  • Lawmakers approved a giant new tranche of support for Ukraine late last night after a tortured passage through the U.S. Congress, where it was nearly derailed by right-wing resistance in the House.
Marc Santora, a Times reporter in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, explains what effect the money could have, given Ukraine’s increasing desperation on the battlefield.
Guest: Marc Santora (www.nytimes.com/by/marc-santora) , who covers Ukraine for The New York Times.
    Background reading:
    • The aid package drew overwhelming bipartisan support (www.nytimes.com/2024/04/20/us...) , reflecting broad consensus.
    • The vote to resume U.S. military support was met with relief in Ukraine (www.nytimes.com/2024/04/21/wo...) .

Johnson dragging his feet for 6 months has obviously had catastrophic consequences. Of course $60 billion is not enough if it is all the US gives Ukraine in military aid and continues to delay or deny further aid. US military aid needs to be consistent and sustained, and needs to be informed by what the Ukrainians are communicating as their needs on the battlefield right now.
The US is far too slow to move, while Russia is transforming its entire economy to fight Ukraine and its allies are supplying it with drones and raw materials for weapons.

@@denniskrust2137 That's just wishful thinking, with all respect. You gravely underestimate Russian prowess. Russia has constructed the most elaborate defense lines in warfare history: Dozens of miles of anti-tank and anti-personnel mined fields, tank traps, trenches, bunkers, and tree lines. Trenches and tunnel-connected bunkers are camouflaged, surrounded by reinforced wood and insulated from the cold weather. This isn't to mention other defense mechanisms, such as tanks, snipers, lookout soldiers, trucks, and anti-tank missiles. This is why the 2023 Ukrainian counteroffensive failed spectacularly. Russia now has a booming mobilized war economy, and unlike Western opinion on war casualties, Russian opinion is generally unconcerned. For Vladimir Putin, to win is to rightfully bet that Western support for Ukraine will zero out at some point, and that it's only a matter of when, not if.

  • @alifleih
    @alifleih 25 дней назад

In short, the $60 billion is barely enough to keep Ukraine floating, and nowhere near enough to turn the tide of the war. As Santora said: "Some of it will move in quickly, but it's much harder to calculate when it'll start to have a dynamic impact on the battlefield." I think Ukraine made a massive mistake when they ignored America's request to hold and build, rather spending precious ammo, munitions, and lives on failing and largely symbolic qualitative attacks. The reality is becoming clearer than ever: Ukraine will most certainly not regain all of its lost territory. It's not mid 2022 anymore, when Ukrainians succeeded in reclaiming half of occupied land. The question now is what Ukraine must do with what they have. I believe the best way forward is to heavily entrench the defense lines, weaken Russian morale with regards to further advancements, and hopefully come to the negotiation table eventually with more leverage. However, I highly doubt Zelensky will agree to a proposal like this.

Why does this issue only come up when we're talking about the US supplying aid to Ukraine?
It's never mentioned when the deficit is ballooned after huge tax cuts for the wealthy. It's also funny how you people never place this moral burden on Russia or China or Iran, each of which are transforming their economies to place them on a war-footing with their neighbours.
Also, the money spent on military aid to Ukraine is just a tiny fraction of the US's current defense budget.
It would help you to understand how fiscal spending and budget allocations work. The US can walk and chew gum, like every other country in existence. Supplying much-needed military aid to an ally being invaded by an imperialist power does not mean other issues cannot or are never addressed.

Ok, let's look at other issues.
"It's never mentioned when the deficit is ballooned after huge tax cuts for the wealthy. "
So if the wealthy aren't paying taxes, then who IS paying taxes? Obviously the government must be getting its money from somewhere.
By the way, the wealthy have the resources and wherewithal to LEAVE the US, should taxes get too high.
"It's also funny how you people never place this moral burden on Russia or China or Iran,"
I happen to live in China. Compared to the US, China is WAY BETTER at getting shit done. Like for example, education, or taking care of the homeless. When they want a new road built, it takes them a few weeks to tear out the old road and build a new one. In the US, that can take decades because of all the regulations involved.
"The US can walk and chew gum, like every other country in existence. "
      No, they can't.
"Supplying much-needed military aid to an ally being invaded by an imperialist power does not mean other issues cannot or are never addressed."
If that's the case, then why are those other issues never addressed? Why is China better than the US at addressing those issues?

You’ve clearly never heard of opportunity cost. We lose way more money in the long run if we lose Ukraine to Russia and let Russia do whatever it wants in Europe. They will use their position to strangle us out of agriculture, trade, and energy markets. They will supplant us as the major ally of countries around the world that we rely on for trade. They will potentially force us out of desperation to instead be drawn into much more costly wars that are much more expensive and violent and could force American troops to be deployed.
Imagine how much money could have been saved, how many American lives could have been saved if we had just did everything we could have to arm and support the Poles when Germany first invaded, if we could have stopped the Germans right at the start of their expansion and made it clear that they would never just walk across Europe. Even if they eventually won they would have exhausted so many resources that their calculations would have completely prevented them from ever trying to take France, at which point millions upon millions of lives would have been saved.
$60billion is less than 1% of the U.S. federal budget. Most of the funds are just the value of weapons already sitting in a warehouse that we paid to build 40 years ago and we have to pay to upkeep until we eventually will just bury them in the dirt, literally. Now we are getting them off our shelves and sending them to do what they are designed for while also paying for American companies to create jobs to refill our stocks.
This $60bil is essentially free money. If you think this affects our ability to solve other issues then you haven’t been paying any attention. The only people getting in the way of solving those problems have been Republicans. Democrats are the ones trying to feed and house the poor, make new jobs, and the ones who have been trying fix the boarder. It’s been republicans who been blocking that legislation. If you’re upset with that stuff not getting done then vote democrat in November.
