Mid project with 7 doors to paint. Was debating if I should get a sprayer or not. Jeff always has the answer. "Do yourself a favor" and get you a sprayer
Just wanted to say how incredibly helpful this video was for me this week. I was thinking about tackling a project like this this week, and like a cross from the sky your video landed in my feed. It was a decorative brick section rather than a whole house, but the two coats took an hour each of two coats to spray (with my new Wagner sprayer) and about 2.5 hours to mask off/clean up. One day project.
Man do I wish I knew about that split roller when I was painting my stucco ceiling in my living room last month. Also I know telling Jeff I painted a stucco ceiling is sacrilegious but it had to be done haha
A little later in the season I'm going to tackle the outside of our 2700 square foot home. I have an HVLP sprayer and compressor, but am toying with the idea of getting an airless sprayer to speed up the process. Great suggestions for alternatives.
I have a brand new sprayer still in the box I bought from Lowe's 2 years ago, it was the best one they had, almost 200.00 , I need to paint the rest of my garage, I wonder if the sprayer will use more paint then to roll it on? The garage is made out of concrete blocks and already has a primer coat. Thanks
@@foxiedogitchypaws7141 In my limited experience, spraying has a little less waste than rolling. Especially on small jobs, what cannot be recovered from the roller or tray offsets any loss to overspray. I may lose an ounce or so to the innards of the sprayer I have.
How long is this rated to last on brick? Is it a penetrating or non penetrating stain? When re-coating (for those of us who will be living in the same house for many years and will have to deal with the aftermath), will the entire outside need to be sand blasted before re-applying?
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY I also live and work in Ontario... We don't have OSHA, but we do have OHSA. Better be careful the MoL doesn't catch you doing dangerous stunts like this.
I didn't know you could change the color of brick!! As a layman I always thought it was set in stone and you just had to live with it, GLAD TO KNOW THATS NOT THE CASE!!!
I was skeptical because I often hate painted brick, but tbh that looks a ton better. Also removing the giant cross hugely improves the homey atmosphere!
There are other options for the more expensive equipment that you might need during a renovation, such as the higher end paint spray equipment. When it's equipment that your likely to only need for one job or a very short time, renting is always a good option if it's available. The other option is to purchase the equipment, maintain it in excellent condition and then resell it. If you have the receipt to prove that you only purchased the equipment only 10 days ago, the buyer will have confidence that it will be "almost new condition". The $1,500.00 paint spray equipment will only cost you $500.00 for your job if you can resell it for $1,000.00

Appreciate you showing pairing alternatives. Graco makes a handheld sprayer that seems to move paint quick. Trucoat line. if you get a chance to try I think it will find a place in your arsenal.
Any idea on the lifetime of a stain like this? I've heard from other people to think twice about painting brick, as the paint will flake off and turn a maintenance-free brick into a heavy-maintenance situation. Does this soak in and last better? It sure did look nice afterwards!
This is me with my fire place ! I swear there’s at least 30 layers of paint on that thing and thi brick under is so brittle like chalk 😳 I think I effed up by taking the paint off
I have a wagner sprayer Jeff, it's a universal W510 come with 2 attachments bottles different sizes the one I got in the UK cost me 120 pounds. I love it I have sprayed the bathroom ceiling and walls, sprayed wooden garden fence panels. It's a great toy for any DIY parson 😁
Gotta love the "safety police" hit and run commenters claiming this is unsafe and dangerous, especially when they don't supply a reason why it's unsafe and don't give alternate options. I didn't see anything was overtly unsafe. Must be a bunch of scaredy cats who afraid of heights and afraid of going on a lift. Love the tutorial Jeff. Definitely learned something today.
A puny little lift like this with grass underneath in some scenarios depending how you would land maybe move up to the big boys on an actual construction site and you're just a moron for being untied. In the end why not just attach? A harness is less than a hundred dollars. This is the problem in Canada our healthcare is free to citizens through taxes paid by all. If you had a private insurer you think they would pay if they found out you were negligent?
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY problem is that the boom arm will literally catapult you out of the cage, in this case maybe not such a big deal since the base looks fairly secure but it could be an interesting video talking about. Like just extending the arm and manhandling the base with/without the supports. People have no idea how a slight disturbance too the base of a lift will translate all the way to the cage.
I know getting students in has saved money, but I would not be happy with this standard of finish. The cutting in around the edges seemed none existent, the overspray onto the fascias up top would be difficult to get back to white on top of the dark stain. Thanks for the video it was well done, but I’m a bit more fussy on detail.
Harbor freight has an airless that works pretty well for a lot less than the professional machines. If you take the time to clean it it will work great for years of occasional use. Mine is going on 10 and it still works, but I think there's a seal i should replace because it leaks a little when i am running water through it to clean it. Even that started one time after I lent it to a friend and I think he didn't clean it as well as I would. For a big project it's worth the setup/cleanup time.
Yes a boom is a lot safer then a ladder when you actually follow the safety instructions on the lift. 1 wear a harnesses and lanyard and don’t come as close to the power lines like you guys did . Hopefully you had the power shut off .
What I like is that it's gone from a how to video pro project to how to video project with a progression of a major project to show everyone the steps involved so that they don't panic and bite off more than they can chew at a time
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY so in reality that's a 2 day job for a professional paint crew. Your telling me paint companies up there charge $10,000 a day? Seems a little high? A similar job here in the states just to stain the bricks and not painting the trim, doors, soffit, & gutters would be 6-10 grand. I could see possibly 20 grand on the high side if it was a complete top to bottom exterior paint job. Also, you got what you paid for. I would have never accepted that as a finished product. The whole thing is patchy and overspray everywhere. By the time you finish what they screwed up u could have just hired a good experienced crew. Those old bricks needed at least 3 coats of stain to hide the base color and all the different start and stop lines they left. After looking at the final finish I have to agree with several other comments that it looks worse and you devalued the building. Last but not least, if I hired a crew who used zero PPE especially on the lift, I'd run them off. Chances are they are hacks. On the positive side I believe your DIY philosophy is good to the viewers if you show them the right way to do it. I wouldn't have even broke out the brush and roller. It is not practical for many homeowners who aren't used to that much manual labor. Rent an airless and spray it in a couple days. If they can't operate what is needed to do the job correctly, let the new home buyers pay for professionals. People flipping houses these days are almost as bad as used car salesmen who cover up problems and hide or make up whatever they can to make a quick buck and basically give a tailgate warranty. Quit passing the buck to the next guy. I watch tons of your videos and most are great but some tips are what we call handyman specials. Thanks for all the work u put into the videos. Look forward to see how this turns out when finished. I want to see how you make the corner you rolled and brushed blend in with the rest of the building. Right now it sticks out like a sore thumb. Cheers
Nice info. I'd probably combine the last two options on painting. Use the Wagner Power Painter and then use the brush and or roller to work in the extra paint for good even coverage.
8:30 As a Realtor, I've never had a buyer say "If only they had stained the brick, I woulda paid $15,000 more." I've also never listed a house for $15,000 above comps because mine had stained brick. That advice is somewhere between foolishness and dangerous. Getting ROI on this project is niche *at best*.
As a retired real estate appraiser, I agree. Also, there is a reason you don't see many large, monolithic houses or other buildings painted black or a very dark grey. The original brick color was much more compatible with the stone foundation. Now, the dark brick clashes with the stone foundation as well as the steeple. Yuck!!! The original design at least had some harmony going for it. In best of cases, I don't think this job is worth the cost of the paint.
I like your videos but the best way to stain that brick is to spray with an airless and have someone back roll over your wet paint with a large nap roller it covers way better than spraying alone. The roller will work the paint you sprayed into those groves.
As a someone certified to operate the boom I’m shocked you didn’t stress wearing a harness while inside . I know it seems like no big deal . But especially if you don’t operate regularly that harness can save major issues even lives . Especially as while working accidents happen even though there is the foot kill switch . Also I hate painted brick . There are other ways to make it beautiful again . The yuppies In my trendy neighborhood fall for this and pay the big money and it looks like shit 5 - 7 years later . Especially when they fall for letting them paint vinyl or aluminum siding with no prep or incorrect prep . Yes you showed how easy sprayers are but shocked you think that look increased the value . Same money could of been used focusing on decorative ways to make the beautiful red brick pop again . Many of the closed trendy restaurants from con vid now look even worse as these original poor paint job of the brick really shows now they are shut down . I’m a brick and mortar fan obviously . But different strokes for different folks
I used an airless sprayer to prime/paint my basement finish. If using one, do yourself a favor and buy the mesh in-bucket strainers. We saved ourselves unknown amounts of time by filtering out unseen globs of paint that would clog the hose and/or gun. Also, if you're new to using an airless sprayer have a roller handy just in case you apply a bit too much paint. Simply back roll the area with runs and blend it in. Best way to quickly cover large amounts of surface! Over 1000 square feet primed and painted (walls and ceiling) in 3 days over 2 weekends. [1 day prime, 1 day ceiling paint, 1 day walls]

I get it cheers!
My Favourite RUclipsr of all time
A little later in the season I'm going to tackle the outside of our 2700 square foot home. I have an HVLP sprayer and compressor, but am toying with the idea of getting an airless sprayer to speed up the process. Great suggestions for alternatives.
Cheers Joe!
I may lose an ounce or so to the innards of the sprayer I have.
great video! the genie boom suggestion solves an accessibility issue I have at the prospect of painting my house.
How long is this rated to last on brick?
Is it a penetrating or non penetrating stain?
When re-coating (for those of us who will be living in the same house for many years and will have to deal with the aftermath), will the entire outside need to be sand blasted before re-applying?
Nice and very practical question. What's the future of this finish, durable, how many years?
penetrating and at least 20 years!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME :D Now to find where I can get PPG products...
Home Depot in the USA carries Ppg paints
@@chalcedony6858 Also, Wal-Mart.
I prefer the sprayer. Just need to move slower with arm motion. Brush and roll would take forever. But lile ya said personal prefrence. Great job!
OSHA would like to know if power was removed at the pole fuse by the power co?
Also no harnesses in the lift. 🤦
they have no jurisdiction in Canada! Cheers!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY I also live and work in Ontario... We don't have OSHA, but we do have OHSA. Better be careful the MoL doesn't catch you doing dangerous stunts like this.
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY 😂😂😂
I like my home owner edition graco sprayer, best painting investment ever
I didn't know you could change the color of brick!! As a layman I always thought it was set in stone and you just had to live with it, GLAD TO KNOW THATS NOT THE CASE!!!
best return on investment out there! Cheers!
Jeff, thanks so much for putting the time into making these videos for us. If you’re ever in Des Moines, Iowa, dinner’s on me!
I was skeptical because I often hate painted brick, but tbh that looks a ton better. Also removing the giant cross hugely improves the homey atmosphere!
cheers!
Bonus content! I have a brick home looking to spruce up the exterior. Thanks for everything.
Nice job showing all 3 methods. Had the lift tipped over this video could have gone viral. Maybe next time 😂😂😂
This is great information , for when I paint outside the brick . I'm converting a garage into a tiny house .
You can do it!
Thanks for the encouragement ! I need it lol your videos help me alot .
The $1,500.00 paint spray equipment will only cost you $500.00 for your job if you can resell it for $1,000.00
Closing on my first home this week! Thanks for the all the knowledge to help me turn my new house into an amazing home for my wife and myself!
This is going to be such a fun project to follow. Thanks
Another grateful subscriber here, we plan to give our mid-century home some refreshed street appeal, & you've taken all of the head scratching out of it & we'll save a lot in the process.
Huge virtual manhug coming your way from Australia. 👍
Hi !it doesn’t look like a church anymore with that color
exactly! Cheers!
It's going to be his house. Not a church anymore.
What I like is that you've gone from just how to Videos to. How to Videos with a story line showing progression of a full project. I feel it'll help people see. How to plan their own. Projects
Appreciate you showing pairing alternatives. Graco makes a handheld sprayer that seems to move paint quick. Trucoat line. if you get a chance to try I think it will find a place in your arsenal.
First. Can't wait to see the finished product a few years from now!
right!!
OK...will be purchasing one of those to paint my brick home this spring!
Can't wait to try something similar on my fireplace!
You should! Cheers!
TY Jeff i was going to do it with a ladder , but after seen this i will go a safe way like you suggested . love your channel and tips
I would have liked you bring up that renting the high end Airless sprayer is an option that won't brake the bank and save you many hours of work.
I love it I am beginning and it’s day #2 for me , yes I see I went a little bit further . I am so happy ❤
Any idea on the lifetime of a stain like this? I've heard from other people to think twice about painting brick, as the paint will flake off and turn a maintenance-free brick into a heavy-maintenance situation. Does this soak in and last better?
It sure did look nice afterwards!
that's the difference between paint and stain the stain will not flake
4:35
@@stuartfarrell6729 Nothing lasts forever. The stain will fade at a minimum.
at least 20 years!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY awesome!
Perfect timing. I'm back and forth on an airless sprayer or a hvlp gun to paint my gazebo. Problem solved, thanks Jeff.
And here I am spending the last 2 weeks stripping paint off brick in my house.
Definitely learned something today.
as long as you stay in the cage. It is safer than the amusement park. Cheers!
@@laggmonkei Rappel from the roof. Two long ropes thrown from one side of the building to the other side anchored to your car. Finished.
I would feel much safer using that boom thing than either a ladder or scaffolding at 70. Just climb on board oh yeah. Much easier and safer.
2 house's in my neighborhood recently painted the brick it looks great! Now i feel like i could diy+!!
the music when your carrying the cross 😂😂😂😂
oh man. I got shiver up my spine seeing you spray without a mask
I know getting students in has saved money, but I would not be happy
with this standard of finish.
Hopefully you had the power shut off .
l had to look away. lt would have been nice if he'd said during the video that the power was shut off.
Wow, this is so helpful. Such an amazing good job! I am trying this!! Thank you!!!!!!!!
Can you remove this product if you change your mind later?
This man has given me the confidence to finish my basement.
I haven't started yet. But I'll, next year.
The Glorious final words of every great man right before being nagged to death by their wives haha.
A spray can of brake cleaner works very well with getting rid of wasps and hornets
Smells fresh too!
What I like is that it's gone from a how to video pro project to how to video project with a progression of a major project to show everyone the steps involved so that they don't panic and bite off more than they can chew at a time
I don't think I would call those students Pros just yet. Does that look like a pro job to u? Ya, me neither... 😆
Looks like you partially painted the soffits as well
a little overspray to quicken the workflow. I will be painting the soffits and fascia black soon. Cheers!
That's so annoying to my eyes when I watched it. Just painted my entire house and showed it to wife saying... "Hey, we did much better here". LOL
I can't wait to see the finished house. Really looking forward to this series.
Missed a couple spots there
no worries. i will punch list that easy. Cheers! better $3000.00 and a few missed spots than $20,000perfect!
Use the Wagner Power Painter and then use the brush and or roller to work in the extra paint for good even coverage.
cheers. with heavy texture brick you really need to over spray.
Its like you KNEW I was going to do this right after I did my IKEA kitchen build by watching your video. Great stuff as always
Cheers Jackie!
I like your videos but the best way to stain that brick is to spray with an airless and have someone back roll over your wet paint with a large nap roller it covers way better than spraying alone. The roller will work the paint you sprayed into those groves.
Nice work and smart safety methods you apply bud👏
Wow Batman and Robin
Jeff its very blotchy , is it still wet here n there?
yup. I will fix!
keep up the good work on the new property Jeff & Max
