to follow. Thank you, new subscriber.
What if you don’t want it as white?
Looks great Tyler.
quick question...if I wanted to revert the fireplace back to red stone, can I just wash this off?
Yes! With Peelaway. You let it sit over night, scrape it off, and then wipe clean.
@@brookefox3627 awesome. Thank you...but I must use the water-based product - thank you.
awesome
I think it would look better more white. Add two more coats.
Hey, I’m a bit late to the party but great video! We have the red brick coloured tiles at the base of our fireplace, would this technique be able to work for that as well? Thanks in advance :D
It would be dependent on what type of tile if it will accept the paint.
Very easy to follow and well explained. Thank you for this video.
what kinds of paint can be safely mixed with water?
Lyn San Diego 102 any water based...basically the latex paint used most on wall and trim. Floor paints tend to be oil based or acrylic for example.
I have a shiny brick red fireplace, so ugly. I wish it was plain so I could do this.
Fantastic! Thank you for this! Going to tackle mine right now:)
Love, love, love!!
I guess that it is a matter of personal taste, but I would rather leave the brick natural.
But, hey, it would be a dull old world if we all liked exactly the same things. 🤷♂️
Nice video, though. Clear, concise and informative. Up to your usual high standard. 👏
Thank you sir, for commenting kindly even if you wouldn't have chosen this for your own mantle! Too many people are just nasty to us when they don't like something.
I spent a month one weekend cleaning paint off a fireplace some one had schlepped paint on.
I would have watered it down even more.
I don't have sunglasses and a hat and a hoody. Should I buy them at the same tiome I get the paint?
You should buy a dictionary so you can learn to spell time
You don't need high heat paint for this?
This is the 6th video I have viewed and the only one that gives the look I want. The rest of them are sealing with 2 layers of primer, then 2 coats of paint, in the end their fireplaces look like someone applied plastic sheeting and heated it. No definition left, no texture, just a flat awful look.
