  • Five years ago I bought a brick fireplace painting kit called Brick Anew to paint my brick fireplace in my family room. Now that 5 years have passed, I wanted to interview the owner of this brick painting kit to ask him some questions about painting fireplaces, replacing fireplace doors, and how we should approach our fireplace makeovers from a DIY standpoint. See what Sam Wilhoit, owner of Brick Anew, had to say during our conversation! :)

I am glad that you like your fireplace and it is holding up. I loved the old one. Those are used brick with a lot of character, and very difficult to lay especially so beautifully, but if you like it better, it is your house. Your ugly old brick fireplace was absolutely beautiful.

I bought my current (70's) home 8 yrs ago because of the brick fireplace and hearth! My fireplace is 7 1/2 feet wide, not nearly as large as yours, and the bricks on the floor are laid out in a half circle. I've not seen another like it. I love the rest of my home but this fireplace is just incredible to me. I'm so afraid to paint it and possibly ruin it! But, I'm tempted after watching your makeover! It turned out so beautiful!

I wish I had known about this vendor 4 years ago when my ex and I were rehabbing a house. It was one of those late 80's contemporary monstrosities with the rough-hewn cedar floating mantle. Ugh! Never could figure out how to fix that without completely removing, except to maybe build a box around it. I'll keep this company on file for future reference!

I had this problem with too much brick. Looked a lot like this one. I framed and sheetrocked only leaving a normal sized area for a fireplace. Left the rest of the brick as is and it looks great.

I'm looking at my brick fireplace, thinking OMG it's time to upgrade! It's an extension of the brick outside, and the colors make the already-small room look smaller, especially since it's an angled fireplace that goes all the way to my built-in oven! I'm going to add this to my project list since that's the focal point in my family room!

Painting a brick house is ALWAYS a BIG MISTAKE! The beauty of bare brick is the many decades of maintenance-free service. Yes, I know it's cool and trendy, but it's a huge dis-service in the long run. The current or future owners will have to scrape and repaint and as the coats of paint accumulate the shorter the life of the paint. Eventually, ALL the paint needs to be sandblasted or removed with paint stripper. And then probably the mortar joints repaired (tuck pointing). So PLEASE just spare the home and future owners of this horrible fad!
